Book Description
To Rebecca Solnit, the word "landscape" implies not only literal places but also the ground on which we invent our lives and confront our innermost troubles and desires. The organic world, to Solnit, gives rise to the social, political, and philosophical landscapes we inhabit. In these nineteen quirky, smart, and wryly humorous pieces, Solnit ranges across disciplines to explore nuclear test sites, deserts, clouds, caves, and the meaning of national borders--as well as ideas of the feminine and the sublime as they relate to our physical and psychological terrains.
Sixty images throughout the book display the work of the contemporary artists under discussion, including landscape photographers, performance artists, sculptors, and installation artists. Alongside her text, Solnit's gallery of images provides a vivid excursion into new ways of perceiving landscape, bodies, and art. Animals and the human body appear together with space and terra firma as Solnit reconfigures the blurred lines that define nature.

Wonderful, Wide-Ranging Meditations on Art and the Environme.......2004-10-29
Rebecca Solnit's Savage Dreams is one of my favorite books, and this compilation of essays covers some of the same territory. She writes insightfully about the visual arts, the environment, and feminism in a way that causes us to look at the world differently. Her passion for the desert and its fragile ecosystems is especially evocative. I particularly liked her essays on dirt and Carlsbad Caverns.
Unlike a lot of criticism, her writing isn't overly difficult to read, and she infuses much of it with humor. She covered some artists whose work I love and introduced me to new ones. While reading this book, I have found myself thinking about language and space in new ways. The writer also asks us to question our relationship to the world in a powerful way.
Book Description
Today, illustration appears in design-related projects in a wide range of styles. One can find drawings done fleetingly by hand just as often as polished vector graphics created on computers. Motifs are not only being produced in pencil, chalk, airbrush and marker but also by mixing media, for example by combining illustration, photography and wallpaper. But when so many alluring possibilities currently exist in illustration, how can one stay up to date and how should one evaluate new developments?
Illusive is a collection of contemporary illustration from around the world that addresses the variety of existing techniques and puts them into context with explanatory text. It features personal designs alongside fashion illustration and commercial work produced for books or magazines - a diversity that reveals how the medium of illustration functions independently from trends. At the same time the book is also a survey of current tendencies and design approaches. Features introducing leading protagonists supplement the examples shown.
The fact that it presents manifold methods by such a broad spectrum of international designers side by side makes Illusive stimulating and educational reading for the professional illustrator.

Absolutely Amazing.......2007-05-04
This book is better than I expected, way better. Illusive has become a bottomless well of inspiration to me. Some of the art is a little out there and impractical, but thats what's great about this book. The art is both cutting edge and simple at times. My favorite chapter is the one that covers handmade elements combined with digital elements. If you're into cutting edge art and want to expand your skill set buy this book ASAP!!!!

GORGEOUS!.......2007-01-05
I bought this book along with the "Bologna Annual Illustrators of Children's Books" catalogue and leave both of them on my coffee table. The illustrations as well as graphic artwork for anything from books to band posters and advertisements are beautiful and very inspiring. I find myself sitting on the couch flipping through it regularly. Well worth the money!

Good introduction.......2006-11-04
Overall, this is a good introduction to Northern Renaissance art and the cultural mindset that produced it.
Like many works of revisionist history, this book is a bit heavy-handed at times in its effort to prove that Northern art is as worthy of study as Italian Renaissance art. But overall, the contrast between the two different artistic traditions is effective.
An exciting survey.......2001-07-18
I've loved the art of this period for years, but had little academic grounding in it. This book lets me return to old favorites with new eyes.
This, in common with other volumes in the "Perspectives" series, offers high quality (though small) reproductions of important works, up-to-date analysis and discussion of the art and the contexts in which it was created. Harbison's tone is informative, if ocasionally a little too sententious. But it's a very small price to pay, given the overall excellence of his work in this volume. It's obvious that Harbison loves this period, and he transmits his excitement for these works to the reader in concise language that is accessible to a lay audience.
Of particular interest is the discussion of how the Northern Rennaisance related to and differed from what was going on in Italy at the time. The only major weakness: not enough of a focus on Durer. But it's hard to get sufficient focus on any artist in a book this condensed.
An excellent book for those familiar with the period, or those wanting to get acquainted with a school of art often unjustly overshadowed by its southern contemporary.
Art of the Northern Renaissance in historical context.......2001-01-31
Informative, smart and well-written, Craig Harbison's "The Mirror of the Artist" provides an excellent, brief introduction to the sensibility, historical context, and practice of art in the North. From the attitude toward realism, to patronage among the growing class of government bureaucrats, to the market for art or the influence of the Reformation, the book offers an enhanced understanding of artistic interest and social situations in which the paintings were made -- without ever forgetting their aesthetic dimension. The best tribute I can offer is that I immediately went back to Amazon to order Harbison's "Jan Van Eyck: The Play of Realism", a $35 large format paperback. Minor quibble: Although well-illustrated for a paperback this size, with the book just about 6.25" x 9.5", more details should have been illustrated when details were discussed in larger works. (I'm still looking for the barely visible figure of the devil above the cow in the "Portinari Altarpiece".) But this is a rare problem.
Book Description
Responding to Art: Form, Content, & Context is designed to excite and interest students with minimal knowledge of art and limited confidence in responding to it. To this end, the book starts at the students' introductory level and sets out to stimulate their interest and active participation. From the onset,
Responding to Art integrates art and design forms that the students are already familiar with and have some interest in: including CD covers, magazine advertisements, fashion styles, websites, crafts, product design, and folk art. In addition, the book engages students and builds their confidence by incorporating into the opening chapter responses to art by introductory-level students like themselves. This sends an immediate message to the students that their own thoughts and feelings are valid, valued, and diverse. With expanded interest, confidence, and knowledge, students are prepared for more challenging art forms, information, and concepts.

Beginners overview.......1997-07-14
I received and looked over this book. It is an overview of dress in the medieval period. However, it contains no actual garment pictures or period illustrations. The drawings appear to be done for the book itself. This may not be the book you want if you are doing costume research, but it may be helpful to a school or beginning re-enacter

Book Description
MultipleCity 2003 was a project that gathered artists from several countries and asked them to react creatively to Panama city. Each artist was invited to create a work in the streets that would be of the streets. The key requirement was that the artworks had to respond to some physical, social and cultural aspect of the city. The artists were also asked to actively relate to the city and struggle with its myriad seductions and pressing problems; and moreover to ensure that both the process of creation and final works (without necessarily being interactive) would involve their host communities and have some sort of impact upon them.
MultipleCity is the most important international artistic event in the entire history of Panama. Featured artists included: Artway of thinking (Italy), Brooke Alfaro (Panama), Francis Alÿs (Belgium/Mexico), Ghada Amer (Egypt,) Gustavo Araujo (Panama), Gustavo Artigas (Mexico), Yoan Capote (Cuba), Cildo Meireles (Brazil), Juan Andrés Milanés (Cuba), Jesús Palomino (Spain), Humberto Vélez (Panama), Gu Xiong (China/Canada). A DVD is included with the book.
This catalogue, published almost a year after the event, portrays much more than the event itself. It includes essays on the complex dynamics of Panama City and its pressing urban problems – which has relevance and resonance for other poor developing countries that face rapid urbanization.
The text is in English and Spanish.
