Excellent graduate-level introduction to particle physics.......2006-05-18
The typesetting and diagrams are humble, but this book delivers big. It was, for me, a superb refresher on real nuts-and-bolts particle physics. The book is a little dated: some of the unknowns, like the mass of the Top quark, are now known. Despite that, the content wears well.
It is absolutely essential to have a background in simple Legrangian (& Hamiltonian) mechanics, and an advanced undergraduate intro to quantum mechanics course already well in hand. Also necessary is advanced science/engineering math, which would have come naturally in the quantum mechanics course.
Kane leads the reader through the standard model with smoothe explication, and presents mathematical derivation of many -- perhaps all -- crucial predictions of the standard model. His derivations have the merit of being in greatly simplified form, after which he states the "real" answer, which is always close. Best of all, the math had no errors that I could find. Wow.
This is a great text for a first-year graduate course in particle physics, but will require occasional in-class updates by the instructor.
Not for the professional, and not for the lay either........2004-02-05
My background is electrical engineering, so I'm not a physicist or a lay person. I thought this book would be perfect, but it wasn't. It started out well enough, and I was following along, relying on my knowledge of electrophysics, and Maxwell's equations. But I was soon in trouble, as Kane began to rely on a mathematical operator, the Lagrangian, one which I hadn't any experience. Thinking I had forgotten something, I went looking for it, but it wasn't in any of my old math books. OK, I'll just follow along, I thought, not trying to verify the results in my own mind. But soon I was in trouble, as Mr. Kane began just listing equation after equation, with little or no explanatory text to tie it all together. After a time, my interest waned; this was very frustrating, since I was tired of reading "popular physics" books, with their unsatisfying explanations, but I knew I wasn't ready for graduate level quantum physics texts since my physics background is not that sophisiticated. This book began with promise, but ended without its fulfillment.
I don't know what the answer is, except to warn readers to be versed in the Lagrangian before they get started.
Great Intuition.......2000-07-12
Great ! Great ! Great ! This book is all about physics. The real physics... The physics is not lying in the trace theorems or in other technicalities of Quantum Field Theory but in simple, straightforward, physical arguments that arise from the basic principles of relativity and quantum mechanics. And Kane's book is all about that. As J.J Sakurai once said, a student may be a leading expert in calculating state of the art cross sections but if he/she cannot answer the simple questions, quickly and easily, then all is lost. Kane gives the reader the ability to quickly come up with answers for questions like "what do I expect the width for this particle to be", or "taking into acount this symmetry how do I expect this cross section to behave". As Fermi said, dont start the long calculation if you dont have a quick and dirty first result that will guide you along the more rigorous and exact calculation. So this book is all about that and physicists from all backgrounds will be able to follow it. I think that the book can serve excelently as an introductory graduate course before the hifh energy student moves to the more technical Field Theory books. In my opinion it is a disaster to jump into a rigorous Quantum Field Theory book before grasping the big picture and understanding why the heck all the pain is needed for the long theoretical calculations. And Kane's book serves this purpose. I am a graduate student at Stony Brook in experimental heavy ion physics and I spent some gratifying evenings going through the pages of the book. After the reading of this book interested readers in particle physics should also consider the books by Chris Quigg and also the classic Halzen - Martin book. The book touches upon all aspects of the standard model. I strongly suggest it !
Excellent, very readable intro to the Standard Model.......1999-10-28
Particularly good are the first 8 chapters introducing gauge theories and the Standard Model. This isn't a field theory text - Kane doesn't introduce spin sums or trace theorems so he never fully calculates a process; instead, he relies on dimensional analysis to provide approximate results. As a high energy theory student, I found this to be a drawback, but I guess that's what Peskin's book is for. Also, there are a fair number of minus signs and indices incorrect throughout the book (nothing serious, just a little annoying).

Decent text, unacceptable number of solutions errors.......2006-11-10
The text is fairly straightforward and example problems are very helpful. The multitude of end-of-chapter problems are helpful as well, but the problem solutions in the back of the book have a particularly high number of errors. With most science texts, one might expect an error here or there, generally one or two errors per book, but in this book I find one or two (sometimes more) errors per chapter. Of course, I'm talking about solutions; I haven't discovered any errors in the text itself. My other qualm is that the end-of-chapter equations list excludes some important equations, requiring unnecessary digging back through the chapter.
I give this book three stars, though, because the quality of text is good; if it weren't for the solutions errors, I'd give it four stars. Among the physics books I've used in this and previous classes, this book is the easiest to learn from. Buy it used, wait for a new edition, or be sure you have a professor who realizes what the errors are.

Good book if a suppliment web site is used.......2002-12-12
This book is a good introduction to modern physics in terms of relativity, particle-wave theories, atomic theories, cosmology, etc. ...
Poorly Written.......2001-11-01
This is perhaps the worst introductory physics book I have encountered as a student. Many of the problems are poorly worded and the text does not contain sufficient information to perform many of the calculations. I would suggest learning from Schaum's Outline Series and low cost books (Dover publications) instead of this mockery.

