4 out of 5 stars Good book but so much money.......2006-07-22

This book is massive and covers a huge spectrum of material. Probably not cost effective in comparison to Fetter and Walecka unless you get it for under eighty bucks. I enjoyed it quite a bit until the Postal Service stole it from me.

3 out of 5 stars Containing too many misprints........2001-11-19

Unfortunately, the 3rd edition of Mahan's book contains enormous number of misprints. Sometimes, it is impossible to understand what is meant by the author without consulting the previous edition. For example, in Sec. 4.1.5. the author refers in the text to the equation which apparently should be between Eqs. (4.126) and (4.127) but which had been omitted. At the same time, some evident drawbacks of the previous edition have not been corrected. For example, the definition of the thermodynamic average used in Sec. 3.6 is different from that used in the previous sections, although it is not mentioned in the text. Despite the book is an excellent introduction into the field of Many-Particle Physics, I would recommend to the customer to either buy the previous edition or to wait for a new one.

5 out of 5 stars Bien detaille, comprehensible........1999-03-16

    Product Description

Relativistic quantum electrodynamics, which describes the electromagnetic interactions of electrons and atomic nuclei, provides the basis for modeling the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and solids and of their interactions with photons and other projectiles. The theory underlying the widely used GRASP relativistic atomic structure program, the DARC electron-atom scattering code and the new BERTHA relativistic molecular structure program is presented in depth, together with computational aspects relevant to practical calculations. Along with an understanding of the physics and mathematics, the reader will gain some idea of how to use these programs to predict energy levels, ionization energies, electron affinities, transition probabilities, hyperfine effects and other properties of atoms and molecules.

Intended for Physicists and Chemists who need to understand the theory of atomic and molecular structure and processes, and who wish to apply the theory to practical problems. As far as practicable, the book will provide a self-contained account of the theory of relativistic atomic and molecular structure, based on the accepted formalism of bound-state Quantum Electrodynamics. The theory will be based securely on rigorous mathematical and numerical analysis. Those more interested in applications than in understanding the models in depth will be able to skip much of the mathematical material. The algorithms used in several software packages -- for atomic structures, for electron-atom scattering and photoionisation and for relativistic atomic and molecular structures -- will be presented, together with an outline of the scope and use of each. The software packeges themselves will be included on a CD. Many applications of relativistic atomic and molecular structure theory use model potentials, self-consistent fields, or density- functional methods, supplemented by some form of many-body perturbation theory or coupled-cluster method for improved accurac

      Book Description

These proceedings present a range of topics presently at the forefront of many-body physics. These include microscopic systems such as fullerenes and the atomic nucleus, mesoscopic systems like metal clusters with a sizable but still small number of atoms, and condensed matter. Also dealt with is pairing in matter at very low densities, new phases of carbon, high-temperature superconductivity and supershells. In particular, methods developed in the study of the atomic nucleus which are becoming instrumental in the exploration of the properties of metal clusters are dealt with, as are nonperturbative approaches to strongly correlated fermions in condensed matter which are now becoming a source of inspiration in trying to deal with basic open problems in the study of the nuclear structure.

        Book Description

The importance of electron correlation effects for the accurate description of the electronic structure of atoms, molecules and crystals is now widely recognized. In this text, modern theories of electronic structure and methods of incorporating electron correlation contributions are developed using a diagrammatic and algebraic formulation. This approach is intended to facilitate an understanding of the interconnections between the different approaches. As a further aid to understanding, the methods developed in the text are illustrated with examples from molecular and solid state quantum mechanics. The techniques presented here treat such topics as operator algebra, Hartree-perturbation theory and the coupled cluster method. The text is intended for graduate students in physical chemistry and physics.

              Book Description

This work explores the application of harmonic oscillator states in problems of atomic, molecular, nuclear and elementary particle physics. The early chapters offer a comprehensive discussion of problems involving from one to four particles and the n-particle problem in the Hartree-Fock approximation, with extensive use of the transformation brackets for harmonic oscillator coefficients and related concepts. The application of harmonic oscillator states to scattering problems is also discussed, as is the group theory underlying the harmonic oscillator and its application to the Coulomb problem, collective motions in nuclei, and relativistic many body problems with oscillator interactions. Written by two internationally-recognized experts in the field, this book will serve as an essential resource for the serious graduate student as well as the professional physicist or mathematician.

