Book Description
This concise and comprehensive overview of nonlinear processes addresses all those interested in natural sciences and mathematics. It also contains a beautifully illustrated color insert easily accessible to the interested layperson. Thus it is suitable for leisure reading and also for an introductory (under)graduate course in nonlinear physics. Both well-established and more recent new results are discussed, outlining the relation between classical aspects of nonlinear physics and important current problems like the birth of chaos in simple deterministic systems and the emergence of order out of disorder and turbulence. Keywords: Chaos, fractals, strange attractors, turbulence.

Book Description
The structures of physics, in general, are studied by using simplified geometry on objects that are actually irregular and highly complex. The complex morphology and dynamics of many phenomena are lost when this is done. Benoît B. Mandelbrot, author of the preface, has spent 20 years studying the phenomena required to model these structures in all their dimensions. These structures are called fractals, and are characterized by their invariance of scale: each figure is composed of figures which are virtually identical and which are in turn composed of virtually identical figures, and so on indefinitely. Fractals are the result of 70 years of research in many fields; what they reveal has pertinence to physics of materials, mechanics of fluids, functional anatomy, plant morphology, geomorphology, astrophysics, and other disciplines. This book highlights the structures of fractals in related disciplines: turbulence, chaos, fracture, percolation, diffusion fronts, aggregation, phase transitions, particle trajectories. The author describes in detail the dynamic aspects of transport phenomena in the field of fractals. Intended for students of physics and chemistry in their second or third year, this book is also addressed to researchers and engineers interested in the trends of contemporary physics as they relate to real applications. An extensive bibliography directs the reader to additional material on specific topics.

Book Description
Concisely and clearly written, this book provides a self-contained introduction to the basic concepts of fractals and demonstrates their use in a range of topics in condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. The first part outlines different fractal structures observed in condensed matter. The main part of the book is dedicated to the dynamical behaviour of fractal structures, including anomalous and percolating systems. The concept of multifractals is illustrated for the metal-insulator quantum phase transition. The authors emphasize the unified description of these different dynamic problems, thus making the book accessible to readers who are new to the field.

Book Description
Originally conceived some thirty years ago in the context of quantum electrodynamics, renormalization methods have progressively developed into an indispensable analytical tool used in widely varying domains of physics and applied mathematics, such as
- phase transitions and critical phenomena
- dynamical systems and chaos
- developed turbulence
- fractal structures and complex systems
- percolation
- polymer physics
- diffusion in disordered media
- measure theory and stochastic processes.
By explaining the fundamental principles of renormalization theory such as scale invariance and universality which lie behind all the technical variations, this book aims to guide the reader to a more unified understanding of todays physics. The book is based on a very accessible main text, supplemented by several more specialized sections; it is intended for graduate students and for researchers who are seeking an introduction to a new area of electrodynamics or a general overview of the physical phenomena to which renormalization methods are applied.

