Perfect!.......2006-11-11
This book covers all the main topics that a mechanics course at the advance undergraduate or graduate level should have and more. It starts with a first chapter on Basic Principles where the authors do a general review about Newtonian mechanics, that is, Newton's laws, angular momentum, energy, conservation laws, center of mass motion, two body motion with a central potential and scattering. Then follows a chapter on Accelerated Coordinate Systems where you encounter things like the Corioly acceleration and centrifugal forces. Chapter three is a delight, it is about Lagrangian Dynamics where you learn a much powerfull formalism than newton's equations to solve problems using the Lagrangian function, learning about virtual displacements and generalized coordinates (also D'Alambert and Hamilton's principle). Chapter four is about Small Oscillations, it is very important since here you learn to work with many-particle systems that are use a lot in condense matter physics, the very well known normal coordinates are here introduced. Chapter five is about Rigid Bodies, chapter six is about Hamiltonian Dynamics, this chapter connects very well with chapter three illustrating yet another method to solve mechanics problems by defining canonically momentas for every generalized coordinates and then finding a set of first orders differential equations involving the hamiltonian (as opposed to chapter three where either D'Alambert or Hamilton principle lead to a system of second order differential equations) The hamiltonian is defined as a Legendre transformation of the Lagrangian function, also the Poisson brackets are introduced here and it is even explained how to do the transition between classical and quantum mechanics and also canonical transformations are introduced. This first six chapters make purchasing this book worthwhile but as if this weren't enough there are still another seven chapters more! I will just write their names: 7-Strings, 8-Membranes, 9-Sound waves in fluids, 10-Surface waves on fluids, 11- Heat Conduction, 12-Viscous Fluids and 13-Elastic continua. It also brings 5 appendices. This book is very well written and I always come back to it when I have to remember some mechanics formula or issue to re-study, I say that this book and Goldstein are the best books you can get on classical mechanics.
Book Description
In their prior Dover book, Theoretical Mechanics of Particles and Continua, the authors provided a self-contained account of classical mechanics. This supplement and update offers a bridge to contemporary mechanics. The original book's focus on continuum mechanics forms the basis for this discussion of nonlinear continuous systems. 2006 edition.

3.5 Stars -- Good Supplementary Material.......2001-05-24
I'm currently taking Professor Fetter's undergraduate mechanics course at Stanford, for which Marion & Thornton's Classical Dynamics is the required text. Professor Fetter provides references to relevant sections in his and other texts as supplementary reading to Marion & Thornton. Of all the others (including Goldstein), his provides the most lucid, complete discussion of several key topics in dynamics:
1. Small Oscillations (coupled oscillators, normal coordinates, eigenvalue problems)
2. Continuous Media (passage from loaded string to continuum limit) 3. Strings/Wave Propagation (e.g. d'Alembert, Bernoulli)
These are the sections I found useful. Others were not. I recommend this book as useful auxiliary material to standard texts like M&T. The level is slightly above M&T, but I found the use of matrix notation (vs. ungodly summations) very helpful. And Professor Fetter is a great teacher!

Useful only for its continuum mechanics coverage.......1999-12-03
The first half of this text covers the standard graduate mechanics cirriculum, while the second half covers strings, membranes, and other continuum topics. The section on particle mechanics is poorly done: the entire section on Hamilton's method is bad, and the treatment of the Hamilton-Jacobi method is disastrous (of all the topics to mess up!). The discussions offer no insight into the material being presented; both the small oscillations chapter and the Hamilton mechanics chapter are simply collections of formulae. I also disagree with their approach to Lagrangian dynamics. They, like Goldstein, begin with a tedious discussion of virtual work and D'Alembert's principle. I prefer Landau's approach- just introduce the action and get on with it. I don't believe that anything is learned from their method.
Much of the book reads as if the authors are just piecing together the relevant sections from other texts, while removing the copied authors' insights. Indeed, they're caught red-handed in chapter 1. Not only are problems 1.17, 1.18 directly from Landau's text, the wording is identical, the problems are divided into the same parts, and just as problem 1.18 directly follows 1.17 in this text, it directly follows the same problem in Landau's book.
This book really doesn't do anything in partcle mechanics well. It's examples are trivial (a common problem), and modern methods (see V.I. Arnold's book and a dynamical systems text) are omitted. There's no reason to use this for particle mechanics when Landau's beautiful text is available. And although I've never used it, I'd wager that Landau's continuum mechanics book is better than this text's coverage...
Excellent introductory Graduate text in classical mechanics.......1998-05-16
In the same spirt as Herbert Goldstein's "Classical Mechanics" (second edition), Fetter and Walecka covers the basics of graduate classical mechanics, while extending the treatment of the material into its quantum counterparts. The problems and examples, while not as difficult as Goldstein's, are appropriate for a 1st year graduate class.
Of exceptional note is the chapter entitled "Strings" which extends the treament of most of classical mechanics into the quantum regime. This section also gives the student an excellent first introduction to the variational and perturbation methods for finding exact and approximate solutions.
Book Description
Abby Morland's been making mischief since she was not-so-sweet sixteen, when she spied gorgeous Guy from the neighborhood being attacked by curvaceous Cara, the "Topless Piranha." It was a racy, tasty, spicy piece of gossip Abby couldn't resist passing along. But years later, her indiscretion may be coming back to haunt her -- since she now wouldn't mind a little nibble of Guy herself. With four cousins, two weddings, and a re-emergent piranha in the offing, the recipe for making more mischief is at hand, and it might just turn Guy in Abby's direction at last!

