An insider's guide to understanding and eliminating accounting fraud
How do these high-profile accounting scandals occur and what could have been done to prevent them. Hidden Financial Risk fills that void by examining methods for off balance sheet accounting, with a particular emphasis on special purpose entities (SPE), the accounting ruse of choice at Enron and other beleaguered companies. J. Edward Ketz identifies the incentives for managers to deceive investors and creditors about financial risk and also shows investors how to protect their investments in a world filled with accounting and auditing frauds.
J. Edward Ketz, PhD (State College, PA) is MBA Faculty Director and Associate Professor of Accounting at Penn State's Smeal College of Business. He has been cited in the press nearly 300 times since Enron's bankruptcy, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.. He has a regular column in Accounting Today.

Competent analysis of off balance sheet accounting.......2005-10-26
An expert describes some the main devices used to distort financial information for public consumption, focusing on those which hide debt. I found it both informative and highly readable. Some background in business accounting is helpful but not necessary for the reader.
Accounting for the Investor.......2003-08-03
While experts wring hands and say "mistakes were made," this book gives average investors the "how to" in order to make sense of annual reports and balance sheets. It seems to blow the lid off of the various methods that managers used to hide bad debt and shaking investments. Undoubtly, good for most investors who want to avoid a repeat of Enron. It also offers a pretty explanation of why major accounting and auditing firms can't be trusted. At last, a book that allows investors to keep their investments and earn money--instead of CEOs and corporate executives. Favorite Chapter: How to Hide Debt with Pension Accounting.

Hidden Financial Risk: Understanding Off Balance Sheet Accounting
ASIN: 0899306136 |
Book Description
The objective of Off-Balance Sheet Activities is to gain insights into, and propose meaningful solutions to, those issues raised by the current proliferation of off-balance sheet transactions. The book has its origins in a New York University conference that focused on this topic. Jointly undertaken by the Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting Research and New York University's Salomon Center for the study of Financial Institutions at the Stern School of Business, the conference brought together academic researchers and practitioners in the field of accounting and finance to address the issues with the broad-mindedness requisite of a group whose approaches to solutions are as different from each other as their respectively theoretical and applied approaches to the disciplines of finance and accounting. The essays are divided into two sections. The first covers issues surrounding OBS activities and banking and begins with a brief introduction that places the essays into context. OBS activities and the underinvestment problem, whether loan sales are really OBS, and money demand and OBS liquidity are examined in detail. Section two, which also begins with a brief introduction, focuses on issues of securitized assets and financing. A report on recognition and measurement issues in accounting for securitized assets is followed by three separate discussion essays. Other subjects covered include contract theoretic analysis of OBS financing, the use of OBS financing to circumvent financial covenant restrictions, and debt contracting and financial contracting. The latter two contributions are also followed by discussion essays. This unique collection of papers will prove to be an interesting and valuable tool for accounting and finance professionals as well as for academics involved in these fields. It will also be an important addition to public, college, and university libraries.

A little bit crazy.......2007-03-26
While this book has many valid points, it's a little bit crazy, as well. Here's a direct quote from the book. In attempting to explain ballet's culture of the ultra-thin androgenous ballerina, Ms. Gordon proposes:
"It is an uncontested fact that most choreographers and company directors are men, and that the bulk of them are gay. Even if they claim to "love women," homosexuals often have very ambivalent feelings about them. And a dislike of the normal female form might easily lead to the desire to distort it, ostensibly in pursuit of aesthetic goals."
This whole book is early 1980's feminism at its saddest.
This book tells the truth about racism in ballet.......2003-03-27
This is a very honest look at what very few people know about the world of ballet. The physical and mental horrors that come with job are an additional slap in the face for anyone who hopes to become a ballet dancer...especially for the non-white ballet dancer. Its the only ballet book that has admitted the deep racism is exists in ballet. I use to love ballet but I had so many racist white teachers that didnt care for nonwhite dance students, that they helped to dash my hopes (and many many others like me). It can really break a young girls heart and its something that one never forgets. I hope that this will change one day.
Dance is a wonderful thing!.......2001-11-15
Let's stop moaning and groaning about terrible teachers, terrible schools and eating disorders in ballet dancers and DO something about it! This is a great book for parents and students to become critical consumers of ballet instruction and demand different approaches to training. The key to change is communication and education! When the students will know more than their teachers and demand sound advice for their bodies and health, the dance world will change! It is today's young dancer who will be a teacher, dancer or company director in the future.
It is up to us to take responsibility for change and not perpetuate the old paradigms.
Dance is a wonderful thing!

