Good book on advanced modeling subjects.......2005-07-04

This is one of the better books on the use of first-principles calculations to examine solid-state properties. The emphasis of this book is the analysis of non-periodic systems such as free surfaces, clusters, and both ordered and disordered alloys. The book is worth reading for several reasons.

1. There is good coverage of the various ab initio techniques used in electronic structure calculations: tight-binding, plane-wave psuedopotentials, LMTO, LAPW, KKR, Green's Functions, and Car - Parinello molecular dynamics. This coverage includes a thorough listing of important equations without too much math, and comparisons between different methods. The book does assume a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics, specifically operator algebra, so reader beware.

2. There are thorough definitions of the various properties that can be obtained by ab intio calculations. These include good descriptions of the density of states, cohesive energy, and configurational entropy.

3. The book is written more like a textbook than a publication of results. Each chapter focuses on a fairly narrow subject, but includes a thorough overview of the science involved, before getting into the simulation results.

4. The references given at the end of each chapter are very comprehensive, and often include other books written on materials simulations, electronic structure.

The only drawback I could find was in the chapter on recursion methods. This method is not used as often in quantum calculations, and was extremely difficult to understand.

Overall, this was a good book to read, though it is fairly expensive for 370 pages.

The phenomenon of superplasticity allows economical forming of complex components while retaining the high strength- and stiffness-to-weight ratios characteristic of aluminum alloys used in automotive, aerospace and military applications. RSLES was designed to aid DoD decision-makers in determining the optimum number of recruiting stations, their geographic location and staff size. The optimization procedure attempts to maximize contract production subject to service budget constraints. This system integrates an Access database, a GAMS optimizer and Mapinfo graphics to provide a flexible environment to maximize production through market analysis and demographic information. This research applies RSLES to 39 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) under three different stationing scenarios and analyzes the output to determine the effectiveness of the model. The recommended station location actions of the RSLES model are compared to actual stationing decisions made by the Navy and Army in fiscal years 1999 and 2000. The comparisons show that applying the RSLES model could increase Army and Navy contract production by 3, 938 high-quality accessions for all 256 MSA's in the U.S.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A circulation control (CC) elliptic airfoil section with a thickness- to-chord ratio of 0.17 and 1- percent circular arc camber, was experimentally evaluated to determine its low speed aerodynamic characteristics. The model profile is that of a previously tested single upper surface trailing edge slot airfoil, modified to incorporate an additional blowing slot on the lower surface. The main objective of this initial test was to determine if the control range, that is the range of lift coefficient available at a given angle-of- attack and momentum coefficient, could be increased without compromising the performance previously obtained with the single slot version. Test results show that the control range is more than doubled and there is no impact on upper surface only blowing performance. The range of lift coefficient produced at alpha equals zero degrees, using a combination of upper and lower slot only blowing is C1 from +3.6 to -4.0. Blowing efficiency when using the lower slot was found to be higher than that obtained when using the upper slot. This finding was somewhat unexpected, since lower surface blowing is equivalent to using CC on a negatively cambered airfoil. Data was acquired using either only the upper or lower surface slot or with dual blowing, that is simultaneous upper and lower slot blowing.

Many health problems such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and some forms of cancer have been directly related to sedentary lifestyles. Mental health has also been positively correlated with exercise. However, women are more likely than men to be sedentary, and older women are among the least active group. Therefore, research that examines the variables involved in why people choose to exercise are important since it may help the medical community learn the best ways to motivate people to adopt a habit of exercising. There are many components of behavior that have an impact on why people decide to behave in a certain way. By breaking down these components and examining them independently, specific aspects of behavior may stand out as more important in influencing action with regard to exercise. Icek Ajzen's theory of planned behavior and Albert Bandura's self-efficacy theory are two of the leading theories that affempt to explain behavior. This study comp&ed two groups: one group of women who had volunteered for an exercise study (volunteers), and another group who were eligible for the same study but who chose no to participate (non-volunteers). Self-efficacy and the theory of planned behavior were examined to see if their constructs were determinants for exercise participation in a structured program for this group of older women.

This book and changed my thinking and my life. It is a book of love. The Authors heart, and spirit are in every page. You will laugh, you will cry, but mostly you will feel the love of the person who put penned it. Sadly to say DC Brown, passed away on Valentines Day, February 14, 2002 at age 51. Everyone who has read this book, feels a great personal loss. Debra (Shenandoah to her cyber friends)and there are many who got to know Shen after reading her book. Debbie reached for her dream and did it,she saw her book published and soar to the top of the charts, when she became Author of the Year for 2001. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. d.c. brown passed away suddenly on 2/14/02. Although we came from completely different parts of the country, I was an on-line friend and the first to buy a copy of her book when it became available. The sequel was in progress - we talked about it a lot. If you haven't read this, her first and only book, do so and remember her with love. She was as terrific as the book. I will miss her every day for the rest of my life.

All hail the best Author in all the land!!! This is the best book that I have ever read. I can honestly say that I did not want it to end. The synopsis on the back of the book does not do it justice, but no synopsis could. The book must be read.
The book is written entirely in "present-tense", and throughout felt like Cyrus was telling the story to ME alone, like a letter I had just received in the mail.

I found this book to be a lesson for all of us to learn. The journey that was made was one we all have to take at one time or another. This author has made the journey easy for all of us to understand. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. We've been reading Eve's humor columns in Westchester papers for years. Glad she's finally put her best work into one book so everyone else can enjoy her wit and wisdom. We love her rich and famous fun-poking (Celebrity Sightings), her food obsessions (The Thruway's Best Dogs), and her insight into the female pshyche (Happy Wife, Happy Life). Her writing style is easy and colorful and will have you laughing out loud. Short humor pieces (only 2-3 pages each) make it perfect for the beach or the bed. Great read!

Views From A Front Porch.......2000-08-25

Paul LaViolette has painted a sensitive portrait of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The discriptive scenes, written in short vinettes, have the reader looking through LaViolette's eyes at the flora, birds, and marine life that dwell in this unique area of the United States. His scientific background as an oceanographer certainly added to my personal understanding of the coastline and waters of the Gulf Coast. However, it is written with such a personal touch that I feel like a visitor to LaViolette's home.
