5 out of 5 stars Optical waveguides in a nutshell.......2001-04-10

Fundamental to the science of fiber optics is knowledge about how light behaves in optical waveguides. Subjects of interest include waveguides made of optical fiber as well as planar waveguides in optical integrated circuits. Issues include the modal distribution of optical energy in the waveguides, nonlinear effects, and the ability of the waveguide to transmit large amounts of data without degradation or errors. Okamoto's book addresses all of these subjects in detail, forming a convenient single-source reference for the practicing scientist, engineer, or graduate student.

Okamoto's book is exceptionally well organized, and explains advanced and sometimes difficult concepts easily. The subject material and mathematical detail assume the reader to be well grounded in the basics of fiber optics, and able to work comfortably with differential, vector, and integral calculus. In addition, concepts such as Bessel functions, Maxwell's equations, and the nonlinear Schrodinger equation are used without introduction.

Although not formally organized in parts, the subject matter can be broadly divided into three categories. The first category consists of a basic treatment of waveguides in general, including the derivation of the functional forms of the eigenmodes in slab, rectangular, cylindrical, and coupled waveguides. I found the discussion on coupled mode theory particularly useful. Derivation of the eigenmodes is rigorous, with few simplifying assumptions. The equations are generally in Cartesian coordinates, making them useful for general-purpose numerical simulations, which are discussed in detail later in the book. Some of the more important equations should probably have been expressed in cylindrical coordinates as well, as this would make them more applicable for back-of-the envelope calculations. Making the simplifications is not hard, however, and there are blank pages at the end of the book for customizing it with these additional equations. Also lacking is a glossary of definitions of mathematical symbols used throughout the book.

The second category consists of specific, highly detailed and mathematically intense discussions about numerical methods used to solve the intensity distribution of light in inhomogeneous-core planar waveguides and fibers. Topics include the beam propagation method, staircase concatenation method, and finite element method. The discussions are sufficiently detailed that the capable and enthusiastic student should be able to write computer code that solves the propagation characteristics of virtually any arbitrary waveguide. Although commercial software already does this, the background presented in Okamoto's book will be useful to the user of such software, providing insight as to how the software works, and its limitations.

Straddling the discussion of numerical methods are discussions on nonlinear effects in optical fibers and planar lightwave circuits. The discussion on nonlinear optics is one of the best single-chapter treatments of the subject that I've seen, with quantitative explanations of solitons (light and dark), self-phase modulation (the optical Kerr effect), Raman scattering, and Brillouin scattering. There is also a brief discussion about optical amplification. Surprisingly, however, the book fails to discuss four-wave mixing. The chapter on planar lightwave circuits is one of the best quantitative descriptions of the arrayed waveguide grating I've ever seen. Overall, this is an excellent book that will be a valuable resource for scientists and engineers involved in fiber optics. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Optical Waveguides.......2000-10-02

This is a very good book for optical waveguide design. After the first dozen pages, the book dives into a very detail, and theoretical descriptions. I don't think it was aimed to the working engineer/scientist, nor the undergraduate student. If you're OK with Bessel functions, solving boundary conditions and are comfortable with describing designs with eigenstates, then this is for you. If you're getting into the area, this is a more advanced book.

Either case, it does belong on any serious optical waveguide designers shelf (there's a lot of material in this book).

5 out of 5 stars Othonos and Kalli v. Kashyap.......2007-08-30

A review of this book can really only be given in comparison to the only other book on the subject at this time, "Fiber Bragg Gratings," by Kashyap.

The book has a wonderful balance between the theory and applications of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), something that is lacking in Kashyap's book. The first 4 chapters (not including the introduction) give a nicely detailed theory for FBGs, including several sections in the "Properties of Fiber Bragg Gratings" (chapter 3) that are not covered in Kashyap's treatment. The book then contains two relatively large chapters on the applications of FBGs, the first on "Applications of Bragg Gratings in Communications" (chapter 6), and "Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors" (chapter 7). FBG sensors are completely omitted by Kashyap, so this book is far more useful to those working in the area (as the reviewer is). Although this book does not includes as much in the way of "Apodization", "Band-pass Filters", and "Chirped Fiber Bragg Gratings", as Kashyap does. Kashyap also has an extensive chapter on "Fiber Grating Lasers and Amplifiers", which is a small section in this book.