Great fun read in the sun.......2006-03-23
Brought this one on vacation with me. I really like EY's books. They are what many call "British Chick Lit" and live up to the name. This story is full of 2 people who can't seem to catch a break. Not only that but they are so worried about offending someone or another they give up their happiness for it.
I also enjoy the differences in the US and European culture. When we think about taking a holiday it is usually for only a week and while many go to Florida or possibly Jamaica, Bahamas or Bermuda we don't run off to places like Greece, New Zealand or Barbados quite as quickly.
This is a thoroughly enticing story that spans more than 15 years. It starts with a chapter about the summer that Rachel and Abby were 16 then jumps years into the future at the start of the 30's. Basically Rachel likes Guy, who the piranha in lip gloss Cara takes away, then Fleur (Abby's cousin) is with guy and Abby finds herself attracted, but then Cara is back and everyone tries to make sure that she doesn't get Guy again, not giving Guy any credit. When that dies will Abby finally get her shot at Guy? Read to find out.
Cute and rocky romantic comedy.......2006-03-21
On a weekend retreat with her cousins, Abby witnesses hunky Guy in a moment of passion with sleazy neighbor Cara they nickname the "Flytrap." The only one she told about it was cousin Fleur. Fast forward 15 years and Guy returns to the fold when he is invited to a party and he and Fleur start dating. Knowing his background with Cara, who seems to be interested again, Fleur asks Abby to keep an eye on Guy when she is not able to make it to a party, since Guy denies every being in a relationship with the tramp.
But Abby is finding she is interested in Guy, and is not sure she wants the babysitting role. Add to that the fact that Cara knows they are on to her. When they are all called together for her brothers wedding, she is stuck with babysitting duty of her young brother. Her aunt (and Fleur's mom) is still smarting from losing her boyfriend (and Abby's dad) to Abby's mother, despite the divorce, and smart cookie that she is, thinks that Abby is after Guy.
When Guy can take Fleur's suspicions and lack of trust no longer, he dumps her. He finds out that Abby played a key role on spying on him, and finds it hard to forgive, especially since she appears to have spread rumors about him. Several months later, he is the date of another cousin at a wedding in Barbados, and once again she is stuck watching her brat of a brother while mum is on holiday. Will she ever be able to reveal to Guy how important he is to her?
Young has produced another heartwarming and very British tale of a young couple's unlikely and very rocky road to romance.
as always..........2005-11-16
I've read all of Elizabeth Young's books and was anxiously awaiting this one's release. As always, a really good read. Can't wait for the next one.
Great Fun!!! .......2005-10-17
I really enjoyed Making mischief and couldn't put it down until I was done with it.
Liz Young brings to life funny and interesting characters, with a good plot.
Good laughs, with a romantic touch.
Totally recommend it!!! just as her other novels...

The Divine Circle Of Ladies Making Mischief.......2007-03-09
I loved this book , as I have all of this authors work. So much fun and suspense wraped together, impossible to put down. Makes you wish for a "bit" of magic in yourself.
Wonderful read.......2007-02-07
I love this series and I never get tired of the different people. I would recommend this series to mystery fans.
Another great read!!!.......2006-09-15
The third in a series, this book continues to let us peek in on the circle of five. This series of books is definitely a light, enjoyable read. They're not overly violent, but do keep you engaged in the story line. The Wiccan and herbal info is woven into these books in a way that won't "offend" non-pagans. As a pagan, it's nice to have good fiction that accurately describes modern Wicca (not spewing the TV/movie wicca disinfo). I'm hoping for many more in this series. And perhaps another series from this author that is accurate in pagan beliefs.
A very different type of 'chick lit' (to be kind)..........2006-07-09
I did NOT like this book.
First of all, there was the fact that the author had a tendency to overuse words ("clairvoyance"), use unnecessary terminology ("olfactory equipment" for nose,) and create an overly pedantic dialogue between characters that was consequently off-putting. I really believe that the author consulted a thesaurus frequently while writing. Unfortunately, it didn't work.
Secondly, the story-line was completely unengaging. The characters each had likeable qualities, but the plot was completely one-dimensional. I don't normally read about "murder mystery" plots in chick-literature, and now I understand why. It was horrendous and predictable.
Finally, who is the target demographic for this novel? The characters are 40-plus, but the cover and the description on the back of the book seem to be suggesting a much younger audience. While the plot was on an eighth grade level, the narrative and dialogue tried to be on a college level.
I would not recommend this book to anyone at any age. It was very disappointing.
Fun, light read.......2006-06-28
A quintet of upper-class middle-aged women use Wiccan magic and old-fashioned chutzpah to solve mysteries in this light, fun read.
I really enjoyed the mystery plot. Our intrepid heroines' dilemma makes total sense--they know what's going on, but they have no proof beyond their mystical powers, therefore no evidence to take to the police. What's a witch to do? Solve the crime herself, of course.
Along the way there's a lot of cute dog interaction (the POV character has a dog, and an ability to understand Scruffy's thoughts; Scruffy is a very true-to-life dog and so cute), and beautiful description of the women's Wiccan rituals. You can just see the candles flickering, smell the salt air, taste the food.
One minor quibble: The characters have a tendency to speak in sermons and adages rather than in normal dialogue. I don't know anyone who, even in the company of their pagan circle, talks quite this much about "harm none," the threefold law, the proper diet for dogs, "thoughts are things," etc.

