Book Description
This is the first book to give a comprehensive and coherent account of the basic methods of characterizing a solid through its interaction with electromagnetic fields. The theoretical treatment focuses on the determination of the essential parameters of a solid (energy bands, energy levels, effective mass of electrons and holes, etc.) from measured absorption coefficients, scattering data, magneto-optical results, etc. The discussion is at an intermediate level and all the formulas are carefully deduced and explained. All types of solids (semiconductors, crystals, metals, etc.) are covered and the latest experimental results are also presented.

Book Description
The last decade has witnessed an explosive development in the growth of epitaxial layers and structures partially with atomic scale dimensions. This progress has created new demands for the characterization of those structures. Various methods have been refined and new ones were developed with the main emphasis on non-destructive in-situ characterization. Among those, methods which rely on the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter are particularly valuable. In this book standard methods such as far-infrared spectroscopy, ellipsometry, Raman scattering, and high-resolution X-ray diffraction are presented, as well as new advanced techniques which provide the potential for better in-situ characterization of epitaxial structures.

Book Description
This new volume of the highly respected
Physics of Thin Films Serial discusses inhomogeneity in real films and surfaces. The volume, guest-edited by K. Vedam, follows the growth of thin films both from the surface of the substrate, and from the atomic level, layer by layer. The text features coverage of Real-Time Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (RTSE) and Reflectance Anisotropy (RA), two major breakthrough optical techniques used to characterize real time and insitu films and surfaces. In six insightful chapters, the contributors assess the impact of these techniques, their strengths and limitations, and their potential for further development.

Book Description
Defects in ion-implanted semiconductors are important and will likely gain increased importance as annealing temperatures are reduced with successive IC generations. Novel implant approaches, such as MdV implantation, create new types of defects whose origin and annealing characteristics will need to be addressed. Publications in this field mainly focus on the effects of ion implantation on the material and the modification in the implanted layer after high temperature annealing. The editors of this volume and Volume 45 focus on the physics of the annealing kinetics of the damaged layer. An overview of characterization tehniques and a critical comparison of the information on annealing kinetics is also presented.
Key Features
* Provides basic knowledge of ion implantation-induced defects
* Focuses on physical mechanisms of defect annealing
* Utilizes electrical, physical, and optical characterization tools for processed semiconductors
* Provides the basis for understanding the problems caused by the defects generated by implantation and the means for their characterization and elimination

