    Book Description

This is the first in a series of books in which one of the most influential of contemporary art theorists revised from within the conceptions underlying the history of art. The author’s basic idea is that the rigor of linear perspective cannot encompass all of visual experience and that it could be said to generate an oppositional factor with which it interacts dialectically: the cloud.

On a literal level, this could be represented by the absence of the sky, as in Brunelleschi’s legendary first experiments with panels using perspective. Or it could be the vaporous swathes that Correggio uses to mediate between the viewer on earth and the heavenly prospect in his frescoed domes at Parma. Insofar as the cloud is a semiotic operator, interacting with the linear order of perspective, it also becomes a dynamic agent facilitating the creation of new types of pictorial space. (Damisch puts the signifer cloud between slashes to indicate that he deals with clouds as signs instead of realistic elements.)

This way of looking at the history of painting is especially fruitful for the Renaissance and Baroque periods, but it is also valuable for looking at such junctures as the nineteenth century. For example, Damisch invokes Ruskin and Turner, who carry out both in theory and in practice a revision of the conditions of appearances of the cloud as a landscape feature. Even for the twentieth century, he has illuminating things to say about how his reading of cloud applies to the painters Leger and Batthus. In short, Damisch achieves a brilliant and systematic demonstration of a concept of semiotic interaction that touches some of the most crucial features of the Western art tradition.

    Book Description

The great popularity of fantasy and science fiction themes in films, books, graphic novels, and computer games has created a continuing demand for artists who can conceptualize and draw convincing space ships of tomorrow, as well as other fantasy vehicles such as cars, tanks, and sea-going vessels of the future. In this book, artist and designer Keith Thompson presents a practical course for art students. He starts with advice on finding research and reference materials, and then advises on using them as inspiration before sketching out original ideas for finished illustrations. The book's extensive main section presents a “mechanical workshop” of fantasy designs for students to copy and adapt to their own story needs and specifications. It gives attention to the techniques of drawing, shading, and coloring. The author analyzes each of the book's fantasy vehicles in terms of how and why artists came to their final design, how well the vehicles fit into the story being told, and how they would move, sound, and perform. Clear instruction is supplemented with more than 400 vivid, step-by-step color illustrations of sample projects.

5 out of 5 stars Great variety of vehicles!.......2007-08-23

I was surprized by the great variety of vehicles. From boxy to sleak to biomorphic vehicles. Easy to follow step by step directions. From starting with basic box and rectangulars shapes. Then editing these shapes, and adding to these shapes, to create a vehicle. This book is for learning to drawing on paper but I will be using it to draw on the computer. I'm a media designer, I will use the techniques that I have learned from this book for my 2D art. That I create with photoshop and painter as well as my 3D work. The book is also great for coming up with ideas for vehicles. Great book for beginners!

    3 out of 5 stars 50 fantasy vehicles.......2007-07-04

its an ok book..did have some unqiue ideas and ppictures of vehicles I would not have thought of..but I would use prob one, maybe two of the illustrated vehicles with my own modifications out of the whole book to put in a painting or drawing

    4 out of 5 stars A great "jumping-off point" for designing vehicles.......2007-06-21

When first saw the book sitting on the shelf I thought to myself "Is this another Lee J Ames Draw 50 books?" I opened it up, and I was surprised. The author begins with some reference on modern and historical vehicles, making them armored, military war machines. Also covered are steam-punk, future cars and motorcycles, one creature from myth, and animal-machine hybrids. The illustrations are very good, and the author break down the forms of the vehicles into three dimensional shapes, showing them from three or four angles.

5 out of 5 stars A nice perspective on modern pinup art.......2006-12-12

I have been practicing art, mainly pin-up art as only a past time for the last year or so. I have bought many books and gone through various methods. I really dig this book. In the introduction he mentions all of the past artists that should be researched and the importance and style of pin up art. He addresses throughout the accetuations that separates a pin up girl from a life portrait. He also tries to keep up with modern times with where 'sexy' art is.

His methodology was great, I wish there was more, but with his great examples you get plenty. He has some nice break downs, from pencil to paint, all the while pointing out key ingredients. He deffinitely has inspired some good art out of me already.

I give this five stars because it is extremely helpful in instructing you how to form your own dragon, but I was hoping for a bigger book to go along with the brushes, pencils, and paints. It's worth the purchase if you'll use everything in the kit, but the $19.99 book is the better purchase.

          Book Description

Aspiring cartoon artists, comic book collectors, and nostalgia buffs will discover a happy combination of cartoon history and practical instruction in this color-illustrated book. It teaches art students dozens of ways to simplify, exaggerate, and distort the people, animals, and objects in their illustrations to achieve hilarious effects. An overview of cartoon history showcases humorous characters as they appeared in nineteenth-century satire, in children's books, in cartoons of the 1920s, in Hollywood animation of the 1940s, and in today's manga and anime cartoons. The author shows how to create cartoons using a wide range of media, from pen and ink to paint and pixels. Art students will get tips on making their cartoons interesting with funny props and laughter-evoking backgrounds. Most important are the comic character types that they place in their illustrations' foregrounds. Here's how to create stock types—the idiot, the cutie-pie, the comic hero, the evil genius, the loyal sidekick, the straight man, and the heavy. Here, too, are imaginative ways to costume different characters, give them funny poses, and dramatize their emotions through facial expressions, such as fear, anger, boredom, amusement, or surprise. A final chapter advises beginning cartoonists on how to build a portfolio, present their work, create a web site, and find an agent and steady work. More than 300 illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars This book has it all.......2002-02-04

Divided into 4 sections each of which builds on the lessons that came before: B&W technique, color technique, elements of picture making and subjects & styles. It's large, heavy and will keep you working for months....