Overall I would say 4.5, but I had to choose 4 or 5, so I went with 5, as this book has been a great help to me. Conversely I gave Kashyap a 3.

So, if you can only buy one FBG book, I think this is it. But check the tables of content for both books and compare them, as Kashyap may be of more use to some.

My final though is that this book does have the feel of an edited collection of some 700+ references, were as Kashyap does appear to have written a book which feels more like a text book. But as a reference book I personally prefer the first.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to fiber Bragg gratings.......2000-07-04

I knew nothing about fiber Bragg gratings before I picked up this book. Othonos and Kalli cover just about everything you would want to know about fiber Bragg gratings, from the physics of the fiber itself and how the gratings are created, to applications (including some of the more exotic ones). The material is presented in an understandable manner, with sufficient text descriptions - not just equations that you have to figure out yourself. If you're just beginning to learn about fiber Bragg gratings, I recommend this book highly.

4 out of 5 stars There will be a need for this research soon.......2004-02-23

When Wavelength Division Multiplexing was first deployed on fibre routes, it seemed awesome! That a tiny glass fibre could transmit so much. It made copper obsolete, if it wasn't for the cost of the last kilometer to many end users.

How could we ever fill such a wide pipe? Well, actually, usage increased, quarter after quarter. And so did progress in the fibre field, as shown in this book. Now we have DWDM. Ever more capacious fibre. Some readers may query the worth of this research described here. After all, with the telecom crash, and the huge overbuilding of fibre capacity worldwide, what is the point of ever more gains? Shouldn't Laude and the rest of his ilk just declare a moratorium for ten years, say, till usage catches up?

Not so. The current installed fibre, including the dark fibre, will barely suffice when viewing or sending video becomes common over fibre. Even with advanced software multicasting to minimise the bandwidth usage, one can expect usage to just keep growing.

5 out of 5 stars Good basic engineering text on fiber and cable cable.......2000-05-26

This book covers all the fundamentals of fiber and fiber cable technology. The intended audience appears to be engineers at fiber and cable manufacturing plants. Most fiber books focus on end-users of fiber or designers of fiber electronics; I am not aware of any others written for this particular audience.

Peter Goessing has a long career in fiber cable engineering at both Siecor (now part of Corning) in the US and Siemens in Germany.

Readers who just want to learn more about installing fiber cable in the field or designing a building fiber network would probably be better off with one of the books by Hayes or Pearson that are oriented more towards end-users.

        Book Description

Bidirectional transmission over optical fibre networks may yield a large cost reduction because of the reduction of the network infrastructure by a factor two and the potential cost reduction by an integrated transceiver design. It may also provide a cost-effective way to upgrade distribution networks by adding bidirectional channels.
This book is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of bidirectional transmission in optical networks. It handles
      • physical aspects: the behaviour of the fibre itself in bidirectional transmission
      • transmission aspects: the behaviour and design of bidirectional systems and
      • network aspects: the influence of bidirectional transmission on network design. £/LIST£ Practical guidelines are also given for bidirectional system design.
Audience:This book is aimed at designers, builders and operators of optical networks, e.g. the manufacturers of optical transmission systems, public-network operators, developers of local-area networks, cable-television operators, etcetera. The intended level of readership is graduate level in physics or electrical engineering.

In her debut novel Sammy's Hill, Kristin Gore treats readers to an insider's view of life and love on Capitol Hill. In fact, the view couldn't get much more inside the Beltway, especially coming from former Vice President Al Gore's daughter. Still, Sammy's Hill is witty and engaging enough to prove that it's not always who you know, but sometimes how well you tell their stories.

Samantha Joyce, Gore's heroine, is a 26-year-old self-deprecating health-care policy advisor to Robert Gary, a well-respected senator from her home state of Ohio. Between endless work days, a grueling campaign schedule, and frequent trips to the pet store where she seeks advice on caring for her listless Japanese fighting fish, Sammy finds time to obsess over her new boyfriend, sexy speechwriter Aaron Driver. As things heat up with Aaron, Sammy's work schedule takes on a new intensity when Gary becomes the Democratic candidate for vice president. Along the way, scandal clouds both her personal and professional life, and our heroine discovers the often salacious underbelly of life on the hill.