Book Description
This book reviews the current state of knowledge of neutrino masses and the related
question of neutrino oscillations. After an overview of the theory of neutrino masses and
mixings, detailed accounts are given of the laboratory limits on neutrino masses,
astrophysical and cosmological constraints on those masses, experimental results on
neutrino oscillations, the theoretical interpretation of those results, and theoretical
models of neutrino masses and mixings. The book concludes with an examination of the
potential of long-baseline experiments. This is an essential reference text for workers in
elementary-particle physics, nuclear physics, and astrophysics.

Book Description
Classical Mechanics is a clear introduction to the subject, combining a user-friendly style with an authoritative approach, whilst requiring minimal prerequisite mathematics - only elementary calculus and simple vectors are presumed. The text starts with a careful look at Newton's Laws, before applying them in one dimension to oscillations and collisions. More advanced applications - including gravitational orbits, rigid body dynamics and mechanics in rotating frames - are deferred until after the limitations of Newton's inertial frames have been highlighted through an exposition of Einstein's Special Relativity. The examples given throughout are often unusual for an elementary text, although they are made accessible through discussion and diagrams. Complete revision summaries are given at the end of each chapter, together with problems designed to be both illustrative and challenging.
Features:
* Comprehensive introduction to classical mechanics and relativity
* Many novel examples, e.g. stability of the universe, falling cats, crickets bats and snooker
* Includes many problems with numerical answers
* Revision notes at the end of each chapter

Book Description
Thousands of fans agree-Cosmic Banditos has been out of print for way too long. So here it is, back by popular demand: A.C. Weisbecker's rollicking novel of high times and hard times-in which he hilariously chronicles the adventures of a group of pot-smoking, number-crunching banditos-in-hiding.
Customer Reviews:
Funniest book ever! Read it........2006-10-22
I admit, I have never read a book which made me laugh as hard as this book did. Let's see... "I grabbed a banana and held it up. 'What are bananas made of?' The old Indian licked his lips. 'Banana stuff,' he replied. This was more or less what I'd hoped he would say. 'And what is banana stuff made of,' I inquired smugly. The old Indian's response to this question took me by surprise. 'The Great Spirit,' he answered without hesitation." Well, I have to say that his answer took me by surprise as well! I just can't say enough how ridiculously fun to read this book. Amazon have to put "guaranteed laugh or your money back" to market this book.
His books will put you in a TRANCE of hilarious adventure.......2006-09-27
Allan Weisbecker is hands down one of the most captivating writers of our time. This book will will not only cause you extreme stomach cramps from laughing so much....it will rip your brain out and throw it to the cosmos....transporting you into oblivion....never to return.....to your own mundane reality. You will then have to read IN SEARCH OF CAPTAIN ZERO to continue your experience within his uniquely hilarious mind and then read his latest masterpiece CAN'T YOU GET ALONG WITH ANYONE. This one I read in a 59 hour marathon ( with a 2 hour catnap in my lazyboy which was unintentional because....) I literally....COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN.....He lets it all hang out....ditched by his USA publishers because they didn't have the balls to publish it. You can only get it on his web site...aweisbecker dotCOM ....Trust me....you won't be dissappointed.
laugh out loud.......2006-07-07
I read this for the first time on a plane trip to somewhere. Laughed out loud the entire book. Am reading again to get myself into the mood for his new book coming out this fall. Cannot wait - but in the spirit of the Don Juan law: anything that can go wrong already has and will be that way forever - so you never know. Some bandito may off him and steal the book before it comes out. If that doesn't make sense to you - you gotta read the book to know what it means. Weisbecker simply rocks.
Romp Roaring Novel.......2005-10-06
This book is great. It is the best comedy novel i have ever read and is easily my favorite book. They are even creating a movie based on the book. Check out the authors website [...] to find out more. His other book In Search of Captain Zero is just good, only its a differt gerne. Anyway this book is really a good read.
carlos castaneda meets hunter s. thompson.......2005-09-16
not bad, not great. an amusing read, very original in content.
Book Description
Late night shots ring out in tranquil Hermosa Beach, California, heralding the mysterious assassination of a nondescript pussycat. Will the trail lead to an enigmatic code hidden in the works of Leonardo Da Vinci? Will a breathless race through the streets of Los Angeles lead back to Hermosa, where an explosive truth, contemplated for centuries, is finally unveiled as the Formula for God - reconciling religion's compatibility with physics? Well, no to the first question, and as for the second question, well, I guess it's all a question of faith. Nevertheless, conquer your own fear and loathing of fake memoirs and take a wild ride with the most original voice to come along in years. Truth is stranger than fiction; so much so, that sometimes it has to be toned down and just called fiction.

