Book Description
This funny and inspiring story of a lost and lovable guinea pig is now available in paperback. PeeWee, once a boy's dear pet, has been secretly released into the wilds of Central Park. But instead of relishing his freedom, PeeWee is at first a stranger in a strange land--until he meets Lexi, a city-wise squirrel who gives his new stubby-tailed friend some tips, as well as some confidence. It's not long before a series of perilous and eye-opening adventures turns this timid house pet into an endearing hero.
Customer Reviews:
Very nice and relaxing book.......2005-12-09
I read this book in 2 days... just now finished. It was an excellent book that I don't regret reading. In fact, it was not boring at all and it provides some very good lessons for young readers in life. I'd recommend it to any parent to read to their child, or a child seeking a good small (not to many pages) book.
mom of animal lover.......2005-08-22
My kindergartener loves this series. I agree that the idea of an animal being left in the park is a difficult one, but we discussed why we would never do this to our pet, and how dangerous it would be for him, and then moved on and enjoyed a wonderful story with great messages and wonderful opportunites to discuss the perspective of others. My professional expertise is in cognitive development, and this book provides valuable opportunities for children to think about others' perspectives and think about the larger world around them. It is a book that can be enjoyed by both parents and children. I'd highly recommend it.
Adorable Book for Young Reader's.......2004-02-26
PeeWee, a small guinea pig, is born in Casey's Pet Shop, along with his four siblings, where his Mother takes care of them all. As they begin to grow, PeeWee becomes interested in the scraps of newspaper lining his cage, and soon his Mother is teaching him how to read, as she used to be the class pet in an elementary school, and learned alongside all of the children. Before long, PeeWee is adopted by a nice man, who brings him home as a birthday present for his nephew. Things are good for a while, until the boy goes away, and somehow PeeWee finds himself all alone in New York City's Central Park. Lucky for him, he meets up with Lexi, a very street-wise squirrel, who takes Pee-Wee under his tail, and begins showing him the ropes of living in the wild. Soon PeeWee is torn between searching for his owner, and his nice safe cage, or staying in the depths of Central Park, where he has to fend for his life.
Being someone who has loved guinea pigs all of her life, and has owned many in the past (all have sadly passed away), I couldn't resist picking up PEEWEE'S TALE at the bookstore. The cover alone sold me, but the plot of the story made me even more eager to purchase the book. Johanna Hurwitz has created a fantastic story completely narrated and explained by a group of adorable animals, namely PeeWee, much in the same fashion of Betty Boegehold (Here's Pippa!). The art, by Patience Brewster, is amazing, and resembles the animals so closely that you actually feel that you are looking at a photograph. Children of all ages, along with their parents, will love reading about PeeWee's adventures, and looking at the beautiful drawings that accompany them.

I would rate it 5 stars.......2004-01-12
My favorite character in this book is Pee Wee because I like hamsters. Pee Wee does not remind me of anybody I know. My favorite part is when Pee Wee starts to get the hang of living in wild life. I would recommend this book to my friend Lucy because she likes cute stuff. I like the happy parts of the book. If Pee Wee were a person and he went to my school I would be friends with him if he were nice, but not if he were not nice.
Pee Wee rates high for my pee-wee reader!.......2001-09-10
My son learned to read using Johanna Hurwitz's marvelous Russell/Riverside Kids series, and so we were very excited to begin Pee Wee's Tale. We were not disappointed! The animal story is a nice diversion from Hurwitz's more realistic fiction, but still has all of her markings as an author: humor, empathy and strong characterization. Yes, my son was concerned about the guinea pig's plight, and yes, the release of the guinea pig into the park raised an eyebrow...but it also incited some wonderful discussion about caring for pets and how animals adapt in the wild. Besides being an exciting and provocative chapter book for emergent readers, I think this would make a great classroom read-aloud, and I am giving it as a gift to my son's teacher! Also, don't miss Lexi's Tale, the sequel from a squirrely point of view!

Customer Reviews:
Mom of two.......2005-08-22
My Kindergartener loves this series, and I love all the little messages and opportunities for discussions that the book affords. The story is all about animals and life in Central Park from their perspective. The tidbits we learned about Guinea Pigs are right on (we own one) and the opportunity for perspective taking is very good for kids this age (developmental psych is my area of expertise professionally). Enjoyable read for the whole family.

Let's have fun!
Stuart Little and his brother, George, can't wait to go to the amusement park. But if you're Stuart's size, how do you keep up with your big brother? By visiting the fun house, of course!
Customer Reviews:
the mighty mouse.......2004-05-17
Have you ever imagined a mouse who can talk?
I read this book because I was wondering how stuart played with his brother and how they have fun together. I recommend this book because it is about the the children's favorite author. You might wonder who is he. He is Stuart. You might not know him. But i bet that you are wondering how big is he. If you want to know more about him read his book and you will like it.
One of the problem is that stuart is not able to ride some games at the museum with Goerge.
Some details are that stuart is a mouse and he is very small.
I recomend this book because it make wonder how what he eat.

Thriller/Suspense: Isabel "Stan" Stanley's mother's been hoping a man would fall in Stan's lap, but a spy diveing through the sunroof of her car in a hail of bullets, isn't what momma had in mind!!! Stan's sure this wasn't what momma had in mind.
Customer Reviews:
Recommended Highly!.......2005-12-22
Isabel Stanley has a twin she thinks is better looking and more outgoing than her. Her mother is always nagging her to get married. Her life is low-key, boring, and she plays keyboards in a band with some young boys and goes to church choir like a good little Baptist girl should.
All this changes when she drives home from choir practice one night, and a tall, handsome stranger jumps into her car while being shot at. Her world is about to turn upside down and change for the better, and she is about to find out that she's highly attractive to more than one member of the opposite gender.
This book is fun, with a compelling mystery and just the right kind of romance to keep you glued to the pages. Also, Jones has a real talent for composing sharp, sparkling wit in her characters' dialog and for keeping you guessing right up to the end. Best of all, her heroine, Stan, is a humorously self-deprecating woman most of us other women can relate to, and that's what makes this story so much of a treat. Sexy without ever resorting to trashiness, giving equal time to a truly engrossing whodunnit, it's almost nostalgic. Romantic mysteries of this quality are very hard to find, and I'm looking forward to reading more books by this intelligent, witty author.

Release Date: 2003-08-14 |
Book Description
To look at Oscar Westerwit, you might think, Hey, just another New York City squirrel. Only thing is, you'd be wrong. . . .
For Oscar, life is good in New York City in the year 1900. He's the Mayor of Central Park -- the greatest place on earth for the squirrels, chipmunks, mice, and other animals who live there. He's the manager of his baseball team, the Central Park Green Sox, and shortstop, too. What could be bad?
Plenty, that's what! Big Daddy Duds, jewel thief, all-round thug, and leader of rats, is about to invade the park with five hundred of his closest friends. And when he does, the other animals who live there will be turned out of their homes. Everyone looks to the Mayor to save them, but he may not even be able to save himself from the invaders. The Mayor of Central Park is a rich and fragrant evocation of old New York, with a community of animals who are as lively as characters in a Damon Runyon story, brought to life in a blend of humor and heartbreak that is vintage Avi.
Customer Reviews:
fairly good story.......2005-05-23
The setting of this book takes place in 1900. The main character in the book is Oscar Westerwit, a squirrel who loves baseball and Broadway musicals. He heads up a team of animals to over come a gangster rat named Big Daddy Duds who ties to bring trouble to the park area. Find out if their plan works in The Mayor Of Central Park!
The book was easy and fun to read.
The characters in the book are animals. Children enjoy animal stories most of the time.
