    Book Description

"Are there common phenomena and laws in the dynamic behavior of granular materials, traffic, and socio-economic systems?" The answers given at the international workshop "Traffic and Granular Flow '99" are presented in this volume. From a physical standpoint, all these systems can be treated as (self)-driven many-particle systems with strong fluctuations, showing multistability, phase transitions, non-linear waves, etc. The great interest in these systems is due to several unexpected new discoveries and their practical relevance for solving some fundamental problems of today's societies. This includes intelligent measures for traffic flow optimization and methods from "econophysics" for stabilizing (stock) markets.

      Book Description

Results of experimental research on aerodynamic and acoustic control of subsonic turbulent jets by acoustic excitation are presented. It was demonstrated that these control methods, originated by authors, not only can intensify mixing (by acoustic irradiation at low frequency), but also notably ease it (at high-frequency irradiation). This research monograph presents the updated results of the authors supplemented by other investigations conducted in USA, Germany and Great Britain. The methods for the numerical simulation of subsonic turbulent jets under acoustic excitation are described in detail, and examples are reviewed of practical applications, including reduction of turbojet engine noise and acoustic control of self-sustained oscillations in wind tunnels.

        Book Description

Microcontinuum field theories constitute an extension of classical field theories -- of elastic bodies, deformations, electromagnetism, and the like -- to microscopic spaces and short time scales. Material bodies are here viewed as collections of large numbers of deformable particles, much as each volume element of a fluid in statistical mechanics is viewed as consisting of a large number of small particles for which statistical laws are valid. Classical continuum theories are valid when the characteristic length associated with external forces or stimuli is much larger than any internal scale of the body under consideration. When the characteristic lengths are comparable, however, the response of the individual constituents becomes important, for example, in considering the fluid or elastic properties of blood, porous media, polymers, liquid crystals, slurries, and composite materials. This volume is concerned with the kinematics of microcontinua. It begins with a discussion of strain, stress tensors, balance laws, and constitutive equations, and then discusses applications of the fundamental ideas to the theory of elasticity.

          Book Description

This monograph presents new constructive design methods for boundary stabilization and boundary estimation for several classes of benchmark problems in flow control, with potential applications to turbulence control, weather forecasting, and plasma control. The basis of the approach used in the work is the recently developed continuous backstepping method for parabolic partial differential equations, expanding the applicability of boundary controllers for flow systems from low Reynolds numbers to high Reynolds number conditions.

Efforts in flow control over the last few years have led to a wide range of developments in many different directions, but most implementable developments thus far have been obtained using discretized versions of the plant models and finite-dimensional control techniques. In contrast, the design methods examined in this book are based on the “continuum” version of the backstepping approach, applied to the PDE model of the flow. The postponement of spatial discretization until the implementation stage offers a range of numerical and analytical advantages.

          Specific topics and features:

          * Introduction of control and state estimation designs for flows that include thermal convection and electric conductivity, namely, flows where instability may be driven by thermal gradients and external magnetic fields.

          * Application of a special "backstepping" approach where the boundary control design is combined with a particular Volterra transformation of the flow variables, which yields not only the stabilization of the flow, but also the explicit solvability of the closed-loop system.

          * Presentation of a result unprecedented in fluid dynamics and in the analysis of Navier–Stokes equations: closed-form expressions for the solutions of linearized Navier–Stokes equations under feedback.

          * Extension of the backstepping approach to eliminate one of the well-recognized root causes of transition to turbulence: the decoupling of the Orr–Sommerfeld and Squire systems.

Control of Turbulent and Magnetohydrodynamic Channel Flows is an excellent reference for a broad, interdisciplinary engineering and mathematics audience: control theorists, fluid mechanicists, mechanical engineers, aerospace engineers, chemical engineers, electrical engineers, applied mathematicians, as well as research and graduate students in the above areas. The book may also be used as a supplementary text for graduate courses on control of distributed-parameter systems and on flow control.

            Book Description

The volume is devoted to the Dynamics of Rods. It is a sequel to "Statics of Rods" by the same author. The main goal of the book is to present systematically theoretical fundamentals of the mechanics of rods as well as numerical methods used for practical purposes.

Linear and nonlinear equations governing a rod's oscillations are presented. Methods of determining eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in conservative and non-conservative problems are given, along with numerical methods dealing with forced, parametric, and random oscillations of rods. Some issues of interaction of rods with air (liquid) flows and the dynamics of space-curved rods containing flows of liquid are considered.

The book consists of nine chapters and appendices and may be conventionally divided into two parts. That is, the main theoretical material and the application of the theoretical results to problems of practical interest. Problems for self-study are found in Chapters 3, 5, and 7 and solutions are given in Appendix B.

                Book Description

This monograph on fluid mechanics is not only a superb and unique textbook but also an impressive piece of research. The author writes from the vantage point of a mathematical physicist: Having in mind the important applications and approximation techniques used in physics and engineering, he carefully analyses the power of the theory. He examines, among others, the theories of Leray, Ruelle and Takens, and discusses Lorenz's ideas of attractors. This is the only textbook that fully covers turbulence, all the way from the works of Kolmogorov to modern dynamics.