BALLET STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS MUST READ THIS BOOK!.......2001-07-21
Everything is NOT beautiful at the ballet.... This is a no-holds barred look at the dark side of ballet. If you thought "Little Girls in Pretty Boxes" was horrifying, this book is twice as shocking. Parents need to read this book in order to see what kind of life is in store for their child pursuing a career in dance. Ballet's stringent requirements for female dancers demand a breastless, hipless, ultra-thin body, which causes most dancers to become bulimic or anorexic. Gordon devotes an entire chapter to eating disorders rampant at ballet schools and in companies; it is shocking to note that many schools have weekly "weigh-in's", which only adds to the dancers' anguish if their weight goes up. Coupled with the physical demands of ballet, undernourished dancers are highly prone to injury and illness. Former dancers that Gordon interviewed are so crippled from injuries they can barely walk. The sacrifices to become a professional ballet dancer are enormous for both dancer and parents. Apart from principals, professional dancers make very little money, with no benefits or security after they've retired. The lifespan of a dancer is brief; many are already washed up and finished by their late twenties. Gordon admires the tenacity and dedication of the ballet dancers, but deplores their working conditions and the appalling demands ballet requires on their bodies. Gordon talks about the invisible partner, that of the ballet mother and how these women give up a normal life to give total support to the dancing child. She writes about the bitter rivalries between ballet mothers, which only increases their isolation and loneliness; it's not surprising these women become totally absorbed and obssessed with their children's success in dancing. With only a limited number of slots available in ballet companies, there is fierce competitiveness amongst students at the ballet academies, which is encouraged by the teachers. Movies like "Center Stage" and "The Turning Point" only scratch the surface of what life is really like as a ballet student or professional dancer; this books paints a more realistic portrait. Gordon interviewed hundreds of dancers for this book; however, the ballet world is such a closed world, most did not allow her to use their actual names, for fear that their comments would jeopardize their careers in dance. It is astonishing to discover how much power these ballet schools, teachers and choreographers have over their students; life in the studio causes dancers to have tunnel vision and renders them totally unprepared to cope in the real world once their all-too-short careers have ended. Although this book is out of print, do what you can to get a copy through amazon.com's services. You'll think twice before encouraging your child to become a dancer.
Book Description
Flannery O'Connor's deep Catholic faith permeated her writing, sometimes in unexpected ways. Indeed, her very imaginative and sometimes grotesque characters were often searching for redemption, many seeking God's grace through unusual, even bizarre means. Flannery O'Connor used many tools in crafting her work, especially the use of irony and the darker dimensions of humor. She strongly opposed the increased secularism of the modern world, and what she saw as its pervasive nihilism.
George Kilcourse, Jr., uses Flannery O'Connor's correspondence with her friends and associates to help define her approach to writing, and to give insight into her literary characters. Her roots in the deep South color much of her work.
This book provides important insights into the life, work, and faith of Flannery O'Connor. It will be ideal for use in college theology or literature classes, although the general reader will also benefit from it. Indeed, anyone wishing to explore the religious dynamic in O'Connor's writing will appreciate this fascinating book.
Book Description
To all appearances, Isobel and Giles Grant have it all: happily married, with two adored children, and a glorious house in Scotland, they are about to fulfil a lifetime's dream by launching the Glendrochatt Arts Centre. The perfect life, it would seem. But beneath the surface, there are cracks which threaten to destabilize everything they've worked for. While their daughter Amy is bright and talented, her twin Edward is "different" -- nobody knows quite what Edward is. And Giles's talent for manipulation occasionally threatens to provoke even sunny Isobel.
When Isobel's elder sister, Lorna, returns from South Africa -- and an unhappy marriage -- to take up residence at Glendrochatt, the cracks widen. For Lorna was once Giles's lover, and she's determined to take him back. The scars of a difficult childhood run deep in Lorna, and watching Isobel live the life she had planned for herself is almost unbearable. The situation is further complicated by the arrival of Daniel, an undeniably talented but mysterious artist to whom both sisters are drawn. It seems as if the Grants might be thrown irrevocably off balance.

