Great resource for designers who deal with the print aspect of thier projects. Good material to read through and very helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I'd expected........2007-01-29

This book wasn't what I'd expected from the reviews. It is largely a reference guide and less of a learning resource. Definitions are presented clearly, but then the application of things wasn't fully explained. For someone new to print publishing, this isn't a 'how-to' guide. It's more of a reference material and to discover new things about print publishing you may not have known about. I would recommend this tentatively to anyone who wants to bulk up their reference library on print publishing, but wouldn't recommend it to a absolute beginner wanting to know more about print publishing.

5 out of 5 stars Information a plus.......2007-01-09

Great in detail book for Graphic Communications I used it in one of my classes. Learned a great deal in it. Thanks

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2006-08-07

The reality is that lots of graphic designers don't have formal design training, which can result in a problematic lack of production and printing knowledge. This book is easy to read (in a day), thoughtfully illustratrated, and covers the most important productino and printing issues that a designer should be aware of.

The book is really good about inustructing the designer on what they should know and then giving the reader a list of questions/issues to discuss with their printer when the matter is outside the domain of the designer. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars New to print? You need this book.......2006-03-06

I know a teeny tiny bit of print. Spot colours - hmm I did know that one, but since I don't do much print (or haven't til this year) I was always at a loss when it came ready for the printer. This book is an essential guide for the non print designer.

Terms, project proofing, even what a colour bar is (you know that strip of colour on the prepress and press proofs?) - it's all covered. There is a world of difference between making something for screen and print. If you have ever had someone ask to have a business card made, or a more complex print piece, and you usually export a 300 dpi TIFF and hope for the best this book helps take you further. Every introductory design course, not just a print course, should be covering this book to ensure that designers are well versed in all the verbage, processes and production issues that print demands.

A great chapter in this book covers project management which most will not think of to be in a book like this. The added value of having this chapter allows one who is not familiar with print to understand ones responsibilities to the client, the printer and themselves. Do not waste time creating something the client may love and the printer will not deliver - at your quoted budget anyway. It all intertwines and knowing what questions to ask is the key to a better project. And don't forget that File Checkoff List.

2 out of 5 stars WAY TO HARD TO READ, DISAPPOINTED .......2007-10-02

This book has a ton of great information, and has been very helpful. But I have to agree that it is filled with typos, which makes them look bad. BUT the HUGE problem with this book it the text is too freaking small. These
idiot 's should have known this being graphic designers/printers, it is SO hard to read. They made the text at about a 9 or 10 point. And no, I am not farsighted, or really old and can't see, I am a young graphic designer, but find it VERY hard to read this text.

Because of this I wouldn't reccommend this book, find a different book that knows how to spell, and knows not to make the reading text a 9 point

4 out of 5 stars Instructor's Review - A Print Production Tech Manual.......2007-06-04

I teach first & second year multimedia and design at a community college. Following are my thoughts on this book.

Pros:
Summaries- The sidebar summaries and callouts are truly excellent. Often, there are accompanying illustrations that are "worth a thousand words".

Depth of information- Overall, there is a *lot* of information here. No punches are pulled when it's presented, either. As far as I can tell, the information is accurate.

Images- The illustrations and photos used are of excellent quality. There are images of magnified printed pages from different printing process that are crystal clear.

Cons:
Typos- There is at least one typo per page, often combined with a grammatical error as well. 99% of the time you can figure out what it means with little to no trouble.

European Conventions used inconsistently- Most of the time, the authors used North American conventions...except when they don't. It's a great idea to give info on both North American *and* European conventions (A4 vs. 8.5" x 11" paper, pixels per inch vs. centimeters per inch), but the authors do not always clearly delineate which convention is used.

Overall, this book reads like a detailed technical manual. It is *not* a design manual with splashy sidebars about finding inspiration. It is *not* for the novice designer. The publisher needs to get it proofed a time or three. Despite its shortcomings, I use it in the course of building lectures for my class constantly. The only other book I've seen get this in-depth is the Int'l Paper Pocket Pal.

This review is for the second edition of the book.

