        Book Description

Fundamental engineering principles are essential to consider when designing and developing artificial organs, especially the artificial kidney. Early contributors to the development of the artificial kidney were primarily chemical and electrical engineers who developed improved hemodialysis membranes, methods for producing large quantities of dialysis solutions and easy to use machines or dialysis delivery systems. Efforts along these lines continue today to improve hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis therapies.

Recent engineering efforts to improve artificial kidney therapies have focussed on developing a better understanding of the effect of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis on patient physiology or pathophysiology and to develop improved treatments using recent advances in tissue, cellular and genetic engineering. Investigators active in these areas have contributed authoritative chapters to this book.

The focus of this book was to provide bioengineers and other interested researchers with comprehensive reviews of active research related to the artificial kidney. Each chapter begins from first principles and develops the topic to include the most recent research. The chapter authors are experts in their respective fields. This approach will permit both the student and the expert to gain a thorough understanding of the research area.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Aid in Getting an Ear for Homer's Hexameter.......2003-05-01

One of the problems with reading Homer in Greek is getting a feel for the rhythm of the hexameter. Fortunately for students of Homer's Greek, Stephen Daitz, an expert on the pronunciation of ancient Greek, has produced a series of tapes that make the acquisition of an ear for Homer's rhythm a task that is effortless.

In each set of tapes, Daitz reads six books of the Iliad unabridged. He pronounces the Greek according to a scholarly reconstruction of the language as it probably sounded in the time of Plato. In the written material that comes with the tapes, Daitz writes that he has attempted to follow the practice of the ancient rhapsode Ion (well-known to readers of Plato from the dialogue that bears his name) in performing a dramatic reading of the epic. As Daitz puts it, "Ion's delivery was neither mechanical nor nonchalant, but "committed"...such a style of deliver presupposes, I believe, a degree of emotional involvement by the performer , both in the narrative protions of the poem and, to an even greater degree, in the direct speech of the various characters."

Unfortunately, it is Daitz's "committed" performance of the epic that leaves something to be desired. Sadly, Professor Daitz is no Laurence Olivier. His delivery of the narrative is often overwrought and hystrionic and the voices that he gives to the characters can be jarring. His Achilles, for instance, speaks in a shrill, high-pitched voice that is thoroughly unsuited to "ho aristos ton Akhaion".

However, for all that his performance will win him no awards, his reading is still worth four stars for the aid it gives the Greek student in appreciating the hexameter rhythm. After listening to these tapes, I found that the hexameter rhythm had been thoroughly burnt into my brain cells, which took my appreciation of Homer's verse to a whole new level.

George Steiner, praising Christopher Logue's brilliant reconstruction of Homer's work, writes that this book has the "mystery of a creative echo," that it is a "translation of genius." Some combination of a translation, an adaptation, and a new poem inspired from an old wellspring, War Music is violent, beautiful, hypnotic, and terrifying. This is Homer for the era of Stephen King and Quentin Tarentino.

In his brilliant rendering of eight books of Homer's Iliad, Logue here retells some of the most evocative episodes of the war classic, including the death of Patroclus and Achilles's fateful return to battle, that sealed the doom of Troy. Compulsively readable, Logue's poetry flies off the page, and his compelling descriptions of the horrors of war have a surreal, dreamlike quality that has been compared to the films of Kurosawa. Retaining the great poem's story line but rewriting every incident, Logue brings the Trojan War to life for modern audiences.

5 out of 5 stars HOMER WOULD LOVE CHRISTOPHER LOGUE.......2007-08-01

If I were Homer, I would love Christopher Logue's translation/creation. Having just listened to the entire Robert Fagles' Iliad translation, no doubt faithful and beautifully read by Derek Jacobi, I acknowledge that each generation needs to undertake the daunting task of translating Homer, but the Logue work will stand on its own indefinitely because he has done the impossible - genius on genius. I can hardly wait for someone to read it aloud but it needs to be someone as outstanding as a reader as Logue is a poet.

