Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good read from a tehnology and market perspective.......2002-05-29

The book captured how an old technology like FSO is capturing market share in a fiber and copper dominated world.

The technology description was thorough with just enough market info to keep me grounded.

I recommend it!

1 out of 5 stars Whose this book intended for?.......2002-03-20

The book lacks a purpose. It bounces around really not making a point or a conclusion. I'm not sure who the intended audience was for this book but it certainly wasn't myself or anyone I know in the networking industry. The book is very slanted to the author's small start-up company and their products. It appears Ghuman is no longer at the company because the bio on the back cover states he "was" not "is" at the company. I checked the web site and there is no mention of him.

I suppose I agree with an earlier comment that better information on the topic is found in white papers freely available on the Internet.

1 out of 5 stars Reviewer from Academic / Technical sector.......2002-03-01

Having read the book, I tend to agree with the first two reviewers since most of the Free-Space technology is distorted to suit the authors' products. I disagree with the last reviewer from New York. More accurate FSO references exist for research, academic and development purposes. It depends on the reader ethical technical standard to select the appropriate sources. With less than three months of publishing, the book is already on the used book list....

4 out of 5 stars This book is for academics and networkers alike.......2002-02-25

If you are interested in knowing more about a technology that delivers optical bandwidth via infrared lasers through free space, this book is for you. It contains extensive technical information and telecommunications material for both researchers and network professionals. I know of no other single source that provides this much depth and content about free space optics.

5 out of 5 stars Baksheesh Ghuman.......2002-02-25

As a veteran in the industry I am familiar with Baksheesh Ghuman's many articles and presentations over the years. This book reflects his in depth knowledge and insight on the fastest growing technology in the industry. I highly recommend it!

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA DEPT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A375304. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Existing copper phone and cable infrastructure no longer provide the required broadband for today's emerging applications. Homes and businesses in the "last mile" require the same access to broadband speeds available inside the fiber optic ring. It is not economically feasible, however, to bring fiber optic cable to each and every home and business in the "last mile." Free Space Optics and Wireless Broadband Radio Frequency are two technologies gaining popularity as an alternative broadband infrastructure. Free Space Optics uses lasers and Wireless Broadband uses Radio Frequency waves to send large amounts of data from on place to another. Both are wireless technologies that use free space. As a result, they are quickly deployed, easily scaled, and cheaper to install and upgrade than wired infrastructures. These characteristics support missions of the Armed Forces in which wire-bound infrastructure is not dependable, is impractical to build and maintain, or requires a high degree of mobility. This thesis address the "last mile" problem including why current infrastructure will not provide a broadband solution. free Space Optics and Wireless Broadband Radio Frequency technologies are explored and discussed. Finally, an economic analysis of alternative network designs utilizing the two emerging technologies is applied to a fictitious city with a population of one million.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A064024. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Free Space Optics (FSO) is widely regarded as the next-generation high-speed wireless communication technology. FSO has demonstrated its capability to deliver data faster than any other state-of-the-art wireless communication technology. Today, terrestrial FSO links are able to reach 150 kilometers; unmultiplexed data rates of 2.5 Gbps have been achieved; Acquisition, Pointing, and Tracking (APT) systems have been successfully deployed between communication satellites; and carrier-class availability are being offered by FSO vendors. However, FSO has not seen widespread use in the military. This is attributed to the fact that military platforms are largely mobile, while the progress in the commercial arena has largely been confined to links between fixed sites. This thesis analyzes the features of FSO technology while being mindful of how these apply to the military. These features include the bandwidth, spectrum use, bit error rates, communications security, free- space loss, and power consumption. The limitations and challenges presented by atmospheric effects, directional precision, line-of-sight obstructions, and laser safety are also studied. A final section will look at the acquisition, pointing, and tracking mechanisms that are necessary for deploying FSO on mobile platforms.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A043224. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Free Space Optics (FSO) technology is an alternative broadband technology, which provides fast, secure and reliable data transmission. The FSO systems are being used for commercial systems between fixed sites and are being considered for military systems because of their inherent benefits, which are security and high data rates. In military communications security is the first priority. The small divergence of the laser beam makes FSO systems more secure than the existing radio frequency (RF) based wireless systems, because it is highly difficult to detect and intercept a laser beam due to the nature of the laser and the small divergence angle of the transmitter. However, FSO implementation on mobile platforms such as ships is still challenging. This thesis analyzes the feasibility of deploying FSO system on navy surface ships. It discusses the FSO technology and the latest studies in maritime optical communication links. In addition, the benefits and challenges of FSO technology specific to this study are studied. The final section discusses the required systems to improve the performance of FSO systems on ships. The thesis concludes that FSO technology, while not ready for deployment, looks very promising for the near future.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A178924. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis sought to design and implement a low-cost, portable, Free-Space Optics (FSO) communications device for Ethernet applications. Under some circumstances such a device would have utility at a Combat Operations Center (COC), a Field Artillery Position, or wherever else fiber optic cable is used in garrison or field. The design was based on commercial off the shelf components originally designed for fiber optic applications. Based on a 155 megabits per second (Mbps) media converter, the design used two fiber optic transceivers, coupled to collimating lenses to pass data over free-space. Sustained data rate of 100 Mbps was achieved with full network functionality on the optical bench with a low-power (0.5mW) laser diode transmitter without focusing optics on the receiver. The laser diode power(mounted on device), was measured with acceptable losses up to 300 ft during testing using a photodiode with focusing optics. The findings indicate that the system with proper collecting optics could be optimized for free-space communication at short to moderate ranges.

