    Book Description

Newcomers to the field of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) often have difficulty establishing a clear picture of the overall field. The reason for this is because, while there are many books devoted to special topics within the field, there is none that provides an overview of the field as a whole. An Introduction to Inertial Confinement Fusion fills this gap with an overview of the processes involved in ICF presented at an accessible level. After a broad overview, the book follows the processes from the driver technology to burn physics in chronological order. As each topic appears, the author details the physical concepts and obstacles. The book concludes with a look to the future prospects of the field.

      Book Description

This book is on inertial confinement fusion, an alternative way to produce electrical power from hydrogen fuel by using powerful lasers or particle beams. Two huge laser facilities are presently under construction to show that this method works. It involves the compression of tiny amounts (micrograms) of fuel to thousand times solid density and pressures otherwise existing only in the centre of stars. Thanks to advances in laser technology, it is now possible to produce such extreme states of matter in the laboratory. Recent developments have boosted laser intensities again with new possibilities for laser particle accelerators, laser nuclear physics, and fast ignition of fusion targets. This is a reference book for those working on beam plasma physics, be it in the context of fundamental research or applications to fusion energy or novel ultra-bright laser sources. The book combines quite different areas of physics: beam target interaction, dense plasmas, hydrodynamic implosion and instabilities, radiative energy transfer as well as fusion reactions. Particular attention is given to simple and useful modelling, including dimensional analysis and similarity solutions. Both authors have worked in this field for more than 20 years. They want to address in particular those teaching this topic to students and all those interested in understanding the technical basis.

                      Book Description

The most poignant of all De Vries's novels, The Blood of the Lamb is also the most autobiographical. It follows the life of Don Wanderhop from his childhood in an immigrant Calvinist family living in Chicago in the 1950s through the loss of a brother, his faith, his wife, and finally his daughter-a tragedy drawn directly from De Vries's own life. Despite its foundation in misfortune, The Blood of the Lamb offers glimpses of the comic sensibility for which De Vries was famous. Engaging directly with the reader in a manner that buttresses the personal intimacy of the story, De Vries writes with a powerful blend of grief, love, wit, and fury.

Very pleased that the University Of Chicago Press has brought this book back into print. Now I can discard the looseleaf version that I photocopied from a friend and purchase this one. This is a poignant and funny book that, after reading you will never forget. Buy 3 or 4 copies of it, because you will want all your friends and relatives to read it too!

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable read.......2003-02-19

Peter DeVries was a very popular writer who contributed many stories to the New Yorker in the fifties and sixties and who wrote several very funny novels. This autobiographical novel describes the growth to maturity of Don Wanderhope, member of a strickly Calvinist Dutch Reform family, whose brother becomes a heretic, whose father becomes addicted to drink and goes insane, and whose wife commits suicide after giving him a child whom he loves deeply. At age eleven, his daughter contracts leukemia, initially does quite well, but then succumbs to a staph infection in the hospital.
Wanderhope - I suspect the name is no accidental choice - in grief stricken anger rails against God and man. "I made a tentative conclusion. It seemed from all of this that uppermost among human joys is the negative one of restoration. Not going to the stars, but learning that one may stay where one is. It was shortly after the evening in question that I had a taste of that truth on a scale that enabled me to put my finger on it." The happiest moment of his life comes when the doctor lets him know that his daughter will be all right - a mistake as it turns out. "The fairy would not become a gnome. We could break bread in peace again, my child and I. The greatest experience open to man then, is the recovery of the commonplace."
The book has many humorous moments and profound insights, as Wanderhope struggles with religion as he tries to deal with the death of his only child.
"I believe that man must learn to live without those consolations called religious, which his own intelligence must by now have told him belong to the childhood of the race. Philosophy really can give us nothing permanent to believe in either. It is too rich in answers; each canceling out the rest.. The quest for meaning is foredoomed. Human life means nothing. But that is not to say that it is not worth living. What does a Debussy arabesque mean, or a rainbow, or a rose? A man delights in all of these knowing himself to be no more. A wisp of music and haze of dreams dissolving against the sun. Man has only his own two feet to stand on his own human trinity to see him through: reason, courage and grace and the first plus the second equals the third."

