Book Description
This book completes the physical foundations and experimental techniques described in volume 1 with an updated review of the accessory equipment indispensable in molecular beam experiments. It extends the subject to cluster beams and beams of hyperthermal and subthermal energies. As in volume 1, a special effort is made to outline the physical foundations of the various experimental techniques. Hence this book is intended not only as a reference standard for researchers in the field, but also to bring the flavor of current molecular beam research to advanced undergraduates and graduate students and to enable them to gain a solid background in the field and its technique.

Book Description
Today, coupled-cluster (CC) theory has emerged as the most accurate, widely applicable approach for the correlation problem in molecules. Furthermore, the correct scaling of the energy and wavefunction with size (i.e. extensivity) recommends it for studies of polymers and crystals as well as molecules. CC methods have also paid dividends for nuclei, and for certain strongly correlated systems of interest in field theory.
In order for CC methods to have achieved this distinction, it has been necessary to formulate new, theoretical approaches for the treatment of a variety of essential quantities. These include properties and, particularly, analytical first derivatives (gradients) that readily provide the forces on the atoms in a molecule to facilitate searching potential energy surfaces for structures and transition states; second derivatives (Hessians) which indicate the type of extremum point and provide vibrational frequencies and intensities; excited, ionized, and electron attached states including their properties; multi-configurational reference functions to add important non-dynamic correlation; and relativistic effects.
This book addresses very recent work in each of the above topics in ten chapters written by leading experts in molecular CC theory. This is NOT a collection of reviews, but is, instead, forefront research explained in an unusually clear exposition. Each chapter presents new results and formulations that offer another step toward providing the next generation of powerful CC solutions.
The gap that often exists between text books and research can be more of a chasm in highly technical fields like CC theory, but this volume helps to fill the void, as it provides a sequel to a graduate level course in CC theory and many-electron methods. Essentially all current directions for new research are well represented in the authoritative articles.

Book Description
Mesoscopic physics is a fast growing discipline with countless potential applications. Understanding the science of mesoscopic materials with unique physical and chemical properties is important for the design of nanodevices and materials with unique properties. Clusters as mesoscopic particles represent an intermediate state of matter between single atoms and solid material. This book deals with the properties of clusters in matrixes, on surfaces, and in vacuum. The formation and application of cluster-based materials is discussed. This book will appeal to physicists, chemists, materials researchers, and advanced students.

Book Description
This book is the proceedings of an International Conference on Many-Particle Spectroscopy of Atoms, Molecules, and Surfaces, held 26--29 July 2000, in Halle (Saale), Germany. In a many-particle coincidence experiment one measures the spectrum of a few particles simultaneously emitted from a probe. The emission process is usually stimulated by an external perturbation, such as the impact of an electron, photon, or ion beam. The recorded spectrum carries important information on a variety of material properties, such as optical and magnetic characteristics. In particular, coincidence studies yield detailed information on the many-body nature of the matter. Correspondingly, many-body theoretical concepts are required to interpret the experimental findings and to direct future experimental research. This book gives a snapshot of the present status of multi-particle coincidence studies from both theoretical and experimental points of view. It also includes selected topical review articles that highlight the recent achievements and the power of coincident studies. It covers theoretical and experimental coincidence on single and double ionisation and/or excitations induced by electrons, positrons, photons, and ions. The systems under investigation range from a single atom to clusters and surfaces.

Book Description
Cluster physics is the foundation of the increasingly important field of nanotechnology. Clusters, ranging in size from a few to many millions of atoms, constitute a fascinating field of research in physics, chemistry and materials science. They are formed by most of the elements of the Periodic Table, and the types of bonding and the resultant clusters are equally as varied. This book introduces atomic clusters, ranging from weakly-bonded clusters of argon to strongly-bonded carbon clusters and metal nano-particles. It includes worked examples to enable lecturers and students to gauge their understanding and progress. Atomic and Molecular Clusters describes the experimental generation, detection and interrogation of clusters and theoretical approaches developed to aid understanding of their physical properties. It classifies clusters according to their bonding types and gives examples of present and possible future applications of clusters in electronic, optical and magnetic devices.

Customer Reviews:
Close to home.......2007-03-17
An enjoyable read; the stories are well-written and a perfect length for a little reality check in between a mom's busy day. I especially liked it because the setting is familiar ground to me (both in regards to raising little kids and in the geographic locale).
Diary of a Mother.......2006-02-17
This book reminds me of my four awesome daughters when they were young. They were very close in age and life was hectic, but wonderful!
Ms Hohlbaum paints a picture of parenting that is true to life, inspirational and humorous. The book is so interesting, it is hard to put it down.
I will definitely pass this entertaining and heart-warming book to by three daughters who have children of their own.
Francine Larson: Co-Author of "Character Keys to a Bright Future."
Brings back memories.......2004-09-18
As grandmother to a toddler, I am constantly being reminded of the day-to-day trials and joys of being mom to a preschooler. Ms. Hohlbaum's book cemented those memories and gave me some new potential disasters (adventures?) to contemplate. I plan to share this book with my daughter, so she'll remember to laugh when everything goes wrong.
Ms. Hohlbaum's writing style is clear and entertaining. I finished this book in no time at all. Busy moms will find time to read it in the bathroom, in doctors' office waiting rooms, and in the car waiting for school to let out or sports practice to end.
What every mother should know before they become a mother.......2004-08-21
It was over all too soon. I laughed, cried, and laughed some more remembering my own children's antics. I was sorely disappointed when it ended before I was ready for it, silently begging for more.
It's a gift for any newly married couple, any couple thinking about having children, men who think they know, mothers in the throes of their own epiphanies, grandmothers, premarital counselors as a job tool, and single friends who don't understand.
Honest, Funny--Delightful!.......2004-07-27
In an age of parenting experts, Christine Hohlbaum has written a delightful collection of stories from the real trenches of motherhood. Mothers (and fathers!) will see themselves throughout Diary of a Mother; it's honest, funny, and wonderfully universal.
