    Book Description

The purpose of this monograph is to show that, in the radiation regime, there exists a Hamiltonian description of the dynamics of a massless scalar field, as well as of the dynamics of the gravitational field. The authors construct such a framework extending the previous work of Kijowski and Tulczyjew. They start by reviewing some elementary facts concerning Hamiltonian dynamical systems and then describe the geometric Hamiltonian framework, adequate for both the usual asymptotically flat-at-spatial-infinity regime and for the radiation regime. The text then gives a detailed description of the application of the new formalism to the case of the massless scalar field. Finally, the formalism is applied to the case of Einstein gravity. The Hamiltonian role of the Trautman--Bondi mass is exhibited. A Hamiltonian definition of angular momentum at null infinity is derived and analysed.

    Book Description

For successful African-American businesswoman Zoe Reynard, finding the pleasure she wants, the way she wants it, is not worth the risk of losing everything she has: marriage to the man she has loved since childhood, a thriving company, three wonderful children. But Zoe feels helpless in the grip of an overpowering addiction...to sex.

Finding a compassionate woman therapist to help her, Zoe finally summons the courage to tell her torrid story, a tale of guilt and desire as shocking as it is compelling. From the sensitive artist with whom she spends stolen hours on rumpled sheets to the rough and violent man who draws her toward destruction,Zoe is a woman desperately searching for fulfillment -- and something darker, deeper, and perhaps deadly. As her life spins out of control and her sexual escapades carry her toward a dangerous choice, Zoe is racing against time to uncover the source of her "fatal attraction" -- as chilling secrets tumble forth from the recesses of a woman's mind, and perilous temptations lead toward a climax that can threaten her sanity, her marriage...and her life.

    Book Description

Welcome to the delightful array of smart and sassy women who valiantly -- and hilariously -- struggle with the eternal battle of the sexes in this gutsy collection of stories.

Child brides, misguided newlyweds, and lusty middle-aged grandmothers are just a few of the characters Abigail Thomas brings to life in these wise and witty stories about women of all ages trying to deal with love for men, with their families, and with their own lot in life. Thomas presents interesting heroines: there's the girl in "Sisters" who hates her younger sibling for (among other things) her precise memory. In "Seeing Things," Maude, who "wants to be tan the whole year round," and whose "great ambition is to be whistled at on the street," is told by her younger sister, "You look ridiculous smoking with the chicken pox." And then there are the four stories about Buddy and Virginia, who have to drop out of school and get married after she gets pregnant. From sibling rivalry to marital strife, Thomas uncovers the pain, the poignancy, and the belief in love that lie in the hearts of her heroines.

1 out of 5 stars We miss Fred Carver.......2006-01-15

It's hard to believe that _The Ex_ was written by the same author who gave us the excellent Fred Carver detective series. Those books had memorable characters (who can ever forget the corrupt cop, McGregor?), compelling plots, a keen sense of place, and an anti-hero protagonist we could care about. The same can be said for his Alo Nudger series.

This book has none of that. It's like a script from a bad TV movie. The characters are cardboard cut-outs, and the plot is utterly predictable. The final scene is completely illogical. The prose style is prosaic and simplistic--very much unlike the wry, terse style in the Carver books. It wouldn't surprise me if this one was ghost-written.

Lutz has won many awards for his earlier detective novels. I suppose he's moved into mass-market commercialism so he can bank some money. Can't blame him--but too bad for his long-time fans.

