A Frustrated Physics Student.......2006-02-19
I had trouble solving the problems in the text that accompanys this book. I bought this in hopes that it would help me figure out where I went wrong in the solutions of the problems of the book and was disapointed in that it lists very few solutions. I was expecting it to be like my Calculus solution manual which lists all of the odd problems. I do not like that it lists very few problems, but the ones it actually does list helps me understand the material better, they were very thorough and easy to read.
Product Description
This Student Solutions Manual, which provides complete solutions to all of the nearly 600 exercises in the accompanying textbook, will encourage students to work the exercises, enhancing their mastery of physical organic chemistry. When used properly by students to compare their solutions with the detailed solutions provided in the manual, it will serve as an excellent tool for sharpening skills and encouraging a deeper understanding of the concepts that are covered. Like the accompanying text by Anslyn and Dougherty, this manual also includes Going Deeper highlights on selected topics, where students can explore exceptions to the rule, discover surprising connections between topics, and gain insights into practical aspects of the material. Problem-solving strategies will be enhanced by students' coordinated use of the textbook and this manual.

Excellent book.......2007-10-09
This book is excellent. If you study Physical chemistry, you must have one. Most content in this book is quite new, that you can not find in other books.
I love it very much! Service in Amazon is very goog!
Slow shipping and handling.......2007-09-19
The book is in fine condition, I just had to wait longer than I have ever waited for a book in my life.
Excellent.......2007-01-04
The book arrived on time in a good shape as I hoped it to be. I'm very glad I choose to purchase book from the seller and I will highly recommend it.
Outstanding Text for Grad School.......2006-12-09
I completed my first semester of Physical Organic chemistry using this textbook and I am pleased beyond words. The book is very well written, yet sophisticated enough to help advance new graduate students like myself to the level that our Professors understand concepts at. The problems at the end of the chapter are very useful and the answer guide (sold seperately) explains them quite well.
The book is also binded very solidly. The other people in my research group keep this text on their lab bookshelfs for reference and I have no doubt that I will do the same.
The long wait is over..........2006-09-19
Phys. Org. Chem. has always been one of my favourite subjects. As I graduated from school and college into university for my master's, I began to realise that it represents not so much a separate topic as a philosophy and approach; to treat chemical and biological systems from the perspective of structure, conformation, and reactivity, which are after all the most fundamental aspects of any such system. I reached the conclusion that phys org chem is a truly interdisciplinary framework, and any one who has a solid background in it can be a good computational chemist, synthetic organic chemist, and/or bioorganic/biochemist.
Unfortunately, all the classic phys org books until now have been of the 'pure' kind, focusing on mechanism and reactivity, but not discussing the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, especially for biological systems. My wait is over; Modern Physical Organic Chemistry by Dennis Dougherty and Eric Anslyn has completely and satisfactorily reinvented the phys org chem textbook. Now, one can look to a wholesome treatment of phys org as a multidisciplinary, fundamental, and exciting approach to both chemistry and biology. The book is worth its price, and covers the gamut of topics, including basic ones like mechanisms and bonding, but also is interspersed with lots of boxes and discussions explaining the applications of basic phys org concepts to host guest systems, proteins and nucleic acids, strained molecules, and materials science. Fantastic reference. It should make you a well-rounded chemist, which is the need of the day in today's era of collaborative research.
Book Description
Modern Physics is the most up-to-date, accessible presentation of modern physics available. The book is intended to be used in a one-semester course covering modern physics for students who have already had basic physics and calculus courses. The balance of the book leans more toward ideas than toward experimental methods and practical applications because the beginning student is better served by a conceptual framework than by a mass of details. The sequence of topics follows a logical, rather than strictly historical, order. Relativity and quantum ideas are considered first to provide a framework for understanding the physics of atoms and nuclei. The theory of the atom is then developed, and followed by a discussion of the properties of aggregates of atoms, which includes a look at statistical mechanics. Finally atomic nuclei and elementary particles are examined.

Like most.......2007-02-12
The book is not very good with the equations in it. It needs to be more consistant with variable letter names. Some equations in the proofs cannot be used to answer end of chapter questions. This gets confusing.