Gore is best-known for her work as a writer on television shows such as Saturday Night Live and Futurama, and her comedic talents certainly shine through in this first effort. While at times the banter is overly constructed, and Sammy's neuroses can become grating at best ("...a sore throat was never just a sore throat--it was much more lively the beginning stages of Ebola, rickets, or wasting disease."), Gore does a good job of creating a protagonist who becomes ever more likeable as the book progresses. Thrown into the mix is a delicious sprinkling of hilarious Blackberry exchanges that round out this clever contemporary political adventure. --Gisele Toueg

This book was AWESOME! A real page turner and hard to put down. A MUST BUY!

              4 out of 5 stars Cute & Quirky.......2007-08-31

I knew that it was Al Gore's daughter that wrote this ~~ but that isn't the reason why I picked it up. I was in the mood for something quirky and funny and forgettable. This book fits all the criteria I was looking for. It's cute. It's funny. And it's not a Pulitzer Prize winning book. It's perfect for that long six hour plane ride or car ride or whatever ...

Sammy is a health aide for an up and coming senator. Her job is stressful and tense and she loves every minute of it. She meets a speechwriter for a senator that she didn't care for and her life takes off on a running train with politics, presidential campaigns, love, romance, intrigue, even Japanese fish, and friendships. It is funny, sweet and just plain cute. There's Sammy. Then there's Aaron, a speechwriter, who is just wonderful or so he seems. There's a reporter that she finds attractive in a Kent Clark way. Then there's her best friend, Liza, who is always falling in love with the wrong man. There's her parents back in Cincinnati. Then there's RC, her boss.

If you're looking for something fun and fluffy ~~ this book would fit that bill. If you're looking for something that is a who is who and who is saying what in D.C., then this is not for you. I don't think the author intends this book to be a tome of political intrigue. I think this book was written to be fun. And it is.

              4 out of 5 stars Sammy's Hill Review.......2007-08-13

I am enjoying this book. It is easy to read and great for those evenings or afternoons in a cozy chair with an iced drink. I like the way the characters interplay with each other and in several chapters they pop up again.

I would like to know more about the author, her bio in the book flap was very brief.

Well back to this book to finish reading it.

2 out of 5 stars cute, but no cigar.......2007-07-21

This young woman has quite an ego. I saw an interview with her, and she described her own novel as "great" while talking about a movie deal.

I wish. I'm looking for comic novels that are truly funny all the way through. I think it's hard to do, especially if you're relying on the quirkiness of your character to bring in the laughs, and especially if you write over 220 pages.

Quirky and cute, yes but after a while tiresome, this character is. I lost interest in her at about page 120, with 200 more to go. So then I've got to rely on the plot, which is not that compelling or believable. And you've got to have good plot when you've really only got a 2-D character, however quirky and endearing.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining for Men...Not Just a Chick Lit Book.......2007-07-14

This is a far cry from my usual reading fare (thrillers, spy novels, fantasy), and I was shocked to discover how much fun I had plowing through the pages. The protagonist is a woman every man or woman knows; she has plenty of neurotic thoughts and actions, and does and says many inexplicable things that are absolutely hilarious to read about because we've all encountered another situation much like the one recounted in the book. The political information is golden, and the behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in the Senate make for very informative reading.

Superbly done with lots of humor and plenty of heart. Kudos to Ms. Gore!

                      Product Description

Comedy writer and middle daughter of Al Gore, Kristin Gore has written a funny and moving debut novel about life on Capitol Hill as seen through the eyes of Samantha Joyce, a twenty-six year old health care analyst to Ohio Junior Senator Robert Gary. Hard working, idealistic, extremely competent as well as neurotic and prone to daydreaming, Sammy, as she's known to her friends, has little time for anything, much less a relationship. But in the midst of lobbying and late-night dinners at the office, she meets Aaron Driver, who is hot, smart, and sweet, and who, after a night of binge drinking at a bachelor party, proclaims his love for her. But how will Sammy balance her seventy-plus hour weeks with her budding romance, while keeping her best friend's slimy boyfriend from hitting on her, and making time for family, who insist her outfits match the centerpiece.

