        Book Description

Thin films of conducting materials, such as metals, alloys and semiconductors are currently in use in many areas of science and technology, particularly in modern integrated circuit microelectronics that require high quality thin films for the manufacture of connection layers, resistors and ohmic contacts. These conducting films are also important for fundamental investigations in physics, radio-physics and physical chemistry. Physical Properties of Thin Metal Films provides a clear presentation of the complex physical properties particular to thin conducting films and includes the necessary theory, confirming experiments and applications. The volume will be an invaluable reference for graduates, engineers and scientists working in the electronics industry and fields of pure and applied science.

          Book Description

This book gives an overview of the nanostructure and the resulting electronic and optical properties of metal nanoparticles embedded in insulating polymer matrices. The preparation of such materials is reviewed with special attention to thin film deposition techniques. Deposition parameters, chemical and physical properties of the matrix material as well as the application potential of such films are described. Extensive investigations of the nanostructure are presented and detailed descriptions of the particle geometry given. As a result of various diffusion processes during thermal annealing or electron- and laser-beam irradiation, substantial changes of the metal particle size are observed. Extensive measurements of the electronic and optical properties are presented to demonstrate the detailed relationships between nanostructure and elctronic and optical properties. Modelling of the optical properties with various theories is explained in detail.

1 out of 5 stars grasping at straws.......2006-03-11

As an ex brit who was raised in a british boarding school in the 50's and who is painfully familiar with the foibles, follies and general demented attitudes of the british upper classes,i found this novel to be extraordinarily dull. There are traces of Sharpe in it,but i feel Sharpe has succumbed to what i gratutiously call the "Hollywood" syndrome. Find something which appeals to the masses, then flog it to death. This book is really nothing more than nastiness without a real purpose to it; money and sales seem to be the motive behind it. The constant emphasis on lesbianism and sexual escapism (and i am not a prude) are simply crude and unamusing. Shame on you Mr Sharpe for descending from brilliance into mediocrity.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2006-02-27

I've long been a Tom Sharpe fan, but "The Midden" just doesn't live up to his previous books. Three specific criticisms:

              (1) it's just not very funny. Sure, there are occasional amusing passages, but nothing that gives rise to the uncontrollable laughter we've come to expect from Sharpe.

              (2) a lot of the writing is gratitously nasty. Sharpe's writing has always been 'edgy', and that's okay ... but here he includes long irrelevant passages, filled with unnecessarily coarse language. The personal attacks on Margaret Thatcher and John Major strike an unpleasant note, too.

              (3) much of the book reads like a badly done pastiche of "Blott on the Landscape" and "Riotous Assembly".

2 out of 5 stars not actually very funny.......2005-09-05

Never having read any Sharpe and being aware of his reputation as one of our leading comic writers I thought it about time I gave him a go. The upper classes are inherently amusing and he is held in high regard so I was looking forward to a bit of a chuckle.

50 pages in and with not so much as a ripple of mirth I gave up. Comic writers should be funny, or am I being too demanding?

4 out of 5 stars Not his best, but still hilarious........2004-02-11

Tom Sharpe is an absolute madman. The Midden is another example of that. Timothy Bright is in his late twenties. Finicial advisor with nothing but a bright future. Then it all goes into disarray when his advice just fails. Totally in debt,Timothy hooks up with the mob, robs his Aunt, and has to frame one of the top judges or else the mob turns him into "piggy chops".

Timothy sets out on his mission, shacks up with his Uncle for a bit before moving on. Tired of Timothy leaching and stealing his tobacco, the Uncle decides to slip some "toad" into the tobacco which Tim has been smoking. Toad is some kind of hallucinogetic that sends Timothy off on his scooter naked at 140 mph. Timothy finds a houseboat, finds a way in and hops into the bed. Unknowingly the house boat belongs to the Chief Constable and the bed is also occupied by the chiefs wife. The chief beats the heck out of Tim and chucks him in the basement. Trying to figure away to dispose of the intruder without causing any seen of finding a naked man in bed with his wife he decides to dump him off at the hated Middens mansion.

It was insane up to this point, then it just gets off the hook. The chief in his worries of getting pinned in dumping the the naked boy, decides he will frame the Middens with acts of child abuse. From here we get bumbling policemen acting like sheep to get closer to the mansion,an old geezer remembering his buffalo hunting days trying to shoot the cops. A church group on a retreat and on and on,and when it all comes down all heck breaks loose.Absolute chaos and hilarity. A must read for Sharpe fans.

              4 out of 5 stars Such a plot !.......2001-08-24

An amazing history, just like Sharpe is able to make them. As a respectable English humour writer, he throws his characters in incredible situations, and mostly what can happen worse... just happens, with an almost mathematical regularity. I just like such "complicated", incredible stories.

This report reviews functional foods from a multidisciplinary perspective focusing on safety, legal/policy aspects, economy, public perceptions and ethics. It attempts to clarify the main issues and provides comprehensive recommendations for policymaking, especially since functional foods are being introduced into society at a particularly sensitive moment when food has become a main issue in public debates and a focal point of political activity in Europe. Diet-related diseases have assumed epidemic proportions significantly affecting the quality of life while obesity is spreading to the majority of the adult population but also to young people. These foods assume a highly targeted solution to diet-related diseases with effective reduction of risk and improved physical and mental well-being, but are still faced with a host of unresolved issues.

