Book Description

The completely revised new edition of the classical book on Statistical Mechanics covers the basic concepts of equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical physics. In addition to a deductive approach to equilibrium statistics and thermodynamics based on a single hypothesis - the form of the microcanonical density matrix - this book treats the most important elements of non-equilibrium phenomena. Intermediate calculations are presented in complete detail. Problems at the end of each chapter help students to consolidate their understanding of the material. Beyond the fundamentals, this text demonstrates the breadth of the field and its great variety of applications. Modern areas such as renormalization group theory, percolation, stochastic equations of motion and their applications to critical dynamics, kinetic theories, as well as fundamental considerations of irreversibility, are discussed. The text will be useful for advanced students of physics and other natural sciences; a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics is presumed.

5 out of 5 stars This should be the canonical undergrad Stat Mech text.......2007-03-18

I took Stat Mech in my senior year of college, and the assigned text book was Reif's "Fundamentals of Statistical and Thermal Physics." I'm glad somebody recommended that I supplement my course with this one, because it's a far more thorough handling of the subject.

For one thing, it approaches statistical physics with a quantum mechanical point of view (Reif doesn't). This was immensely useful for my understanding of the subject since I'd already taken QM. It's also exceedingly easy to read - well laid out and with helpful diagrams. Sections are well labeled and organised, as are equations (yeah, LaTeX!). And the problems at the end of each section are numerous, and fun to do (you won't find the answers at the back, though).

As for the material itself, the entire book takes a deductive approach based on the form of the microcanonical density matrix. It's a beautifully simple albeit non-standard approach. In fact, the text is peppered with non-standard forms of many of the key equations, which are very interesting.

All in all, this is a very well written/translated, easy to understand introduction to statistical physics, with enough additional material to serve you beyond your first course with it.

There are too many junky books on statistical mechanics, reading them is a waste of time. This book is extremly eleganlty writen, you will enjoy reading it.

4 out of 5 stars cogent grad level text.......2004-11-29

I have found Schwabl's Statistical Mechanics to be an indispensible reference this semester even though it's not on the reading list for my stat mech course (intro graduate level). I should qualify that statement by saying that I've used it primarily for the Ch.6 on magnetism, and the Ch.4 on ideal quantum gases, and I have not looked at any of the exercises at the end of chapters so I cannot attest to their (non)usefulness.

The text is well made (LaTeX!) and full of illuminating diagrams. Other than a persistant occurence of the word "und" the translation from german seems to be flawless, and the notation seems pretty standard, consistent, and intuitive.

As for the presentation, it seems a bit eclectic. Not that I'm an expert, but Ch.1 is an extremely terse forray into some advanced concepts that are irrelevant until about Ch.3. It seems odd to bring up the microcanonical/grand canonical ensembles before the chapter on thermodynamics, but that could just be my bias due to the structure of the course I'm taking right now.

The Ch 8 on Brownian motion, the Fokker-Plank and Langevin eqns is not standard, but actually quite fascinating & I don't see why those topics are usually left for more advanced stat mech books.

In short, a great supplement! And to the professors out there, I would suggest at least mentioning the existence of this book.

    Book Description

This work began with the author’s exploration of the applicability of the finite deformation theory of elasticity when various standard assumptions such as convexity of various energies or ellipticity of the field equations of equilibrium are relinquished. The finite deformation theory of elasticity turns out to be a natural vehicle for the study of phase transitions in solids where thermal effects can be neglected. This is an essential work to those interested in the development and application of continuum-mechanical models that describe the macroscopic response of materials capable of undergoing stress- or temperature-induced transitions between two solid phases. The focus is on the evolution of phase transitions which may be either dynamic or quasi-static, controlled by a kinetic relation which in the framework of classical thermomechanics represents information that is supplementary to the usual balance principles and constitutive laws of conventional theory. The book should be of interest to mechanicians, materials scientists, geophysicists, and applied mathematicians.

        Book Description

Phase transitions in which crystalline solids undergo structural changes present an interesting problem in the interplay between the crystal structure and the ordering process. This text, intended for readers with some prior knowledge of condensed-matter physics, emphasizes the basic physics behind such spontaneous structural changes in crystals. Starting with the relevant thermodynamic principles, the book discusses the nature of order variables and their collective motion in a crystal lattice; in a structural phase transition a singularity in such a collective mode is responsible for the lattice instability, as revealed by soft phonons. This mechanism is analogous to the interplay of a charge-density wave and a periodically deformed lattice in low- dimensional conductors. The text also describes experimental methods for modulated crystal structures and gives examples of structural changes in representative systems. The book is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical, part includes such topics as: the Landau theory of phase transitions; statistics, correlations and the mean-field approximation; pseudospins and their collective modes; soft lattice modes and pseudospin condensates; lattice imperfections and their role in the phase transitions of real crystals. The second part discusses experimental studies of modulated crystals using x-ray diffraction, neutron inelastic scattering, light scattering, dielectric measurements, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. While the presence of modulated structures in the critical region was not particularly suggested in the published.

