Book Description
This comprehensive textbook utilizes Green's functions and the equations derived from them to solve real physical problems in solid-state theoretical physics. Green's functions are used to describe processes in solids and quantum fluids and to address problems in areas such as electron gas, polarons, electron transport, optical response, superconductivity and superfluidity.
The updated third edition features several new chapters on different mean-free paths, Hubbard model, Coulomb blockade, and the quantum Hall effect. New sections have been added, while original sections have been modified to include recent applications.
This text is ideal for third- or fourth-year graduate students and includes numerous study problems and an extensive bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
Good book but so much money.......2006-07-22
This book is massive and covers a huge spectrum of material. Probably not cost effective in comparison to Fetter and Walecka unless you get it for under eighty bucks. I enjoyed it quite a bit until the Postal Service stole it from me.
Containing too many misprints........2001-11-19
Unfortunately, the 3rd edition of Mahan's book contains enormous number of misprints. Sometimes, it is impossible to understand what is meant by the author without consulting the previous edition. For example, in Sec. 4.1.5. the author refers in the text to the equation which apparently should be between Eqs. (4.126) and (4.127) but which had been omitted. At the same time, some evident drawbacks of the previous edition have not been corrected. For example, the definition of the thermodynamic average used in Sec. 3.6 is different from that used in the previous sections, although it is not mentioned in the text. Despite the book is an excellent introduction into the field of Many-Particle Physics, I would recommend to the customer to either buy the previous edition or to wait for a new one.
Bien detaille, comprehensible........1999-03-16

Book Description
Quantum Kinetics in Transport and Optics of Semiconductors deals with the quantum kinetics for transport in low-dimensional microstructures and for ultrashort laser-pulse spectroscopy. The nonequilibrium Green function theory is described and used for the derivation of the quantum kinetic equations. Numerical methods for the solution of the retarded quantum kinetic equations are discussed and results are presented for quantum high-field transport and for mesoscopic transport phenomena. Quantum beats, polarization decay and non-Markovian behaviour are treated for femtosecond spectroscopy on a microscopic basis.

A very useful book on Keldysh techniques.......1999-05-28
I recommend this book to anyone who wants an introduction to nonequilibrium Green function techniques. It is much more readible and up-to-date than Kadanoff and Baym's "Quantum Statistical Mechanics".

Excellent overview on Kadanoff-Baym equations.......2000-07-15
This book provides a very interesting overview on nonequilibrium Green's functions. It will be of use for physicists new to the field but for experts as well. Of particular interest are the historical reviews of Paul Martin and Gordon Baym. Scientists active in the field will appreciate the details on numerical solutions of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for plasmas, semiconductors and nuclear matter.
Book Description
This text takes the student with a background in undergraduate physics and mathematics towards the skills and insights needed for graduate work in theoretical physics. The author uses Green's functions to explore the physics of potentials, diffusion, and waves. These are important phenomena
in their own right, but this study of the partial differential equations describing them also prepares the student for more advanced applications in many-body physics and field theory. Calculations are carried through in enough detail for self-study, and case histories illustrate the interplay
between physical insight and mathematical formalism. The aim is to develop the habit of dialogue with the equations and the craftsmanship this fosters in tackling the problem. The book is based on the author's extensive teaching experience.
Customer Reviews:
Highly accessible and practiacally organized........2005-10-15
The content is well organized: you don't have to read the whole book to extract the information you need. Personally, I needed to find a Green's function for a modified diffusion equation with an unusual set of boundry/intial value conditions. Reading chapters 8,9 made this task very simple. Addionally, the author makes liberal use of the propagator, making this book ideal for physicists.
Beautifully presents GF for 3 classic equations. Well done!.......1998-10-30
Designed for senior-level or first-year graduate students, Barton's book is a beautiful introduction to the classic analytical method of Green's functions (GF). Much of the information here is available in applied math sources, but Barton has pulled information together that is par ticulary useful for physicists and engineers. The book was intended as a text but is comprehensive enough to serve as a reference. The advantage of the method of GF is that there is a unique GF for each geometry. If you have the GF, then you can solve any problem on that geometry by evaluating an integral equation. Barton calls this integral equation the "magic rule". The book begins with a very nice introduction to the Dirac delta function. The book covers three classic linear partial differential equations: Poisson equation, heat equation, and wave equation. Since the character of these equations is quite different, the GF is introduced for each equation. Several methods are shown for finding GF's and using them to solve problems, some of which are quite advanced. Some GF's are given scattered throughout the book. There are several appendices for advanced topics.
Book Description
The new edition of a standard reference will be of interest to advanced students wishing to become familiar with the method of Green's functions for obtaining simple and general solutions to basic problems in quantum physics. The main part is devoted to the simplest kind of Green's functions, namely the solutions of linear differential equations with a -function source. It is shown that these familiar Green's functions are a powerful tool for obtaining relatively simple and general solutions of basic problems such as scattering and boundlevel information. The bound-level treatment gives a clear physical understanding of "difficult" questions such as superconductivity, the Kondo effect, and, to a lesser degree, disorder-induced localization. The more advanced subject of many-body Green's functions is presented in the last part of the book. This third edition is 50% longer than the previou and offers end-of-chapter problems and solutions (40% are solved) and additional appendices to helpit is to serve as an effective self-tutorial and self-sufficient reference. Throughout, it demonstrates the powerful and unifying formalism of Green's functions across many applications, including transport properties, carbon nanotubes, and photonics and photonic crystals.