Inconsistencies and Typos.......2002-01-17
...While understanding can come from this book, the numerous typos distract, confuse, and degrade the quality of it. Examples of this include the following: on page 7, the definitions for t_0 and t should be switched (although it's all relative); on pages 39, 40, and 41, there are occasions where a prime ' is either lacking or misplaced; on page 43, a variable dz' should be replaced by dx'. Page 137, example 4.5 (b) gives contradictory exponents. The correct exponents are ^2 throughout. The answer is also wrong! (should be 2.47x10^15 Hz)
These are just a few occasions that I have noticed and have spent hours struggling with.
Bad Explanations.......2001-02-01
I did not think that this book offered too good of explanations. After taking the course with this book accompanying it, I did not feel that I went away with anything except for more confusion toward physics. If you are thinking about purchasing this book, you will probably want to try a different text.
Good Introductory Book.......2000-07-18
It points out most of the important concepts clearly. It is an interesting book if you have proper foundation of Maths. However, I prefer the layout and format of its first edition. It achieved good balance between maths and physics.
Useless book alert!.......2000-05-30
Pick another book like Serway's, or Tipler's, or even Modern Atomic and Nuclear Physics, for a legitimate introduction to this subject. Beiser's lazy treatment of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and the Bohr atom amounts to little more than throwing out a few formulas and examples. The same goes for the transformations in special relativity - Tipler's treatment is superior. Even the Schaum's book in modern physics is better on this topic. His treatment of quantum mechanics was obviously meant to be ignored - hence the leaving out of important conceptual and explanatory material that, say, Modern Atomic and Nuclear Physics puts in. Overall, it is worthless in comparison to the previously mentioned books.

Somewhat frustrating.......2007-05-27
This book's explanation on materials can be arduous and a bit unnecessary -- I think the writers could instead provide concise, intuitive material to more effectively guide readers.
The examples/exercises should be revised for errors and more detailed documentation.
I would say this book is still readable -- bring it along when you're bored.
This book should be banned from bookstores world-wide!!.......2006-09-19
The information in the book is readable, but one doesn't learn the material just by reading it. The problem with this book is the homework problems (no pun intended). The book does not provide enough detail to help tackle some of the problems in the book. Often times, I would have to seek other resources (google, other books, etc.). As a matter of fact, most of the information in this book could be found and explained better on the internet, which is free by the way. For those who don't have a "death-grip" in mechanics, beware. You will be on your own with this book.
I believe that there are better books out there on Modern Physics. Please consider other Modern Physics text.
One of the better textbooks on modern physics.......2006-08-20
Classical physics has rules for how matter and energy behave on the normal scale of observation. Modern physics concerns itself with the behavior and rules of matter and energy on the very large or very small scales of observation. Modern physics is further subdivided into quantum physics and the theory of relativity. This is a pretty good book on these subjects, although it is far from perfect.
Quantization [Chapter 3] sets the stage for delving into the mysteries of the very small. Nuclear Atom [Chapter 4] discusses the "old" quantum theory of Bohr and its beautiful description of one-electron atoms. Wavelike Particles [Chapter 5] brings in an entirely unexpected way of thinking about our old friend the point mass: it can act like a wave under the right conditions! Elements of the Schrodinger Approach [Chapters 6 and 7] puts a particle into various kinds of "boxes". The goal is to understand the Hydrogen atom. Statistical Physics [Chapter 8] gives the quantum way of thinking about large assemblies of interacting particles.
Part 2 of the book explains the idea of molecular structure and spectra [Chapter 9] as an introduction to applications of Modern Physics. Next is the topic of Solid State [Chapter 10], which tells us about electrical and thermal characteristics of swarms of electrons and the effect of periodic lattices on them. Finally, the textbook touches on Nuclear Physics [Chapters 11 and 12], the study of the behavior of the atomic nucleus itself, and how that behavior can be exploited to liberate gigantic amounts of energy. The book concludes with Particle Physics [Chapter 13], which is also called "high energy physics", because many elementary particles do not occur under normal circumstances in nature, but can be created and detected during energetic collisions of other particles, as is done in particle accelerators.
