The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Space Shuttle Orbiter landings indicate both long term directional instability and the potential for pilot induced oscillations during landing and rollout before nosewheel touchdown. The Orbiter's Flight Control System requires improvements to increase directional control in the two points stance (after main gear touchdown with the nose in the air). A number of modifications are proposed to improve directional control. This thesis describes the control deficiency, potential improvements to the Flight Control System (FCS), and evaluates a number of these improvements. The evaluation was performed by modeling the Orbiter's postlanding lateral/directional control laws using a commercially available engineering software package known as MATLAB 5.0. Directional control of the Orbiter was evaluated with and without the proposed modification to obtain a comparison of control response. Initial evaluation of future Orbiter FCS modifications could be performed using commercially available engineering software packages such as MATLAB; rather than costly full-up Orbiter simulators. A low cost initial evaluation of changes may save NASA resources.

Very Low Frequency (VLF) radio phenomena (on the ground or in space) has been an interesting field of research. This area has rapidly gained immense importance in the diagnostic study of navigation, frequency, time standards and observations of naturally occurring VLF waves as a remote sensing technique for the earth's upper atmosphere. The VLF technique also has the ability to measure very low electron density, which cannot be sensed by satellite. The present monograph, which is one step towards achieving above mentioned goals, cover the most important topic of the generation and propagation of the VLF waves along with some important result through VLF radio experiments like Trimpi effect and absorption of VLF radio waves under the polar ca of earth's upper atmosphere. Description:
Six very low frequency electromagnetic (VLF-EM) lines were surveyed across the expected strike of a lead sulphide lode in a mine in the Abakaliki lead/zinc field of Nigeria. The aim of the survey was to investigate the lateral extension of the lode and establish the potential of this tool for mapping sulphide deposits in an area underlain principally by shales. VLF-EM field values were filtered using Fraser filter and the results plotted directly over the survey lines. The plots were examined for significant anomalies that could be related to the lode. About 40m length of the lode was successfully mapped by this simple, inexpensive tool. The anomalies strike NW-SE following the strike of one of the predominant set of faults. A depth of 10m and a dip of 90^o were calculated for the conductor.

This book is easy to read, covers all the basics and some areas beyond. The author explains how best to start out and why and continues on to cover the techniques important for the beginner. All in all a very good book for anyone considering taking up single sculling as a sport.

I have read & sold other books, but not this one, because it bears reading several times, like having a coach. It reads well in a font size that I (at age 47) found easy to read. Boyne does a good job addressing equipment, rigging, rowing technique, boathandling skills, training and troubleshooting tips.

I refer to this book between sessions on the water. The book does not substitute for time in the sliding seat--in the beginning, I committed errors that threw me into the water or that made release & catch of the oar blades messy. The book, and time spent with an accomplished fellow rower, helped clean up these errors.

If you're only buying one book I'd recommend "The Sculler at Ease" by Frank Cunningham. Cunningham's book is more dated (with regard to equipment) and quirkier, but will teach you more about the sculling stroke.

I recently took up sculling and very much enjoyed this book. Honestly, I don't know if the book would be that beneficial to someone with years of experience, but from my point of view it was a great primer for training, and working on technique, etc.

An excellent resource for understanding the ins and outs of two strokes. I have heard many great things about this book and they are all true. Bell tends to focus on road racing engines, and karts, but in most examples he also metions motocross and such.

This book is extremely comprehensive and covers stuff I hadn't even thought I needed to check. It is easy enough for anyone with basic mechanical skills to follow while getting as technical as the most hardcore tuner could want. Excellent book!

I just finished it. Great detail but not too much. Most difficult math is a bit of geometry. I especially liked how he gives you eyeball starting points for various things based on years of dyno testing different bikes. I would love an updated version with discussion of newer technology like detonation counters, etc. I plan to get his other tuning books.

If you are planning on doing any modification to your 2 stroke, this book is a must have. A comprehensive and insightful look into the sometimes confusing world of tuning 2 strokes. This book will clarify 90% of your unanswered questions. Everything covered can be applied to any 2 stroke, as each topic is taken in pricipal, not specifics for each engine necessarily. I have found that i can even apply these things to my 1967 SAAB 2 stroke. It is easy to understand and follow even to a 15 year old novice like me! I couldn't live without this book. . one of my bibles!

Removes the Mystery from the 2-Stroke GP Engine.......2003-06-12

An excellent academic book on the theory behind performance tuning for 2-stroke motorcycles. Geared specifically for GP and Kart racers, this hardcover treasure has turned out to be a great reference source for questions on the logic and concepts that pertain to tuning a 2-stroke for maximum performance.

This doesn't always mean maximum horsepower. As is stated by the author, every great 2-Stroke racing machine is a compromise of power -vs- function. This concept alone makes the book well worth the purchase price.
