4 out of 5 stars Review- Acrylics: The Watercolor Alternative.......2006-11-10

Generally, this book was all that I hoped it would be. It gave specific step-by-step instructions and clear illustrations of demos for the techniques the book presents. Great pictures too. I thought of a few questions related to this topic while reading the book, and have not found the answers for some, so... it is not as comprehensive as I wished. As a long time water colorist and acrylic painter, I was given the exercises and steps I need to continue on my own using acrylics like w/c but avoiding some of the w/c problems that inhibit some of my ideas. A measure of my approval of the book is that I am considering a workshop by the author, when I have the opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Acrylics: The Watercolor Alternative.......2006-03-15

Being a former teacher of art I have 4 favorite books and this has become one of them. I found Acrylics: The Watercolor Alternative to have the best demonstrations that illustrate technique. I use acrylics in my work and Harrington's versatile use of acrylics makes for a wide range of possibilities. He is an architect which is reflected in the dicipline of his work. I love the sketches and preliminary designs he prepares. This is very important for artists. I would highly recommend this book. Bino, March 2006 Ruston, Louisiana

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-02-08

I love this book. If you love the vibrancy of watercolors but not their 'fragility' this book offers a great alternative. I am an intermediate to advanced artist and find that this book is exactly what I was looking for. I especially like the section on riverbed rocks under water. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow and cover a nice range of subjects (landscapes, water, trees, buildings, flowers, etc.) There are plenty of step by step demos to get a feel for the technique. There is also a nice, but not overly long section on materials. His painting style is somewhat realistic, but not too much. After buying lots of books I have FINALLY found just what I was looking for. I took a chance on this one, since there weren't many reviews and I couldn't look inside the book, and I am very happy with it.

This is one of my all time favorite books. I wish I had a copy of it. It is about a tradional Japanese form of packaging different things, mostly food. The idea behind it is that when you present someone with a cake, say, and its nicely packaged they get the idea that you hope they enjoy the cake.
The five eggs of the title are sort of stacked up and bound with straw woven in an ingenious way. The photographs are lovely and the descriptions of the various packages are informative as well as evocotive. I once had the chance to see
How To Wrap Five Eggs at the Japan Society Library. Boy I wish I had that one too.

I got my hands on this book recently. Its a book which says most of the story through pictures. Its amazing to see how advanced Japanese ancient art is and how much we can learn about them.

Ellsworth "Ed" Sinclair does a fine job providing you with sleek, attractive designs for earrings, bracelets, pendants. The designs are not overly complex or heavy looking, like some wirewraps. The emphasis here is on less expensive, single and multi-bead projects as well as wire-only pieces. It is a good follow-up to Moods In Wire, Volume 1. Keep in mind that these pieces can be made in gold or silver wire, not just brass.

Book Description

In Japanese culture, it is customary to put as much care into the wrapping of a gift as into choosing the gift itself. The way a gift is wrapped and the material in which it is presented are considered expressions of the giver's feelings toward the recipient. Now, using techniques that have been part of Japanese tradition for generations, Chizuko Morita offers readers innovative and unique ideas for using the Japanese art of wrapping with cloth in very contemporary ways. In a matter of minutes, a swatch of cloth known as a furoshiki, can be fashioned into an elegant wrapping for a CD, a book, a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates, even a soccer ball. And unlike paper gift wrap, if you get it wrong the first time, just undo the knots and start again. Not only are the wraps fool-proof, they rely on only three basic knots. Beautifully illustrated with four-color photographs, engagingly written and with clear, step-by-step instructions, Gift Wrapping with Textiles includes sections on: The Enjoyment and Advantages of Wrapping with Textiles Selecting a Cloth Techniques Tying Attractive Knots The Three Basic Knots Pleating and Twisting Caring for Textiles Gift Wrapping Interior Wraps for the Home Table Settings History Traditional Japanese Furoshiki

Book Description

Much care and thought go into gift giving. And the way a gift is wrapped can say a lot about the care and thought that went into its selection. This easy-to-follow, idea-packed volume draws on traditional forms and techniques of Japanese wrapping to create unusual, attractive, and surprisingly
simple ways to wrap presents of all shapes and sizes.

The Japanese combine a love of ceremony with an equally strong fondness for giving and receiving presents. They have developed a sophisticated system employing many interesting and eye-pleasing ways to wrap all kinds of gifts. This tradition is evident in techniques such as layering several sheets
of paper to create a color contrast or subtle shading effect, wrapping part of the gift and leaving pan visible, using origami-like folds to decorate or add interest, and fashioning soft wrappings from large squares of colorfully patterned cloth called furoshiki.

