Book Description
Born in 1895 in a remote fishing village in Spain, Cristóbal Balenciaga learned sewing and tailoring at his mother’s knee. By 1937, the talented and persistent young man had opened his own design salon in Paris, and in the years following World War II he emerged as a designer to be reckoned with in the world of haute couture. The House of Balenciaga grew to serve an international clientele from locations in Paris, Madrid, and Barcelona, and from 1937 to its closing in 1968 created some of the most outstanding and innovative examples of French and Spanish haute couture of the era.
This beautifully illustrated book presents nearly 70 Balenciaga creations for day and evening, along with 25 hats, from the extraordinary archives of the Texas Fashion Collection of the University of North Texas. The book also includes striking fashion photographs from Vogue magazine and Harper’s Bazaar by Richard Avedon and Louise Dahl-Wolfe. A series of essays explores many aspects of the designer’s work, among them his contributions to fashion history; connections with such other prominent designers as Hubert de Givenchy and Oscar de la Renta; important relationships with Neiman Marcus and fashion buyer Bert de Winter in Dallas; and his close friend and client Claudia Heard de Osborne.

Superb!.......2007-09-02
M. Balenciaga was a master couturier so lacking today as one considers haute couture, especially, as the French houses of haute couture are virtually gone. At the time of M. Balenciaga's impact from the 1930s through 1968 when he closed his Parisian house, there were many more houses of haute couture. He, like Chanel, Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain, Mainbocher, Jacques Fath, Schiaparelli, Vionnet, and Gres to name a few, flourished as women from around the globe turned to the tradition and process of the haute couture as the pinnacle of what it meant to being well-dressed. Out of this number, the creations of M. Balenciaga stand-out. There is that certain something about his work which commands and rivets the attention. Yes, unquestionably elegant, imbued with masterful design, quality, and exacting a nobility for the wearer which she may or may not have actually possessed, but still whenever I view his creations I think to myself "more". Unlike today where being anonymous seems to be the rule of what passes for style, M. Balenciaga assured a woman would never be forgotten. This volume pays homage to that certain something and begs the question "where are the contemporary talents?" At the moment, in Paris there are only in my view, Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel and Valentino. These individuals know how to dress their haute couture clients (especially, those not wishing to dress perennially 18 years old) whereas the remaining haute couture houses present nothing but a media circus, for too long lead by that dreadful costumier posing as a couturier at Christian Dior. For the sheer pleasure of pondering something beautiful, I recommend this volume as well as Balenciaga by Marie-Andrée Jouve and Jacqueline Demornex published in 1991.
absolutely beautiful.......2007-04-30
gorgeous pics of gorgeous clothes. this guy is my fav. when it comes to couture and this book won't disappoint. well worth the money. yeah, Dior is great too but this guy really is the 'master'
Seminal Text on Balenciaga.......2007-01-19
My company produced the mannequins used to exhibit the couture in this fine text, so for me it was a delight, that bias aside, the forward by Givenchy is worth the cover price alone. The text my Myra Walker is insightful and the book is beautifully ilustrated. Seeing Balenciaga's illustrations along side his creations is a joy for any true fashionista. The book is a homage to Balenciaga's work, but not Balenciaga, who was a private and complicated gentleman, and who would like to remembered that way, for his work, not for himself.
Balenciaga and his legacy.......2007-01-17
This is a fabulous book! I love the images and history. I would recommend it to anyone who has an appreciation for fashion history and photography.

a feast for the eyes.......2000-03-15
Truly thorough text and photographic record of the work of the acknowledged source of the most beautiful fashion embroidery in history. Lesage has long been known for its opulent designs but some of us spring chickens have a surprise in store, and when you open this book your jaw will truly drop. Sample pieces, appliques, closeups of detail work, fringed trims, whole garments, movie stills, accessories, and designer sketches, and all of it pure inspiration for we creative types who make fashion. For sheer invention and brilliancy of design, flip through the photos and allow them to breathe color and texture into your work. If you're a fashion junkie or student, settle into a comfy chair and read the text for an in-depth look at the history of the premier embroidery firm in the world. Despite the industrial revolution and now the information age, it's all still done by hand with simple tools, and some of the examples have numbers representing the hours of work required, which will shock the faint of heart. But if you're contemplating using feathers, beads, sequins, silk ribbon, cording, floss, bullion, fine metallic threads, jewels or rhinestomes in a new and inventive way and just need a jump-start, it's in this book. The price is well worth the images (as many as 6 on a page) and it would make a nifty coffee table book as well. The perfect use, in my eyes, would be as a gift to a young girl showing a strong interest in fashion. Let her learn from the very best. For the rest of us, it will be a flight into the same world Clara discovered in the Nutcracker: pure fantasy come true. Here we can shed ratty blue jeans as well as the stifling little navy suit, and imagine ourselves covered in dazzling ornamentation. It's enough to make one want to plan a fancy dress ball for an excuse to get dressed up!
The most beautiful book I have ever seen........1999-04-06
This is the most beautiful book I own and have ever seen, and I have many of the best in the fields of fashion and textile arts. This book covers them both. If you love couture and embroidery this is the book for you. The text is interesting and the photos are first rate. A wonderful insite into the most famous embroidery house in the world! Take note, this is not a how-to book. It is about the most creative facet of couture history - embellishment. A must have for any fashion and/or embroidery enthusiast.
Book Description
Harnessing the romance of the world of fashion and high art, this fascinating story of a collection of miniature mannequins describes the birth of Théâtre de la Mode, the Theater of Fashion. Full of stars such as Robert Ricci (Nina Ricci's son), filmmaker Jean Cocteau, and other members of the 1944 haute couture industry, the story follows 237 miniature fashion dolls through their epic tour of Europe and North America, bringing fashion, elegance, and beauty into a war-torn world. Also included are new color photographs of the mannequins, the reconstructed sets, and close-up details of clothing so sewers, designers, and fashion mavens can appreciate the creativity of Paris designers at the end of World War II.