1 out of 5 stars An unimaginative retread of more interesting, useful books.......2004-07-06

As an early childhood educator, I was excited to read this book. I was looking forward to new, imaginative ideas for my students' garden projects, which the three southern Illinois authors promised in their introduction.

Instead---I was startled by the utter lack of imagination I found in this book. Plans for a dinosaur garden, sensory garden, and bird/butterfly garden are old news and have been around for decades in early childhood education. I am still amazed that the authors took credit for ideas that have been around for so long. While there were some valuable garden tips from the third author (Midden), I found the teaching tips from the first two teachers/authors (Starbuck and Olthof) truly awful and cumbersome in design.

Finally, I liked the idea of providing recipes that would be derived completely from the children's gardens. I was again aghast that the recipes (such as basil tomato tart, basil cream pasta, marigold cheesecake and chive potato pancakes) had almost NO ingredients from the children's gardens! The pancakes recipe only had chives from the gardens, and the marigold cheesecake recipe had only two teaspoons of marigold petals and some lemon balm leaves. Why not come up with some creative ideas for recipes that the children can cook? All four of these recipes, which I found from other sources and which are NOT the authors' original recipes, are complicated even for adults.

It would be nice for these teachers to put on their thinking caps and make this book child- and educator-friendly. I am not sure of the audience intended by these authors, but it certainly isn't my students and it most certainly isn't me or the parents with whom I work.

Other books in this area are much better than the Starbuck et al book---these include "Beyond the Bean Seed" (which is a fabulous book much more in tune with the needs of educators, parents and children) and "The Children's Kitchen Garden."

Don't waste your money on the Starbuck et al book. It is uncreative, poorly written and loosely based on other books that do their job a hundred times better.

4 out of 5 stars Useful for teachers of young children.......2004-04-21

This book was written by three women who developed a garden for young children in southern Illinois. They offer lots of ideas and suggestions, mostly based on their experience. The reader feels that they have been through it all - applying for grants, working around bureaucracy, being allotted an awkward piece of land, searching for donations. And they have come up with a valuable guidebook that starts by answering the question "Why Garden?"

The second chapter deals with engaging children in gardening and the book then goes on to planning and building a garden, working with children in the garden, frequently asked questions and a great section on universal garden learning experiences that can be undertaken in any garden. These are really valuable to anyone teaching a child a love of plants and gardening.

The book ends with some recipes for eating what has been grown, and generous lists of references and resources.

This is by far the most useful book on gardening with children that I have found. It is comprehensive and leads the reader from concept, through the challenges to the many valuable learning experiences involved in gardening with children.

                      Book Description

The Burton Acres Shell Midden site is located on Vashon Island in Puget Sound, at an advantageous spot for fishing and shellfishing. Although it had been the focus of preservation efforts, little was known about the contents of the site until a winter storm in 1995 caused severe erosion. In response, a collaborative effort between the Burke Museum, University of Washington, King County Landmarks and Heritage Commission, the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, Vashon Park District, and McMurray Middle School resulted in a unique two-week public project involving 375 volunteers. Members of the public were invited to share in the discovery process, following archaeological protocol from excavation to artifact cataloging. This book continues that discovery process, presenting and explaining the data gleaned from the site and offering interpretations based on the various objects found that speak to people's lives at this place.

Multiple perspectives on the history of Burton Acres Shell Midden express the collaborative nature of the project, with contributions by Puyallup tribal member Judy Wright, cultural anthropologist Llyn De Danaan, and several archaeologists including a summary by Julie Stein.

Vashon Island Archaeology describes the step-by-step guidelines developed for this public investigation, useful for other archaeologists involved in similar projects. It also provides insight into the careful and extensive planning required for such an endeavor. Finally, it demonstrates that a community that participates in the discovery of their local history gains a broad understanding of the importance of stewardship, preservation, and interpretation of cultural resources.

                      Product Description

Imagine my surprise when I discovered my home sits on an ancient Indian mound. Imagine my surprise when I found that 100,000 Indians were living in Florida when the Europeans arrived in the 1500s, and that they had been here for 12,000 yearsÂ… and today they are gone--extinct--no descendants. I had to know more! From the Everglades to the Suwannee River I searched Florida's west coast and discovered 165 aboriginal sites. From nomadic hunters of giant mastodons to architects of sophisticated temple towns and complex canal cities, these naked "Ancient Floridians" fished the bays, produced the finest wood carvings and pottery in North America, and buried their dead with ritualistic Black Drink ceremonies. They left no record of their existence, only hundreds of strange mounds which are today being destroyed at an electrifying rate. Here, at last, is their story as revealed by the discoveries found in their mounds!

I've lived in Florida, and studied archeology, all my life. Mac Perry reported on many sites that I had never known about, plus added information on those that I'd already visited. An excellent book, with a clear, interesting style.