                      5 out of 5 stars A little known gem of a book........2003-01-27

The book is moving, witty, involving, and wise. It is hard to believe that this was published way back in 1961. This book sits now on my most beloved shelf. There is wit and sex and social commentary here, but the book rises above that. It is ultimately a book with a message, about stoic courage and grace, although not everyone is ready for the wisdom here. The book's ultimate message is that we should appreciate the moment and cherish those whom we love while we can. That, as Marcus Aurelius said, life is just loaned to us and, we ought to be ready, at any time, to gratefully say, "Here, I return that which has been loaned to me."

Peter De Vries's *Blood of the Lamb* is a novel of singular depth and humanity. De Vries was America's greatest humorist in the fifties and sixties, but in this work, he deals, from autobiographical experience, with his young daughter's struggle against leukemia. Overflowing with love, wit, fury, energy, and human grace, this book goes to the core of things. It ranks with the greatest works of 20th-century American literature, and it will surprise you. De Vries is best known for his great work for *The New Yorker* and for comedic novels (many made into films) rich in puns, the anatomy of absurdity, and the depredations and joys of libido....but *Blood of the Lamb* is his transcendent work. It's out of print now, and used copies are often hard to come by. It's an exceptional and humanizing experience. It is a moving sublimation of irredeemable tragedy.

4 out of 5 stars Moving and Funny.......2000-06-07

Like all of De Vries work, this is a very funny book devoted to a very serious subject. The serious subject is loss of faith, in this case elicited by the serious illness and eventual death of a young child. Based apparently on events within De Vries' own family, Blood of the Lamb has all the hallmarks of De Vries best work; superb humor, exceptionally witty word play, and great emotional power. The conclusion is remarkably moving. I have recommended this book to physicians in training to convey the incredible suffering experienced by families with ill children.

So it started off as a 4 star book (since I'm more of a horror/dark fantasy guy, it would have been 5 stars if the book's direction was more along those lines and not action/thriller), and i was really into Father Carenza and the sexy reporter...but somewhere along the lines Carenza became a minor character and Mr. Monteleone stopped writing about him and started focusing more on the TV evangelist and other supporting characters. Towards the end of the novel, it would have been great to get more insights from Carenza. And I'm not really sure what the point of Sister Etienne was. Was that ever resolved? The big problem is that Mr. Monteleone sets up far too many questions for the sequel, rather than making this more of a stand alone book. At some point i'll track down the sequel and give it a read. OVERALL TAKE on the book - very enjoyable, quick read, raises lots of interesting questions...but too many questions and not enough focus on the main character towards the end.

4 out of 5 stars Great plot, but poor ending.......2005-09-07

Here is a book which had all the makings for a truly great novel. It has a great plot, with a very believable storyline, i.e. the origins of the Anti-Christ. I think in many respects this view of the Anti-Christ's origins is highly plausible, and I give much kudos to the author for developing it.

However, the ending was very anticlimatic. Maybe the author ran out of steam towards the end. Nevertheless an interesting book to read for many individuals (Christians and non-Christians alike) who may also be students of Eschatology (the study of end-times theology).

                      5 out of 5 stars Guts.......2005-07-16

It's nice to read a book by an author who has some guts. Monteleone's story is astounding. It fills you with hope, doubt, fear, joy and anger. This book really takes you on an emotional and spiritual journey with Vatican henchmen constantly on your tail. Think Robert Ludlum meets Dan Brown, although I think this book is by far better than anything the aforementioned scribes have penned. The ending is haunting and just plain out awesome. This is a book you wish never ended. I hated having to close the backcover. Luckily, there is a sequel called "The Reckoning". That's in my shopping cart!