Now in its 4th edition, this is not the most colorful text out there, but it more than makes up for that lack by its clarity and its breadth. I think it is truly the best Modern Physics textbook in print. The book has a companion website where each chapter has additional material, including sets of digressions into specific topics, beyond the paper text. There's another appendix, too, and in fact an entire extra chapter on the subject of Cosmology. I took away one star only because some of the derivations are somewhat lacking. I recommend this text to any student interested in this subject who has already had a year of general college physics and two semesters of calculus. The following is the table of contents:
PART 1. RELATIVITY AND QUANTUM MECHANICS: THE FOUNDATION OF MODERN PHYSICS
Chapter 1: RELATIVITY I
Chapter 2: RELATIVITY II
Chapter 3: QUANTIZATION OF CHARGE, LIGHT, AND ENERGY
Chapter 4: THE NUCLEAR ATOM
Chapter 5: THE WAVELIKE PROPERTIES OF PARTICLES
Chapter 6: THE SCHRODINGER EQUATION
Chapter 7: ATOMIC PHYSICS
Chapter 8: STATISTICAL PHYSICS
PART 2 APPLICATIONS
Chapter 9: MOLECULAR STRUCTURE AND SPECTRA
Chapter 10: SOLID STATE PHYSICS
Chapter 11: NUCLEAR PHYSICS
Chapter 12: NUCLEAR REACTIONS AND APPLICATIONS
Chapter 13: PARTICLE PHYSICS
As an aside, might I mention that the two impediments to understanding modern physics - visualization of concepts and also the mathematics involved - are treated quite well in two other relatively inexpensive books. For visualization of modern physics, try "Physlet Quantum Physics: An Interactive Introduction". For an excellent treatment of the mathematics of physics try "Mathematics of Classical and Quantum Physics". Both of these books are meant to be supplements, not course textbooks.
Just in time!.......2005-10-24
This book has helped me in my modern physics class. I bought it just two weeks before my first test and it arrived in just one. Thank you.
Good Book.......2005-09-15
I enjoyed using this book so far this semester, It is only every other odd and a very thin book. Some gaps in some of the explinations.

single girls guide to marry a man, his kids and his ex wife.......2007-10-01
This book gave situations that come up that can happen but not suggestions on how to deal with them. this book didnt do me much good.
Down to earth advice - too bad she copped out at end.......2007-09-06
I wasn't quite sure how to rate this book -- I enjoyed MOST of the book, but, boy, she slung a real doozy at the end, which left me with a bad taste in my mouth. First, the good stuff -- she relates with honesty, frankness, and much-needed humor, the struggles faced by stepmothers, using many examples and stories from her own life. I felt relieved, energized and heartened. I found myself taking myself less seriously and began seeing the big picture, and even laughing at some of my struggles (particularly with the ex-wife). She has a young, hip tone, which was refreshing after some of the "psych-speak" books I had previously read (although at times it seems she's trying a little too hard). BUT -- and this was a big "but" for me -- at the end she basically says the only way to be truly accepted is to have your own child with your new partner. Ugh. I felt like I had been sucker-punched. As a "childless" stepmom, I felt completely diminished, devalued and disrespected. I wanted to yell, "Sally -- not everyone chooses to or WANTS to have a child! Have a little respect!" I have to say that this last chapter and this declaration cheapened the book for me. It made her sound naive and judgmental, not to mention insensitive. I wondered how someone who seemed so "with it" for most of the book could be so "out of it" on this point. I'm just so tired of the "have children, it will solve everything and give you a purpose in life" thing. Too bad she resorted to this tired old answer, especially in this age of inclusion, and recognition of ALL types of families. And too bad her publisher didn't think twice about including it. I am rating the book 3 stars, hoping that she is just young and naive, and wouldn't have written that if she were 40.
Good for the girlfriend that is considering becoming a stepmother.......2007-09-04
I am a single gal who was looking for someone to tell me the issues that I might be inheriting if I take the next step with my boyfriend. This is an informative book of issues to be aware of and reads almost like a novel. I had picked up another stepmother book but it was way to dry and had too much homework that I was not prepared to concur just yet. This was an easy read.
This book was written for people that know they are going to marry a man, his kids and ex-wife or already have - not for people contemplating. It did lack such issues as - things to consider when moving in with each other, how to introduce kids into the relationship, etc. If you are still on the fence, you might consider another book that deals with dating issues and the step between dating and marrying.
Straight talk for new Stepmoms!.......2007-09-03
I am a new stepmom to a six year old girl. She's great, but sometimes, things bother me and I have a hard time putting them into words. This book is like reading my mind. It has helped me so much, and it also makes you realize that feelings you have sometimes are natural and ok...nothing to feel guilty about. All new stepmoms should read this book...even if your husband wasn't married before - if he just had children from a previous relationship, as mine did, a lot of the book will still apply to you as well.