Off Balance.......2006-01-17
Typical story man loves woman in comes in another woman to steal the man but with so many other dynamics that make the book truely enjoyable.
Thoughtful and sensitive.......2003-04-09
I absolutely love this book. It is beautifully, even elegantly, written (except for a few phonetic errors such as "poured" instead of "pored"). The scene is vividly and appealingly set, and the characters finely drawn. Quite simply, I want to live in the world of Isobel and Giles and those around them. I want Isobel's spirit, her equanamity, her capacity for loving, her energy, her dog, and her household help. This is very much a testament to Ms Sheepshanks' evocative writing skills. I did not want the book to end.
What truly sets this book apart, however, are the twins, Edward and Amy. It is rare to find such wonderfully handled ten-year-olds. Amy is brilliant, loyal, challenging, and musical, and clearly feels all the pressure to succeed that the gifted sibling of a disabled person is bound to experience. The portrayal of Edward is perhaps the most sensitive and understanding portrait of a handicapped child I have ever encountered. There is no attempt to sentimentalize him nor to get inside his mind, something no one would be capable of doing. But he is so beautifully depicted that he becomes real in a way rare in any writing.
I am desperate for another novel by Mary Sheepshanks. I love all four of her books, and I REALLY want to find out what happens when Lorna drops her bombshell on Giles and Isobel. I do not hope for a sequel (although I would love one): another skill mastered by Ms Sheepshanks is her ability to tell her readers what has become of the characters in her earlier books even while she is writing about different people. For example, one learns about Flavia, the heroine of Facing the Music, in Off Balance, in which she is a relatively minor character.
Please, Ms Sheepshanks, keep writing your fabulous novels!
Crazy, not merely Off Balance.......2003-03-11
I enjoyed the characters, the descriptions of Scotland and the upper crust country life, and the dialogue. The premise disturbed me, thus the lower rating. It is apparent from the moment Lorna enters the picture that she is determined to wedge herself in between her sister, Isobel, and her sister's husband, Giles. "Why let her stay?" is my question. If someone is endangering your marriage and upsetting your children, why allow them to remain among you?
Love it Love it Love it.......2003-01-22
"Off Balance" did take a few pages for me to get into it. But after that I loved it I still love it. Mary Sheepshanks did a wonerful job with this book. I had so many feelings for the wonderful characters that I really thought they were real people. I felt like it was happening in my life. The end made me so happy with relief. The epilogue stunned me! I almost fell out of my chair. I cant wait for the next. Please let there be a next.
Of Balance Off my reading list.......2002-02-20
I did not like this book because the words are very hard to understand and the plot was not at all making sense to me. It was confusing and the names had too much thinking involved for reading a book. Also to find out the true meaning of the plot you must read the pages over and over, and at that rate I could be done with 2 other books.
This book seems to be interesting but actually understand this book you have to have patience I found out that the meaning of "Do Not Judge a book by it's cover" really meant.
I do like one part in the book though. The part that I enjoyed was when one of the aunts came home and explained how she was sorry for being late. I liked this part because it was very simple and understandable. The rest of the story was just a blur.

Book Description
Freedom of expression on disturbing matters of society, history, and governance is becoming ever more contested in Canada. The idea that official meanings and histories can legally substitute for publicly constructed ones - for fear of what an uncensored public might themselves construct - is gaining widespread acceptance. Public invocation of hate propaganda law, its language, and its moral authority in otherwise ordinary discursive contexts, has been crucial to, and symbolic of, this trend.
Democracy Off Balance offers an unsettling analysis of hate censorship and hate censors as a complex paradox of modern democratic discourse. Stefan Braun argues against the supposed public interest served by the hate speech laws and dissects the paradoxical forces - the politically self-contradictory thinking and the socially self-defeating assumptions - that drive hate censorship in Canada today.
Braun draws on censors' own terms of social and political reference to show how they undermine their own causes with hate censorship and uncovers how hate speech law subtly impacts far beyond its strict legal confines to condition and corrode public discourse. He brings together the debate and the debaters in a multidimensional approach that challenges traditional ways of seeing the legal boundaries of freedom of expression. Democracy Off Balance is a timely and absorbing exploration of a highly controversial topic.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT!.......2005-02-04
It would be difficult to do this book justice in a review. It is by far the most cogent and coherent case for the perils of censorship and the recent consequences most people in Canada seem to have missed. Cotler, Matsuda, Mackinnon, Delgado and the all-too-many censors in this society (who nonetheless assure us that they care for free speech) would do well to read this book. Not only do these censors push for measures that have been used to undermine their very goals (eg Little Sister's case), which ought to make them just as responsible, but they cannot, without being dimwitted or deceitful, continue to push for 'hate' censorship without a serious response to the difficulties posed in this book. There are too many examples of censorship (esp. censorship gone awry) in Canada that go well beyond what the self-proclaimed guardians want, yet that never seems to give anyone pause.
The book is tightly argued and quite dense, in that every page directly contributes to the overall argument.
I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone interested in censorship in Canada (which could learn a thing or two from the US supreme court despite the inane appeal to 'cultural differences' to avoid that). Braun should be commended for his powerful case, as Canada has a severe shortage of the likes of Black, Douglas and Brennan.

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A523083. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Low availability, high cost, and poor performance of radiation hardened (rad-hard) equipment has driven the market to rely on commercial-off- the-shelf (COTS) equipment for the computing needs of today's spacecraft. This thesis describes the tailoring of a COTS embedded real-time operating system and design of a human-computer interface (HCI) for a triple modular redundant (TMR) fault-tolerant microprocessor for use in space-based applications. Once disadvantage of using COTS hardware components is their susceptibility to the radiation effects present in the space environment. and specifically, radiation- induced single-event upsets (SEUs). In the event of an SEU, a fault-tolerant system can mitigate the effects of the upset and continue to process from the last known correct system state. The TMR basic hardware design used for this research is an acceptable fault-tolerant design candidate for the main processor for space-based applications. We found that a COTS embedded real-time operating system could be tailored to support the TMR hardware. The HCI accepts serial data from the TMR, correctly identifies the source of the error, allows for processor mode selection and provides system- and board-level reset capabilities. The tailored operating system combined with the HCI is a viable software imp- lementation to support hardware-based fault-tolerant computing in a space environment.
