Excellant Magnetism and Sychrotron Characterization Reference.......2007-05-16
This book is has a wonderful overview of both the basic concepts of magnetism, as well as the cutting-edge developments of the past decade. It also has an excellent explanation of the novel synchrotron x-ray techniques used to characterize magnetism in practice today (XMD&PEEM). Exceptionally well written from two scientists who are excellent public speakers and know how to captivate an audience. Highly recommended!

Book Description
Synchrotron radiation sources are now used routinely by thousands of research scientists and engineers throughout the world to perform experiments in biology, physics, materials science, chemistry and so on. The very best of these sources are based upon the use of undulator and wiggler insertion devices that can enhance the intensity of the radiation by many orders of magnitude. This book, which is part of the Oxford Series on Synchrotron Radiation, brings together both a detailed step by step description of the radiation properties from these devices as well as an explanation of the practical realisation of actual devices using available magnet technologies. The book is aimed at not just the users but also the providers of synchrotron radiation. It takes the reader through the fundamental issues, and provides sufficient depth so as to be an indispensible reference to light source designers, accelerator physicists and insertion device specialists. The approach taken is to provide the reader with all of the essential information and to back this up with practical examples and illustrations wherever possible.

Book Description
The present volume comprehensively summarizes the late Julian Schwinger's work on the theory of electromagnetic radiation and its application to waveguides, transmission lines, accelerator physics and synchrotron radiation. The first part, written in textbook style, has grown out of lectures and manuscripts by Julian Schwinger prepared during the war at MIT's Radiation Laboratory, updated with material developed by Schwinger at UCLA in the 1970s and 1980s, and by Milton at the University of Oklahoma since 1994. The second part consists of reprints of more than 15 papers (some of them never published or available with very limited circulation) by Schwinger on these topics. This volume will be of great interest to physicists, electrical engineers and applied mathematicians whether they be students or seasoned professionals. A paperback study edition of the first part is available separately.

Product Description
Volume IX will be devoted to new materials (nanotubes, quantum dots) and new techniques (synchrotron radiation scattering and cavity confined scattering. In the past five years Raman and Brillouin scattering have taken a place among the most important research and characterization methods for carbon nanotubes. It is beginning to be used for other nanotube materials. It is also being used in the investigation of semiconductor quantum dots, in particular collections of them which order self-assemble) automatically as two-dimensional lattices. Among the novel techniques discussed in this volume are those which use synchrotron radiation as light source. Improvements in the intensity and beam quality of modern synchrotron sources fully dedicated to spectroscopic work have made possible their use as sources for light scattering spectroscopy. In the case of scattering by phonons, new methods of beam monochromatization have allowed resolutions better than 10 wave numbers, a fact which has lead to phonon dispersion measurements throughout the whole Brillouin zone. This development has been applied to the measurement of phonon dispersion relations in very small samples (of the order of 1 cubic mm) which cannot be investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. Also, the use of resonant Raman scattering by electronic excitations has allowed the determination of electronic energy bands in a number of materials. Another approach to Raman spectroscopy is to enhance its efficiency by using resonant cavities which are part of the sample. Electromagnetic resonances have been already used for some time. More recently, they have been combined with acoustic resonances to obtain large enhancements in Raman efficiencies.

Book Description
This book gives a thorough treatment of the rapidly-expanding field of coherent x-ray optics, which has recently experienced something of a renaissance with the availability of third-generation synchrotron sources. It is the first book of its kind. The author begins with a treatment of the
fundamentals of x-ray diffraction for both coherent and partially coherent radiation, together with the interactions of x-rays with matter. X-ray sources, optics elements and detectors are then discussed, with an emphasis on their role in coherent x-ray optics. Various facets of coherent x-ray
imaging are then discussed, including holography, interferometry, self-imaging, phase contrast and phase retrieval. Lastly, the foundations of the new field of singular x-ray optics are examined. Most topics are developed from first principles, with numerous references given to the contemporary
research literature. This book will be useful to x-ray physicists and students, together with optical physicists and engineers who wish to learn more about the fascinating subject of coherent x-ray optics.