3 out of 5 stars 'The Ex' is a somewhat boring erotic thriller.......1998-09-12

John Lutz didn't do a very good job on this one. The story is atypical and jumps over many holes in the plot. Lutz starts out with Deidre, a beautiful pyscho, escaping from a mental institution. She immediately heads to New York to try and rendezvous with her ex-husband David after several years. David has already re-married though and has a son. No problem for Deidre. Immediately Deidre begins to work herself back into David's life. David's wife Molly is immediately suspicious of Deidre. But David defends his ex-wife and Molly quiets her suspicions. Before long, Deidre has seduced David into having sex with her again. At the same time Deidre is stalking Molly and beginning to convince her she's going insane. Fairly soon, Deidre has schemed her way into their apartment building. A little after that she murders their babysitter and uses David to convince Molly to let Deidre babysit their son, Michael. After this the novel grows repetitive. The only breaks are the steamy sex scenes where Deidre repeatedly shows how much control she has over her ex-husband.(at one time she handcuffs him in a funeral parlor and forces him to have sex.) David meanwhile seems to give himself up to Deidre in exchange for sex while he begins to neglect his own wife. Deidre also is busy harassing Molly. Molly becomes a basket case as whenever she goes jogging Deidre dons a disguise and follows her, repeatedly threatening her. Deidre even begins to wear Molly's clothes. Soon David is sending Molly to a physciatrist while Deidre repeatedly forces him to have sex. She has begun videotaping him and her making love and using it as blackmail. Meanwhile she has been making friends with Michael. During one scene Deidre has sex with David and then leaves the apartment and attempts to kill Molly. David, ever the loving husband, tells Molly that she was simply imagining Deirdre trying to kill her. Anyways it begins to shift. Deirdre calls the apartment and leaves a message for Molly that says she's sleeping with David. Then she heads down to their apartment and erases it since there not home. While there she pleasures herself on Molly's side of the bed and leaves the mess for Molly to see. David finds it first and cleans it and then makes an excuse to leave the apartment and heads to Deirdre. Once he's up there he doesn't chew her out but merely has sex with her in a shower. After this Deirdre(who seemed to be on the verge of victory) blows it by kidnapping Michael. David fesses up to Molly about the affair. Molly and David rush to save Michael and it all ends with a climactic showdown between Deirdre and Molly. Ultimately, David kills Molly to keep having sex with Deirdre. No. Seriously if you want to know the end(like you don't already) you ought to read this book. Overall, the book was very predictable. It gets mired down in useless sub-plots. About the only good parts are the explicit sex scenes between Deirdre and David and when we get to read how Deirdre sees the whole situation. So basically if you're looking for a guilty pleasures book, read this one.

Although Pier Paolo Pasolini is internationally renowned as a filmmaker, his poetry and novels are canonical works of modern Italian writing. Petrolio, a novel unfinished at the time of his murder in 1977, is Pasolini's last major work. All of Pasolini's major themes are here--the homoeroticism of working-class males, the reemergence of ancient myth in the modern city, and the exploitation of the underclass by capitalism. Pasolini blends these disparate themes together in a dense, but satisfying tale of social corruption, political intrigue, and personal sexual salvation. Deeply intellectual and at times mystifying--often because it was partially reconstructed from notes--Pasolini's final work is a tribute to both his power and endurance as an artist.

          5 out of 5 stars The Impersonator.......2006-07-18

The Impersonator is an intriguing and tantalising book. Its author Diana Hammond is an elegant writer, whose compelling prose makes it impossible for the reader to put the book down until its suprising denouement. The subject of the book is a mysterious male chameleon whose personality is slowly revealed by Hammond in glimpses and tantalising twists. The impersonator is everything to everyone who believe they are madly in love with him. Little do they realise, his act of giving himself totally is a charade. This is a beautifully written, original and quirky book which kept me guessing until the very end.

          4 out of 5 stars Hypnotic--A Must Read!.......2006-01-10

I read this book about 13 years ago, at the tender age of 14 (gasp!), and it is still so memorable that I had to order another copy. I can't believe that no one else is raving over it; it should be made into a motion picture. Filled with sexual tension, lots of eroticism(not cheap, by the way) and mystery, it would surely be a blockbuster hit if given the opportunity on the silver screen! I highly recommend this book if you are into shocking thrillers.

4 out of 5 stars haunting tale sticky with secrets and sex.......2002-08-24

I read this book more than 10 years ago. To this day, it still resonates within me as a very effective mystery. The novel can make you feel uncomfortable and wary with very subtle touches.

I do recommend this book to those who are looking for something with a real edge.