Oddly familiar to a previous life..........2006-08-21
I can certainly relate to Python Bonkers... I'd create a pseudonym as well. This tale is frighteningly familiar to not only me, but to scores of beaten souls who have labored in an environment led by a King of Hubris. That "boss," what a dolt... we all know him well, at some point in our career we've all worked for him... or his kind. Thanks for the memories, but I'd just assume forget that part of my life.
The answer to life, the universe and everything?.......2006-08-02
The dedication in this book is: To Mother Nature (wink).
If you have read the book and understand this, then you will understand life, the universe and everything. Sort of. But that's the point, when you think some religion/philosophy/ideology has all the answers -- then that's when it has none of them.
In the small part of the book that mentions this stuff, the author claims it is something that he came up with in an hour or so -- bull. This is a carefully thought out presentation of something philosophers and physicists alike call Determinism and although not the theme around which the book revolves that's where it all leads.
I disagree that this book is anti-religious. All it's trying to say, I suppose, is that once people believe they have all the answers is about when they start aiming the jet plane for the skyscraper. Many people don't like to think about their relation to the physical world and when they do try to contemplate the big picture and life after death and all that business, for many, it is easier to just phone it in. So they stand in the back of their church or place of worship and think that they've got it covered, why bother to think about it any further? Then there are others who believe so deeply that they block out all other rational thought.
Religion does a lot of good but when people start thinking only in terms of absolutes then they figure that they have all the answers and everybody else is simply wrong. That was the point that I got from it.
So when he brings in physics it's just a way to take a physical view of existence to its extreme. Where does it end? How did it begin? What's it all about? That kind of thing. It's just something fun to ponder. Hell, every religion plugs in these answers every day, and that seems to be okay with many who swallow it whole. For all the rest, rational thinking, even in a comical, crazy novel, should not get so easily dismissed.
A freaking skyrocket Babies.......2006-05-11
A freaking skyrocket across the sky (or your mind). Madness. Wackiness. And many, many things you've never thought of, that's for sure. I've never read anything like this. I actually reread it after once again rereading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (I know, I'm sick, but I just get a kick out of it) and it's one of the few books I would put up in that category. Ostensibly we are following the adventures of low-level journalist, Python Bonkers, as he attempts to obtain an interview of Willie Nelson and save his magazine career. But his life is not so simple. Like a lion tamer he has to use a "poking stick" to keep the drunks at his beach house in line. His Dilbert-like office is filled with looney tunes who believe in social Darwinism. His sub-atomic approach to reality, as a passenger in a particular slice of time in a finite universe has never quite been explored like this (probably be a good discussion topic in a physics class). If you have a sense of humor, about class, religion, the universe and yourself, you will enjoy this hysterical book (with or without your Depends; you'll understand once you read it).
This book is the cult classic that nobody knows about yet.......2006-03-29
I predict this will end up being the type of book passed around college dorms and otherwise disseminated, by word of mouth, for years to come. It's one of those books where you say to your friends, "you've got to read this crazy thing, you're going to get a kick out of it." The rhythm and timing of the prose is excellent for the purposes at hand and all of the sentences are carefully balanced and considered, which is essential to humor writing. This book puts the comic in comic novels. And, as far as fake memoirs go, this is tops.
It opens up with some bizarre back and forth exchanges between Bonkers and one of the characters from the book who hijacks the manuscript and tries to publish it behind his back. Then it directs you to the back of the book for a brief discussion of Determinism. Then back to the front of the book. It is a peculiar opening, funny, but I'm not sure a different editor editing this book wouldn't have worked in a more traditional opening. But without experiments where would we be? Stuck with every other assembly line piece of ___ . . . Maybe a million little pieces of them for that matter. Aside from this, I'm going two thumbs up despite the price, after all, it was twice as humorous as the last comic tome I delved into.
The Dr. is dead. Long live the Dr........2006-03-17
I opened up this book and the first thing that I saw was a testimonial quote: "Only a lunatic would read this book."
I'm just the guy to do it, I thought to myself.
This thing will make you laugh a lot. It's like taking mescaline and that's probably not a bad idea while reading it - or, at least, some sort of herbal redirection. I've never laughed my ass off while reading a book. I mean, bent over laughing and leading to a laughing jag. I don't know, maybe it's just me. Maybe I need to be committed or something, I'm sure others won't get it, but this thing made me piss my pants. Around every corner, or should I say on every page, something jumped out and before I knew it, there I was, bent over laughing again. Jesus. Once you get a taste of that, you keep on moving forward, because now you want it again, like a junky. And then it delivers. I plowed through the thing in a few short days. The opening 10 or 15 pages, I wasn't sure where he was going but it was amusing enough and then once it got in the groove it was a non-stop riot. Who is this guy? I wonder if it's a famous writer having fun on the side?