Since Free Space Optics (FSO) operates in an unlicensed frequency, and is a comparatively cheap, easy-to-deploy, and very-high-capacity broadband solution, enterprises around the globe have been using it as a means of connecting dispersed office LANs, and for redundant fiber backup. These applications are a crucial part of the market for FSO vendors, and have helped endorse the benefits of the technology; however, there are a multitude of other applications within the service provider segment, such as metro ring extension and Gigabit Ethernet backhaul, that will generate major revenue for the FSO players. But the deployment of FSO in carrier networks must be carefully assessed, as the technology has some inherent limitations: FSO is a line-of-sight (LOS) technology The reliability of an FSO link is affected by fog, scintillation, and building sway. Links must be constructed at distances ranging from 820.25 feet (250 meters) to 6,562 feet (2 km) in order to decrease susceptibility to interference.

                      Book Description

The suave adventures of a gentleman rogue—a French Thomas Crown

Created by Maurice LeBlanc during the early twentieth century, Arsène Lupin is a witty confidence man and burglar, the Sherlock Holmes of crime. The poor and innocent have nothing to fear from him; often they profit from his spontaneous generosity. The rich and powerful, and the detective who tries to spoil his fun, however, must beware. They are the target of Arsène's mischief and tomfoolery. A masterful thief, his plans frequently evolve into elaborate capers, a precursor to such cinematic creations as Ocean's Eleven and The Sting. Sparkling with amusing banter, these stories—the best of the Lupin series—are outrageous, melodramatic, and literate.

Maurice Leblanc's classic 1906 thriller pits France's notorious Gentleman Burglar against England's Great Detective in a deadly duel over the legendary BLUE DIAMOND, stolen by Lupin with the help of the mysterious "Blonde Phantom" and which Holmes has sworn to recover at all costs.

Actually, this book should have preceeded The Hollow Needle. The World's Greatest Detective faces off with the World's Greatest Gentleman Thief in a struggle to recove a fabulous blue diamond! The Gentleman Thief has a new sidekick-- the woman known as The Blonde Phantom, suspected of murder, known thief, and half ghost to judge from her appearences and disappearences! What's up?

To top it off, Holmes has told Lupin he will have him arrested in ten days. Lupin is no fool, he knows the detective only too well. Poor old Watson pays the price-- a broken arm, which Holmes, caught up in the heat of the chase almost callously ignores.

But despite all Lupin's artifice, Holmes keeps his promise. He just forgot one small detail-- Arsene Lupin. The Gentleman Thief isn't going quitely to prison for anyone-- not even a dear friend and opponent like Sherlock Holmes! Quoth the Raven...

This translation/adaptation of Maurice Leblanc's classic Arsene Lupin/Sherlock Holmes tales (Black Coat Press, 2005) also includes two additional stories by Jean-Marc & Randy Lofficier. The two extra stories are put in context with the Leblanc tales, in chronological order, and makes the continuity of the original Leblanc stories flow more smoothly.

Black Coat Press puts a lot of these "value-added" extras (extra pastiche stories, timelines, etc.) in a lot of their books making them that much more worth purchasing, in my opinion.

Bottom line: if you appreciate crossovers, you can't go wrong with this volume.

And for even more crossovers, and more Lupin and Holmes pastiche tales, try Black Coat's TALES OF THE SHADOWMEN.

This really isn't a renewal of the clash between Sherlock Holmes and Arsene Lupin began in The Blonde Phantom. Lupin has effectively removed Holmes from the scene by kidnapping him. Enter a new protagonist: Isidore Beautrelet, a very young reporter with an analytical mind amost matching that of Holmes, if I may utter such blasphemy.