Saw them in person...........2007-04-16
I went to the museum that owns this collection... the Maryhill Museum of Art in Washington State (About 2 hours outside Portland, OR). The photos don't do these creations justice I must say. The details on such a tiny scale are truely amazing! I've been meaning to get this book, its been on my wish list forever. I ended up getting it at the museum for full price, but it was worth it!
Exquisite reproduction of 1940's fashions.......2007-04-12
I saw an article about these dolls, that had a few tantalizing photos. I am so glad I found this catalog of the show. The fashions are presented on 29" dolls, in a theater setting, and there are so many of them, I have to keep going back to look again. The story behind their creation is equally interesting.
Great book, but the pictures aren't so hot..........2004-05-18
The color and lighting in most of the photographs is poor...I understand this is an 'art' book, but when I am looking for a specific design, if the picture is going to be no bigger than a business card, I would hope it would at least be a straight on shot done in good lighting. If you want that, this is NOT the book for you...check it out from the library, at least then your disappointment won't cost you 20 bucks.
An Absolute Must-Own.......2004-01-06
Whatever your interest that led you to this book, you must purchase it. You'll find yourself studying this book from cover to cover, over and over. The little dolls and their story are mesmerizing.
from a British vintage fashion lover.......2002-11-26
I,m absolutely delighted to see this book back in print as I ,ve been searching for itf for years. The enlarged photos give an even better view of the detail and workmanship in these tiny garments. IIt,s a lovely symbol of postwar renewal and optimism to be treasured always.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointment.......2005-05-07
This book was disappointing for me. Most of the pictures are limited to designs from the years 1987-1995 - a fairly limited scope for a book with such a grand title. The photos are not all that great - their style is typical and safe, and becomes quite repetitive throughout the book. The cover photo is by far the best. After some introductory history which would be informative for a fashion novice, the text tries to be a poetic description and explanation of the picture - OUCH! Despite the disappointment, there are some very nice designs, which are shown in detail.
art of fashion.......1999-12-27
this is the most inspiring book. i love the beautiful designs, and this is a wonderful way to bring art into your home.
Skrebneski's talent as a premier fashion photographer shines.......1999-07-28
Skrebneski brings the passion in these gowns worn by models to life in his dramatically light photographs.
The gowns of Sardian, John Anthony, Cristobal Balenciaga, Pierre Balmain, Erik Mortensen, Geoffery Beene, Chanel, Lagerfeld, Dior, Gerre, Feraud, Galanos, De Givenchy (his source of inspiration throught out his career) Charles James, Lacroix, Lanvin, Montana, Laroche Norell, Poiret, Erte, Ricci, Gerard Pipart, Saint Laurent, Arnold Scaasi, Scherrer, Schiaparelli, Ungaro, Valentino, Philippe Venet, Versace, Mdme. Vionnet and Vera Wang are photographed in the most dramatic sense. The detail of couture is fully illustrated.
This book is an inspiration to all who are interested in fashion design.
very good, a must for all lovers of fashion.......1998-03-22
Pages are opened to reveal an almost disturbing beauty in the photographs by Victor Skrebneski of the world's greatest clothes. The book, The Art of Haute Couture, blurs the line between fashion and art until there is no distinction. Emphasis falls on various designers - arguably the best of our time - such as Givenchy and Chanel. In the photographs a portrayal of a beautiful, sophesticated and unreal type of life seems to unfold in the simple photography of beautiful clothes. Truly glamorous, this in a rare find for a lover of fashion, a must for someone who considers couture masterpieces, and designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and Versace nothing less than geniuses of art.

2005 Writers Notes Book Award Notable.......2005-04-20
In the office, we're known for scattered coffee mugs, moldy cheese, and the attire of an army-navy thrift store. Fashion icon Mary McFadden would be ashamed of us, or at least inspired to rummage through our refrigerator and bookroom in search of archeological ideas. Okay, probably not, but we're not ashamed to say that we thoroughly enjoyed leafing through her career history. The words and pictures in this volume affirm her vocation-a passion to integrate the salient manifestations of the past into the present environment and, no doubt, her life as well.
