Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Medical Physics Bible!.......2006-02-08

I find this an absolutely fantastic book. It really is the bible of medical physics for radiotherapy. I had the second edition until it fell apart, and just purchased this new third edition. It explains virtually every single thing you need to know in therapy- from a theoretical point of view.

It does have two weak points: not all terms are clearly defined each time they are used in equations, and the prostate seed implant chapter has been largely overtaken by technological advancements in in-theatre planning which make it a little outdated.

If you are medical physicsist in radiotherapy and will only buy one book in your lifetime, then let this one be it!

2 out of 5 stars Much better books available.......2006-01-12

When I started working in Radiation Therapy, somebody recommended this book to me to learn the theoretical aspects. I am also required to teach a resident lecture out of this book. The more I use it, the less I like it. While the book may contain information on all basic and necessary topics, the way they are presented is less than optimal.

I find the writing style is not conducive to learning. The author has the annoying habit to insert sentences hinting at advanced topics without really explaining what it means. For the reader not familiar with the advanced topics, those remarks just create confusion. Some of the chapters, especially on electrons, are very unorganized and jump back and forth.

Compared to other excellent works available, e.g. Hendee and Ibbott, or Jayaraman and Lanzl, this book is much weaker in quality/price.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about linacs but..........2001-12-13

This book is a comprehensive introduction to the principles and technology of linear accelerators (linacs) used in radiation therapy.
Following a brief overview of the components of a typical linac, each subsequent chapter deals in detail with one component or part of the process of generating clinically useful photon and electron beams.
Chapters cover electron acceleration processes, production and transport of electron beams, beam shaping and steering, and generation and control of microwave power sources. Topics such as commissioning, radiation protection and maintenance are also described in full. The use of the linac is also put into context by inclusion of chapters on the treatment simulation process and treatment verification. Specialised and developing technology of interest such as dynamic collimation and electronic portal imaging are also described.
The book is written with the graduate physicist and medical physicist in mind. However, its presentation style is non-mathematical, so associated workers in radiation oncology such as radiotherapists and oncologists should not be daunted by this book. It is well written with helpful figures throughout. It offers good value for money, particularly being available in softcover. The authors are well known and respected physicists in the UK medical physics community.
The book, it should be stressed, is an introductory text and so some topics, such as multi-leaf collimation and electronic portal imaging, receive perhaps a slightly more brief mention than some might wish. The book also suffers a little from a lack of coverage of state-of-the-art techniques, such as dynamic multi-leaf collimation for intensity modulated radiotherapy.
This is one of only a handful of such texts on this topic. Overall, it represents a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the physics and engineering of linear accelerators and is recommended for the bookshelf of anyone involved in the technical aspects of radiation therapy with linacs.

              Book Description

Most kid write stories. A few of them grow up to be successful authors. Before Stephen King created Carrie, he created Jhonathan, at age nine. And before there was Rabbit Angstrom, there was Manuel Citarro, detective in John Updike's hard-boiled mystery, written at fourteen. Before Jurassic Park, there was young Michael Crichton's story about the mysteriously wounded man lying unattended in the street.

Editor Paul Mandelbaum persuaded our most popular American authors to share their childhood writings and their treasured photographs. What he's gathered is a fascinating, delightful collection of writing and early snapshots that reveal young minds at work, wrestling with early versions of ideas that were to take hold of their writings in later years. Of course, the young Madeline L'Engle would wonder about space and the meaning of eternity. Of course, Margaret Atwood would question conventional female behavior, arguing for the right to smoke cigars.

First Words is an inspiration to budding writers and enthusiastic teachers, and a revelation for readers everywhere.

This revised and condensed edition includes the following writers:

              Margaret Atwood

Young Stephen King, Michael Crichton, Rita Dove, Maxine Hong Kingston and the other authors demonstrate precocity, maturity, and a firm grasp of story structure and plot development.

Marginal notes can be intrusive, but I found myself looking forward to editor Paul Mandelbaum's illuminating comments about each writer's life and work. The information deepened my understanding of the writer's body of work. This is a wonderful book to own and a great gift idea.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful and valuable work.......2000-09-29

We all need to walk before we can run -- and in "First Words," some of the world's greatest literary sprinters take their first fumbling steps. They stretch their muscles, get their balance, totter and then take off -- and what strides they finally make!

Rounding up these first words, Editor Paul Mandelbaum has performed an invaluable and remarkable feat of literary excavation. Who knew this stuff even existed? For anyone who loves to read, or loves to write, "First Words" is revealing, inspiring and - believe it or not - just plain fun.

              5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2000-08-05

I found this book to be a fascinating voyage into the early minds of great writers. It was amazing to see little bits of genious and partially formed brilliance mingled with the half-baked ideas of the novice. If you are are a fan of any of these authors you will delight in this trip back to their first baby steps towards greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for teachers or aspiring writers!.......2000-03-18

FIRST WORDS was an expected find which has become a favorite gift. It allows the reader to turn back time and see the beginnings of a future writer. For aspiring writers it is both an education and an inspiration to see early stages of becoming a writer. For teachers it is an invaluable tool. 1-It demonstrates to the compulsively driven perfectionists in our classrooms that even those now famous had their own grammar, spelling, and revision demons to conquer. 2-It provides a cautionary tale, that none of us wants to be the teacher whose careless, quick negatives took years for a young writer to overcome. 3-It reminds us that lurking in classrooms all around this country are young children and young adults who will become the leading authors of tomorrow. It challenges us to do our best to help them along that path. I have giiven this to 12 other people so far, and many of them have gone on to buy it as gifts for colleagues, students, and friends. The idea is genius in its simplicity. The contributors and editors have made its reality a delight!