To summarize the plot of Dead Famous would be to spoil it, since O'Connell keeps revealing it layer by layer as you go along--a daring technique, and a rewarding one if you're a patient reader. Suffice it to say that the story involves a seemingly unstoppable serial killer; a beautiful hunchback with tragedy in her past; a radio shock-jock who helps the killer find his victims; an extremely mean house cat; a gloomy veteran cop drinking himself into oblivion; and, at the center of it all, NYPD detective Kathy Mallory, who returns here for her seventh outing. Mallory (don't call her Kathy) is one of the strangest, most intriguing series heroines in crime fiction: a former street waif who's brilliant and gorgeous, but also sociopathic, manipulative, and obsessive-compulsive.
No formulaic cop thriller, Dead Famous is instead a crime tale that focuses on its quirky, often outre characters. There isn't a lot of conventional suspense. Yet near the end, the story gathers tremendous narrative momentum and rises to a real tragic power. O'Connell's quirky writing style and approach aren't for everyone, but her fans--old and new--will find much to appreciate here. --Nicholas H. Allison
Book Description
Jurors on a controversial trial are being killed off one by one, and only Detective Kathleen Mallory can figure out why. But the FBI has told her to lay off and leave it to the Feds. That's never stopped Mallory before.
Customer Reviews:
Okay book.......2007-10-03
To me Kathy Mallory series are hit or miss and this is the latter one.The book did not keep me going and I had hard time finish reading it.
Another Mallory great one..........2007-09-23
Carol O'connell writes another terrific Mallory story. She has to follow the clues before the last juror is dead.
Very hard going.......2006-11-16
This book jumps around so much at the beginning that I finally had to abandon it. Perhaps she is an acquired taste, but my first thought (having never read anything of hers before) was that she was not a good writer. The scenes in the first three chapters are totally disjointed. I'm sure she was going somewhere, but I did not have the patience to find out.
O'Connell Comes on Strong.......2006-04-17
I am a huge O'Connell fan and after being disappointed with "Crime School" I wanted to say I'm delighted that she is more than back in stride with "Dead Famous." I was worried that the huge popularity of Mallory would force O'Connell into a corner...not being allowed the freedom to weave her wonderful stories in the way she knows best (don't forget the gripping non-Mallory "Judas Child" ). But by switching the focus to Riker in this novel, she has let her readers have another white-knuckle ride through a fabulous plot with a bit of Mallory and Charles blended in. She creates the most complex, fascinating characters. You learn so much more about Riker and truly are drawn to mysterious Johanna. It is a very intense, rich and emotional story.
not so famous.......2006-03-13
she writes better than this. this book dragged for more pages than it should have.Carol kulowski

Customer Reviews:
My new favorite writing book.......2007-09-07
It's funny, it's true, it's irreverent, and it's one of the best new books on writing and publishing available. (Literary snobs won't agree, but who asked them?) I've got three shelves crammed with writing books, and while most are pretty good, they all offer the same safe advice. Gore stresses the importance of marketing and promoting yourself and getting your stuff OUT THERE -- even if it means self-publishing your poems on a copy machine or posting a humor column in the PTA newsletter. While Gore's clear, take-no-prisoners style will appeal mostly to the young and the hip, I'm recommending this book to everyone in my writing workshops, no matter how old (or un-hip) they are. -Cindy La Ferle
A warning and some advice.......2007-08-18
If obscenity bothers you, look elsewhere. Better yet, do yourself a favor and get over it - this book is outrageously good! It's like having coffee or a beer with the kind of friend who loves you enough to kick you out of the rut you've dragged yourself into. Ariel Gore writes with bold, active passion. If you take it to heart, How to Become a Famous Writer Before You're Dead will teach you to do the same.
Not your typical writers guide!.......2007-07-30
Ariel Gore's "How to Become a Famous Writer Before You're Dead" is not your typical writing handbook. Filled with funny antecdotes, sometimes subversive humor, and an overall supportive tone, Gore has managed to write a book that, should we follow her advice, can only lead to success in writing.
Even if you have no aspirations to writerly famedom, Gore's book is a must read. Gore's book includes a mix of straightforward advice with interviews of other writers and stories -- both funny and serious -- from her own writing life. She is at once witty and intelligent without being smug or "holier than thou."
I found Gore's book insipired and have taken much of her advice to heart and I encourage you to do the same. If nothing else, you'll have fun reading this book! The layout ranges from how-to chapters to interviews to advice columns. The only way you could possibly be bored reading this book is if you skip everything between the first and last pages, and even then, you'll still find something interesting! Read it...then go write Ariel Gore a thank you note for her hard work and her willingness to share her experiences with us all!
Another Ariel Gore Hit..........2007-07-29
I've loved Gore's work since the very first Hip Mama book, when I was pregnant with my first child. Gore's release of How to Become a Famous Writer dovetailed with the start of my freelance writing career (Hey, Ariel Gore - are you following me?).
This book is just like her other titles: irreverent, funny, and down-to-earth. But it's on a topic that's relevant to anyone with the writing bug, not just fans of her previous titles. She talks about the more unconventional ways of publishing, including chapbooks, zines, and self-published books. With this book, you'll be grabbing Fame by the horns and wrasslin' it into becoming your pet.
Of coure, we can't all write just like Ariel Gore, which is unfortunate. It would definitely increase our chances of famous writerhood.
If you want to be both informed AND entertained, check out How to Become a Famous Writer Before You're Dead.
This little book is a delight........2007-06-09
Got a postcard at school advertising a book on journalism. Before I tossed it (I'm retiring -- what do I need another book on journalism for?) I turned it over. There was a picture of Ariel Gore's book, with a brief blurb. I was intrigued and ordered it via amazon when I got home. What a gift to myself it turned out to be. I needed this boost. I've wanted to write for years, and resigned myself to the comments written on students' papers and my own online forum. After reading just the first couple of chapters, I know there are no excuses. I consider this book a godsend. Fun to read, beautifully written, wise and wonderful. Thank you, Ariel Gore!