3 out of 5 stars What Publisher's Weekly Said About "The Impersonator".......2000-01-04

Hypnotic and intriguingly corrupt ... charged with sexuality and menace...This is an utterly compelling tale of a master manipulator who insinuates himself into various characters' lives...In quick, incisive strokes, Hammond delineates her singular cast, while her plot twists send frequent pinpricks to the heart, ahd brain and the guts.

2 out of 5 stars The Cover Art is Magnificent.......2004-09-30

Dark, depressing, and dangerous...that is how I would describe the stories in this collection. Some of the stories are Gothic in nature, and leave the reader with questions about the characters that need to be answered; others seem artifical and forced. I found one of the stories endless, and literally skipped pages and found nothing new in plot-line devleopment or character development. I was rather disappointed in the collection, since the title LAW OF DESIRE: TALES OF GAY MALE LUST AND OBSESSION did not honestly portray the thrust of the stories selected. Perhaps if the title had indicated that the "tales" were dark and disturbing, I would have approached the collection differently. Overall, I can only rate the book a "2". It is an adequate read, but generally unfulfilling.

5 out of 5 stars One of the few books around which was impossible to put down.......2000-09-27

Be warned, this book is one that should deffinatly not be judged by a short paragraph on the plot. Like many astounding books, when you try and tell somebody about the story line it comes off sounding tacky or dodgy. However, do not be fooled. This book is more that sex, and suicide. When reading it you find yourself relating almost to the characters which is often a lacking quality in books. Also the plot itself and the wild twists are very unpredictable which makes it an exciting and incredible read. I'm not going to tell you about the plot because that would ruin it for you, but my advice to you is do read it. It is worth it. To those of you who have read it and enjoyed it, may i suggest you also read "Plan B, by Jonathon Tropper" and "Secret History, by Donna Tartt"

And ignore the age, i am in fact 15 but am not registered as a member of Amazon and therefore couldn't write a review.

As the publisher of the audio book version (no longer available) of this book, I am very familiar with it and it's wonderfully, exciting and thrilling story. Once you pick it up you won't be able to put it down. It's got sex, plot, characterization, sex, and a fantastic ending...I always thought it would make a terrific movie.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best I've ever read!.......1998-03-13

This book has it all. Suspense, action, sex, and love. As a big fan of Clancy, I usually read political thrillers, but this book make me a huge fan of psychological thrillers also. The main character Phillie is a joy to read about. I recommend this book to all mature audiences.

5 out of 5 stars A Different Perspective to Victims of Sexual Abuse.......2005-12-03

Too often we are confronted with sex, violence, pain and fear from our television, newspapers, and movies, in realistic but fictional stories. We enjoy or shun these revelations based upon our own experiences and beliefs, but they serve only one purpose--to entertain.

Not so with the book, The Thorn of Sexual Abuse!

Sex is a very central part of every culture...it can be beautiful; it can be abused...but it will never, not be a part of the family environment. For many many individuals, their feelings regarding sex have arisen from very early experiences, many of them abusive or inappropriate for the young. Sexual abuse...sexual addiction is a common occurrence...so why is it not discussed?

Why? Because, it is oftentimes the family members or close neighbors who are the ones abusing our young. If we were willing to share, all of us would have at least one experience remembered from our youth...no matter how minor. Reading how a man and a woman, both abused, can meet and find a friendship and forgiveness can be a means through which we can find our own forgiveness.

Beth Sterling shares of a neighbor's touching when she was young, too young to understand, yet old enough to know what he did was wrong. Enter Paul, a man Beth had met in Church, who is discovered to be a sex offender...of young children. And she has children.

Many young children are never able to forget the early offenses made on their bodies; many others follow in the same paths and become offenders. This book tells a story of those involved in sexual offenses...all of us must understand and know how this happens and what to do about it. The Thorn of Sexual Abuse provides an excellent way to learn about this crime that will, unfortunately, never end and, also unfortunately has become more prevalent through the Internet.. The book takes us into our early homes...our present homes. This book reveals what we've held in our hearts for many years, perhaps, and this book helps us through the healing process.

This book is the best I have read regarding the victims of sexual abuse. Thank God there are those who are willing to open their secret lives to help others.