Book Description
While residual stress can be a problem in many industries and lead to early failure of component, it can also be introduced deliberately to improve lifetimes. Knowledge of the residual stress state in a component can be critical for quality control of surface engineering processes or vital to performing an accurate assessment of component life under fatigue loading. Neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction have emerged as leading techniques for stress analysis, as they can penetrate many millimetres or centimetres into components, allowing nondestructive measurement of the internal strains. Both methods require the use of costly facility-based equipment, but great advantages are obtained from the ability to probe the stress state deep below a specimen's surface. Analysis of Residual Stress by Diffraction Using Neutron and Synchrotron Radiation gives an overview of the principles of these techniques and examples of their applications to a range of materials and engineering problems. It contains 20 chapter contributed by leading international experts in residual stress analysis, who explore the theoretical basis of stress analysis by diffraction methods, the practical implementation of the methods, and examples of key applications. The applications discussed include the determination of internal stresses in weldments, in composite materials, following shot peening, and in ceramics. This book will be useful for engineers and scientists who work in any field where residual stresses are of importance, and for anyone involved with the application of neutron or synchrotron radiation for stress management. As the techniques become a basic component of the measurement toolkit for stress analysis, an appreciation of the practicalities and limitations of these methods in practice will be important throughout a range of engineering and scientific fields.