Beautrelet manages to track down Lupin and free Holmes, whose misguided shot kills Lupin's lover, Raymonde de Saint-Ve'ran. But years later, when Holmes has retired to the Downs to keep bees (depending on whose line of books you wish to follow, The Raven walks all paths), Arsene Lupin visits him and forgives him for the deed. In fact, it seems Lupin never really held it against The Great Detective, believeing all along the shot was accidential. Their friendship, and rivialry, remains to the end. [Escape Not The Thunderbolt], an original story by Jean-marc and Randy Lofficier included in this volume, tells the tale. Quoth the Raven...

5 out of 5 stars The Battle Commences in "The Hollow Needle".......2004-09-12

In this first volume of a planned three-volume set, the reader is introduced to Arse'ne Lupin, the Gentleman Burglar of France. Maurice Leblanc made the fictional character famous in a series of short stories and novels just after the turn of the century approximately 100 years ago. Arse'ne Lupin, in a sense, was France's answer to the exploits of the legendary Sherlock Holmes. Various meetings between the men on opposite sides make up the two short stories and the novel The Hollow Needle" found in this book.

"The Hollow Needle" opens with Raymonde de Saint-Ve'ran being awoken by sounds of intruders below her room in the country castle. She discovers they are being robbed and with the Count unconscious, takes matters into her own capable hands. As the last person flees away from her home, she manages to shoot and wound him at long range. The intruder goes down, and then begins to crawl away as she goes downstairs to begin the pursuit. Once outside she quickly goes to the point where she last saw him and discovers that he has vanished. A search of the grounds and surrounding farmland is commenced by the servants with no success and by dawn the gendarmes are called in.

An investigation is launched by the local magistrate and numerous clues are discovered. Also found is a note threatening the young woman's life if she has managed to fatally wound the boss. The media, in the form of two young reporters, is allowed total and complete access to the case and every detail discovered. It quickly becomes apparent that one of the reporters isn't a reporter after all. Instead, he is a young high school student who is using the situation as a learning experience. Isidore Beautrelet is his name and he quickly puts together several of the clues leading the investigation towards Lupin and his gang. What follows is a cat and mouse game as Isidore, with Sherlock not available due to being kidnapped, leads the investigation on behalf of the authorities in a pursuit of Lupin. Lupin, master of disguises and plans, constantly eludes the authorities and Isidore while a fascinated nation watches and reads all about it in the papers.

Also present in this first volume is the short story "Sherlock Holmes Arrives Too Late." Originally written in 1906, it features the first clash between Sherlock and Lupin. The book is concluded with a short story entitled "Escape Not The Thunderbolt" which is an original story penned by Jean-marc and Randy Lofficier for this volume. In it, by following the writing style of Maurice Leblanc, they bring several story threads from "The Hollow Needle" together to provide a conclusion to the rather open ended read.

Unlike many mystery novels today, this novel does not feature gratuitous and graphic descriptive violence. While there are violent moments, they are limited and are used to move the story forward on a new track. Instead, what drives the novel forward is the mental process where deduction and reasoning are used to solve an ever-changing puzzle thanks to the constant efforts of Lupin. His answer is not to kill the pursuers and others that are witnesses. Instead, his answer is to publicly celebrate the chase, his ability to elude, and his ability to plant new false clues for Isidore and the authorities to chase. In this case, all trails eventually lead to the revelation of "The Hollow Needle" and its legendary secret involving the Kings of France.

While Sherlock Holmes rarely makes an appearance in the novel, the novel and accompanying short stories provide a highly entertaining read. The book as a whole combines a strong mystery, a villain that is so dastardly he becomes likeable, and protagonist in Isidore worthy of Sherlock. In the end, Beautrelet proves that two can play at this game and win.

Anybody intersted in crime fiction is definately in for a treat. Leblanc's tales are some of the best I've read, and Arsene Lupin is easily one of my new favorite Gentleman Burglar charcters of all time. While written in the very early 1900's and translated from French, the language reflects the time period, but at the same time remains very accessable and easy to read. These stories are also terribly clever. Lupin is a perfectly likable character who is always out-thinking and out-smarting just about everybody he comes across. My only wish for this book, was that there was a bit more in it. 150 pages can read pretty fast, and it definately leaves you wanting more, but it is an excellent book and well worth having in your collection.

A bluff! Some of my friends secured that old unused van and wished to make the attempt. But I considered it impractical without the concurrence of a number of unusual circumstances. However, I found it useful to carry out that attempted escape and give it the widest publicity. An audaciously planned escape, though not completed, gave to the succeeding one the character of reality simply by anticipation.