3 out of 5 stars blood of the lamb.......2002-03-09

This is an interesting book with a controversal subject. It does contain many errors in facts that it uses as part of the story line, so the author should do better research ie: southern Indiana is as flat as a pool ( it actually is rolling hills, Northern Indiana is flat). May be controversal to those who are religious for it does show some of the not so pleasant sides of many types of Christian religions. Borders on medical science fiction for a basis to the story. Easy reading, not really scary, but controversal subject.

3 out of 5 stars contrived & cynical, but fun.......2000-10-13

This is a prototypical high concept thriller. When thirty year old Father Peter Carenza seemingly wields lightning in fending off a mugger in Brooklyn, he is summoned to the Vatican. There we discover that, three decades ago, forces within the Vatican secured a DNA sample from the Shroud of Turin and decided to try to clone Christ. Now their dream is approaching fruition but they quickly discover that they can not control their own creation. And when Peter's behavior starts to become somewhat odd, there's little anyone can do to stop him, not even the Vatican's own ruthless assassin.

It's all exactly as contrived as it sounds, but Mr. Monteleone has fun with his premise. My main objection is that he's entirely too cynical and the portraits of religion and the religious border on bigotry. But taken on its own terms, its fairly entertaining.

The previous Pope died in his arms, blessing him with his last breath. He can perform miracles. His mother was a virgin. His DNA came from the Shroud of Turin. Peter Carenza is the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy and a secret, Vatican-sponsored experiment. But is he the Second Coming, or something far, far worse? Believers the world over hail Carenza as the new Pope and rejoice as he creates a new church for the new millennium. A few people know the truth-that mixing science with the works of God has created not a Saviour but the Anti-Christ.Now the latest--and last--Pope scours the world for the human guardians of the Biblical seven seals, which must be destroyed before the final cataclysm can begin. Opposing him are a lone Archbishop, the female American journalist who chronicled Carenza's rise to power, and Peter's mother, a nun who truly hears the Word of the Lord.

The Pope is dead! The replacement chosen unanimously by the Vatican was the illegitimate son of a nun who was raised in a Brooklyn orphanage. He became a parish priest who could perform miracles. Is he a savior or the anti-Christ? Everyone, even his mother, knows that things are not working according to scripture.

Monteleone used John's Revelation as most of his substantiation that the search for seven signs and Pope Peter II's impending marriage are against the Catholic beliefs. It is predicted that he will be the "last pope" because he is from America, what they call the New World.

He is certainly the unusual Vatican occupant in every way and just may turn the Mother Church upside down. Peter Carenza was defintely the wrong choice to replace the Polish pope. Lord, help us!

Television is full of full of strange and wierd stories. Newspapers provide vivid accounts of macabre and sinister events. It begs the question: 'can the average person any longer be shocked?' Fortunately, the answer is a resounding YES! Thomas Moneleone has done so in "The Reckoning."

Consider developments of the past few years. What are the implications of the cloning of a sheep named Dolly? Almost immediately following that event there began debates regarding the efficacy of cloning human beings. But, if human beings WERE to be cloned, whom would the world first want to clone? The author of this masterful novel takes a stab at the answer.

Suppose, dear reader, that the scientific community were to take a small strand of DNA from dried blood on the Shroud of Tourin that may have covered the dead body of Jesus. And, suppose, for a moment, that the person conceived from this scientific exercise were to grow up to become a Roman Catholic priest. And suppose he were, one day, become the Bishop of Rome...the Pope?

This is a gripping tale that gives the reader an adventrous story as well as a look behind the scenes at the Vatican. There is action galore that takes place on a worldwide scale. Anyone who enjoys a gripping story of intrigue and also fanticizes about possibilities in our modern world will find the two combined in this novel. Truly the story grabs the reader from the first page to the very end. Well worth reading.

I wanted to like this book a lot less than I did. After all, it's got just about everything in it that bothers me about bad writing: gratuitous action (see INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DUMB for the ultimate gratuitous action cultural artifact), whirled views (New Age-ism on the half-shell: the Seven Churches of Revelation turn out to be--surprise!!--holy sites of the world's major religions), bad theology (Catholics spouting tired works-righteousness views), a dodgy premise combined with shaky metaphysics (a clone from DNA from Jesus' blood equals Superman), etc. But somehow the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I know it's probably a really stupid book, but I generally liked it anyhow. Maybe Monteleone is the Clive Cussler of theological thrillers. One could do worse.