Book Description
IN HOLLYWOOD, THEY LIKE TO LOVE 'EM AND LEAVE 'EM.
The Starter Wife
A scathingly funny novel from the bestselling author of Maneater.
When her husband, Kenny, dumps her by cell phone (!) mere months before their ten-year wedding anniversary, Gracie Pollock is dazed and confused. Though life as the wife of a semi-famous Hollywood studio executive often left her yawning, Gracie always believed she and Kenny were different from other Hollywood couples. She never thought she'd be a starter wife.
But Kenny has upgraded, and with images of his new pop tartlet girlfriend everywhere Gracie turns, she seeks refuge at her best friend's Malibu mansion. Then a mysterious hunk saves her from drowning and suddenly drowning in her sorrows seems like a waste of time. And when she takes up with Kenny's boss, one of Hollywood's better-known Lotharios, she discovers that maybe life after divorce -- Hollywood-style -- isn't so bad after all!
Customer Reviews:
I am not sure if I would necessarily recommend that you read it, but.....!.......2007-08-14
I think the other reviews, and the description of the book is enough to give you an idea about what the book is about, so I will try not to retell. I decided to give the book a chance because I watched an episode of the television series and thought that it would be interesting. Please note that the book does vary from the series. Anyway, I am not sure if I was right about giving this book a chance. I expected it to be more like "Wolves in Chic Clothing", but it wasn't. At times it was too wordy and tooooooooo superficial.
In a nutshell, Gracie's Hollywood husband tells her that he wants a divorce via cell phone. He has found another love....a la Brittany Spears. He tells Gracie this after almost 10 years of marriage (he breaks the news 1 month before their anniversary) and a four year old daughter. And she realizes, he drops this news weeks before their pre-nup would be null in void. Anyway, as she goes through several unnecessary changes (for example, the whole I am not accepted in my old world because I was a starter wife and what does this mean?), she is supported by three loyal friends (a gay interior decorator, Will; a dizzy wife of a successful producer, Cricket; and a longtime friend and drunk, Joan). They soon help her realize that she never really, truly loved Kenny (a loser), and that she had indeed lost herself in the marriage. She had given up everything, including writing (she wrote children books) to become what he wanted, a Hollywood wife.
What I did like about the story was the journey Gracie made realizing that by compromising herself, or giving up small pieces of herself to satisfy her husband's desire for success, she forgot who she was. So, while discovering herself and her independence, she soon finds lust (which for her turns into love) with Sam, who appears on the surface to be a homeless man with a checkered past. I did like the story of how Sam became what he was, and how he decided to rejoin society because of his love for her. HOWEVER, there were several things that I didn't like about the novel. I thought the whole "ex-husband leaves her for Brittany Spears" was stupid! And the whole chatter containing the Hollywood inside scoop was dumb. I think the story referencing Gracie and Sam's journeys to find each other and themselves was more compelling than the "insider" scoop. With that in mind, a "2" is all that I think the book warrants, and that is probably being generous.
Incredibly well written but not a keeper.......2007-08-06
The author did an expert job at writing this book, the scenes and characeters were well described...but it lingered on and on and on.
A. This book could have been less descriptive at times and more to the point. Sometimes it dragged on and on describing one topic or scene.
B. Name dropping made the book less believable.
C. The female lead was annoying as was her husband.
I actually finished 1/2 the book and then I skipped right to the end.
Smooth out your beach blanket and enjoy the read.......2007-07-25
Gracie Pollock's husband Kenny dumps her just a few months shy of their tenth wedding anniversary--by cell phone, no less. She becomes what she and most other Hollywood wives fear and pity the most: a starter wife.
Gracie's life begins to change at an alarming pace. She and her daughter move to a friend's house in Malibu, where Gracie finds herself interested in both Kenny's boss and a mysterious man she meets on the beach. She must learn to navigate the post-divorce landscape.
Part chick lit, part Sex and the City-style satire (LA style, of course), part romance with a generous dash of humor, The Starter Wife is a fun summer read.
I also watched the USA Network's miniseries based on this novel, and I have to say much of it is not like the book. The characters are there, of course (some with different names), but much of the humor in the television version is nowhere to be found in the book. So if you're looking for the fun film noir scenes, or Joan's "sister" from her therapy session, you won't find them in the pages of Grazer's novel. The casting of Debra Messing, however, was perfect.
Armchair Interviews says: Fun summer read.
I've read better.......2007-07-23
I found the book funny but a bit predictable. The whole homeless/rich thing was sort of wierd. How great could he have looked? Did he go to the dentist? etc...
Also, the whole thing with Kenny's boss???
Nonexistant character development........2007-07-19
I actually saw the miniseries based on this book and decided to give in and read silly chick lit for once because I did enjoy said miniseries. BAD IDEA. What annoyed me about the miniseries was that it abounded in bad cliches; as for this novel, it completely lacked any sort of character development. I would have been much better off just sticking with the miniseries and enjoying it, because this novel ruined it for me. And they say that the book is usually better than the movie! Humph.
Customer Reviews:
Sometimes funny just isn't enough.......2007-06-29
There's a lot of humor in this novel, and anyone who enjoys send-ups of the Hollywood scene (some of us because we're disappointed we didn't make it in ourselves, and we want to believe these people are actually unhappy in spite of wealth and recognition) will get at least some laughs out of the story of poor Gracie, over-the-hill at 41. But while the author, via Gracie, can aim a arrow straight and true at Hollywood's heart, she never develops a story worthy of her wit. The first half of the book is a long comedy routine, and by the time we're supposed to care about what happens to Gracie it's too little too late.
I'm waiting for someone to write a book about how intensely gratifying it must be to be so accomplished at the art of acting that you can will roles for which there is unimaginable competition and not only have people pay money to come watch you but to do so for pleasure. Every novel needs conflict, but an author could certainly design a story in which that comes from another source.
Get That Novel Written
Book is better than the mini series.......2007-06-22
I read this book after seeing the commercials for the mini series. I must say I am glad I read the book first. I enjoy the show, but wish they would not have strayed so much from the book. In the book Crickett was a devoted friend throughout, and did not have a cheater for a husband. Joan was also more likeable in the book. I liked the character Will (name changed in the show) better in the book as well.
My advice, read the book!!
Stay away from this amateur book!.......2007-06-12
This is probably one of the worst books I have ever read. I picked it up at the airport to spend the next 7 hours on the plane - and boy did I regret it. The only reason I kept reading was because there was nothing else to do.
The main character - Gracie is so ridiculously self absorbed, shallow, vain and dumb that it's impossible to empathise with her when her husband dumps her - for Britney Spears! I mean, even Britney looks like a genius next to Gracie.
The plot (if you can call it that) is a done to death story about a wife who gets dumped by her rich and successful husband as he hits middle age, for a younger woman. There is no hint of grief or maturity in Gracie at that point. She's immediately scouting around Malibu looking for someone to date/make out with?
The name dropping gets on your nerves, the friends are one dimensional characters, Sam bored me to death.. The book seems like the work of a 6th grader, with a wafer thin plot, whiny and irritating characters and a school-girl style of writing.
And I can't believe there's a movie coming out based on this book!!!!
Truly Enjoyable Read.......2007-05-10
I picked up this book in the airport before a recent trip to Aruba. From the moment I picked it up, I could not put it down. Grazer writes a witty, fun, and humurous story that is the perfect beach/vacation read with characters that leave you wanting more and more. When a heard there would be a Lifetime television movie/show based on The Starter Wife I was delighted. Only thing is now it must live up to the print version.
Entertaining Read.......2007-04-05
I was reading over some of the other reviews and people seemed to not like the book, but honestly I thought it was really good. I started reading the book because i seen that there was going to be a show on TV this summer themed after the book and I already had it but hadnt read it yet so I wanted to read it before the show began. I did have a few issues with it, but all in all i rally enjoyed reading it. The whole Will and Gracie seemed to be a little bit like the long running sitcom "Will and Grace" and sometimes things seemed predictible or a little unbelievible. All in all the book was good, I enjoyed it, and would reccomend it to someone who just wanted a good book to enjoy by the pool this summer.