Customer Reviews:
Tongue in cheek? Still not sure........2007-09-24
I picked this book up a couple of years after first seeing the film. I'd never seen the lead actors before, though Paul Giamatti seems everywhere these days, and really enjoyed the movie version (in large part, note, to a strong Jones for Sandra Oh). I'm about halfway through the novel and it, too, is enjoyable, but it required huge effort to ignore the horribleness of the writing and it amazes me the novel was optioned because of absolutely basic writing flaws. It reads for the most part, like a novel by a Freshman college student who "wants to be an author" in a fiction class. I mean, look at the first line, quoted by Amazon in the sales blurb. Could there be more pretentious, inelegant writing? "It was a dark and stormy night..." quality. The writing only gets worse as you read and it leaves you open mouthed in disbelief. I didn't, and still do not know if it is all tongue in cheek since the main character, the narrator, is a failed author (though he's had some success in film) and maybe his thesaurus-driven hyperbole and inapt descriptive powers are a long running joke. I tend to think Pickett is simply a bad writer. Though I enjoy the situation in the book, this is fueled by my love of wine and had I not seen the movie I would have stopped at page 1.
All of this leads me to wonder how this was ever printed, let alone how the director both got a hold of it and himself managed to hack his way through it. Of course, once the film was made, everyone will ignore reality and jump on the bandwagon of blind praise as we see in the number of 5-star reviews here on Amazon (complete with the seemingly obligatory wine-analogy cliches, like "the story pours out uplifting and warming as a fine pinot..."), but what editor read past the first line and offered to publish this, and why didn't they, if they managed to see the kernel of fun in it, why didn't they EDIT the bad writing out?
In short, I have enjoyed this book so far (page 200) simply through a massive effort of will to ignore the writing and just follow the story line.
A treasure.......2007-09-24
This book was amazing. I don't know what people are talking about when they say it led to a great movie. The movie was absolute garbage in comparison with the book. They're barely the same. This book was funny and absorbing. The best books are usually about things that you're not interested in. A man's last hurrah before he gets married wasn't something I was interested in, but Rex Pickett made it so endearing. Miles wasn't nearly as boring as in the movie, he had a mischievious spark, there was likability in him. He wasn't as depressed as he was portrayed onscreen. This book was simply a joy to read.
minus one star for snobbery.......2007-09-04
Thoroughly enjoyed this easy, thoughtful read. At times the prose was brilliant. There was the 'thumbprint on a a window of a skyscraper' line that made it into the movie, but I also enjoyed this one:
"I was starting to get drunk now, and I was clinging with my fingertips to the last vestige of decorum. Soon, however, I knew there would come a moment when, without anyone's bidding, I would slip through a crack in the floorboards and find myself rowing across the River Styx with my demon entourage, and not until morning would I fully be able to assess the consequences."
Good stuff!
And now, the not so good:
"Our dates cameback to the table. Colloquies had taken place on opposite sides of the restaurant and we were now ready for the hoped-for rapprochement, the segue to higher zeniths of libidinousness."
Jeez!
But the real reason I'm docking Mr Pickett his fifth star is an interview I read, one he did for a screenwriters group. Yes, I know i'm supposed to rate the book not the person, but there is undoubtedly some intersection between the story of Miles Raymond and Pickett's life. In the interview, Pickett referred to Stephen King as a "hack", and that, given the choice between being a King or a Kafke, he'd choose the latter.
I found this disingenuous, as it sounds like Pickett was at the end of his rope financially at the time he wrote Sideways. There's no grand theme to the book--Pickett's no Kafke. It's D*ck Lit, as one reviewer called it. He should be happy the story has reached and touched as many people as it has. (And made him wealthier in the process!)
Hilarious, good fun!.......2007-07-20
This is the most fun I have ever had reading a book. Ever. I sat at my kitchen table for two nights in a row (until the book was finished) with a glass of Pinot Noir in hand. I found myself laughing out loud at every other page. Pickett is a clever writer who offers hilarious commentary and wit at every turn. Miles Raymond, the narrator, is depressed and sarcastic and truly/darkly funny. He reminds me, quite fondly, of the male version of Dolores Price (from Wally Lamb's "She's Come Undone").
Pickett is also a word nerd of sorts, so if you are into "collecting vocabulary," you are almost sure to learn some new things here. Oh, and of course, there are handfuls of wine facts at your disposal.
The movie was sensational, but the the book (as per usual) is even better. I was glad to have seen the movie first, because it made imagining the book's characters all the more hilarious (Giamatti and Church were sensational as Miles and Jack).
I cannot help but laugh at a reviewer who was offended by the fact that the two main characters are winos ("who promote drinking and driving"!). That is what the book is about! Take away the drinking and debauchery and you are left with something that never would have been published. This is not a book for those readers who make the mistake of taking life too seriously. This is meant to be a good time, and it is. It is not a how-to manual, but a fantastic work of fiction. This is a book I will certainly read again and again--because everybody needs to get a little sideways now and then. Cheers.
Getting sideways with two grape nuts. .......2007-05-23
"I'm a very happily single man," the narrator of Rex Pickett's debut novel says. "A glass of wine, a crusty piece of baguette, a good book, and I'm fine" (p. 25).
I read Pickett's novel after seeing the 2004 Academy and Golden Globe winning film adaptation. With a couple more plot twists, it tells the story of two longtime friends who travel to Santa Ynez wine country for a week-long adventure together. The cynical narrator, Miles (played by Paul Giamatti in the film) is a struggling writer and an oenophile, divorced but still in love with his recently remarried ex-wife, Victoria. His soon-to-be-married actor friend, Jack (played by Thomas Haden Church) is a suave party guy. Whereas Miles wants nothing more than to spend the week drinking wine, eating haute cuisine, playing golf, and sending Jack off with panache, Jack is only interested in getting laid one last time. Miles and Jack are similar in many ways that are not so obvious at first, the male grape-geek versions of Thelma and Louise, and reminscient of every bad date known to women. Miles is addicted to wine, Jack to sex. Miles is no stranger to his "dark side," and what Jack lacks in depth he makes up for with his libido.
Soonafter arriving in wine country, while consuming massive amounts of wine (pinot noir, to be exact), they meet world-weary Maya (played by Virginia Madsen), a waitress at Miles' favorite restaurant, the Hitching Post, and her earthy friend, Terra (played by Sandra Oh), a sexy winery employee. Neither is aware of Jack's impending nuptials. When Jack pursues a sexual relationship with Terra, and Miles pursues a casual interest in Maya, their friendship is strained to the limits and they become frustrated with each other. When Miles discovers Jack has paid Maya $1000 to seduce him, his friendship with Jack reaches its breaking point. In the end, Sideways is as much about friendship as finding the meaning in one's own life. If you liked the movie, you'll love the book.