5 out of 5 stars The Trojan War Updated........2006-11-11

Christopher Logue's reinterpretation of Homer's Iliad is not only a masterful historic achievment; it is fine poetry in its own right. Not so much a translation as a re-imagining, War Music and its add-ons (All Day Permanent Red and Cold Calls) bring the great classic to life in a way his stuffier predecessors never managed. Sometimes tragic and sometimes comic, always vivid and never academic, these books are a must for lovers of ancient history, fine writing or just a terrific adventure story. Highly reccommended. 5 out of 5 stars Best Iliad since Homer.......2006-03-23

In creating his own account of Homer's Iliad, Logue has in fact succeeded in creating very much his own poem. His War Music moves at a swift pace, at times enhanced by film script language, at times by witty similes to modern day phenomena, and always with a great sense of humour that leaves the gods and goddesses unrevered, while leaving the bitter earnest of war and all it entails intact. Superb effort, I sincerely hope the poet will manage to complete the series.

                      5 out of 5 stars Best poetry........2005-09-02

This is just about the best, most beautiful, most powerful poetry I've ever read. I'd also suggest this book for reading and discussion groups, as it has so much to talk about in it, while being a pretty quick read. I've been told more than once that it is very difficult for non-native English speakers, however.

                      5 out of 5 stars Mind-blowing!.......2004-06-23

Every good thing you've read about this book and Christopher Logue's work is true.
The bronze age struggle comes through clearly despite the 'modern' references and word choice. I recommend this to every poet and any person who loves words and good writing.

                      Book Description

Here is a new Loeb Classical Library edition of Homer's stirring heroic account of the Trojan war and its passions. The eloquent and dramatic epic poem captures the terrible anger of Achilles, "the best of the Achaeans," over a grave insult to his personal honor and relates its tragic result--a chain of consequences that proves devastating for the Greek forces besieging Troy, for noble Trojans, and for Achilles himself. The poet gives us compelling characterizations of his protagonists as well as a remarkable study of the heroic code in antiquity.

The works attributed to Homer include the two oldest and greatest European epic poems, the Odyssey and the Iliad. These have been published in the Loeb Classical Library for three quarters of a century, the Greek text facing a faithful and literate prose translation by A. T. Murray. William F. Wyatt now brings the Loeb's Iliad up to date, with a rendering that retains Murray's admirable style but is written for today's readers.

I got this to help with my intermediate Greek course; we're reading the first book of the Iliad and other selections. I found that it simply collects dust on my shelf next to all my other Loebs (which I have used much more). If you want something to help you study, I recommend the Lattimore translation of the Iliad. It's line-for-line and nearly completely accurate. The antiquated language of the Loeb and its approximate translation make Homer confusing and inaccessible. However, it is useful because if I read a passage from the Loeb, it forces me to realize what is wrong with it, so in a backwards way I have a better understanding of Homer because I know what is wrong with the Loeb and why the Lattimore is closer to accuracy.

5 out of 5 stars Great edition of a great book.......2006-03-12

Homer, The Iliad, Loeb Classical Library Nos. 170 & 171, translated by A.T. Murray (1924), revised by William F. Wyatt (1999). ISBNs 0674995791 and 0674995805.

The Loeb books are small, as the dimensions on the Amazon product page will show you, and they're all hardcover. All volumes have the original Latin or Greek text on the left and an English translation on the right. Greek Loebs are bound in green and Latin volumes in red. Many Loeb volumes were originally issued in the early part of the twentieth century (the series was started in 1911) and so those which have not been updated can sound stilted to modern ears. A.T. Murray's Loeb translation of the Iliad was published in 1924. The professor of classics at Brown University, William F. Wyatt, has updated Murray's rendering, taking out the thees and thous and adding a few notes to Murray's already very helpful annotations.

I first read the Iliad in Butler's translation. I decided to read it again, and chose the Loeb version for the series' translations, which as mentioned above, tend toward the literal side of things to help students who are reading the Greek text and using the translation as a "crib." Of course, the Iliad really is "Greek" to me, and so the translation is the only useful thing to me in the Loeb edition. But the translation is well worth the forty bucks or so it costs for both volumes. The sentences can get a bit long and involved, but nothing worse than you'll find in older English literature, and I know enough about Greek to know it has long sentences. So from someone who knows no Greek, take it for what it's worth.