Book Description
Gracie always believed she and Kenny were different from other Hollywood couples. She was never supposed to be a starter wife....
When Gracie Pollock is dumped by her husband, Kenny -- on her cell phone, no less -- mere months before their tenth wedding anniversary, she is left completely dumbfounded. Sure, life as the wife of a semi-famous Hollywood executive often left her yawning, but she was blissfully accustomed to the luxurious and cushy lifestyle it afforded her (not to mention a fabulous designer wardrobe).
But Kenny had moved on (and younger) to a new pop tartlet girlfriend who seems to be everywhere Gracie turns. While she's seeking refuge at her best friend's Malibu mansion, one day a mysterious hunk saves her from drowning -- and suddenly drowning in her sorrows seems like a waste of time. And when she finds herself smitten with Kenny's boss, one of Hollywood's better-known Lotharios, Gracie discovers that life after divorce -- Hollywood-style -- isn't so bad after all!
Customer Reviews:
Real Love!.......2007-05-30
I loved this book, couldn't put it down. For someone to have been discarded the way she was and then to fall for someone she didn't really know. She was willing to give everything up for the love of this man and then to have things turn out the way they did in the end! I really loved the other characters that were her friends - real friends who stood by her through it all. I can't wait to watch this on tv now.
Don't get me started.......2007-04-29
Because she is a real-life "Wife Of," Gigi Levangie Grazer has been hailed as the "on the inside" Hollywood chick-litter. Inexplicably, it turns out, because "The Starter Wife" is full of the vapid, name-dropping superficiality that any housewife from Nebraska could dream up.
Gracie is a "Wife Of" -- wealthy, toned, dyed and perfectly preserved, and married to a Hollywood heavyweight with one kid. Until Kenny hits midlife crisis -- he dresses loudly, gets an earring, and then tells Gracie that he wants a divorce. In the dizzying whirlwind of divorce, Gracie finds out that he's having an affair with Britney Spears (presumably in the months before she started slumming it with Kevin Whatsisface and turned into an erratic drunk).
A concerned pal lends Gracie her Malibu house, so the newly-divorced can get her bearings and life back on track. And as she wanders the California beaches with her gay pal and married neurotic friend, Gracie finds herself desired by not just one but two men -- a handsome homeless man, and Kenny's dissatisfied has-it-all boss. Can she become more than Kenny's "starter wife"?
Okay, it has a different plot -- one that Shar Jackson might find emotional satisfaction in, admittedly. But the core of "The Starter Wife" is yet another thin plot, with a moronic heroine and lots of name-dropping. It's even worse that much of Grazer's name-dropping is out of date -- since this book went to press, Brad and Jen have broken up. So no one's worried about them procreating.
Grazer's lack of inspiration shows through in the storyline itself, which meanders aimlessly between Hollywood-expose cliches and middle-aged-woman-reinvents-self cliches. The writing meanders as well, as if the author is desperately trying to fill up space. Grazer even has the excruciating taste to name Gracie's gay pal "Will." It's not witty or cute, just embarrassing.
Perhaps the biggest flaw is that Gracie -- the wronged Wife Of-turned-Starter Wife -- is a pill. Despite the men going gaga over her, the supposedly smart Gracie comes across as a bitter airhead, obsessed with age even when she's feeling good about herself. Kenny is a cliche of the Selfish Ex, while Will is a cliche of the Lovable Gay Pal. Only Lou, a tired mogul who wants to know what people really think of him, comes across as a real person.
With more Hollywood tale-telling and absurd cliches, Gigi Levangie Grazer slumps even further in her sophomore effort. Sure it's just a fluff book, but it's really BAD fluff.

Book Description
From the bestselling author of Maneater comes a sexy, savvy, and wickedly funny novel about life after divorce and one woman redefining herself after years of marriage to a Hollywood studio head. With her signature wit and cameos of the rich and famous, Gigi Grazer tackles the most delicious and dastardly details of a divorce and recovery, Hollywood style.
Customer Reviews:
of the rich, famous and whiny.......2005-09-20
In the dizzying whirlwind of divorce, Gracie finds out that he's having an affair with Britney Spears (presumably in the months before she started slumming it with Kevin Whatsisface).
