5 out of 5 stars a tearful farewell.......2003-12-16

This book is the last six months of Far Side cartoons. Plus 13 new cartoons. They are phenomenal. And now, a moment of silence for The Far Side...

4 out of 5 stars Probably is the worst Farside book but still great.......2003-05-01

This isn't Larson's best book but being his last Farside cartoon collection before retirement is a collectors piece. The 140 cartoons in the bulk part of the book contain some classics such as the Inferiority Complex Sufferers cartoon and the ACME Wingbaby cartoon. The majority are good but there are some that you can tell were being left out of earlier books due to their standard. I love the two cartoons on page 80 (the end of the general cartoon section) that tell us The Far Side cartoons were all a dream of a man and the cavemen, cows, nerdy kids all looked like members of his family. The 13 full page cartoons at the back of the book are drawn after retirement and in most cases I would say aren't up to Larson's usual brilliant standard.

There is also an Afterword by Gary Larson that tells a tale his father drew on his kitchen table about a kid in school, drawing a box that becomes a lightbulb then becomes his mum bending over. Interesting story but I would have preferred a few more cartoons.

There are better Far Side collections than this one but if you own the rest you need this to complete your collection. There are plenty of good cartoons here.

5 out of 5 stars Far Side Goodbye MUST HAVE.......2000-07-13

For those of you Larson~FarSiders like me, this is a must have. You need to love and see FarSide on your daily life to understand and enjoy Larson's humor. This last book has more of what we all wished he could and would continue giving us. On a scale of one to ten farsides, and compared to previous FarSide books, this one is an "8". Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars PLEASE DON"T LEAVE US, GARY!.......2000-04-18

I hope that this is not Larson's last addition to the world of syndicated newspaper comedy. His humor is among the wittiest, most drop-dead hilarious stuff on the planet. WHile this may not be his most amazing work, it's still pretty damn funny. If you like this, you'll love his older stuff like the second Gallery. True comedic genious!

    5 out of 5 stars Handy overview.......2007-09-22

I bought this book to review my shots--and to give my fellow producer/director a quick education in terms and shot design.

The book is very good, giving 2 page briefs on various types of shots, including a list of films to look for them in, and a storyboard to show how the shot proceeds. the list of places where the particular shot has been used is especially nice, as it lets you go to the library of films and see how a shot works.

It is in a fairly large and somewhat awkward format being wider than it is high--it's better to keep this one in the office or at home to scan when thinking than to take out in the field--a field book would be nice, as it could be used to explain shots to the actors/subjects (I'm shooting a documentary and jargon is Greek to most people.)

    3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-08-24

But then if I'd really paid attention to the title of the book I'm sure I'd have figured it out.

While I applaud Jeremys' interests in movies and his desire to make them and share his 'experience' with us this book does not actually teach you anything about how to set up these shots. All it does is point out shots that you will probably already know. One thing that really does grate is that instead of consulting an experienced DP to find out the names of these shots he has come up with his own, which he feels are more descriptive.

I'd say that if you have a very short history of watching films then perhaps there is something you can learn from this book. However, if you have any experience whatsoever with a camera this book will prove to be a waste of time and (sadly) money.

The illustrations are good. Of a storyboard level and at least give you an idea of how to represent an idea but sadly the book was let down by the fact it didn't really deliver anything useful.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive shot guide..........2007-06-18

This book explains the language of film in a simple, visual style. In clearly grouped sections, it shows a large, clear visualization of the movement with a description of how it is achieved, and the name the industry recognizes for that move.

It covers all the basics, plus many unusual, technical or simply rarely used angles and moves, making it the definitive work for the indie filmmaker and above.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome reference book.......2007-05-14

I've seen this book by Jeremy Vineyard tagged as simplistic and cursory. If you're a super-hip film school graduate who's been involved in the industry, this book may not be worth your time.
However, if you're an amateur, like myself, this book makes a great reference. I recently shot a short film and used this book extensively while storyboarding.
Easy enough for children and a good reference for the amateur filmmaker. I've definitely gotten my money's worth on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, a must have for film-makers.......2007-01-16

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Arts and Crafts Studios and artists.......2006-11-10

Published by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, this thin (176 pages) paperback covers the Cape, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. It's beautifully illustrated with examples of the art created by the featured artists in the various communities, with recommended walking and driving (where needed) tours to take you to their studios and galleries. The maps for the Cape are not much help--they only show driving routes which anyone with a map of the Cape would have anyway. However the town maps for Nantucket and Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard show exactly where the studios and galleries are located so it is easy to find them and connect them in walking tours. There are also maps of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard islands showing the outlying artists' places. Written directions aid in finding the locations.

The areas on the Cape feature 17 pages in a chapter including Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee, Osterville and Hyannis; a chaper with 23 pages covering Sandwich, West Barnstable, Barnstable, Yarmouth Port and Dennis; a chapter with 15 pages from artists in Harwich Port, Chatham, West Dennis and Dennisport; 16 pages for Brewster and Orleans; and 16 pages overing the outer Cape from Eastham, Wellfleet and Truro out to Provincetown. The Nantucket chapter has 19 pages on studios and galleries and a page on local festivals and special events. Martha's Vineyard earns 11 pages on studios and galleries.

Each article about an artist or gallery gives something of the artist's history and describes her or his work, highlighting the particular emphasis that artist brings to the pieces. There are also listings of museums and theatres and websites and phone numbers for them as well as for other art forms such as Opera and Chorale groups.

With the first edition printed in 2006, all the material is up-to-date, at least for the present.