Book Description
Roseanna Plow is perfectly content with her nice, simple life on Long Island, despite the fact that she’s being driven slowly insane by her meddling mother, who resembles Donna Reed on drugs. Rosie is very happy with her handsome husband and a fulfilling career as job counselor for the developmentally challenged. It might not be glamorous work, but Rosie is proud of the fact that she cares more about people than Prada. What more could a woman want in life? Except maybe being able to wear a sexy thong that doesn’t make her behind look like a rump roast in butcher string…
But when Rosie’s incredible husband turns out to be an incredible putz—sleeping with her best friend Inga—her life goes from Seventh Heaven to Jerry Springer in the blink of an eye and the tip of a wine glass. Alone and deceived, but with her sense of humor still intact, Rosie turns to her wonderfully wacky mother to help her bounce back. Of course, Ma’s recipe for mental recovery leaves much to be desired. And after Rosie discovers a painful family secret, hidden behind years of lies, she must set out to find herself and what really matters in life.
Along the way, Rosie is surprised to find help from Mickey Hamilton, a.k.a. Ham, who is kind, generous, and has a great butt to match. If only Rosie can overlook the fact that he’s nicknamed after the meat section at the local supermarket he manages. Milton, one of Rosie’s endearing mentally challenged clients--and Ham’s employee--also becomes a source of comfort along the way, always ready to defend “Miss Plow’s” honor and warm her heart, even as it’s breaking. And can a twenty-five-year-old punk office assistant with hair like candy corn really become Rosie’s new best friend? As she moves along the twisted road to self-discovery, Rosie finds happiness, acceptance, and even love – though none of it in the places she’d expected.
With laugh-out-loud scenes seamlessly interspersed among gut-wrenching moments of heartache, Starting Out Sideways is a unique and utterly delightful novel that will make you laugh, cry, and remember what’s truly important in life.
Customer Reviews:
Learning to Rejoice in 'Plan B' .......2007-07-17
What a hoot... As I read, I wished I were a character in the book and could yell "Rosie! - WAKE UP!". Like Stephanie Plum, Rosie is a lovingly flawed heroine, helping others and blundering through her personal life, struggling and juggling with the lemons life hands her.
Rosie has 'Plan B' thrust upon her - time after time; and happily discovers that 'Plan B' was where she needed to be all along.
Ms. Mitchell's wonderfully oddball characters all love Rosie - but on their own terms, and in ways Rosie struggles to appreciate. I can't wait to see who plays Marcie, Rosie's cute, kinky, caring, and all-seeing supervisor in the movie!
Great book.......2007-07-16
This is a wonderful book. Funny yet also insightful into the modern world of love, divorce and starting over. I just loved it.
more than chick lit.......2007-07-03
These characters are full of life, dimension, edges..they are beautifully developed and ring true. There are laugh out loud passages as well as poignant moments..highly recommended!
Great Summer Reading!.......2007-06-30
"Sideways" is a wonderful story, perfect for summer leisure reading. Roseanna Plow and the other characters are so well developed, you will think they are people in your neighborhood. The story is as captivating as the cast. Nothing goes as you might expect!
Delightful Read.......2007-06-22
What a fun book! My book group chose this novel and it led to a wonderful discussion full of laughter, but also personal sharing. It had a bit of everything - humor, sadness, conflict, loss and happiness. The characters were believable (all) and tremendously likeable (most!) We will definitely be reading Ms. Mitchell's next novel.

