4 out of 5 stars Concise overview for the nuclear experimentalist.......2000-08-23

Leo's book is a good, concise and concerning standard methods especially in nuclear spectroscopy up-to-date summary of the field. The basic physics ideas are introduced, although not too deeply discussed (but this is a book for the experimentalist, therefore no objections). It is a helpful companion in simple experimental considerations which come to an experimental nuclear spectroscopist every day: The color codes of resistors and the overview over the connectors in a CAMAC crate are examples for these features.

Elaborate references are given for each section that make it possible for the reader to find additional descriptions rather easily. Additional insight on dosimetry and radiation damage and some remarks on statistics make this book an interesting alternative to G.F. Knoll's "Radiation detection and measurement".

The emphasis of Leo's approach is surely (a) on a concise overview rather than an in-depth discussion and (b) on nuclear spectroscopy (gamma and particle detection at some MeV or so) rather than medium and large-scale high-energy physics experiments. Widely used components of high-energy physics equipment are, however, presented, but additional literature might be needed.

One final remark to my fellow reviewer Fabio: One example for a "statistical process" is e.g. the number of electron-hole pairs created in the detection of a charged particle or gamma ray. This process is truely statistical, i.e. it does not depend on things that the experimentator has at hand. The intrinsic resolution of a high-purity Germanium detector with respect to a, say, 3 MeV gamma ray cannot be changed (at least to a large extent). Have a look into Leo's book if you don't believe me!

3 out of 5 stars Quite deep overview, but statistics..........1998-11-27

It's a good book: very good English, it treats quite everything from the point of view of CAUSES! It's full of precise references (good for the thesis!).

Expecially good topics: ionization and scintillation detectors; photomultipliers. Lacks: calorimetres and Cerenkov counters! For these topics I suggest: 'Particle Detectors' (many auth.), Cambridge University Press.

Just one thing about statistics: you have always to substitute this sentence:

''... because of the statistical nature of the process...''

with

''...because of the uncertainties related to the process, we choose to treat it as statistical...'' OK, it's a bit longer; but are you sure that all advanced physicians know that Caos does not exist as a real entity? It's just a choice of the experimenter to supply lacks in understanding and measuring the process or to simplify it. If you don't believe so, I ask you: why do you make research? Let's talk about it.

Book Description

There are more than ten thousand particle accelerators in the world from the linear accelerators used for cancer therapy in modern hospitals to the giant 'atom-smashers' at international particle physics laboratories used to unlock the secrets of creation. Many scientists and engineers spend their lives designing, constructing, and operating these machines - yet few universities include the subject of particle accelerators in their curricula. The few courses that do exist and the summer schools run by the big accelerator laboratories lack a simple introduction which covers the essentials of the subject for the many who need to learn how these machines work. This book fills that gap and takes the reader through each of the aspects of a modern accelerator giving enough information to unlock the door to the subject but does not overload the understanding with mathematics. Anyone with a general interest in modern technology based on a fascinating variety of physics and engineering will find much of interest in this book.

4 out of 5 stars European efforts predominating.......2004-06-06

Very specialised book. Written mostly for engineers involved in designing accelerators, and graduate students in physics who might have experiments at an accelerator.

No abstruse theory here. A book for experimentalists. Wilson describes clearly the differences between cyclotrons and linear accelerators and synchrotrons. The advantages and disadvantages of each. With real life examples, like those at CERN (of course), and at SLAC and Fermilab.

It does seem that the baton is passing from the US in this field. The European scientists have somehow managed to keep their funding together, which Wilson praises. He undoubtedly help bring this about. Certainly, an impression from this book is that if you are starting out in experimental particle physics, you might do best to direct your efforts at CERN.

    Book Description

The standard model brings together two theories of particle physics in order to describe the interactions of subatomic particles, except those due to gravity. This book uses the standard model as a vehicle for introducing quantum field theory. In doing this the book also introduces much of the phenomenology on which this model is based. The book uses a modern approach, emphasizing effective field theory techniques, and contains brief discussions of some of the main proposals for going beyond the standard model, such as seesaw neutrino masses, supersymmetry, and grand unification. Requiring only a minimum of background material, this book is ideal for graduate students in theoretical and experimental particle physics. It concentrates on getting students to the level of being able to use this theory by doing real calculations with the minimum of formal development, and contains several problems. Book Description

The complex technology of particle accelerators is based upon a series of often rather simple physical concepts. This comprehensive introduction to the subject focuses on providing a deep physical understanding of these key ideas. The book surveys the many aspects of accelerator physics and not only explains how accelerators work, but also why the underlying physics leads to a particular choice of design or technique, and points out the limitations of the technology. The clear and thorough mathematical treatment always emphasizes the physical principles described by the equations, and includes a range of calculations which develop a genuine feeling for the quantities and concepts involved.