This 2nd corrected printing has been thoroughly revised with many changes to improve readability.

5 out of 5 stars Chick lit.... but better.......2006-08-10

OK. I'll admit it. I like chick lit. Some of it anyway. And this is one of them. I know chick lit gets a bad name, but read this book and you'll also see how it can be funny, intelligent and compelling. While I was reading the book, I couldn't put it down and now that I've finished it, I actually find myself missing the characters. All of the characters are written with such details that they seem real to me. I'm betting they will to you too. Check this chick out; I'm betting you won't be disappointed.

                    5 out of 5 stars A sweet story.......2006-07-09

Christina Bartolomeo is really an underrated author; all Anne Tyler fans should be reading her work. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Sophie, a sweet, rather passive artist who feels "snowed in" in Portland, Maine. She's from DC and Maine is a little too cold and remote for her, but her husband, Paul, doesn't seem to care. Paul is spending a suspicious amount of time with Natalie, a perky brunette from the office, and Sophie is left with time on her hands. She joins a walking club and gradually makes new connections in the wintry city.

This is a story that's meant to be lingered over and savored. It is somewhat slow-paced, but not in a bad way. You really feel like you know the characters, and Bartolomeo's sly little nuggets of insight are priceless.

                    Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Review by Tammy from Fallen Angel Reviews.......2006-05-02

Sophie Quinn has never been an assertive person. Now that her husband Paul has a new job, she is living in a new environment. As the days move on in her run down apartment, Paul speaks excessively about the great homemaker Natalie, and Sophie realizes she needs to start doing something different. Sophie joins a walking club and begins feeling like her life is spinning out of control. She thinks that her husband might be having an affair with Natalie, meets some new friends in her walking group, and starts learning how to stand up for herself without all the fear she had before.

While Sophie is sorting through her life, she starts a friendship with a cute and enjoyable guy in her walking group, Ned. In addition, she is back in contact with her first love, Rory, who wants to see her again. Can Sophie ever get her life on track and be happy again? Will she ever find the true love she deserves?

Snowed In is a smart and funny story of Sophie's life and the choices she makes in an effort to have a happy life. I enjoyed the warmth of the story, the detailed characters and the seemingly natural flow of new opportunities presented to Sophie and her friends. Christina Bartolomeo has done a fantastic job of creating a world that pulls you in. She has you under Sophie's spell before you realize what has happened. I give Snowed In 4 Angels and would recommend it to anyone looking for a comical and heart-warming story.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but dragged in parts.......2006-04-04

I bought this book because I loved Cupid & Diana by the same author. This book DRAGGED in the first 1/2, then picked up somewhat. It was just an OK read. Borrow it from the library or a friend. I wouldn't buy it.

                    3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable........2005-12-26

Sophie Quinn has been married to Paul for about a year. She has always lived in the D.C. area, but Paul's work transfers him to Portland, Maine, for a year. She can do her work anywhere. It is all via computer, so that is not a problem.

Sophie soon finds herself in a residence where the heat refuses to work, no vehicle to get around in, no friends close by, and Paul is seldom home. She joins a walking group just for a bit of exercise and some human company. This is where she meets Stephen and Ned.

Good thing Sophie now has some friends, because Paul's eyes are zooming in on a co-worker. Worse, Paul's holier-than-thou mother is coming to, once again, show Sophie how inferior she is.

*** I found this to be a good book, but nothing wonderful. It is realistic, but Sophie is just too shy and timid for me to believe. In the back of the book there is a page useful for Reading Groups.

The most impressive part, for me, is when the author mentions that the people who surf in the waters wear wetsuits for protection against the water's icy temperatures. Most people think that "beach" equals "warmth". Not in places such as Maine and Alaska. Very good addition. ***

                    Book Description

Every student of literature needs to understand how to use literary theory to analyze and interpret the text. In Literary Theories William Baker and Julian Wolfreys challenge the outdated notion that theory is something separable from the act of reading itself. Maintaining that the best way to learn is through practical application, the editors have assembled a volume of essays that plunges the student into the midst of a range of critical readings.

Each essay in the book explores a previously unpublished short story by Richard Jeffries, also included in the volume, from a different theoretical perspective, thereby presenting students with New Historicist, Marxist, feminist, structuralist, post- structuralist, psychoanalytic, and Derridean methods of analysis and interpretation.

Cogently argued and lucidly written, these essays offer the student reader an interactive introduction to the ways in which contemporary literary theories challenge us to rethink the acts of reading, writing, and interpretation.

If you want an introduction to literary theory that shows you how to DO it as well as just how other people do it, this is the one. Every single essay in the book is about the same short story, so there is not too much outside reading. And the story is even printed in the same book! (it's OK - just a little romance kind of thing.) I liked the one on feminism best, but they all explain things really well - made me feel better about theory.
