Book Description
Aimed at graduate physics and chemistry students, this is the first comprehensive monograph covering the concept of the geometric phase in quantum physics from its mathematical foundations to its physical applications and experimental manifestations. It contains all the premises of the adiabatic Berry phase as well as the exact Anandan-Aharonov phase. It discusses quantum systems in a classical time-independent environment (time dependent Hamiltonians) and quantum systems in a changing environment (gauge theory of molecular physics). The mathematical methods used are a combination of differential geometry and the theory of linear operators in Hilbert Space. As a result, the monograph demonstrates how non-trivial gauge theories naturally arise and how the consequences can be experimentally observed. Readers benefit by gaining a deep understanding of the long-ignored gauge theoretic effects of quantum mechanics and how to measure them.

The Quantum
Hall Effect
Book Description
This well-established monograph, updated and now in its ninth edition, deals mainly with electron transport in, and optical properties of semiconductors. It includes lasers, e.g. the quantum cascade laser, quantum processes such as the quantum Hall effect, quantum dots, fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, molecular electronics, the nitrides, and many other recent discoveries in the field. New diagrams and tables provide a comprehensive source of materials data. Selected problems help readers to consolidate their knowledge and invite teachers to use this text for graduate courses on semiconductor physics, solid state physics, and physical electronics.
Customer Reviews:
Useful for experimentalists.......2003-12-31
As a graduate student in semiconductor physics, this was one of my favourite texts. A good sophisticated explanation of its subject, that went beyond an introductory text in solid state physics, like Kittel's book or that by Ashcroft and Mermin.
It strikes a nice balance between a purely theoretical book on condensed matter and an empirical-tending experimentalist text. The theoretical explanations presented here will be readily understandable to experimentalists, without having to wade through reams of renormalisation theory.
Perhaps the biggest inadequacy, to some, is the treatment, or lack thereof, of high temperature superconductors. Ah well, that subject is important enough that you probably should get texts devoted exclusively to it.
Interested in transport theory?.......2001-10-24
If you are interested in semi-classical charge and energy transport theory in semiconductors, Seeger is still the best book to learn from. For experimentalists, this book is a boon since many formulaes are given in "reduced" forms - just plug in material constants and get a numerical value.

The Physics of Low-dimensional Semiconductors: An Introduction
ASIN: 0127426809 |
Book Description
In its original form, this widely acclaimed primer on the fundamentals of quantized semiconductor structures was published as an introductory chapter in Raymond Dingle's edited volume (24) of
Semiconductors and Semimetals. Having already been praised by reviewers for its excellent coverage, this material is now available in an updated and expanded "student edition." This work promises to become a standard reference in the field. It covers the basics of electronic states as well as the fundamentals of optical interactions and quantum transport in two-dimensional quantized systems. This revised student edition also includes entirely new sections discussing applications and one-dimensional and zero-dimensional systems.
Key Features
* Available for the first time in a new, expanded version
* Provides a concise introduction to the fundamentals and fascinating applications of quantized semiconductor structures

Book Description
The book contains the worked out lecture notes of the courses delivered at the summer school in Les Houches. They address graduate students and are of interest for researchers as well. The book can be used as an introduction into three closely related fields: anyons and fractional statistics, fractional quantum Hall effect and knot theory. The theoretical papers are occasionally completed by reports on experimental techniques, and besides of physics some application to biological systems can be found.

Book Description
Mesoscopic physics has made great strides in the last few years. It is an area of research that is attractive to many graduate students of theoretical condensed matter physics. The techniques that are needed to understand it go beyond the conventional perturbative approaches that still form the bulk of the graduate lectures that are given to students. Even when the non-perturbative techniques are presented, they often are presented within an abstract context. It is important to have lectures given by experts in the field, which present both theory and experiment in an illuminating and inspiring way, so that the impact of new methodology on novel physics is clear. It is an apt time to have such a volume since the field has reached a level of maturity. The pedagogical nature of the articles and the variety of topics makes it an important resource for newcomers to the field. The topics range from the newly emerging area of quantum computers and quantum information using Josephson junctions to the formal mathematical methods of conformal field theory which are applied to the understanding of Luttinger liquids. Electrons which interact strongly can give rise to non-trivial ground states such as superconductivity, quantum Hall states and magnetism. Both their theory and application are discussed in a pedagogical way for quantum information in mesoscopic superconducting devices, skyrmions and magnetism in two dimensional electron gases, transport in quantum wires, metal-insulator transitions and spin electronics.

Book Description
This topical volume contains five pedagogically written articles on the interplay between field theory and condensed matter physics. The main emphasis is on the topological aspects, and especially quantum Hall fluids, and superconductivity is treated extensively. Other topics are conformal invariance and path integrals. The articles are carefully edited so that the book could ideally serve as a text for special graduate courses.

Book Description
P.G. Wodehouse often said that he wished he'd spent more time playing golf and less "fooling about writing stories and things." Happily, the prolific and beloved satirist often took his pen to the green. Here, Wodehouse expert D.R. Bensen has collected a dozen pieces to delight golfers and those who know them -- even those who have never basked in the ecstasy of a perfect putt.
Customer Reviews:
Best of the Green.......2005-02-06
If you wanted to read all of Wodehouse's golf stories at once, you'd want the Golf Omnibus. If you'd rather not lug around a phone book-sized volume, however, you may prefer this moveable feast of a dozen prime Plum stories (a baker's dozen if you count the preface by D.R. Benson), the best of Wodehouse on the links. Unlike the pocket paperbacks of some Wodehouse editions, with print so small you nearly need a magnifying lens, this oversized "quality" paperback nearly qualifies as a "large print edition." So it's really the best of both worlds, requiring neither a microscope nor a forklift for enjoyment.
Reading Plum on golf, however, is like playing a familiar course; the same stories are scattered throughout various editions. All of these stories have appeared elsewhere. Fore! opens with a very funny story that is quite unlike most of his golf tales, "The Coming of Gowf," which originally appeared in Golf Without Tears (1924), as did four other stories. That's the American title of a book that appeared in Britain as The Clicking of Cuthbert (1922). Five stories appeared in the American collection, Divots (1927), published in England as The Heart of a Goof (1926). The final tales are from Nothing Serious (1950/1951), published in both British and American editions. For golfers with a literary bent, here's the best imaginable introduction to P.G. Wodehouse, and old Wodehouse fans will be happy to walk around the course again.
Ha Ha!.......2000-03-27
Typical Wodehouse humor. I've always enjoyed his light humor and concise writing style, and this book is no exception. A throughly enjoyable read!
Golf stories on life!.......2000-03-27
Plum has brought the passion for golf alive with unusual style and aplomb in this one. All the stories viewed through the eyes of the "Oldest Member" take on vivid color, and their solutions lie, no doubt, on the greens! Right from a novice taking up golf, to a professional golfer they all have their solutions to the toughest problems in life only on the golf course. Viva le golf! And Viva Wodehousian humor!
