This book does a pretty good job of explaining the basic concepts. But it doesn't seem to offer a complete coverage of the topics covered in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Physicist.......2004-02-07

We recently purchased this book and I find it extremely well written and useful. I would call it super for a physicist doing medical imaging research. The book reads like a reference text for a researcher. There are no cartoons or homework problems. The second edition is very up to date. The book could use some references to advanced information sources as it is a bit short on physics/mathematics details.

5 out of 5 stars suitable for teaching medical physicist wannabes now.......2002-04-22

I currently own the first edition of this book, and after flipping throug this new expanded 2nd edition, I'll be upgrading soon. The first book is an excellent text to use for teaching radiology residents the principles of medical imaging. Now, this second edition with greatly expanded content and pictures looks like it would be suitable for teaching a course to medical physics students. All sections appear to be significantly expanded with the additional detail needed for medical physicists. Still excellent for residents, but might go into a little more detail than they need.

5 out of 5 stars Kudos for an excellent textbook........2002-04-08

Opening the pages to this textbook is like stepping into a classroom. These authors obviously are not only experts in their respective subspecialties of medical physics, but they are also seasoned teachers of the art and science of this field of medicine. This is easily evidenced by the clarity of thought and completeness with which they treat each topic in this comprehensive, easily readable textbook. I highly recommend this textbook to all who have a need for such a clear, concise teaching of the many aspects of medical physics covered in this work.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Physics Review.......2002-03-13

This text book is the most up to date and comprehensive text book available for radiology residents preparing for the ABR exam as of this date 3/12/2002. I have recommended this text for my most serious students and they have done quite well on the ABR exam. ( Most have scored in the > 90th percentile in the U.S.) For residents who want to just pass the exam, I recommend Sprawls text.

    Book Description

This work was first-drafted five years ago at the invitation of the editors of the Encyclopedia of Mathematics and its Applications. However, it was found to contain insufficient physical applications for that series, hence it has finally come to rest at the doorstep of the American Mathematical Society. The first half of the work is little changed from the original, a fact which may partly explain both the illusions to applications and the elementary approach. It was written to be understood by a reader having minimal familiarity with continuous time stochastic processes. The most advance prerequisite is a discrete parameter martingale convergence theorem.

    General summary and outline:

    0. Introduction. Some gratuitous generalities on scientific method as it relates to diffusion theory.

    1. Brownian motion is defined by the characterization of P. Lévy. Then it is constructed in three basic ways and these are proved to be equivalent in the appropriate sense. Uniqueness theorem.

    2. Projective invariance and the Brownian bridge presented. Probabilistic and absolute properties are distinguished. Among the former: the distribution of the maximum, first passage time distributions, and fitting probabilities. Among the latter: law of created logarithm, quadratic variation, Hölder continuity, non-recurrence for $r\geq 2$.

    3. General methods of Markov processes adapted to diffusion. Analytic and probabilistic methods are distinguished. Among the former: transition functions, semigroups, generators, resolvents. Among the latter: Markov properties, stopping times, zero-or-one laws, Dynkin's formula, additive functionals.

    4. Classical modifications of Brownian motion. Absorption and the Dirichlet problem. Space-time process and the heat equation. Killed processes, Green functions, and the distributions of additive sectionals. Time-change theorem (classical case), parabolic equations and their solution semigroups, some basic examples, distribution of passage times.

    5. Local time: construction by random walk embedding. Local time processes. Trotter's theorem. The Brownian flow. Brownian excursions. The zero set and Lévy's equivalence theorem. Local times of classical diffusions. Sample path properties.

    6. Boundary conditions for Brownian motion. The general boundary conditions. Construction of the processes using local time. Green functions and eigenfunction expansions (compact case).

    7. The chapter is a "finale" on nonsingular diffusion. The generators $(d/dm)(d^+/dx^+)$ are characterized. The diffusions on open intervals are constructed. The conservative boundary conditions are obtained and their diffusions are constructed. The general additive functionals and nonconservative diffusions are developed and expressed in terms of Brownian motions.

The audience for this survey is anyone who desires an introduction to Markov processes with continuous paths which is both coherent and elementary. The approach is from the particular to the general. Each method is first explained in the simplest case and supported by examples. Therefore, the book should be readily understandable to anyone with a first course in measure-theoretic probability.

2 out of 5 stars Weak on rigor & physical insight = bad book.......2006-01-18

    Strengths:
    - Fairly complete coverage of the various properties of special functions. The introduction of these subjects is not good, but one could use it as a refrence for formulas.

    Weaknesses:
    - Topic selection and rigor are weak. Many important areas of mathematical physics are skipped over, or short changed. For example, the section on tensors is far too short. In addition, everything is introduced in index notation instead of coordinate free form. Also, the group theory section is very weak (not to mention short). The rotation group and lorentz group are discussed briefly, but there is no systematic introduction to lie groups or other important topics.
    - The book seems to focus on special functions, and solving differential equations. However, it does not introduce hilbert spaces well, and therefore the presentation seems like a bewildering array of bessel this and fourier that, without anything to tie it all together.

Overall, I'd say the book sacrifices depth by covering too many topics. If you want to really succeed you're going to need a full course each on linear (& some multilnear) algebra, mutlivariable calc & vector analysis, differential equations, complex analysis, differential geometry and group theory. If you want a condensed version, get byron and fuller. It's written systematically, and strikes (in my opinion) a perfect balance between rigor and pragmatism.