Product Description
The book describes the modern theory of light hydrogen-like systems, and - the discussion is based on quantum electrodynamics. In particular, Green's functions, relativistic bound-state equations and Feynman diagrams are extensively used. New theoretical approaches are described and explained. The book contains derivation of many theoretical results obtained in recent years. A complete set of all theoretical results for the energy levels of hydrogen-like bound states, as well as comparison with experiment, is presented.

Book Description
This monograph is devoted to the study of equilibrium and nonequilibrium states of infinite continuous systems in quantum statistical mechanics. The states of these systems are described by infinite sequences of statistical operators (reduced density matrices) or Green's functions which satisfy the infinite hierarchy of integro-differential equations. The investigation of these equations and constructing their solutions is the main subject of this work. Model systems in the theories of superconductivity and superfluidity and other exactly solvable models are studied in detail. This volume will be of interest to mathematical and theoretical physicists and applied mathematicians interested in quantum statistical mechanics.
Book Description
With the sun finally setting on that wondrous earthy paradise that is Blandings, Vicky Underwood finds herself forcibly parted from her beloved, Jeff Bennison. Her Uncle Galahad turns his not inconsiderable talents to reuniting the love-birds. Wodehouse's final chronicle of Blandings is unfinished, but three Wodehouse admirers have supplied a treasure trove of notes and plot details, providing fascinating insights into the mind of the author.

A Last Look at a Master's Inner Workings at Blandings Castle.......2004-12-06
This book will only appeal to those who are hard-core P.G. Wodehouse fans, especially those who love the books about the inhabitants of Blandings Castle and the Empress of Blandings. For these fans, Sunset at Blandings will be a delightful revelation and a final memorial to the great comic master. For everyone else, this book will be a non-starter.
P.G. Wodehouse died, unfortunately, while working on the manuscript for Sunset at Blandings (a title he would never have chosen himself, as the editor notes). The first draft of the manuscript was pretty far along with a story line written for the first sixteen chapters, along with many notes about how to revise those chapters and write the final six.
The noted Wodehouse expert, Richard Usborne, has done a fine job of reviewing the notes and taking his best guess as to how the book probably would have been competed, and arranged to transcribe the remaining hand-written notes which are reproduced here. From those notes, you get a sense of how the marvelously intricate and fast-moving plots were developed and how each page ended up with so many original turns of phrase that bring a smile to the reader's delighted face. It was well worth the trip to understand how much rewriting, condensing and polishing P.G. Wodehouse did. He always makes it seem so effortless. I found it reassuring as a writer to discover that he struggled with his craft much as most writers do.
To me, the book held two other delights that were unexpected. First, Mr. Usborne has considered all of the manuscripts about Blandings Castle and taken a crack at what the floor layout and surrounding grounds might have looked like. That's quite a challenge because P.G. Wodehouse didn't have an editor who cared about continuity to rein him in. The marvelously misshapen incongruities are brought together for a sense of what must usually have been the case in these novels. Second, Mr. Usborne used the railway schedules and descriptions of the surroundings to take a guess about where in Shropshire Blandings Castle was imagined to be. That discussion might seem senseless except when you read the notes about when the Library of Congress began its research to find out about the copy of the Gutenberg Bible that was deposited there in one of the early stories about the castle.
The story is one that holds much promise. Galahad Threepwood is again trying to help young lovers by foiling one of his sisters. He helps his niece, Victoria (Vicky) Underwood, to smuggle in her artist fiancé, Jeff Bennison, under the guise of being a well-known painter of pigs to make an oil of the Empress for the family portrait gallery. As usually, the poor fellow's fault is that he has no money. Naturally, Vicky is rolling in the stuff so the challenge is to get her stepmother out of the way. Vicky wants to elope but Jeff demurs because he wants Clarence to get his pig portrait first. That puts a strain on the old relationship. As another plot line, Sir James Piper, England's Chancellor of the Exchequer, is also drawn to Blandings where he will encounter another of Gally's sisters, Diana Phipps, with whom he is in love . . . but too shy to declare himself. Having a body guard doesn't make matters any easier. What ho! How will it turn out? No one knows for sure, and you guess is as good as Mr. Usborne's is.
Have fun!
sadly, unfinished.......2004-06-25
Sunset at Blandings was Wodehouse's last and, sadly, unfinished book. What there is of the book is, as Wodehouse's writing invariably is, very funny. Accompanying the unfished novel are some wonderful extras including Wodehouse's plot outline, some of his other notes, the editor's analysis of the book, a short piece about the origins of Blandings Castle and another about the Empress of Blandings. If you're new to Wodehouse you should probably read something else of his first (Leave it to Psmith and Pigs Have Wings are both excellent for first-timers), but for those who like Wodehouse this offers an wonderful look at how he did his writing.
Sunset=Last..........2001-03-01
This book is like all the other Wodehouse books, Galahad trying to bring a couple together. It is a wonderful satire on all the earls, lords, dukes etc. etc. This one is about a lover who is posing as a person who is going to paint a pig, the Empress. Wodehouse never finished the book (because he died while writing it), but that makes it even more interesting. But be careful, once you start reading his books, most likely you will not stop. Everybody will be able to enjoy it a little bit, for his books make you laugh until tears come rolling down your cheeks. Cheers! :)
The master at work--inside writing........1998-05-07
It was a bitter-sweet experience to read this book years ago, knowing it was P.G.'s last, and unfinished to boot. However, the editor (a Wodehouse biographer) included manuscripts and early drafts, showing marginal notes and erasures, Wodehouse's outline of his plot, and false starts of plot lines, and the editor's own analysis. A fascinating look into the process of writing.