              Book Description

The International Conference on Calorimetry in Particle Physics is the major forum for the state-of-the-art developments of calorimetry technologies. The Tenth Conference was attended by more than 150 physicists from 16 countries and covered all aspects of calorimetric particle detection and measurements, with emphasis on high energy physics and astrophysics experiments.

The proceedings contain three parts: introductory papers, contributed papers and perspective papers. The introduction starts with a historical review of calorimetry developments, and continues with overviews of the current status of calorimetry in high energy physics and astrophysics, which are followed by discussions on calorimetry in future accelerator facilities, such as linear colliders and the Super B factories. A "hot" technology regarding the "energy flow concept" is also discussed. The contributed papers are organized in 11 sessions. The perspective papers summarize the physics and limitation of calorimeter applications in high energy physics, astrophysics and medical industries.

                Book Description

Particle physics is the science that pursues the age-old quest for the innermost structure of matter and the fundamental interactions between its constituents. Modern experiments in this field rely increasingly on calorimetry, a detection techniques in which the particles of interest are absorbed in the detector. Calorimeters are very intricate instruments, their performance characteristics depend in subtle, sometimes counter-intuitive ways on design details. This book, written by one of the world's foremost experts, is the first comprehensive text on this topic. It provides a fundamental and systematic introduction, in which many intriguing calorimeter features are explained. It also describes the state of the art, both for what concerns the fundamental understanding of calorimetric particle detection and the actual detectors that have been or are being built and operated in experiments. In the last chapter, some landmark scientific discoveries in which calorimetry has played an important role are discussed. This book summarizes and puts into perspective work described in some 600 scientific papers, listed in the bibliography.

                  Book Description

The fashionably funny new novel from the bestselling author of Pants on Fire.

Cross Bridget Jones with The Devil Wears Prada and you have this engaging romantic comedy about love, sex, friendships, and relationships...with a lot of style.

Emily Pointer, stylist for Chic magazine, has a rule about fashion: never wear anything older than six months...unless it's so old you can pass it off as vintage. And never, ever fall in love, unless it's for a killer pair of Manolos.

With a witty and biting insider's take on the fashion world; the crazy circuit of the New York-London-Milan-Paris designer shows, and the most humbling of all experiences, love, Maggie Alderson delivers a poignant, funny novel of success and revenge, friendship and flirtation, passion and Prada that's as fresh and rejuvenating as an afternoon at Bliss Spa.

                  3 out of 5 stars Ok book.......2007-05-26

I bought this based on a review I read comparing this book to the Sophie Kinsella books and I have to say I prefer the Kinsella books. This book was okay but I read a lot of chick lit and it didn't hold my attention like the Kinsella novels and Jane Green novels do.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting and light read.......2006-03-01

I really struggled with the fact the key character made the choice to have an affair... it all works out in the end and the characters are ok and interesting insight into the fashion world... Fun light read.

4 out of 5 stars Fun vacation read.......2006-02-25

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would - was a fun read.

2 out of 5 stars Hard to get into.......2006-01-28

I just finished this book last week and I have to admit, it was a bit of a struggle to stick with it. I think part of the problem is that how the fashion shows go on and on and on and we basically encounter the same thing at every show-the boss that is mean a lot, the stuck-up co-worker, the people watching at the shows. It's all the same. I didn't connect with any of the characters, especially Emily. I realise that she is in the fashion world (and fills the unofficial pre-requisite of chick-lit, that almost all women in chick-lit have to work in fashion or publishing) but Emily was just too superficial and whiny for me. It wasn't like Bergdorf Blondes, where I knew that was what I going to get when I read it. But Handbags and Gladrags tries to be deep and it just can't go there with a character like Emily who only really worries about buying clothes at fashion shows and worrying about how to pay for them, how thin she is, and how to get with Miles. I bought the book and thought I would really like it but I was sorely disappointed. I probably will not read another Maggie Alderson book.

3 out of 5 stars The title says it all.......2006-01-05

I love fashion. I have a huge wardrobe and collect handbags. I can be superficial. STILL this novel bored me to tears until about halfway through. In short, it is the story of a fashion editor who revels in the Fashion Weeks of various cities, meets a cute and down to earth fashion photographer and has an extra-marital affair. The first half of the novel talks endlessly about fashion shows, shopping and...shopping. How many times can one really enjoy reading about the joys of Prada boots?

The second half starts to get deeper into the characters' lives and explores their motivations, which is quite enjoyable. Even though I only gave this book three stars, it does end up being a decent, light book. I think the author was trying to pull some "Princess de Cleves" style: focusing on triviality at first to show a contrast later on. However, like Madame de Lafayette, she should've kept it more in the twenty page range rather than the hundred+ page range.

I highly suggest Pants on Fire, another M. Alderson book that handles the trivial with a lot more excitement for the reader.