As for the Iliad itself: it might take a bit of getting used to for the modern reader, should he be unused to anything outside of his own century. Every time a warrior dies, it's "and over him his armor clanged," or "and his knees were loosed," or another formula phrase. Characters most likely have a descriptive handle: "Odysseus of many wiles," "ox-eyed queenly Hera," "swift-footed Achilles." But I quickly got the point where I was enjoying the formulas and not resenting them. Battle scenes are rather graphic: we're told exactly where the spearpointed entered and where it came out, and exactly which body parts fell out in the process; although a lot of us moderns brought up on Hollywood gore won't mind that.

So should you read the Iliad? If you do, you put yourself in company with Aeschylus, Plato, Aristotle, Virgil, Dante, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Milton, Johnson, our Founding Fathers, Tolstoy, and J.R.R. Tolkien, just to name a few. So do yourself a favor and give it a try.

                      5 out of 5 stars Loeb still a classic.......2006-03-12

Wyatt's revision of Murray's classic translation updates the English text. The accuracy of the translation of the Greek in the line by line fashion characteristic of the Loeb classics is invaluable to those interested in reading at least parts of Homer in classical Greek.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable translation.......2005-07-23

I suppose whether you will like this version of the Iliad comes down to if you prefer a poetic or prose version. If you prefer the poetic translations, this book is not for you. On the other hand, I have found this to be my favorite to read (Butler's is good if you can find one with Greek god names as opposed to Roman), and it is a prose version. I have 7 or 8 of the various translations, and this is the one I come back to just to read for pleasure. And, it being a Loeb, it has the Greek on the left, so if you are feeling adventurous you can work on your language skills.

All-in-all a fine version of the Iliad.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest epics.......2004-09-12

This review does not deal with the translation issue. I don't know Ancient Greek so can't really say which the best version is. I used the Penguin and Loeb Classical Library editions (in two books) and found them both equally good. The English from the Loeb was perhaps slightly more formal than the freer flowing prose in the Penguin.

But if you haven't read the Iliad, and aren't too fussed about which version is truer to the Greek or more `poetic', then your main concern must be if it is worth your time (and money) to invest in this epic.

At first I did not appreciate the constant "and his armor clanged over him" which became so repetitious that I began to hear the clanging myself. The relaying of messages, verbatim, was also something that I had to get used to. But after these initial misgivings, I came to enjoy the story. It became engaging and I ended up being attached (if that is possible) to some of the heroes in the novel. I felt for Hector as he tried to protect his city from the devastation that would come about should the Argives gain the upper hand.

The battle scenes were very descriptive. Homer certainly made sure his audience knew exactly what happened, whether the spear punctured the right eye, went in through the kidney or split the head in half. You are even given short biographies of some unknown warrior as he is about to die. Perhaps this is of interest to those studying Homer or Greek literature, but to the average reader it might seem a bit much. I mean, do we really need to know the genealogy of everyone that was involved in the battle? Again, that is something you will have to get used to, as the book progresses.

Even, if you know the story or have seen the recently released Troy, I would suggest you experience the Iliad. Yes, you don't read the Iliad as much as you experience it. I was taken back into a completely foreign culture in a completely different time and yet I found that I could relate to Hector, to Menelaus, to Agamemnon, and yes, even to that braggart Achilles. We should be thankful that Homer's Iliad was preserved so that we, in the 21st century are able to enjoy this masterpiece.

I cannot recommend this book enough, there are some things that at first will seem strange to you, but persevere, because when you are nearing the end of this book, and indeed after you have finished it, you will wish it was longer. Trust me. Read this book.

I was able to work my way through and really enjoy Iliad I with the help Simon Pulleyn and Pamela A. Draper after two semesters of Greek. Both are valuable: Pulleyn has an excellent introduction, great notes and commentary. The English translation is on the facing page. Draper has a good introduction and a glossary on the same and facing page. If you are interested in reading Homer in the original there is a lot of help out there. I would highly recommend these books. [...]