                        5 out of 5 stars A fitting conclusion!.......2000-02-21

Moteleone picks up where he left off in BLOOD OF THE LAMB. The first reviewer misses the point of the novel. It IS unheard of for a Pope to wear slacks and a skull cap...THAT WAS THE POINT! Pope Peter is restructuring, or even trying to kill, the precedent of the role of Pope. Anyways, Monteleone has outdone himself and writes some vivid action sequences and some beautiful land settings. Good stuff! Now go out and buy the damn thing!

                        1 out of 5 stars ZERO stars!.......1999-12-13

A story that was born of a great concept (A cloning of DNA from the bloodline of Christ) falls so far short that Monteleone can be accused of churning out a book to make sure he has money at the Christmas season.

This book belongs in the Science Fiction section of your local bookstore. Research into basic Vatican protocol is non-existant ("Grace" is a title of respect for a Bishop, not a Cardinal or Pope). The Pope wearing tee-shirts and not a scull cap is unheard of.

Monteleone does not capture the basic essence of the story. The flashback to the the "why" this Pope was created falls short as almost a bookmark His timeline is so far off in cloning that it renders the story insulting to Vatican fiction (and non-fiction) readers (not to mention typos in hte text - page 216 for example).

For those who are looking for a fast paced Vatican novel (that you can go beyond the 5th chapter and still remain in suspense) go read (or re-read)Vicar of Christ and let this High School level novel be left to the library wher you can read it for free and only worry about your time being wasted.

As I married into this infamous family, I too was fascinated about the history. I married one of Ervil's sons....one that broke away from his cult upbringing and went on to raise a family who followed the life and teachings of Jesus. (our family) He was just a little guy while most of this was going on....but the scars were there just the same. Growing up in a cult and never seeing his dad....raising himself with many brothers and sisters and sister wives....later on running away from the threat of being killed...and then breaking away and starting a new life and a wonderful family...replacing the shackles of the cult lifestyle with Jesus...now THAT is the story that continues today. Sure there are some remaining family members still practicing polygamy or running from the police or even still believing in the many initial cult practices. But the stories of those who left that behind and went on to live wonderful lives are the stories that are truly inspiring.

It is one difficult struggle to break free from the beliefs of a cult especially when you knew nothing else. My husband did. The real stories of moving forward against all odds would be an awesome thing to hear about as well.

This is the second book I've read about the LeBarons and it is a subject that I'm fascinated by and can't get enough of.
What a story this is.Its a story I don't think is totally over.
This book was written by 2 reporters who had covered the case extensively when Ervil was still alive. They did their homework and the book is interesting and engaging with a healthy dose of background, not only on the LeBaron family history, but the Mormon church and polygamist splinter groups as well.
I stayed up longer than I should have several nights reading this book. The story is laid out artfully and flows easily.
I think the authors made one big mistake though. The book only goes up to Ervil's death.I think the authors thought that with him in prison and then dead that the LeBaron cult died too.
They make that assumption in the last few pages of the book. They couldn't have been more wrong. What happened in the years after Ervil's 1981 death could fill another book. And it did.
I highly recommend that you check out Scott Anderson's excellent work-The four o'clock murders if you want to know the many twists and happenings that occurred after Prophet of the cult of the Church of the Lambs of God died in prison.

