Book Description
The second edition of this monograph provides a systematic treatment of the design of modern hard disk drive servo systems updated with the latest research results to reflect recent improvements in spindle speed and bit density and other changes in this fast-moving field. In particular, it focuses on the applications of some newly developed results in control theory, i.e., robust and perfect tracking control and composite non-linear feedback control which are suitable for track following and seeking respectively. Emphasis is placed on hard disk drive servo systems with single- or dual-stage actuation using a voice-coil-motor actuator enhanced in the latter case by the addition of a micro-actuator providing faster responses and therefore higher bandwidth in track following. Other issues such as modeling and compensation of nonlinearities and friction in microdrives, disturbance rejection and resonance compensation are also addressed.
The techniques and applications involved include:
- time- and frequency domain methods for system identification;
- physical effect approaches for parameter identification;
- linear systems tools;
- linear control techniques (PID,

H-infinity, and other robust control methods);
- classical nonlinear control techniques (time-optimal, proximate time-optimal, and mode switching control);

- design of piezoelectric actuator systems;
- modeling and compensation of nonlinearities and friction in microdrives.

Researchers in data management have recently recognized the importance of a new class of data-intensive applications that requires managing data streams, i.e., data composed of continuous, real-time sequence of items. Streaming applications pose new and interesting challenges for data management systems. Such application domains require queries to be evaluated continuously as opposed to the one time evaluation of a query for traditional applications. Streaming data sets grow continuously and queries must be evaluated on such unbounded data sets. The proliferation of information housed in computerized domains makes it vital to find tools to search these resources efficiently and effectively. Ordinary retrieval techniques are inadequate because sorting is simply impossible. Consequently, proximity searching has become a fundamental computation task in a variety of application areas.
Similarity Search focuses on the state of the art in developing index structures for searching the metric space. Part I of the text describes major theoretical principles, and provides an extensive survey of specific techniques for a large range of applications. Part II concentrates on approaches particularly designed for searching in large collections of data. After describing the most popular centralized disk-based metric indexes, approximation techniques are presented as a way to significantly speed up search time at the cost of some imprecision in query results. Finally, the scalable and distributed metric structures are discussed.

If you disregard the age of the heroine, you can give this book to your YA readers and they'll enjoy it. Consider it a late bloomer coming of age tale.
Jeanne La Flambeau is the daughter of a famous family of chefs who run a successful French-Mexican restaurant called Oui-Si. Sadly, Jeanne can't really cook and can't even eat in front of people.
When her boyfriend Johnny (also her adopted cousin) steals the ruby scepter that's belonged to her family for years. Jeanne decides to take the painted skull that fits into the scepter and make the recovery herself before she tells her parents the valuable heirloom is missing.
Jeanne's journey allows her to discover her resistance about food and truths about her own family as well as how they fit into the Native American mythos.
The story is well written. There isn't musch world-building for a fantasy, since the author is using New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico settings as a basis, but the interior connection to the myths is fascinating.
Like every family, the La Flambeaus don't just have a crystal skull, they have more than one skeleton in the closet. All is revealed by the end, setting the kindred on vastly different courses than they'd imagined.
One thing to note is this novel is a reprint. It would have been written vastly different if cell phones were more prevalent as they are today.
I think "Coyote Cowgirl" could have stood just one more editorial pass. The character Miguel gets a hilarious name change in the middle of the novel among other small issues.

Lots of fun, this book was. It gets better as you get into it, unlike some which start to fizzle, this one starts to sizzle. Reminds me a little of the Carlos Castenada books I read back in the 80's.

Just read this book for the joy of reading! It is so great! You will have a tough time not reading it from cover to cover once you start it. The writing style is so darn enjoyable, the characters very real, even the talking crystal skull, Crane! Don't let this one get by you!
A Fun Page Turner.......2003-05-23
I loved every page of this book. It is full of great humor, fantastic recipes, exciting adventures, and wonderful descriptions of the Southwest. Once I started reading it I did not stop until I got to the end. I want to have my very own traveling companion just like Crane!
