H. Eugene Stanley Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195053168 |
Book Description
First published in 1971, this highly popular text is devoted to the interdisciplinary area of critical phenomena, with an emphasis on liquid-gas and ferromagnetic transitions. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students in thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and solid state physics, as well as researchers in physics, mathematics, chemistry, and materials science, will welcome this paperback edition of Stanley's acclaimed text.Customer Reviews:
A classic of critical phenomena.......2000-04-12
"softer" interface with "classical" thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, which is very convenient for beginners. Another important feature is the systematic "compromise" with the experiment, quite rare in theoretically-oriented books: it covers from the classic experiment of the critical point in the cyclohexane-aniline system, to the description of various spectrometers. Of course, "modern" topics in critical phenomena such as percolation are not examined and should be consulted in newer books. I might also criticize some lacks in the subject index; for example, the excellent survey of critical exponents in Binney's index is not matched in this book.

Alexander K. Hartmann , and Martin Weigt Manufacturer: Wiley-VCH ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 3527404732 |
Book Description
A concise, comprehensive introduction to the topic of statistical physics of combinatorial optimization, bringing together theoretical concepts and algorithms from computer science with analytical methods from physics. The result bridges the gap between statistical physics and combinatorial optimization, investigating problems taken from theoretical computing, such as the vertex-cover problem, with the concepts and methods of theoretical physics.

Statistical Mechanics of Phase Transitions (Oxford Science Publications)
J. M. Yeomans Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0198517300 |
Book Description
Recent developments have led to a good understanding of universality; why phase transitions in systems as diverse as magnets, fluids, liquid crystals, and superconductors can be brought under the same theoretical umbrella and well described by simple models. This book describes the physics underlying universality and then lays out the theoretical approaches now available for studying phase transitions. Traditional techniques, mean-field theory, series expansions, and the transfer matrix, are described; the Monte Carlo method is covered, and two chapters are devoted to the renormalization group, which led to a break-through in the field. The book will be useful as a textbook for a course in `Phase Transitions', as an introduction for graduate students undertaking research in related fields, and as an overview for scientists in other disciplines who work with phase transitions but who are not aware of the current tools in the armoury of the theoretical physicist.Customer Reviews:

Statistical Mechanics (Advanced Texts in Physics)
Franz Schwabl Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 3540323430 |
Book Description
The completely revised new edition of the classical book on Statistical Mechanics covers the basic concepts of equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical physics. In addition to a deductive approach to equilibrium statistics and thermodynamics based on a single hypothesis - the form of the microcanonical density matrix - this book treats the most important elements of non-equilibrium phenomena. Intermediate calculations are presented in complete detail. Problems at the end of each chapter help students to consolidate their understanding of the material. Beyond the fundamentals, this text demonstrates the breadth of the field and its great variety of applications. Modern areas such as renormalization group theory, percolation, stochastic equations of motion and their applications to critical dynamics, kinetic theories, as well as fundamental considerations of irreversibility, are discussed. The text will be useful for advanced students of physics and other natural sciences; a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics is presumed.Customer Reviews:

Evolution of Phase Transitions: A Continuum Theory
Rohan Abeyaratne , and James K. Knowles Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521661471 |
Book Description
This work began with the author’s exploration of the applicability of the finite deformation theory of elasticity when various standard assumptions such as convexity of various energies or ellipticity of the field equations of equilibrium are relinquished. The finite deformation theory of elasticity turns out to be a natural vehicle for the study of phase transitions in solids where thermal effects can be neglected. This is an essential work to those interested in the development and application of continuum-mechanical models that describe the macroscopic response of materials capable of undergoing stress- or temperature-induced transitions between two solid phases. The focus is on the evolution of phase transitions which may be either dynamic or quasi-static, controlled by a kinetic relation which in the framework of classical thermomechanics represents information that is supplementary to the usual balance principles and constitutive laws of conventional theory. The book should be of interest to mechanicians, materials scientists, geophysicists, and applied mathematicians.

Continuum Models for Phase Transitions and Twinning in Crystals (Applied Mathematics)
Mario Pitteri , and G. Zanzotto Manufacturer: Chapman & Hall/CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0849303273 |
Book Description
Continuum Models for Phase Transitions and Twinning in Crystals presents the fundamentals of a remarkably successful approach to crystal thermomechanics. Developed over the last two decades, it is based on the mathematical theory of nonlinear thermoelasticity, in which a new viewpoint on material symmetry, motivated by molecular theories, plays a central role. This is the first organized presentation of a nonlinear elastic approach to twinning and displacive phase transition in crystalline solids. The authors develop geometry, kinematics, and energy invariance in crystals in strong connection and with the purpose of investigating the actual mechanical aspects of the phenomena, particularly in an elastostatics framework based on the minimization of a thermodynamic potential. Interesting for both mechanics and mathematical analysis, the new theory offers the possibility of investigating the formation of microstructures in materials undergoing martensitic phase transitions, such as shape-memory alloys. Although phenomena such as twinning and phase transitions were once thought to fall outside the range of elastic models, research efforts in these areas have proved quite fruitful. Relevant to a variety of disciplines, including mathematical physics, continuum mechanics, and materials science, Continuum Models for Phase Transitions and Twinning in Crystals is your opportunity to explore these current research methods and topics.

Equilibrium Statistical Physics: Phases of Matter and Phase Transitions
M. Baus , and Carlos F. Tejero Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540746315 |
Book Description
This is a textbook which gradually introduces the student to the statistical mechanical study of the different phases of matter and to the phase transitions between them. Throughout, only simple models of both ordinary and soft matter are used but these are studied in full detail. The subject is developed in a pedagogical manner, starting from the basics, going from the simple ideal systems to the interacting systems, and ending with the more modern topics. The latter include the renormalisation group approach to critical phenomena, the density functional theory of interfaces, the topological defects of nematic liquid crystals and the kinematic aspects of the phase transformation process. This textbook provides the student with a complete overview, intentionally at an introductory level, of the theory of phase transitions. References include suggestions for more detailed treatments and four appendices supply overviews of the mathematical tools employed in the text.
