Book Description
DNA-chip analysis has come a long way since the first conference in Moscow in 1991. Nowadays, DNA-microarrays seem to be a common commodity in biological sciences. The complexity hidden behind the apparent ease of such studies, however, is highlighted by the fact that it took about ten years before the methodology really set off. Also, on closer scrutiny, one realises that some problems still remain. Nevertheless, microarrays produce data on a scale beyond imagination a few years ago. The authors of the book took part in bringing this about. They are well-known experts in the field, many - like Edwin Southern, Hans Lehrach, Radoje Drmanac, Pavel Pevzner and Charles Cantor - have been actively pursuing array technology for more than a decade. They demonstrate the continuous development in both technology and application areas and elucidate on critical points that need to be considered when performing microarray analyses.

Book Description
Biotechnological Applications of Photosynthetic Proteins: Biochips, Biosensors and Biodevices provides an overview of the recent photosystem II research and the systems available for the bioassay of pollutants using biosensors that are based on the photochemical activity. The data presented in this book serves as a basis for the development of a commercial biosensor for use in rapid pre-screening analyses of photosystem II pollutants, minimising costly and time-consuming laboratory analyses.
Book Description
The microfluidic lab-on-a-chip allows scientists to conduct chemical and biochemical analysis in a miniaturized format so small that properties and effects are successfully enhanced, and processes seamlessly integrated. This microscale advantage translates into greater sensitivity, more accurate results, and better information. Microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip for Chemical and Biological Analysis and Discovery focuses on all aspects of the microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technologies and offers an overview of the available technology, its limitations, and its breakthroughs over the years. It emphasizes analytical applications of microfluidic technology and offers in-depth coverage of micromachining methods, microfluidic operations, chemical separations, sample preparation and injection methods, detection technology, and various chemical and biological analyses. Other topics of interest include the use of polymeric chips, fluid flow valve and control, single-cell analysis, DNA and RNA amplification techniques, DNA hybridization, immunoassays and enzymatic assays. Originally conceived as a single chapter published in Ewing's Analytical Instrumentation, this book is a gateway to the vast literature and conference proceedings on the topic. Microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip for Chemical and Biological Analysis and Discovery expands upon its roots to present a comprehensive treatment of microfluidic lab-on-a-chip methods and applications for novices and advanced researchers alike.

Book Description
This timely book offers a rare view of the science and technology of DNA microarrays, providing up-to-date insights into DNA microarray research by a distinguished group of contributors from many of the hottest laboratories in this exciting new field. "Biochip Microarrays" is for any scientist or biotechnology professional with a basic grounding in molecular biology who wishes to learn more about the science of microarrays, how the technologies of several major biotech companies are interrelated and how these technologies will transform many areas of biomedical and agricultural research in the very near future.
Customer Reviews:
Outdated series of advertisements.......2004-03-25
This book is little more than a series of plugs from biotech firms trying to sell their technologies. It's seriously outdated anyway, so don't bother.
A snapshop of the quickly changing state of the art.......2001-12-16
_Microarray Biochip Technology_ provides a nice summary of microarray technologies at the time of publication (early 2000) from one of the persons (Mark Schena) who ought to know. To learn the latest and greatest, you'll still have to find the most recent review articles. However, this book is a useful handbook for getting started with the basics of microarray technologies.
The focus is on the hardware for spotting, not as much on scanning or data analysis. I like it somewhat better as a practical guide for the basics than Rampal's _DNA Arrays_, which covers a alternate uses of microarrays.
A good door to enter the microarray field.......2001-08-13
This book is quite basic and it does not have specific protocols however it does give you a general overview to methods of several players in the field. You just have to keep on reminding yourself that each company presents itself so everything is seen through the optimistic point of view.
Excellent book !.......2000-07-07
This is a book for the people interesting the microarray technology. Very helpful for the begineer , and also for the experts. A lot of resources for the applications, and details in the hardware, software ,and fabricating

Book Description
This authoritative text begins with an introduction to basic microarray technology. The author then provides clear explanations of the conceptual and theoretical basis of this technology, followed by thorough and multi-disciplinary coverage of modern and emerging applications. The coverage includes chapters on microarray informatics, gene expression profiling, genetic diagnostics, and novel microarray technologies.
Customer Reviews:
The other reviewer is right about the misleading title.......2005-09-10
Despite the fact that this book has very little about microarray data analysis, it is still a very good book about microarray technology. The author even introduces the reader to the basic organic chemistry and the physics necessary for fully understanding what is a microarray and how it works. The book has many interesting information which I did not see in other similar books and which can help you create the necessary microarray culture you will need. On the other hand, the book does not provide protocols or detailed methods for your experiments (if you are looking for something like this you will need the "DNA MICROARRAYS: A Molecular cloning manual" which is some kind of Maniatis of the microarrays).
In relation to data analysis this book does not provide you with even the basics for analysing your data, which is a fairly complex task. If you need help with that (and you are a biologist) I would suggest "Data analysis tools for DNA Microarrays" by Sorin Draghici, which is a very good intro book to data analysis and is not too hard on the math side (actually it is as simple as possible but without oversimplifying it). If you are a math person than you might prefer Terry Speed's "Statistical Analysis of Gene Expression Microarray Data" or Cabrera's "Exploration and Analysis of DNA Microarray and Protein Array Data".
Highly Recommended.......2003-11-01
"...the book is highly recommended as an excellent one stop resource on microarray technology" (Proteomics)
Recommended Book.......2003-07-25
"...a very personal, encyclopedic, diffuse compendium of everything known about microarrays...fun to read...full of information that a working biologist...might be quite interested to learn." (ASM News, Vol. 69, No. 7, 2003)
A grand introduction to a daunting field.......2003-07-01
As an emerging discipline, Microarray analysis is somewhat overwhelming and this book provides an excellent overview and introduction. While it does not give the reader the ability to perform high level data analysis, it certainly provides the criteria which would be necessary to design one. I personally rather enjoyed the casual and light hearted editaorial handling of what could have been a very dry text. I am an engineer, interested in the techniques of Microarray analysis more than the actual execution, but even I found the book extremely valuable. An excellent introductory and intermediate text. Readable by and valuable to almost anyone with a basic background in and understanfding of the life sciences. Extraordinary and a great addition to any library!
Excellent Foundational Text on Microarray Technology.......2003-06-22
The Microarray Analysis book by Dr. Mark Schena does an excellent job of taking the reader thru the multiple technologies and science disciplines required to understand and use the power of the microarray. It's interdisciplinary and broad approach allows complete understanding of the field without wasting time on aspects of the field which are sill evolving. It's elegantly written. Chapter 13, which talks about the use of microarrays in genetic screening, testing and diagnostics, is one of Schena's greatest accomplishments, in a historic and socio-economic sense. This contribution alone, makes the book a must read to prepare for the microarray revolution in medicine, agriculture, ecology and bio-threat detection. Strongly recommended reading for anyone seriously interested in Microarrays, be they students, professors expanding their horizons or CEO's hoping to mine microarrays. Hats off to Dr. Mark Schena!