1 out of 5 stars Jam packed with typo's and grammatical errors.......2007-01-20

Yes ok , this book may be full of useful information for graphic designers or students of graphic design but the thing that really miffed me is that I spent $80 on this book and come to read it and find that virtually every page has AT LEAST one typo or obvious gramatical error in it. As a student of graphic design (who really cant afford an $80 book) this really bugs me that so much emphasis is put on spell checking your work over and over to make sure there are no mistakes and then you buy a book all about graphic design and it's jam packed with typo's! How unproffessional is that?! And that is why I only give it one star. If you can get past the typo's and the gramatical errors that make the difficult subject matter even more difficult to digest then go ahead and get the book cos it will be worth it - but if so little effort was put into spell checking the book - it makes me wonder about the accuracy and the validity of the information contained.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-11-06

The book arrived timely and in good condition. Got my money's worth. Reliable seller.

5 out of 5 stars Info that a Designer who IS NOT a novice designer needs.......2006-01-29

If you are going into or even if you are in the field of Graphic Design you should get this book. It is very informative. Perhaps if you are a NOVICE designer you don't need it. If you are a design student this book will be very helpful for you before you get into a real job.

2 out of 5 stars Information good - quality of book poor.......2005-08-19

This was a text book for a college class. The content of the book is a good introduction to the subject. As a design student, I feel I benefited from reading it. But, the book itself is cheaply produced. 100 pages, only a few black and white images of poor quality. (Actually, they look like poor photocopies.) The cost of the book is more expensive than many of my other text books, which were printed on quality paper and included lots of full color, photographic images.

There have to be other books with similar content that are better value for the money.

            Book Description

There are a number of books out there about Adobe Acrobat and PDF, but none focuses entirely on PDF as it relates to print production—until now. In the high-end print production environment, PDF files must be created for a variety of uses: screen (for soft proofing and correction cycles), print (for digital printing), and press. This book explores the problems, solutions, and techniques specific to using PDF in prepress and print production.

You will learn the history and evolution of PDF and the Adobe Acrobat software family before exploring setup and PostScript basics. However, the meat of this book is in the how-to process, as it offers step-by-step instruction on fixing PDF problems that plague print production facilities, as well as specific procedures for creating print-perfect PDF files using the standard Acrobat software tools.

Additionally, an entire chapter has been devoted to answering common PDF questions taken directly from GATF training programs and seminars. All information in this book has been thoroughly tested in the GATF labs, so you can be assured that it is reliable.

THE COMPLETE BACKYARD NATURE ACTIVITY BOOK

You can tell that Robin Michal Koontz, the author-illustrator of this book, has personal knowledge of the wildlife subjects she writes about. Each topic, from butterflies to birds to bats, gives children a wealth of information and plenty of projects to choose from. For example, kids can make a hummingbird feeder from an empty plastic bottle or draw a "family tree" of all the animals that use a tree for food or shelter. The sidebars provide fascinating information, such as the fact that many birds pick up ants and tuck them under their wings, so that the ants can deter lice, mites, and other annoying pests. I highly recommend this book - parents as well as kids can learn from it.

              Book Description

From the port city of Duluth to Grand Portage National Monument near the Canadian border, the North Shore of Lake Superior is a favorite travel destination, popular for its breathtaking natural beauty, abundant outdoor recreation choices, and rich history. In this comprehensive and chatty guidebook, a longtime resident looks at the best places to eat, drink, play, and relax.

Nina's North Shore Guide covers accommodations, outdoor activities, dining, and shopping, with sections describing area history and shipwrecks, the natural environment, and recreational options. This second edition has been completely updated (including Internet addresses for many of the North Shore attractions and lodgings), and a more convenient format makes this guidebook better than ever. Graced throughout with beautiful woodcuts by Minnesota illustrator Betsy Bowen (Antler, Bear, Canoe), Nina's North Shore Guide is so complete it will delight even the most frequent visitors to the region with new discoveries.

"This book accomplishes the near impossible: it's attractive, well-organized, just about as complete as it could be, and at the same time it's small enough to be quite portable. And did I mention readability? Nina's personality shines through, making it a fun read as well." Minnesota Monthly

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A witty and comprehensive guide to Minnesota's North Shore.......1999-08-07

Nina's book goes far beyond the "where to eat, where to shop, where to stay" standard of so many guides. It talks about the shipwrecks of Lake Superior, the geological landscape, rivers and waterfalls, outdoor activities (including curling and watching the stars) and where to locate the nearest liquor store! It is obvious that she loves her neighborhood, and this book helps you to explore more than the surface. A must read for anyone headed up Highway 61 - and a great gift for those who live there.

4 out of 5 stars Funnny, well written, and very complete........1999-05-26