    2 out of 5 stars Won't teach you much.......2005-04-08

This book, like others have said, is a good book to go to if you need to look something up quickly, but is not something to learn from. We use this book in an undergrad math methods course in the physics department. Luckily i major in math, and know the topics we are covering, otherwise, this book would be useless.

5 out of 5 stars Great undergrad physics major book!.......2005-03-23

This undergraduate text makes Arfken really accessible. The new examples are great and most are from various fields of physics. This has helped me in my mechanics, E and M, and quantum mechanics classes. The long index is complete and really helps to find things quickly. The chapter on probability & statistics explains concepts especially well.

3 out of 5 stars Better Overview then Book.......2005-02-17

This book is much better as a reference book for someone who already understands the material then for a student just learning. The book covers everything from Coordinate Systems to Calculus of Variantions, PDQ's, and Special Unitary Groups in highly dense sections, with little or no examples.

The problems are extraordinarly tough, and they seem disjointed, lacking any real focus and coherence, exp. towards the front of the book. Once you get past the physics in the first part, and into the math section of the book, it slows down, and really explains ideas, as well as providing excellent problems to work.

I would recommend this book as a reference, but there are better books out there. For reference, I would also recommend Schaums Outlines; and for a text book, I would recommend David Hilbert's Mathematical Methods Vol I, and Vol II.

    2 out of 5 stars Better as a reference.......2005-01-26

I used this book for an undergraduate math methods for physicists course. While in the class I found it very difficult to learn anything from it, as it is rather dense. I found that most websites I looked to for help cited the book though. Now I find this book to be a very useful reference. It's definitions are fairly concise and topics are not spread throughout the book. Bottom line: great reference, poor learning tool.

ESSENTIALS OF Applied Physics A FOUNDATION COURSE FOR TECHNICAL, INDUSTRIAL, AND ENGINEERING STUDENTS By ROYAL M. FRYE, Ph. D. Professor of Physics, Boston University NEW YORK P R E N T I C E - H A L L , INC. 1947 COPYRIGHT, 1947, BY PRENTICE-HALL, INC. 70 FIFTH AVENUE, NEW YORK ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. NO PART OF THIS BOOK MAY BE REPRODUCED IN ANY FORM, BY MIMEO GRAPH OR ANY OTHER MEANS, WITHOUT PER MISSION IN WRITING FROM THE PUBLISHERS. PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES Of AMERICA Preface Physics is a prerequisite for courses in the curriculum of junior colleges, evening engineering schools, technical institutes, and advanced trade schools, owing to the fundamental position of the subject in all branches of engineering work. This book is one of a series of applied science textbooks designed to meet the needs of schools where a more concise course is given than is found in the average college physics textbook, and where numerous topics not found in a preparatory course in physics are essential. The orthodox arrangement of, first, mechanics, then sound, heat, electricity, and light is followed. Numerous illustrative problems are completely worked out. A summary of the irreducible minimum of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry necessary for a clear under standing of physics is included in the appendices. Modern viewpoints on light have been employed, while at the same time the full advantage of the wave theory of light has been retained. The electron current is used exclusively, rather than the conventional positive current. The practical electrical units are used instead of the two c. g. s. electrical systems of units. As preparation for this, the kilogram-meter-second system, as well as the English system of units, is used in mechanics. Likewise the kilogram-calorie is used instead of the gram-calorie. This work is the outgrowth of the authors experience in teaching engineering physics to many groups of students in evening engi neering schools. The material was developed and tested in the class room over a period of many years. It has proven effective for students whose needs for practical and applied knowledge of mechanics, heat, light, and electricity were paramount. ACKNOWLED9MENTS The pen sketches at the heads of the chapters and some of those in the body of the text are the contributions of Louise A. Frye. The diagrams, in addition to many of the pen sketches, were done by Ralph E. Wellings. A great many of the illustrative problems, as vi PREFACE well as the index, were prepared by Virginia M. Brigham, who also typed the manuscript. The author is indebted to Robert E. Hodgdon for numerous suggestions made during the course of many years 7 association in the teaching of the physics of engineering. It is impossible for the author to make adequate acknowledge ment to a long line of predecessors in the field of physics to whom he is indebted. ROYAL M. What must a man do in order to put an end to his bachelorhood? For George Finch, one of nature's white mice and probably the worst artist ever to put brush to canvas, there are many obstacles. Undoubtedly the greatest is his beloved Molly's fearsome stepmother, Mrs. Waddington, who has her eye on an eligible English lord for a son-in-law. Luckily, George has an ally in sharp-witted Hamilton Beamish, an old family friend of the Waddingtons, not to mention George's butler, Mullett, and his light-fingered girlfriend, Fanny, whose valuable skills are of particular interest to the would-be father-in-law. REVIEW: Wodehouse is the greatest comic writer ever. (Douglas Adams)

Wodehouse captures an era that probably never was but many of us wish it had. He does one of his best jobs, capturing Twenties New York at a roar in this neatly done up farce. A true hoot, and you can't beat his use of language. Just like reading a screwball comedy, laughs come often and out loud! The Small Bachelor is not to be missed by any true afficionado of P.G. Wodehouse