                                5 out of 5 stars Very Charming........2005-06-13

Just as Sparkster-chan did, I discovered Arsene Lupin and his many adventures through the detective conan manga. However, I also discovered Lupin through a certain master gentleman theif that has been stealing anime fans hearts for a very long time. Yes, I'm talking about Lupin III. I higly reccomend this tale. It is charming, funny, and not as stiff and serious as your typical Sherlock Holes read. Lupin is, after all, on the wrong side of the law. ^_^

                                5 out of 5 stars Great stories.......2005-03-31

I found out about Arsene Lupin through the Detective Conan manga, where the creator showcases a different detective/mystery character each volume. In the last one, he talked about Arsene Lupin. He also drew Lupin wearing a top hat, which, if you know Detective Conan, is something the character Kaitou Kid wears (Kid is also a thief). Kid is my favorite DC character, and I had to see exactly who this Lupin guy was.

This book is excellent. Reading through Lupin's exploits, seeing him execute a heist, talk his way out of anything, it's a blast. And I laughed and smiled much more than I did reading the Sherlock Holmes stories. Lupin's stories seem to focus a little more on humor, and all the while never lose their momentum.

If you've seen Lupin the Third (an anime that stars Arsene Lupin's grandson) or Detective Conan's Kaitou Kid, you definitely owe it to yourself to pick this up. The similarities are amazing, and even though I've been through this book twice and know all the outcomes, I'm reading it a third time. It's just that good. One thing, though... if you go looking for it in a bookstore, don't be surprised if they don't have it in stock. Amazon's probably the best way to go.

5 out of 5 stars Arsene Lupin - robs the rich and gives to the reader........2002-01-11

Published in 1907, Maurice leBlanc's book introduces Arsene Lupin, the gentleman burglar: thief of exquisite country houses; master of disguise; friend to the royal and rich; a man of impeccable taste who will only snatch items of 'artistic value', and from those who can afford it. His wit, style and daring make him the unquestioned hero of the book, easily out-dazzling his two detective rivals, the plodding Ganimard and the brilliant logician Herlock Sholmes. Safes, secret passages, jewels, high windows, impenetrable castles, 'impossible' prison breakouts, sensational coutroom dramas, romances on luxury cruises, nocturnal murders, chases through forests and empty streets - so many crimes and incidents and personae proliferate, Lupin seems to become omnipotent.

Although these nine loosely-connected mysteries are pure fantasy, their detail and context open out the Belle Epoque milieu in which they are set. One of the major themes is that the 'respectable' bourgoisie Lupin robs are often as dishonest and even criminal as he, indulging in the illegal speculations/swindles rife at the time or organising elaborate charades to conceal financial decline. The invidiousness of social inequality is a factor in Lupin's psychological make-up. The antiquity of French history and national character is in conflict with the disruption of modernity (telephones, photographs, automobiles etc.). The vulnerability of the bourgeoisie contrasts with a democratising popular press avidly chronicling Lupin's every move, making him 'our national thief'.

I don't want to get too solemn, such is the breezy pleasure of this book, but I believe 'Lupin' is more than simply an engaging riposte to Sherlock Holmes; Lupin is more than someone who pilfers from the rich. Whereas most crime literature seeks to re-order a violated society through a central, reliable, narrational consciousness embodied in the figure of the detective, 'Lupin' disrupts order at every opportunity. Lupin's facility with disguise is matched by his disruptions of the text, which changes narrator and point-of-view without warning, Lupin himself often betraying the reader's trust by assuming the first-person on false pretences. With wit, playfulness and a light touch, leBlanc undermines our certainties as readers, just as Lupin does his victims, filling each tale with alternative narratives, jarring tones, shifting modes, unfulfilled expectations. Lupin is always taking his bow, leaving the stage and slipping away, as terrified by his own lack of a recognisable identity as he terrifies everyone else. For omnipotence and fame come at a price - existential dread and sexual impotence: the penetration of homes and homosocial company must substitute for failed relationships with women.

5 out of 5 stars Pity the English readers.......2000-03-23

After reading the whole series in both Chinese and French, I pity the English readers who miss out on the Arsene Lupin series. This series is rated in Europe/Asia at the level of the Sherlock Holmes series. If you can find a copy, read it. It is simply excellent for any hardcore mystery fan.

2 out of 5 stars steal this book--please.......1999-02-19

Reminded me of an episodic TV detective show--interesting premise (gentleman burglar) executed poorly, without much verve. Leblanc is more interested in going on and on about how great his hero is--a matter of reputation--than in showing us how he works in any sort of interesting way--a matter of dramatic tension. Most of these tales have the transparent dramatic devices (how many "It's Lupin in disguise!" tricks can you pull in one book?) and anti-climactic conclusions of Grimms' fairy tales. Usually it's more important to Leblanc that Lupin did a crime than it is HOW he did it, which isn't nearly as interesting. There are a few exceptions, but basically this is thin melodrama, striking concept though it may be.--J.Ruch
