Book Description
During World War II, over 120,000 Japanese Americans were removed and confined four years in sixteen camps located throughout the western half of the United States. Yet the internment of Japanese Americans in concentration camps remains a largely unknown episode of World War II history. In these selections, Alice Yang Murray investigates the U.S. government's role in planning and carrying out the removal and internment of thousands of citizens, resident aliens, and foreign nationals, and the ways in which Japanese Americans coped with or resisted their removal and incarceration.

A Valuable Resource On The American Internment.......2003-04-20
This Review refers to the paperback edition of "What Did the Internment of Japanese Americans Mean? (Historians at Work)", composed by Roger Daniels, Peter Irons, Michi Weglyn, Gary Y. Okihiro, and Valerie J. Matsumoto and as compiled by Alice Yang Murray.
Murray's book is a compilation of several selections from prominent scholars and authors concerning the plight of those of Japanese descent caught in the Americas during World War II. A brief introduction providing insights into the lives of the authors and several questions accompany each selection. There is also a brief historical background of the internment preceding the selections. Murray provides an extensive list of other works witch may aid the reader in further studies of the topics represented following the selections. The book contains the following excerpts by the following authors; "The Decision for Mass Evacuation" - Roger Daniels, "Gordon Hirabayashi v. United States: A Jap's a Jap" - Peter Irons, "Hostages" - Michi Weglyn, "Tule Lake under Martial Law: A Study in Japanese Resistance" - Gary Y. Okihiro, and "Amache" - Valerie J. Matsumoto.
Murray does an admirable job of portraying to the reader popular interpretations and general historical facts regarding the internment. The topics range from the constitutional laws broken by the internment, to the transfer of Latin Americans of Japanese descent to the United States so that the U.S. could barter them for Allied POWs. The book presents popular views of the Americans interned and their reactions to internment, giving the reader a well-rounded look at the current debate over the subject. Each selection is unique and proves invaluable in regards to understanding the internment and its implications on modern society.
Each literary style is quite original therefore denoting that each style will need proper review. Murray writes in an average style, creating places where the sentence structure can be somewhat awkward. The author periodically goes back and forth between present and past tense, but does do a good job of conveying the topic at hand. The compositional style Daniels uses is quite assertive and conveys a more radical tone, he also seems to generally dislike lawyers - often bringing this dislike into his work, causing the reader general annoyance. However he provides proof to back up his statements and uses an otherwise gripping literary style that keeps the reader interested. Irons writes in a very professional tone, and presents the topics without extreme biases resulting in a well-written work. Weglyn presents a descriptive work, which at times appears to have a bit of anger behind it. Okihiro is slightly vindictive, often targeting other prominent authors and dismissing their work as incorrect. He presents a rather compelling work, but his single mindedness taints it. Matsumoto is very open minded, relating to the reader the wide spectrum of opinion instead of the lone mindset promoted by other authors. However, she sometimes overuses some of her sources, which slightly detracts from the work.
"What Did the Internment of Japanese Americans Mean? (Historians at Work)" makes for an excellent introduction to the various facets of internment, but is not a precise work on any individual realm of the subject. Murray's work is a necessary overview and resource for anyone, both seasoned experts and casual readers, interested in one of the darkest chapters of American history.

Book Description
In this highly interdisciplinary work, linguist Anna Wierzbicka casts new light on the words of Jesus by taking her well-known semantic theory of "universal human concepts"- concepts which are intuitively understandable and self-explanatory across languages-and bringing it to bear on Jesus' parables and the Sermon on the Mount. Her approach results in strikingly novel interpretations of the Gospels. Written in dialogue with other biblical commentators, What Did Jesus Mean? is both scholarly rigorous yet accessible.
Customer Reviews:
A more open book now.......2001-11-20
Anna Wierzbicka is the first person who has managed to make me see what Jesus really meant. Unlike most Bible commentators, Wierzbicka does not paraphrase what Jesus said. That is, she does not just replace Jesus' images by other new images, but in plain and simple words she makes explicit the meanings of those images, the presuppositions contained in what Jesus said, the implied negations and refutations, the implicatures, in one word: the deeper intentions of God's acting in and through Jesus. Her greatest merit is that she does not lead us, readers and believers, away from Jesus' words, but again and again takes us back to them with the fuller understanding enabled by her explications. Both for lay people and theologians her universal language, which is based on years of detailed research in many different languages and cultures, is the key to open the meaning of it all
This book makes me happy as a beliver and as a linguist........2001-08-08
Wierzbicka has relly succeede to make sence of linguistics with this book. She has been able to take away the layers that writers and translators have put on Jesus' words; the layers that have been influenced by time and culture. The book is good for everyone who want to know what Jesus really meant and for anybody who is interested in semantics and theology.
a linguist examines the meaning of jesus' words.......2001-07-14
Although this book is also concerned with linguistics, the meditation on Jesus' words is done with such evident spiritual care that the lay person looking for devotional reading will be amply rewarded. I read a lot of work on biblical criticism, and Wierzbicka is terrific on Jesus and women and on the originality of his admonition to turn the other cheek. Wierzbicka canvasses many of the arguments of biblical critics on all points and offers her own, reasoned assessment on the authenticity and meaning of the words.
Very difficult reading.......2001-06-21
It distresses me not to be able to write a rave review for this book. Linguistics and religious language are two of the subjects that I am most deeply interested in, and I'm well trained in both; the need for clarity in religious language is a cause that matters greatly to me. I greatly admire the work of Wierzbicka, who is a superb scholar. I should have loved this book. Unfortunately, I didn't. That doesn't mean that it's not a valuable and important book, with all the necessary scholarly bells and whistles. It's all those things; I'm glad I have it on my bookshelf. But it is so meticulously detailed, and makes the same points so endlessly many times, that it's extremely difficult to read. I wish it had been edited as rigorously as it was written.