The author draws on his extensive knowledge of this Japanese tradition and his experience in other forms of paper craft, including doll making, to create sixty-six imaginative gift wrappings.

All sixty-six ideas are shown in beautiful color plates and accompanied by step-by-step instructions that take you from the materials you need to the finishing touches. Let these exciting and creative wrappings add a new dimension to your gift giving.

There is something so beautiful and special about a thoughtfully wrapped gift. Forget those garish papers with bright colors that assault your senses. Learn to wrap things so that the wrapping itself is a gift. This book shows you exactly how to wrap your gift with the subtleness found in so many things Japanese. You don't even need boxes for most of the numerous wrapping techniques, and therein lies the beauty. Highly recommended, you won't ever want to part with this one.

I expected more ideas on how to wrap beautiful presents from this book, but was only moderately satisfied from its content. This is certainly one of the better books out there on amazon.com about beautiful gift wrapping. However, I have seen many more beautiful ideas on how to wrap gifts in Asia. If only there was a book that described and taught more ideas on gift-wrapping.

5 out of 5 stars This beautiful presentation oozes with artful tradition........2001-01-10

If you're searching for artistic and elegant ways of wrapping up gifts, you will fall in love with this book! Each idea is beautifully presented and diagrammed in detail. There are wrapping ideas from the artfully simple and spghisticated to the ultimately elegant and intricate...gift wrapping for the beginner paper folder to advanced challenges. They are all wonderful with that wonderful touch of Japanese artistic grace that make the outside of the gift as intriguing as the inside and can make the mundane look magnificent. Even when I'm not putting the ideas to use, I find I love to look through the book over and over.

In these days of PalmPilots, pagers, hastily typed e-mail messages, and cars equipped with fax machines, the art of hand-writing a letter has morphed into something rather quaint, if not downright Victorian. The folks at Kate's Paperie, a sumptuous, even decadent paper and writing-supply store with three Manhattan locations, seek to remedy this situation with Paperie: The Art of Writing and Wrapping with Paper. It's a reference for creative touches that no party planner, wedding coordinator, gracious businessperson, or love-letter writer ought to go without.

Paperie begins with an enthralling, lavishly illustrated tour through the histories of the written word; the art of papermaking (from China's first paper 2,000 years ago, through the Egyptian development of papyrus); to printmaking, including the background of the watermark, business card, social stationery, penny postcard, and letter-sealing wax; and developments of calligraphy, embossing, and engraving. This is a book that appeals to the Martha in all of us: the artful design and elegant prose, from the textured tangerine endpapers to step-by-step directions for artful gift-wrapping, will likely inspire you to excitedly order some custom-engraved Crane's stationery or marbelized Japanese sheets at the very least.

Etiquette enthusiasts will appreciate the explanations of the various stationery elements, from monarch notes to "at home" cards. The scores of full-color photos of Crane's stationery; vellum, origami, kraft, and tissue papers; raffia from Madagascar; and gorgeous silk ribbons (some of which are so wide that visitors to the store purchase by the yard to wear as scarves!) beg for creative projects and heartfelt letter-writing. The staff at Paperie honor the ceremonial aspects of paper, hint that other cultures could benefit from treating it as a sacred thing as Asians do, and suggest dozens of ways for turning an everyday memo, thank-you note, or gift into something truly artful and memorable. --Erica Jorgensen

Book Description

Paper is sensuous. Think of the love letters of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, Henri Matisse's Jazz cutouts, William Morris wallpaper, Samuel Pepys's journal....With its many textures, weights, weaves, colors, and designs, paper adds dimension to our lives. Paperie: The Art of Writing and Wrapping with Paper, written by Bo Niles in conjunction with Kate's Paperie, explores that dimension and widens our understanding of the role of paper throughout history and its importance in communicating with books, letters, cards, currency, wrapping paper, room decoration, and anything else you can imagine.

Paper is a gracious and hospitable medium; while it can easily be transformed through folding, cutting, printing, or tearing, it also has the power to transform through wrapping and decorating. Paperie documents our relationship with paper, describing its creation from wood fibers and cotton rags, the use of it in packaging and printing, and the way in which a simple sheet can inspire the imagination to artistic creativity. The first section of the book, "Transforming Paper," describes the ways in which societies have adapted paper to their uses throughout history, most notably through writing, printing, and the creation of stationery, envelopes, greeting cards, books, and journals. The second section, "Transformed by Paper," deals with the more artistic uses of paper and the ways in which it affects each surface to which it is applied, whether that surface is a box, lamp, wall, floor, kite, or banner. One of the most stylish ways paper can be used is in wrapping, and Paperie describes different folds and presentations, as well as how the Japanese tradition of gift-giving places more importance on the wrapping than the gift itself.