4 out of 5 stars Many diverse applications.......2004-06-07

The harmonic oscillator is one of the classic problems that recurs in physics. Partly because the underlying differential equation is one of the simplest non-trivial equations possible. But, and related to this, because it is a problem that can be solved exactly.

What the authors have done is gather under one cover a panoply of harmonic oscillator applications in modern physics. Something that is otherwise scattered through various monographs and journal papers. This in itself has merit to those of you who might have wondered how extensively the idea is applied in various branches of physics.

The phrase `life's little ironies' is now proverbial, but it was coined by Hardy as the title for this, his third volume of short stories. While the tales and sketches reflect many of the strengths and themes of the great novels, they are powerful works in their own right. Unified by his quintessential irony, strong visual sense, and engaging characters, they deal with the tragic and the humorous, the metaphysical and the magical. The collection displays the whole range of Hardy's art as a writer of fiction, from fantasy to uncompromising realism, and from the loving re-creation of a vanished rural world to the repressions of fin-de-siecle bourgeois life.

To the eyes of a man viewing it from behind, the nut-brown hair was a wonder and a mystery. Under the black beaver hat, surmounted by its tuft of black feathers, the long locks, braided and twisted and coiled like the rushes of a basket, composed a rare, if some-what barbaric, example of ingenious art. One could understand such weavings and coilings being wrought to last intact for a year, or even a calendar month; but that they should be all demolished regularly at bedtime, after a single day of permanence, seemed a reckless waste of successful fabrication. And she had done it all herself, poor thing. She had no maid, and it was almost the only accomplishment she could boast of. Hence the unstinted pains. She was a young invalid lady - not so very much of an invalid - sitting in a wheeled chair, which had been pulled up in the front part of a green enclosure, close to a bandstand, where a concert was going on, during a warm June afternoon. It had place in one of the minor parks or private gardens that are to be found in the suburbs of London, and was the effort of a local association to raise money for some charity. There are worlds within worlds in the great city, and though nobody outside the immediate district had ever heard of the charity, or the band, or the garden, the enclosure was filled with an interested audience sufficiently informed on all these.

                  5 out of 5 stars Just wonderful.......2002-06-10

What wonderful language! What wonderful characters! If you're looking for happy endings, don't look here. Tragedy, suicide, and deceivement abound in these short stories. (My 1965 hard-cover copy also includes A FEW CRUSTED CHARACTERS.) But if you appreciate remarkable writing that will take your breath away, this is it! Comparable to Hardy's THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE.

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating piece of Hardy.......2000-05-18

As a great admirer of "Jude the Obscure" and "Tess of the D'Ubervilles," I was intrigued when I saw this collection of some of Hardy's shorter works, and was not disapointed. The common theme running through these sketches is Hardy's dissatisfaction with the institution of marriage. Written in Hardy's impeccable style, these stories are short and biting looks at the circumstances that surround and influence marriage. You'll find few happy endings among these tales, but they are an enjoyable read. It's always a pleasure to immerse oneself in Hardy's world and language, and the twisted little plots Hardy creates show a side of his genius I had not previously realized.

These stories are not as profound as some of Hardy's other works, and, by necessity, the characters are not as well developed. However, I would still recommend this book. For a fan of Tess or Jude, it's a fascinating look into the mind of Hardy at the time he was writing these novels. And for someone who's never read any Hardy, they are an easy and enjoyable introduction to a wonderful author.

5 out of 5 stars Great quality but slow shipping on .......2007-02-19

I would recommend this book to almost anyone who wants a good read. The stories are short enough that you can read in one sitting but understanding them can take a while. Unfortunatley, I ordered it as a textbook but it came too late for the class so I had to go out and get a more expensive version. The actual product that came was still in great condition meriting 5 stars but I didn't need it, so I had to return it.