5 out of 5 stars Great Discovery Guide.......2006-05-20

Having been to the Cape a number of times, I was surprised to find out how much I had been missing.

Great organization and matter of fact accounting of great places to visit make this a very useful guide. Maps and points of reference help you streamline your travel, without missing a thing.

With more than can be accomplished in any one trip, it has been useful for many weekend getaways to Cape Cod.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-05-18

I highly recommend the Art & Artisans Trails of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. The book is layed out nicely, with different walks for each area of the Cape (and one each for the islands). Each walk has a number of stops, including information on the artist, the hours, the website, etc. There are also lists in the back of artists by medium, by studio, and information on at guilds and fairs. A very comprehensive guide, and a fun way to see the Cape & Islands!

5 out of 5 stars Cape adventure .......2006-05-18

As a frequent visitor to the Cape and islands over the years I was amazed to find the Arts and Artisans Trails guide book describing the roads and highways I've been traveling but with such insights into the history and Galleries hidden along the way. I can't look at the map or plan a trip without sneaking a peek at the Artisan's guide to see if I can include one or two on my next drive down to the Cape. This should be given to every visitor and newcomer to the Cape and islands. It's like having your own family or friends recommending things to do and see from an insider's point of view. Well done! Kevin Clancy Somerville, MA

      5 out of 5 stars A Vacation Must Have.......2006-05-17

If your summer guests don't know what to do or where to go, this is the book to have! It's full of wonderful studios and galleries, interesting information and lovely illustrations. I keep one on hand for my visitors and plan to give some as gifts. Even if you live on the Cape, you will find places you didn't know about...I know I did!

      5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2004-04-16

This wonderful intimate account of America in those great unwashed years between WWII and Vietnam is simply a fantastic account of a rambling 'damn the torpedoes' lifestyle set in New England and Europe among other places. Any lover of Americana will enjoy this fun memoir that pulls no punches in its description of real life, as it is and as it was.

Here we see a wonderful memoir of a large family living on one of the most beautiful vacation spots in the world, of one mans experiences with life and his connections to many fascinating characters both famous and obscured.

American history, New England coastal landscapes, and relaxed summer living are beautifully brought together in On Martha's Vineyard, a book of exquisite watercolors depicting one of America's best-loved island destinations. This book features watercolors of Vineyard landmarks and its famed pastoral beauty and village sites: the Chappy Ferry, Katama, the cliffs at Gay Head, the Black Dog, the Big Tree in West Tisbury, and others. Bowden has captured the true charm of the island without romanticizing it; these watercolors instantly transport the reader to lighthouses and salt marshes and boat-filled harbors. This book is an affordable must-have keepsake for the seasoned resident, the armchair traveler, or anyone who has spent time--or has wanted to spend time--on Martha's Vineyard.

To winemakers, "terroir" evokes the mystical melding of light, water, soil, air, and human touch that creates a wine unique to its origin. The Art of Terroir explores this mysterious phenomenon through captivating photographs showcasing the seasonal beauty of the Northern California wine country. James Beard Award-winning wine writer Rod Smith enhances this lovely portfolio of images with lyrical descriptions of the alchemy of terroir. The result is sure to appeal to wine enthusiasts the world over.

I just got my copy of this beautiful book, and I couldn't put it down. As I viewed each gorgeous photograph, I couldn't wait to turn the page to see the next. Rose's stunning visual images bring the wine country alive, even for those who are not lucky enough to live there. Rod Smith's lovely prose is an appropriate accompaniment to the pictures, but even without the text, the photos tell a story all on their own. Like a fine wine, the memories of the pictures lingered in my mind long after I closed the book. Unlike my other coffee-table books, once my guests open the pages of this book, they simply cannot put it down until they get to the last page.

4 out of 5 stars Sensational art, delightful memoir.......2005-07-12

You'd expect a memoir with paintings by a television star to be something of a vanity publication, but this is not - it's the work of a truly gifted artist whose oil pastels are world class. And the text (what I read of it in the waiting room of the doctor's office where I discovered it!) is a delightful, literate and fascinating compilation of memoir and history of the Paso Robles area. I spent an hour with this book and rushed home to buy it. My elderly mom, with me in the waiting room, is a nationally recognized painter, and she, too was very impressed with the art - and she has a tough eye, having juried shows, etc. What a delightful find!

          Product Description

The Methodist campground located in the small community of Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard has been beloved by generations of visitors and residents. It was here, in the years of the Civil War, that the first clusters of small Victorian homes were constructed, replacing the temporary tent platforms that provided shelter to the faithful who had come by side-wheeler to listen to the preaching emanating from the central Tabernacle. Today, these makeshift structures have been transformed into Victorian cottages of almost infinite variety, a colorful, decorative necklace of glorious, unrestrained architectural fancy and diversity. Families have gathered here for generations, not only to celebrate their faith but also to partake in the social rituals like Grand Illumination Night with its Chinese lanterns that have become an indelible part of our heritage.

These small houses, lovingly tended and idiosyncratically decorated, are splendid examples of the vernacular architecture commonly called "Carpenter Gothic." Adorned with endearing porches, furniture and flowers, they are reminders of a past when family life was close knit and central, faith was straightforward and uncomplicated, and twilight lasted forever, and here we see them beautifully recorded in 100 photographs, accompanied by a text describing the history, character, customs, and folklore of this quintessentially American community.

The true flavor of the Campgrounds has been captured in this marvelous book. Photos and script leads the reader through the delightful history of this endearing place. Watching it change over the past fifty years, I can say it never looked better. Although long overdue, the talents of these two gals brings the Campground to life. A book to be cherished.
