Book Description

Essentials of Electromagnetics for Engineering introduces the key physical and engineering principles of electromagnetics. Throughout the book, David de Wolf describes the intermediate steps in mathematical derivations that many other textbooks leave out. He covers in depth the concepts of fields and potentials and then progresses to magnetostatics, Maxwell's equations, electrodynamics and wave propagation, waveguides, transmission lines, and antennas. At each stage, de Wolf stresses the physical principles underlying the mathematical results. He also includes homework exercises, a separate chapter on numerical methods in electromagnetics, and a broad range of worked examples to illustrate important concepts. Solutions manual available.

4 out of 5 stars Honest work but ...........2007-02-21

I do not think this book is substantially different or better than what's already out there at an intermediate level for engineers. (e.g Lorrain's Electromagnetic Fields or Rao's Elements of Engineering EM or Johnks book). It does discuss optical dielectric filters and the matrix method for analyzing thin films in more detail than other E&M books (but no better than any standard optics text). It is also reasonably complete in its topics. I would recommend Inan's book except that his Engineering level book does not cover oblique incidence of waves (only normal) or dielectric waveguides. He placed that in a 2nd electromagnetic waves book.
If you do not mind buying and paying for two books, I also feel Inan's books are really well done.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2002-12-19

I have compared quite a few books on electromagnetics, and this one is the most detailed and most honest presentation of electromagnetics at the introductory level I have found. This books definitely tops others in terms of content and clarity. I compared it to Field and Wave Electromagnetics by Cheng, Fundamentals of Engineering Electromagnetics by Cheng, Elements of Electromagnetics by Sadiku, Engineering Electromagnetics by Inan, and Engineering Electromagnetics by Hayt. I should note however that Engineering Electromagnetics by Inan is a very good first read for electromagnetics students.

Book Description

Market: Students in undergraduate courses in electromagnetism. This innovative textbook provides students with a modern view of the unity of electromagnetism by forsaking the traditional historically ordered development for a more logically ordered one. This approach involves the introduction of Maxwell's equations at the earliest opportunity to serve as the basis for everything that follows.

Book Description

Since its first edition in 1979, Essential Physics for Radiographers has earned an international reputation as a clear and straightforward introduction to the physics of radiography. Now in its third edition, this book remains a core textbook for student radiographers. This new edition reflects the change from diploma to graduated radiography education, however the authors have retained the pragmatice approach of earlier editions and continue to target the book particularly at those students who find physics a difficult subject to grasp. The book has undergone major revision, and the content has been broadened to reflect the recent advances in imaging technology. Key new topics include magnetic resonance, lasers and alternating current theory. Fundamental physical concepts such as internall energy and post-Bohr atomic theory are more fully discussed in order to stimulate students to find out more. Terminology has been revised to bring it in line with current educational and scientific practice, and decimal numbering of sections has been introduced. Information sources have been referenced, and an extensive bibliography is provided. New diagrams are included, others have been redrawn with greater accuracy and tables of physical data have been included. Worked examples and calculations feature strongly, and the innovative context-sensitive Maths Help File guides readers gently through the mathematical steps and concepts involved.

Eventhough it is not the first Medical Physics book in this type, this book occupying large extent of interconnected physics topics which are very much related to Medical Imaging and other Related Technologies. So by expectation this book will help all who are in this field and who are interested to start from the basics.

        Book Description

Provides a modern introduction to semiconductor physics, presenting the basic information necessary to understand semiconductors, along with some of the latest theories and developments. Based on the author's undergraduate course, this book bridges the gap between basic subjects such as quantum mechanics and Maxwell's equations and the fundamental processes determining the behaviour of semiconductors. Following a quantum mechanics approach this text is predominantly aimed at scientists rather then engineers, and forms the basis for the understanding of modern mesoscopic physics in semiconductors and quantum devices like resonant tunneling diodes.

Rather than attempting to comprehensively cover all aspects of semiconductor physics, this text aims to cover the most important and interesting aspects of this subject to scientists. Starting with the development of semiconductor physics from basic quantum mechanics, the text moves on to cover band structure and effective mass theory, before covering electron-phonon coupling and charge transport. It concludes with a chapter on optical transitions. Students will need some knowledge of quantum mechanics and solid state although this is covered to some extent in the book.

        4 out of 5 stars Excellent Supplement.......2004-08-10

Excellent supplement to the traditional solid state text. This book is probably not the most formal. But it presented the information in such a way that I understood where the ideas came from. I've read other texts and they often pull equations out of nowhere or I could not see the smooth transition from topic to topic that I see with this book. If you are confused about solid state, get this. And actually, it introduces some advanced topics that are necessary to know if you are doing research in this area. Get this if you are a grad or undergrad and have no idea what is going on with your research project.

          Book Description

Electromagnetics is one of the fundamental disciplines of electronic engineering. The author explains the development of field theory in relation to common electrical circuits and components, as opposed to just circuit theory, thus giving the reader a broader perspective of electrical circuits.