5 out of 5 stars so here is the answer to the question: "what did the three mages do?".......2006-04-09

First of all: I think the author's name is Rogers. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Second: the books in this trilogy are the only ones I've read by the author, so I'm unbiased by his other work. For me, they came as one great treat, and I won't try to spoil it by linking them to previous or later novels.
And now: the first book of the "Blood of the Lamb" trilogy. The Expected One.
This is the alternate story of the first chapters of the New Covenant. There is the prophesized Messiah, the pro- and anti- factions among the different chapters of mage&warrrior priests, there even is a parallel set of events between the Bible and this book (my personal favourite, in this novel, is the demon Horde/Legion by other name, for those who know their gospel. But this is the story of what it could've been like, if the world would've had magic and keepers of it, real demons and saints, and the faith to endure through every challenge until the proof of the Messiah was given.
This was a great surprise especially as I've picked the book completely at random. The others I searched for, and they were worth it.
For those interested in the plot, I'll only say this: three warrior-mages are given the task to judge the claim of one Essaj of being the Messiah. They'll pass through many dangers, confront demons and magical sendings of their enemies, and find love where least expected. There will be miracles and signs, and eventually they'll make up their mind on the truth of Essaj's words. And they'll have a prophecy chaining them to the faith of the entire world.

The books are great read together, even if they can be read separate. Still, if you want the whole story (and once you'll start it, you will) get all the three books: "The Expected One", "The Devouring Void" and "The Riddled Man".

And you'll find out what the mages did, after all...

5 out of 5 stars Highly unusual theological fantasy.......2000-03-17

This sequel to Zorachus, set three hundred years later, is a gripping, violent fantasy whodunnit, highlighting the author's knowledge of philosophy and theology---as a series of grisly murders rocks their order, three Sharajnaghi wizards are dispatched to investigate one Essaj-Ben-Yussef, who just might be the Messiah. First-rate.

I am a professional writer, and a big fan of Mark Rogers' work. I can't say enough about the quality of the writing in this book. It is a crime that it, indeed all his works, are not better known. If you like to read, period, pick up this novel.

With so much plug-n-chug cranking out of fantasy trilogies, its hard to be interesting and original. Mark's reputation is for his hilarious Samaraui Cat books, but here he puts out a very good serious work with some quite nice twists and turns. Credit goes to Mark for his excellent storytelling skills. This is one of those books that you'll want to have two copies of: one to loan to friends and one to keep for yourself.

                              Book Description

How will the staunchly Christian members of a Victorian family deal with one of Christendom's most abhorrent creatures a bloodthirsty vampire?

Hannah Kristan enters the blood drinker's domain, believing her beloved husband dead. But Adrian waits, a changed man, for his grieving bride!

Angela Marshall is brought to believe. But will Christian charity save her or make her a profane communion sacrifice in the name of love?

Nathaniel Cravers, seeking to unearth his estranged family's shadowed past, becomes inextricably mired in the dark covenant that separated him from his rightful heritage!

Jonathan Cravers lives a haunted half-life with the conviction that Satan wields all power. Can love alter his self-condemning curse or will it sentence him to an even more unspeakable damnation?

God alone knows, and not even the band of stalwart Heavenly Guardians charged with watching over the humans and thwarting Satan's demonic legions are privy to His omnipotent design!

In post-Civil War Massachusetts, celestial angels watch in trepidation as Adrian Kristan returns to his birthplace to free himself and his unborn child from an old unholy pact. They know the dark power he is facing but are unable to intervene, barred by unstable faith and the demonic forces holding dominion over the inhabitants of Tall Pines.

At the center of the conflict is Jonathan Cravers, a manipulative vampire bent on self-preservation at any cost and Adrian's child is the key to his survival. However, Jonathan's fate rests in other, invisible, hands, and the more he attempts to bend lives to his will, the more control is wrested from him. Though he fights emotions that bring unbearable pain, he is drawn more deeply into a vortex of sentimentality that could be his undoing!

It is only when Angela Marshall arrives that the angels are granted entry past the diabolic sentinels to counsel the mortals Jonathan holds in his grasp. Initially horrified at discovering what he is, Angela is also fascinated, and she makes him begin to question the very basis of his existence. Even the angels are astonished to discover that Jonathan is more pawn than power at the hands of Satan's minions.

As the omnipotent forces of Good and Evil do battle, Jonathan comes to see Angela as his means to redemption if such a state is possible for him. But will her lifeblood be the required sacrifice for his salvation?

Heavenly love or Hell's fury--which holds the prevailing power?
