This is not the first good book that Krane did make, he had many before!
This book is excellent for any beginner wishing to study or know something about nuclear physics, but the level of the text somehow is advanced that I might say it is for MSc. students more than Bachelor, but everyone can do well at least just for reading to satisfy the interest. It has some questions after each chapter, but no answers at the back, but the author tries (as I felt in some questions) to make you make your own impression and thought about some topics even though you are wrong and makes you sense the real environment of the labs and how data are analyzed. After all, it is a good book indeed.
Handsome book........2003-01-17
I liked this book. The material was fairly well-organized, and very clearly presented. Many topics were covered including Quantum Mechanics, Nuclear Astrophysics, Nuclear Medicine, and more. Anyone who has had an introduction to modern physics can handle this book. It is very readable and presents much of the history as it covers the theoretical ideas. Also I thought it had a very good looking cover, and the apendices are very useful for reference.

I used this book for my Int. to Nuc. Phys. course in my undergraduate studies. I had a bad professor, you couldn't understand anything from him, and then I found this book.
This book is an EXCELLENT introduction to nuclear physics. It covers all major topics, and the explenations are clear and readable, and INTERESTING to read. You should have a grasp of undergraduate Quantum Mechanics for this book, however.
The book starts with a quick overview of all relevant QM results so you can consult the first few chapters if you forgot something.
A great book.
BTW there is a little typo in the shell model scheme of energy levels, but I don't remember exactly as it was over a year ago. However, be advised that one of the levels is wrong. But you can easily find it out - I did.

I graduated from Hacettepe University, Nuclear Engineering Department in Turkiye. In the 2nd class, we studied Nuclear Physics and read Krane's text book. However, though it was a text book, i used it as a referance guide many times and have still been using.
Want to thank for presenting such a worthy book into the life of education.

Would have been great if only..........2002-01-27
This is a very good treatment of particle physics. Unfortunately, its one of those textbooks where exercises are dispersed throughout the text and which form an integral part of the pedagogy. In other words, the reader must work through the problems as they appear in the book as subsequent material is based upon it; not to do the exercies will result in an incomplete and fragmented exposure to the material. Some might like that approach but I personally find it irritating and slows down the reading. As I mentioned its a very well written expose of particle physics but it could have been great if its format had been more traditional.
Best book for preparing for a test in particle physics.......2002-01-01
I love this book, mostly because this book told me very well about how to do every kind of particle physics problems.
Before you read it, you needn't have much background in Quantum Field Theory (while it should be quite good to read this book before studying QFT), and you can get almost all ideas of High Energy Physics in an aspect of phenomenology.
If you wanna prepare for a professional particle physics test (such as a PhD Qualification test), for sure this book is the best one to read --- you can pass any kind of these tests if you concentrate more than 2 days on this book.
And even you are not worrying about any test, this book is very good for a beginner to know particle physics quantitatively.
Do yourself a favour!.......2000-07-12
If you are a grad student in high energy/nuclear/heavy ion physics, experimental or theoretical, do yourself a favour and buy this book. It starts really from the begining (scalar fields, spinors, dirac equation, propagators) and slowly but steadily reaches the point of gauge field theory, QCD, partons, electroweak interactions , spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Weinberg-Salam model. Dont expect to find anything rigorous about renormalization. Chapter 7 has some calculations about running coupling constants etc. but most of it is intuitive (describing rather than proving) in order to give you a glimpse about these matters and serve as a tool for later chapters. Although I knew the basics of Quantum Field Theory before I read this book, it helped me understand topics like deep inelastic scattering, parton distribution functions, scaling, weak interactions,spontaneous symmetry breaking. Caution: It is not a Quantum Field Theory book, it is a particle physics book. If you are looking for gribov anomalies,ward-takahashi identities, and renormalization of the weinberg-salam model and stuff like that then this is not the place to find it. The book is about particles and their interactions. Its purpose is to prepare the serious student for more rigorous Quantum Field Theory books and give him/her the big picture of the standard model (the forest) rather than the little details of field theory (the tree). I strongly recommend it to any student in the field. The language is clear and the concepts are easy to follow. Its a down to earth approach trying to explain things in a clear cut manner rather than confusing the student with "big words" and terminology. A nice suplement to this book is the book by Chris Quigg (...huge number of references). In short, this book is worth its money ! Buy it !

Excellent introduction to Particle Physics. Q and L should be accessible to anyone with one semester of a standard quantum mechanics course.
As for graduate students, I'd offer that Q and L is as good a book to fall back on in a graduate particle physics course as is Griffith's book is in a Jackson Electrodynamics course.