Great book! Suprisingly Entertaining.......2007-08-02
This book really helped me to realize that I'm not the only person that does really stupid step-mom things and then regrets them. It's a great read if you're feeling like no one in the world can possibly understand what you're going through.

Comically Fun and Heart Warming.......2006-09-06
When Portia heard her mother's voice on her machine that fateful day she just knew the Miz Fallons were at it again. Portia returns to her home town of Truly, Georgia, not so much by choice but rather by trickery.
Upon her arrival her mom, aunt and grandmother immediately start in with their meddling. They set Portia up with what was meant to be a one night stand with a handsome British author but ends up turning into a summer long romance...well, sort of. Does playing hard to get count?
After being dumped by her long time boyfriend and then British novelist Ian Beckett wanting to "just be friends" Portia is convinced that it's the curse of the Miz Fallons and their penis Teflon that is causing all of her man troubles.
Family secrets begin to reveal themselves. Portia begins to unravel the truth about her father whom she hasn't seen since she was three years old. The real story behind who her grandfather really was surfaces and what, or rather who caused the split between her aunt and the love of her life. Portia is determined to fight the curse of the Miz Fallons and penis Teflon once and for all.
Lani Diane Rich's style of writing is sure to give her readers some southern comfort.
Engaging Book with Quirky Characters - Fun & Enjoyable.......2006-04-16
I have to admit I nearly didn't read this book - the title just seemed like more of so many others. I'm so glad I did, as I really enjoyed the book.
I found the story to be an easy, charming and fun read - with the type of characters you wish you knew or could meet. A story with a youthful central character, but with roots in a loving family of "barmy women" make it an engaging book.
The author thinks Jennifer Crusie really rocks - and I agree - and perhaps she'll be flattered to know her book inspired the same kind of upbeat happy feelings as I read HER book. Like Jennifer Crusie, her story is filled with friendships and family and interesting people with occasionally wacky behavior ... adults who may not always want to act grown up.
I'll be looking forward to reading her already published books and have put her on my "author list" to watch for new publications.
Hysterical romantic comedy.......2006-04-10
The four "Miz Fallons" have managed in three generations to never make it to the altar; in fact you might say they're purveyors of "penis teflon" when it comes to deflecting men. When the youngest Miz Fallon, perennial student Portia gets dumped by her live in lover Peter, her mother summons her home with rumors that her health is in decline. It is all part of her elaborate plan to help Portia forget her latest heartbreak by having a fling (or "fly") with the sexy British author Ian. Portia doesn't believe that any man has staying power, as all men have left her, including her father.
Ian is in town writing his latest book. Literary snob Portia literally snubs him when she finds out that he writes pulp fiction, as she plans to write her thesis on how Shakespeare stole plays from Christopher Marlowe. Their sparring about the subject is hysterical. While Portia is attracted to Ian and merely intends to get her groove on, she never plans to fall for him. And Ian has every intention of returning to England alone when he finishes the novel. This just adds more credence to the penis teflon theory, but maybe Ian can out that old theory to rest once and for all.
Author Rich has penned an engaging humorous story rich with humor, encouraging the reader to stick with the fickle Miz Fallons until the very end. She's an auto-purchase for me now.
A waste of time, less than one star.......2006-04-09
Although I'm a strong proponent of reading all kinds of books - good ones AND bad ones, man, I guess I'm not a fan of "chick lits". The four female characters seemed to be deranged in varying degrees, irresponble to the point of me wanting to slap each of them, and shamelessly needy and dependent on men emotionally. That such characters exist even in fiction is an embarrassment. Worst of all, the story is excruciatingly slow and boring. Every scene is predictable and worse yet, it leaves some frustrating questions unanswered. For instance, why does Mags do what she does? Because she's spoiled? Because she's crazy? This Mag's character's actions and personality especially annoyed me. What's worse, the author fails to convince me that I should sympathize with the character's psychotic behavior.
Another winner from Lani!.......2006-03-18
Lani Diane Rich has done it again! This is a great read, whether you like "chick lit" or not. It has plot twists, a strong female lead and a sexy Brit - what more could you want?
Highly recommended!!