                          Book Description

The heroine of Kristin Gore's bestselling inside-the-beltway romp Sammy's Hill returns, and this time the laughs are richer and the stakes are higher -- at home and in the house (the White House, that is)Samantha Joyce is many things: Health care policy wonk. Hypochondriac. Lover of Japanese Fighting Fish (and of Charlie Lawton, her Washington Post reporter boyfriend). Jumper-to-conclusions. And when all these identities collide -- as they do most days -- the results are always unpredictable.Sammy's role as an advisor to Vice President Robert Gary (RG for short) has led her down some exciting professional paths, like when she accompanies RG on a trip to India to help open pharmaceutical supply lines, and some troubling ones -- like when the president secretly asks her to plumb those lines to acquire as yet unapproved drugs for his own personal use. Her job interferes with her love life, too, after Charlie is transferred to New York for a huge story just when she's expecting a proposal, and they find that distance combines poorly with Sammy's dedication to her work and her overactive imagination. And then there's the surprising -- though ego-pleasing -- series of passes thrown Sammy's way, culminating in a highly embarrassing photo of a Hollywood hotshot's hand where it doesn't belong, published in the pages of Us Weekly . . .As the dual crises in Sammy's personal and professional lives come to a head, and her ideals are put to the ultimate test, readers will be flipping pages madly, wondering what might come next. Because in Sammy's house, anything is possible.

This is a great read with a progressive flow. Living near DC, this is how I imagined it might be to be a White House staff member. The revelations about the White House aura in this book are very believable, but rather calm compared to the realities of today! Only two minor items; there are two typos in the book and the ending seemed rushed with straight fact, not as eleborate as the writing in the rest of the book.....looking for the next book....worth it, overall!

                          5 out of 5 stars Sammy's House.......2007-08-09

This book is great fun AND gives a good look inside the White House. Kristin Gore is very creative. amusing and informative as she tells about a staff person who is a hypocondriac and a klutz working under the vice-president Robert Gary, who amazingly is like her own father Al Gore. What a surprise. This is a real page-turner, and it stayed with me long after I read it.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great follow-up to Sammy's Hill.......2007-08-08

Sammy's House was a witty, enticing, laugh-out-loud follow-up to Sammy's Hill. If you liked the first, you'll like the latter. You do not need to read "Hill" in order to follow the story line of "House," but some of the humor will go unappreciated if you don't read them in order.

Sammy finds herself in some difficult and comical situations working as a staffer for the VP in the White House. She has a boyfriend from the get go in this book, and it felt like Gore struggled a little to create interest in Sammy's love life. However, Sammy is put to the test professionally and the reader is left to wonder how much her VP boss character is modeled after the author's former VP dad. I personally saw a little of myself in Sammy, especially her love for telemarketers and inability to keep fish alive.

All around, I loved every minute of the book, even if a little less than the first one. I would recommend it as a quick, clean, (little to no foul language, just a couple intimate scenes - skipping most details) light-hearted read. I hope to see more of Sammy Joyce in the future!

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first.......2007-07-28

Although it was a cute story with a little mystery to solve, it wasn't as good as Sammy's Hill. If you haven't ready Sammy's Hill yet, do not read this book first, there are a lot of spoilers. I wish instead of trying to catch people up on events that happened in Sammy's Hill, that the author would have spent more time developing the story lines in this one. It made the book seem a little too long. It is an easy read though, a great beach book.

If you are a TCU fan then what could be better than Sammy Baugh, Dan Jenkins and the FWST's own Whit Canning?

I always knew what a remarkable QB Sammy Baugh was but what I never realized is what a remarkable man he was. If you ever wondered where the heroes went, then look no further than this book.

When you combine the story of a true athletic legend with the wit and style of Dan Jenkins and the thoroughness of Whit Canning, then how can you go wrong?