Customer Reviews:
Fun!.......2007-02-23
This book was perfect for my 9 yo daughter. She has NLD and is often confused by language, facial expression, or hidden meanings. We had a lot of fun guessing the answers (she got them wrong every time!) and then reading the correct meaning. Within an hour she had picked a lyric out of a song and understood it for the first time ("coming out of my shell"). We are thrilled with this book!
Great idea -- but there are problems.......2005-10-15
This book helps a child with Aspergers unravel the mysteries of colloquial meatphors -- that is the great idea. However, it was written in the United Kingdom, which means that sometimes the explanations are confusing also (what is a queue, Mom???)-- that takes away from its effectiveness and makes for frustration. There are also a couple of publishing goofs -- wrong explanation on the page -- no excuse for that. I actually whited them out and moved the words over. Like I said -- great idea -- upbeat and useful -- but it should be noted that it is not US English.
This is the Book to Put NT Translators Out of Business.......2004-12-23
For people with autism/Asperger's, this book is the book to have in understanding colloquialisms, idioms and metaphors. Instead of relying on neurotypical (NT) counterparts to interpret and translate these phrases, just keep this book handy. It's the ideal tool to have when learning the language of the NT world.

Book Description
What did the Constitution mean to early Americans? Ostensibly the foundational document of a sovereign American people, the U.S. Constitution affected different kinds of Americans in very different ways. Modern historians have investigated its impact on various groups in an effort to determine what the Constitution meant to the founding generation of Americans. Exploring how early Americans shaped, responded to, and debated the document, this volume's 5 selections attempt to gauge the Constitution's ultimate success in forging a government based on the consent of the American people.

Customer Reviews:
I recommend this book to everybody........2002-06-18
I found this book very interesting. It answered alot of the questions I had, and the questions that are in this book are almost always asked to me by non-Christians.
I found this book especially helpful in talking about the trinity. It also helped me in understanding the difficult sayings in the Gospel of John.
I highly recommend it, and I was very surprised when it said it was out of print. It is a must needed book.
Denominational bias abounds.......2001-05-26
I found that this book was good at answering some standard questions but forced answers for truly difficult sayings of Jesus. Some of the answers given I felt were lacking and unclear. The author appeared to have a specific denominational mindset that closed off the answers that were quite simple from a different angle. The "difficult" in the title appeared to be relative based on a person's denominational preference and closed mindedness.
Better resources are available.......2000-12-16
Rhodes is quite prolific, and I appreciate his research and many works that he has published. This, unfortunately, is not his best. He attempts another version of a book he already wrote ("When Cultists Ask") and comes away with not much more than what he already had and what many others have done before him. He has taken some hard-to-interpret passages and exegetes them for a lay Christian audience. While he tries his best to give both viewpoints in a verse's interpretation, there is no doubt that his conclusion is tainted with his personal belief system. So, if you don't agree with him, I suppose that you will feel like he left your position on the short end and almost ignored. While there should be room for personal opinion, I guess I didn't feel he always adequately presents both cases. Can someone say straw man?
Rhodes attempted to differentiate his book from others on this subject (i.e. When Critics Ask or Hard Sayings of the Bible). Those other books tackled the tough passages in a chronological Bible order. Rhodes decided to cover the verses in subject order. This, I believe, makes What Did Jesus Mean? very difficult to navigate. However, I will say that I will keep the book on my shelf next to others like it, utilizing it when looking for another opinion on a controversial passage. This, by itself, makes it a book worthy of purchase.
Diffucult Saying of Jesus.......2000-03-22
As a Christian, I found Ron Rhodes' book very interesting and worth my time. One of two places he parapharazed the Bible scripture and I thought his "questions" to be misleading from the point he was making. Overall this book is beneficial for the serious minded Christian. We need more people writing these type books.
confusing.......1999-08-24
i am not a person who will sit with a bible in hand and look up all the referenced material.much of the reference material only leads to more questions. the bible scholars that make a study of the bible and disagree on the meaning of a certain passage leads me to believe i can make my own interpretation. i believe that i believe that if we were to study just the words of CHRIST and forget all the material that causes all the confusion that the study would be more understandable and would probably be of more interest to more people. a religous program asks that everybody read two chapters a day every day. unless you are true bible scholar you really do not know what you are reading and you are not getting what the gospel is all about.i wish i could have the opportunity to sit with the author i describe my feelings about the thousands of books on the bible and make suggestions as to a real revealing purpose of the bible. it sure is not the message that most religions and denominations are presenting

Book Description
The capable and forthright Lydia Merton, wife of the esteemed Noel Merton, chairs the local committee preparing for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. What follows is pure Angela Thirkell - squabbles, jealousies, and high jinks aplenty. As always, romance brews amidst the eccentricity.
Customer Reviews:
Not One of Thirkell's Best Efforts.......2000-04-03
Angela Thirkell's Barsetshire series includes some of my favorite and most often reread books, but this is not one of them. Many of the characters are ones who appeared in "Northbridge Rectory," and the situations in this book are often rehashes of situations from that book set several years later in time ("Northbridge Rectory" takes place during World War II, and this book takes place in 1953, when preparations are being made for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation). The committee scenes are copies of the working party scenes from the earlier book, and none of the characters seems to have changed in the least in 10 years. "Northbridge Rectory" is much more enjoyable. In my opinion, Angela Thirkell was at her best in the books written in the 1930s through about 1946. The later books just don't come up to that standard.