Book Description
One house, ten contestants, thirty cameras, and forty microphones. Everybody knows the rules—total strangers are forced to live together while the rest of the country watches them do it. However, on day 27, one of the housemates is killed on live TV. Who is the murderer? How did they manage to kill under the constant gaze of the television cameras? Why did they do it? And who will be next?
Customer Reviews:
A bit outdated. Low rating because I don't like the genre in general.......2007-07-31
The reality TV parody went old years ago (and note that this is from 2001 when Survivor was running its second Australia season). And I really failed to see the other aspects of funniness too. It only touches the surface of TV culture in ways that are completely obvious and predictable at least today.
But then on the other hand, I have difficulties liking the whole "outrageously funny" genre in general as well. They read like a crappy stand up act with lots of meaningless filler between the totally unconnected funny insights/random events or whatever. There's less criteria to make your audience laugh on the cues, so you'll free to take a bit more personal approach and write whatever you like, which is of course a good thing, but no matter how many pages the works go on, a majority of the content and sentences will remain totally useless and even seem forced to me which really discourages to continue reading in general.
Maybe it's just me but having to fill at least 200-300 pages with content seems to be a seriously damaging requirement to the humor format. TV and internet are doing it a lot better. Either you should really try to build events and characters instead of making them have random crazy characteristics or just admit that maybe we don't need plot elements at all and go for something completely different. The alternative where plot equals page filler and isn't really worth anything in itself just doesn't work. I mean it's literature. It should try to be a bit bigger.
So I was really looking forward here to the whodunit theme and to the reality TV stereotypes (ok, you can't get much depth out of them but at least they're more than random), but really, it was the same old crap. Nonpersonal. Nonhuman. Nonambitious. Nonbig. If I can't even make myself comfortable with a book, only bounce on its scattered surface content which never really forms into anything but keeps on turning anyway, quite randomly, until in the end you find out it's all the same, it's hard to really enjoy it. Absurdness is great but it doesn't really in itself carry on a reading experience.
Lovers and Haters of Big Brother, this book is for you!.......2007-04-13
Whether you love Big Brother, or hate Big Brother, you will love this take on reality housebound shows.
With ridiculously over the top house mates, a power hungry producer, ditsy host and a murder mystery to boot, this book is laugh out load funny.
Ben Elton fans will not be dissapointed.
Comedy meets social critique.......2007-04-01
I'm one of those people who think you can't go far wrong with Ben Elton - his sarcasm and biting wit never fail to hit the spot.
This time, he takes on the Big Brother / reality TV phenomenon and really rips into it, creating not only an excellent social commentary but a brilliant murder mystery as well.
A page turner and a very funny read
Characters sympathetic and unsympathetic.......2006-07-05
Elton is masterful at making the reader like characters who do not like each other--or wouldn't, if they knew what we know...
Really funny book. If there's a moral to the story, it's that with reality shows, the only way to win is not to play the game.
Terrific mystery and satire.......2006-06-27
This is one of the two best whodunits I've read that was written after 1990 (the other is "Diamond Dust" by Peter Lovesey). The comparison to Christie's "And Then There Were None" is obvious, but I agree with the reviewer who notes that this more closely conjures up the style of early Ellery Queen novels like "The Egyptian Cross Mystery" and "The Siamese Twin Mystery". I've always found the early Queen novels to be some of the most entertaining mysteries ever written, and it's good to feel their flavor again. The satire on our over-the top pop culture is hilarious, but the mystery is excellent by any standard. I'm recommending this to every mystery fan I know.