Book Description
Going Nowhere Sideways follows the life of Molly Williams through landmark experiences, from young adulthood and Woodstock to middle age and the fall of the Berlin wall. In between come marriages, lovers--both male and female, motherhood, and artistic exploration. Journal extracts provide information about Molly's inner life and her self-exploration.
Customer Reviews:
FANTASTIC... tender, infuriating and completely human........1999-08-20
Molly takes you on a journey of memories long ago obscured by the hype and break neck pace of the digital age. A time when the country was in turmoil and everyone was trying to find a deeper meaning and context to the chaos. Molly, as our tour guide, is intelligent, sincere and on a personal quest to live a "useful" life. While it takes her 20 years to figure it out, it seems all too brief for this reader who couldn't put the book down and longs for the next installment. Molly's tale is at once tender, intelligent, at times infuriating, and completely human. I loved every word! Leigh Curran is an exceptional writer... poetic and profound.
Human, fun, moving and so, so true.......1999-08-03
I did not know what to expect when I picked up this book for reading on a business trip. I got so involved in the richly real characters that I could hardly tear myself away to go to meetings. I finished it on a plane, and I sat reading til the plane cleared out because I still had a couple of pages to go. The book is beautifully constructed, with an unpredictable, almost musical flow, and the characters will stay with me for life.
This is one of those "best friend" books you tell your best friends about, as I have done. There are moments and images that have stayed with me for the months since I read it.
If you came to consciousness in the '60s, or know someone who did, revisit the times and how they grew into a gentle wisdom in the '90s. I thank Leigh Curran for this beautiful work.
it's so good I don't want to finish it.......1999-06-18
I was invited to a book signing by the author having known her casually many years ago. Aware of a play she had written I went, bought the book had it signed, gave Leigh Curran a hug and left. Having reading material at home that had to be attended to I left it in my car to be picked up when I had a few spare moments. Now almost three quarters of the way through I find her narrative so moving that I am portioning off the remainder so that I won't come to the end too quickly.
A real healing force! I relished every word........1999-06-16
This book is involving, clear, passionate - so personal, fascinating, heart-breaking, heart-warming, illuminating and ultimately so inspiring. And fun. I was in tears and stitches and relished every word!

Customer Reviews:
Totally - Totally a page-turner.......1999-08-04
I read this book from cover to cover in a little over two days. I was completely and totally engrossed by it. Skene has captured all the flavor of the period and all the nuances of the people involved. This is a book with real heart and soul in it. I'm looking forward to his next one! I loved it!!
A beautiful book........1999-07-15
Gordon Skene has written a beautiful book, full of fascinating, true-to-life characters, wry humor and evocative descriptions of Los Angeles and San Francisco, especially the sections that take place in the 1960's. I was enthralled from beginning to end, and was left feeling hungry for more. Overall, it's a page-turner, a good fun read that I'm passing on to friends.
A completely wonderful look at Los Angeles in the '60's.......1999-06-03
This was what Los Angeles must've been like in the 1960's. Having grown up on the east coast, I heard about L.A. and all the stories from friends who spent time there - this is as close to those stories as it comes. The book breathes and feels and tastes the period and is wonderfully well written. It's the best I've read this year!
The Best look at life in L.A. in the 60's!.......1999-05-09
A completely engrossing book that takes place in Los Angeles (and later San Francisco) in the late 1960's and 1970's - it's a completely realistic look at life in L.A. at the time and has the extra added bonus of some three- dimensional characters that reminded me of at least a dozen people I knew. It was a total page-turner. I absolutely recommend it!