Day 1: "When tourists ask you to take their photo, make sure you don't get their heads in the shot. They'll soon stop troubling the locals."
Day 23: "Many people love their crossword puzzles. That is why you should take every opportunity to fill in several clues incorrectly. In ink."
Spite is right! Justin Rosenholtz has come up with one dastardly deed for every day of the year. She wants to help indulge our "inner villain" with a series of imaginative and cunning deeds. Take the time to redress the balance in the world: spread some needless meanness!
Customer Reviews:
I'll pass on this one........2007-09-19
Justin Rasenholtz worries me. He's sure not going to be invited to my house for dinner, so that he can make a scene about rewashing the silver, or loudly speculate about my age when the birthday cake is served.
What worries me most about Justin Rosenholtz is his suggestion to call your best friend and tell him that you just got a million dollar book deal, found love and happiness in every imaginable way. "Really," he states, "nothing could be meaner than that."
Really, I do have a sense of humor, but ..... ewwwwwwww, yuck. This stuff is just nasty. But, I suppose that was the entire idea. NOT for me. I strongly suggest passing on this one.
By the way, I would give it only one star, but I just didn't want to be that mean.

Britain's Greatest Exploitation Film Director!
"I deliberately rub people up the wrong way", Pete Walker once remarked, "I want them to come into the cinema and be shocked." And shock them he did. No other British film-maker achieved the level of transgression that Walker regularly delivered to cinema-goers in the 1970s.
Beginning his career by making 'skinflicks', Walker went on to direct a trio of bona fide horror film classics. House of Whipcord, Frightmare and House of Mortal Sin probe beneath the glossy surface of the permissive society to expose a malevolent underworld of madness, obsession and vindictive violence.
Making Mischief is the first major critical study of the controversial director, and it has received the full cooperation of Pete Walker and his screenwriters. Extracts from a five hour interview with Walker appear throughout the book which also contains a wealth of previously unpublished photographs and, for the first time, reveals details of the Sex Pistols movie A Star Is Dead, which Walker was about to direct when the Pistols split.
Customer Reviews:
Accessbile Study of Underrated Director.......2007-03-11
The much need regeneration of British horror continues with this well timed and needed study of a figure who looms large in British horror history. Largely overlooked and in some cases forgotten Pete Walker made an excellent trilogy of contemporary socially orientated horror films in the early 1970's. The films were his masterpiece "Frightmare", "House of Whipcord" and "House of Mortal Sin". Each film allegorised aspects of society, which in Walker's bleak world view are inherently corrupt, suppurating with violence, perversity and insanity. The family, psychology, the judicial system and religion respectively crumble under Walker's imperious and apocalyptic gaze. Walker articulated most effectively a Britain on the verge of implosion and self destruction, a dark, grimy and morally irredeemable world. What is notable in this trilogy is the maintenance of a gritty, naturalistic visual style which combines effectively with Walker's social critique. As a result academic Steve Chibnall argues in this text for Walker's status as an auteur. Walker, however was very concerned with the commercial properties of his films and would probably be quietly amused by the cultural ascension Chibnall proposes. Sadly outside of Walker's key trilogy, there is little to support the claims for authorship. Chibnall is always up against it in his argument because of Walker's close ties to exploitation cinema. Simply put outside of his excellent trilogy Walker made fairly lacklustre and ultimately forgettable films, examples include "The Comeback", "Man of Violence" and "House of the Long Shadows", perhaps only "The Flesh and Blood Show" is worthy of reappraisal and further study. Nevertheless Chibnall must be commended for taking this difficult task on, and he should be further commended for an entertaining prose style, that doesn't take the book beyond fans and into the stuffy netherworld of academia.