Essentially in two parts, this book will help students to gain an appreciation of the physical effects of electrical and magnetic fields. The first part covers the basic theory of electrostatics, electromagnetism and electroconductive fields and applies the theory to different transmission lines. It culminates in a comparison of the basic relationships that lie behind all the field systems covered. The second part covers the physical effects of dielectrics and ferrous materials on capacitors and coils. It is truly introductory with very little prior knowledge assumed. The mathematical techniques required to manipulate the theory are introduced from basics and there are numerous worked examples and problems. Self-assessment questions are given at the end of each chapter to allow the student to check their understanding of material before moving onto further chapters. This is an accessible and self-contained introduction to a topic that all physical scientists and engineers must get to grips with before developing their knowledge further.

4 out of 5 stars A great screenplay about westernized South Asians.......2000-08-26

This screenplay is an amazing example of the culture clash that exists between South Asians and their native cultures and modern western living. Ayub Khan-Din writes a perhaps mediocre script; however he definately encompasses the generational gap that exists between a conservative father and his new age childern that were bred by the standards and values of the west. Miniskirts, clubs, and etc. are part of the lives of these westernized kids; however, they must deal with their dual identity and everything that comes with it: arranged marriages, abstinence, and a traditional outlook. All in all this is a screenplay that comes with great recommendation because as a South Asian having to deal with western society I can commiserate with the plight of these kids. Plus this is a great British Comedy/Tragedy that is hilarious and even has a few inside jokes for us South Asians.

3 out of 5 stars practically the screenplay.......2001-05-29

This book is practically the screenplay. You could take it, sit down in front of the TV with the film on and read out what the actors are saying word-for-word. Although it follows it, it is actually quiet a good book. It would keep you occupied and you wouldn't get bored. Take my advice- read before you see the film because other-wise, you won't want to see the filk.

          5 out of 5 stars Comic..........2000-07-20

Anyone who wants a good laugh can pick up this book. I have never watched the movie but I find that this book is just as great! A heartwarming story about a girl (Josie) seeking for the true love of her life. She was sent back to high school on an assignment for the newspapers. Back in school, she tried very hard to be cool and also joined the cool crowd. But the result was that she simply did not fit in the 'in' crowd. She was too much of a natural geek. So she befriended a girl in her class who was also sort of a geek. Soon, she was hanging out with a bunch of geeks.

This is a very funny book, gotta try... =)

5 out of 5 stars A great movie and book.......2000-02-22

I found that the book was a lot like the movie. My favorite part would have to be the end when Josie is standing on the baseball mound waiting for Sam. I likes how the writers give you that feeling in your stomch that you have lost you best friend and then all of a sudden once you have accepted the fact her come the guy you have been waiting for all of our life. The beging of the book should have told more about what was going on than it did. i was hard to follow if you haven't seen the movie but over all I loved it.

3 out of 5 stars Great story, bad writing.......2000-01-15

I bought this book because I absolutely loved the movie and wanted to re-live it before it was out on video. Well, I still think it's the best story ever--very uplifting and optimistic--but this book is poorly written. I suppose I didn't expect it to be particularly good writing, but it really did take away from the wonderful message of the book. I would not recommend buying this book unless you see the movie first.

5 out of 5 stars you dont have to be cool to be loved.......1999-10-07

A brilliant heart warming story that I couldnt put down and I'm sure I will read it again and again! So follow your dreams and do what you want to do and dont let anyone tell you other wise. If Josie can do it so CAN you !!!!

            Book Description

A fascinating, factoid-full, annotated guide to the first-ever Writers Guild's list of best-written screenplays, from Oscar® winners to Hollywood classics to influential indies, from the 1930s through the present—a must for all who are interested in film and writing.

The results are in. In a joint venture between the WGA, West, and WGA, East, ballots were sent, for the first time ever, to their professional membership in order to compile the finest accomplishments in screenwriting. Up to ten screenplays could be cited. Any produced film, past or present, English-language or otherwise, was eligible. The final list was announced in April 2006 and is like a travelogue of the greatest films of all time, with all decades represented from the 1930s onward.

The Writers Guild's list features playwrights, novelists, film critics, writer-directors, writer-actors, three blacklisted writers, and four sets of brothers. Among those named are Woody Allen, William Goldman, Billy Wilder, Nora Ephron, Mel Brooks, Charlie Kaufman, Ernest Lehman, Steve Zaillian, Budd Schulberg, and Frances Goodrich.

With features about the writing of the films, bios, review extracts, and stills, 101 Greatest Screenplays not only celebrates the greatest achievements in screenwriting, but brings well-deserved recognition to the men and women who wrote the greatest films of all time. 50 b/w photos.

Some "factoids" about the 101 greatest screenplays featured in the book:
            • Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola, and Billy Wilder tie for most films on the list—4 each; William Goldman, John Huston, and Charlie Kaufman have 3 each
            • 29 writers directed their own scripts
            • 34 of the screenplays are based on novels
            • 5 writers are well-known novelists: Peter Benchley, James M. Cain, Raymond Chandler, Graham Greene, and Mario Puzo
            • 6 are foreign films; 6 are westerns; 14 are showbiz-related; 17 deal with political/social issues of the time; 18 are about crime
            • 6 films are notable for their unusual story structure (Citizen Kane, Annie Hall, Groundhog Day, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich, Memento)