Many researchers encounter nonequilibrium phenomena in their studies of order in seemingly chaotic systems. One promising approach to understanding nonequilibrium phenomena is by using lattice gas models which consider complex systems as collections of simple elements each related by simple rules. This book, by leading researchers in the field, presents an up to date and accessible account of this fascinating subject and includes many references. It will be of interest to statistical physicists and to researchers in areas including mathematics, chemistry, mathematical biology and geology interested in complex systems.

          Book Description

This volume collects the contributions of a conference held in June 2005, at the laboratoire Paul Painlevé (UMR CNRS 8524) in Lille, France. The meeting was intended to review hot topics and future trends in fluid dynamics, with the objective to foster exchanges of theoretical and numerical viewpoints.

The content of the volume can be split into three categories:

A first set of contributions is devoted to the description of the connection between different models of fluid dynamics. An important part of these papers relies on the discussion of the modeling issues, the identification of the relevant dimensionless coefficients, and on the physical interpretation of the models.

A second set of contributions considers the question of the stability of particular structures in fluid mechanics equations.

The third set of contributions is concerned with numerical issues; it is indeed a crucial challenge to design numerical schemes that are able to capture the complex features generated by fluid flows.

            Book Description

Nucleation is the initial step of every first-order phase transition, and most phase transitions encountered both in everyday life and industrial processes are of the first-order. Using an elegant classical theory based on thermodynamics and kinetics, this book provides a fully detailed picture of multi-component nucleation. As many of the issues concerning multi-component nucleation theory have been solved during the last 10-15 years, it also thoroughly integrates both fundamental theory with recent advances presented in the literature. Classical Nucleation Theory in Multicomponent Systems serves as a textbook for advanced thermodynamics courses, as well as an important reference for researchers in the field. The main topics covered are: the basic relevant thermodynamics and statistical physics; modelling a molecular cluster as a spherical liquid droplet; predicting the size and composition of the nucleating critical clusters; kinetic models for cluster growth and decay; calculating nucleation rates; and a full derivation and application of nucleation theorems that can be used to extract microscopic cluster properties from nucleation rate measurements. The assumptions and approximations needed to build the classical theory are described in detail, and the reasons why the theory fails in certain cases are explained. Relevant problems are presented at the end of each chapter.

5 out of 5 stars The Shepherd & other Xmas Stories.......2006-12-23

In Canada people start calling the CBC in early December to ask when they will broadcast the story, "The Shepherd" read on the radio by the late Alan Maitland. I suspect that much of Canada was quiet the last half hour when they just played it on Radio One.
It is a tense & beautiful spirit/ghost story about a young RAF pilot lost over the North Sea on Xmas Eve.
I highly recommend it for its expert narration, as an event for the whole family to listen to, ages 10 & up, & as just a darn good story.

The rest of the stories, each w/a bit of irony or a bittersweet taste, are well done, too.

                    Book Description

Dickens gave his first formal expression to his Christmas thoughts in his series of small books, the first of which was the famous "Christmas Carol." There followed four others: "The Chimes," "The Cricket on the Hearth," "The Battle of Life," and "The Haunted Man." The five are known today as the "Christmas Books." Of them all the "Carol" is the best known and loved, and "The Cricket on the Hearth," although third in the series, is perhaps next in popularity, and is especially familiar to Americans through Joseph Jefferson's characterisation of Caleb Plummer.

THE kettle began it! Don't tell me what Mrs. Peerybingle said. I know better. Mrs. Peerybingle may leave it on record to the end of time that she couldn't say which of them began it; but, I say the kettle did. I ought to know, I hope!

                    1 out of 5 stars Useless format.......2001-12-01

A Dickens Christmas story is meant to be read in front of the fire with children gathered 'round. As configured in this particular ebook format you cannot do anything but sit in front of your screen and read ninety pages of nineteenth century prose. Not useful at all! This ebook would be far more usefull if, for example, you could copy or print it onto holiday paper. Since this story is in the public domain, blocking those options in this ebook is silly.

                    1 out of 5 stars Yuck!.......1996-12-18

When Dickens was good, he was very very good. When he was bad, he was wordy and sappy and boring. Did you ever wonder why you never heard of the three stories in this book? Because they're so unremarkable! The title story is the best; i.e. it's the only one that's even readable. Do yourself a favor, don't read this book