A good idea, but overly equation-oriented.......2004-10-13
This book represents a noble attempt to put together biological and medical applications for introductory physics courses. This is not just a good idea but really a necessity now that many students in these classes are pre-medical (at least in the US). Certainly it represents an excellent source of problem material for those who want to create an intro physics course that has relevance to future doctors and biologists.
Unfortunately, most of the examples are "set-ups" in which a biological system is used as a wrapper for an equation the students are expected to have memorized. For example, when discussing gravity, the book has a problem on a diving hawk (hawks dive by essentially going into free-fall), in which the students are expected to use (1/2) a t-squared, but for which the students are not expected to estimate the effects of air resistance or assess the realism of the physical situation. I.e., the book contains standard plug-and-chug physics problems in biomedical clothing.
It would be nice to see a book that helps students to learn, on their own, how to identify the relevant physics in a biomedical situation. I can't fault this book overly, since there are essentially no examples of what I am looking for, in either the physics or the bio textbook worlds, save for Steven Vogel's outstanding Biomechanics book (highly recommended).

This book has a good content structure for anyone who want to study biomedical applications of physics. For biophysics and first year medical students, this book used in conjunction with a standard calculus or algebra physics book, will be a big help on a better understanding and application of Physics.

Wong has updated his first edition extensively. The text is directed at the senior undergraduate level or graduate level in physics. Unlike freshman texts in many fields, the style of the book is still akin to traditional physics texts. Inasmuch as it eshews the use of colour diagrams or coloured textual sections. But within the "plain" nature of the text is a huge amount of detailed descriptions. Both of theory and experimental results. At least one full year of quantum mechanics is needed as background. Especially in time dependent perturbation theory. The text is of equal value whether you plan to major in theory or experiment.
Also useful is the context in which Wong sets nuclear physics, relative to other branches of physics. You get some appreciation of interdisciplinary issues.
The problem sets in each chapter are nontrivial and worthy of your attention.

Honest, confusing realism.......2004-07-15
The characters in this novel are both fascinatingly "other" while at the same time easy to indentify with. The book captures how it feels to be young and in love, to be young and misunderstood, to be experienced and bitter, to feel torn between two selves. The novel shows us both hard and loveable sides of each of three main characters--constantly challenging our desire to judge and fix each character's nature in one place. The book ends ambiguously as if we really had encountered these people in life and then suddenly lost touch. The two seductions of a 16-year-old boy--first by a 30-year-old woman and secondly by a 15-year-old girl--are presented without any vulgarity but in a way that makes clear the sordid nature of the sex which is close to rape. The connection between sex, desire, power, and competition is richly treated.
Colette at her Colettiest.......2002-02-27
I can't agree that Colette is under-rated. (Not in her native France, certainly. After all, she was the first woman ever given a state funeral.) But this peculiarly intense novella does deserve as much recognition as the more widely heralded "Cheri" and "Claudine" books.
What stands in its way is a sophistication and subtlety so profoundly French that, even translated into English, the narrative sometimes seems to be in a foreign language. The nearest American literature equivalent I can think of is Henry James's "The Sacred Fount", which is also a love story explored on such a psychologically deep level that it can be hard to know what exactly is going on.
But even at her murkiest, Colette never fails to provide a spectacular mimesis of the natural world. The reader may all but recline in the flower-filled meadows, the warmth of the sun on his face cooled by fragrant breezes. Her insightful portrayal of what another writer called "the wrung loins of boyhood" can be considered a rich bonus.
extraordinary psychologic nuance and sensual style.......2001-11-09
This is a great book, with vivid characters and plenty of moral complexity. It is about the affair of a very
young man with an older woman, who uses him yet at the same time reflects the emptiness of her life and her
enjoyment of control. You also get a wider view of the consequences of their affair on the delicate balance of his other
relationships, particularly with his childhood lover. And the "relations" are handled with extreme dexterity and delicacy,
never going for cheap thrills. It is packed with descriptions of sensations and thought, beautifully poetic and dense,
requiring re-reading and reflection from the reader.
Taken together, it emerges as a subtle and unusually stimulating reading experience. Collette truly was underrated.
Warmly recommended.
Not my favorite Colette, but an interesting novel.......2001-05-02
Set in summer in Brittanny, Vinca and Phillipe are childhood friends who are awakening to sexuality.Phillipe has an affair with an older woman, a theme taken from Colette's own life. The affair has a lasting effect on the teenage lovers. This book is provocative, as only Colette could be on the subject of sex.