Like Holly Golightly's Tiffany's, Kate's Paperie has a remarkable atmosphere. Everything in the store is made from or used with paper, and the moment you enter you can tell something unique is happening there. It is a complete paper experience, from the corrugated cardboard walls all the way up to its paper accordion drop-ceiling -- rough sheets of multicolored papers line the walls, brightly designed handmade greeting cards await selection in circular carousels, handmade photo albums and journals lie in stacks, all begging to be caressed, fondled, and chosen for a special use. Paperie is the distillation of years of paper craft knowledge, creativity, and flair. It not only provides information on the best paper choices for each project, but it teaches new techniques for wrapping and decorating, and inspires the letter-writer, journal-keeper, and would-be artist in all of us.

3 out of 5 stars Eye Candy.......2005-08-01

This is a very beautiful picture book, but the text comes up a little short. There is a random assortment of different fonts and layouts, used for no apparent reason than to excite the author's artistic urges. The book touches on all the relevant topics (making paper, different types, history, regional differences, etc.) but doesn't really cover any one topic completely, even for an amateur. At the end, I believe that strength of this book is a smorgasbord of different papers presented for pure artistic enjoyment. The pictures are beautiful and some of the text is enlightening.

5 out of 5 stars The book is simply the bible on paper and it's beauty.......1999-06-26

Unlike other how to books, this book gives alot of history about paper from Asia to America. It also accounts how important paper is in our everyday lives. How simply beautiful paper can be to touch and view, even smell. The book also shows you how to use paper; esp. as stationery and gift wrapping. I think its a great book for people just learning about paper, It is also a great tool for people who already know the basics and need more... I am one of those people!

      Book Description

With vibrant, full-color photographs and detailed instructions, Japanese Flower Wrapping shows readers how the traditional Japanese arts of origami, ikebana and gift-wrapping can be combined to create beautiful and unusual floral arrangements. Making gifts of flowers has long been a Japanese custom. Traditionally, flowers were wrapped in folded washi (Japanese paper) and tied. This practice, known as hana tsutsumi, or flower wrapping, was passed from generation to generation, going back to the time of the samurai. Few modern Japanese people are aware of this ancient style of art and it has been in danger of being forgotten. Author Mitsuko Kawata hopes to recapture the art based on the traditional practice of flower wrapping, while, at the same time incorporating a modern sensibility. She guides readers through the steps of folding decorative papers and tying them with mizuhiki (tightly twisted, long, narrow sheets of washi to which liquid glue is applied) and kimihimo (braided ropes) to fashion breathtakingly beautiful containers and arrangements. In addition to her easy-to-follow instructions, Kawata includes a section on the tying styles of Mizihiki and Kumihimo, as well as a fascinating description of washi. This unique book contains examples of arrangements for a variety of occasions, from Valentine's Day to school graduation. Another section focuses on flowers from every season, shown in arrangements from the simple to the sophisticated. Japanese Flower Wrapping is a book with wide appeal: for practitioners of ikebana and origami it will bring a new dimension to their arts. And for anyone who is looking for innovative ways to present gifts with flair and distinction, the book is sure to be a source of inspiration.

If you lust after beautiful flower arrangements, but are shy of high-quality vases, this is the book to buy. Hey, even if you have a storage room filled with Eastern European cut crystal, you'll still want this book.

Huge photos show you how to wrap containers (think "milk carton") with paper, string, and/or yarn. Yes, this sounds trite and strained until you see the results for yourself. Using these truly easy and inexpensive techniques, your friends will beg to visit in order to see your arrangements. Further, if you started giving gifts of flowers presented in this manner, you'll turn acquaintances into friends, all of whom will adore you. Are you a professional florist? What you'll learn in this book will transform your career.

3 out of 5 stars Don't let the title fool you..........2007-07-01

This book focuses only on Christmas, with projects such as candy canes, Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, icicles and ornaments. It does put a nice spin on wire wrapping, extending it away from personal decoration and toward home decorations. I would have given it 3½ stars if I could because of the very different approach it takes.

The book offers the same convenience found in Sinclair's Moods in Wire : An Extended Guide to the Fine Art of Wirewrapping (2nd Ed) but with less variety and mostly simpler projects.

This book is not for everyone. It offers little eye candy. Color photos are limited to the front cover and section headings. Projects use line art to illustrate (helpful but not lovely). Don't get this as a primary wire wrapping resource.
