    Book Description

In this standard reference of the field, theoretical and experimental approaches to flow, hydrodynamic dispersion, and miscible displacements in porous media and fractured rock are considered. Two different approaches are discussed and contrasted with each other. The first approach is based on the classical equations of flow and transport, called 'continuum models'. The second approach is based on modern methods of statistical physics of disordered media; that is, on 'discrete models', which have become increasingly popular over the past 15 years. The book is unique in its scope, since (1) there is currently no book that compares the two approaches, and covers all important aspects of porous media problems; and (2) includes discussion of fractured rocks, which so far has been treated as a separate subject.

Portions of the book would be suitable for an advanced undergraduate course. The book will be ideal for graduate courses on the subject, and can be used by chemical, petroleum, civil, environmental engineers, and geologists, as well as physicists, applied physicist and allied scientists that deal with various porous media problems.

        Book Description

This book introduces some aspects of the development of the modern theory of dynamics and simulation to a wide audience of scientifically literate readers and shows how it developed alongside the modern electronic computer. Unlike some other general texts on chaos theory and dynamical systems theory, this book follows the work on a specific problem at the very beginning of the modern era of dynamics, from its inception in 1954 through the early 1970s. It discusses such problems as the nonlinear oscillator simulation carried out by Fermi, Pasta, and Ulam at Los Alamos in the early 1950s; the mathematical rediscovery of solitons in the early 1960s; and the general problems of computability discussed by Kolmorogov, Arnold and Moser, by Ford, and by many others. In following these developments, one can see the initial development of many of the new and now standard techniques of nonlinear modeling and numerical simulation. No other text focuses so tightly and covers so completely one specific, pernicious problem at the heart of dynamics.

              Book Description

The use of classical mechanics to simulate atomic and molecular motion has a broad range of applications in science and engineering. This is clearly illustrated by the contribution in this volume, which address problems of both fundamental and technological importance. The cluster, surface, liquid, and interface molecular systems considered here are complex, consisting of many atoms, and strategies different than those used for smaller systems are needed to represent their potential energies and to simulate their motions. The description of such strategies is one focus of this volume. The other is to highlight some of the important applications of such large-scale trajectory simulations to problems of technological relevance.

                Book Description

The book covers the fundamentals of the mechanics of multibody systems, i.e., systems of interconnected rigid bodies. A geometric view is emphasized in which the techniques and algorithms are motivated by the picture of the rigid body system as a point in the multidimensional space of all possible configurations. The reader is introduced to computer algebra methods in the form of a system, called Sophia, which is implemented in the Maple symbolic manipulation system. The first chapter provides a motivational introduction to the basic principles and an introduction to Maple. Kinematics based on the idea of tangent vectors to the configuration manifold sets the stage for dynamical analysis. The latter ranges from the Lagrange and Gibbs-Appell to Kane's equations. Coverage includes nonholonomic systems and redundant variable methods. The computer algebra methods included enable the treatment of nontrivial mechanical systems and the development of efficient numerical codes for simulation.

                Book Description

Chemical Modeling: From Atoms to Liquids examines materials in terms of the basic properties of atoms, molecules and polymer chains. In particular, the interactions between these fundamental building blocks and the intermolecular and intramolecular potentials are examined. Fundamental theories of the constituent particles are covered, introducing and developing classical mechanics and quantum mechanics from basics. These theories are then applied to modeling, developing models from both classical mechanics and quantum mechanics. The book aims to make this subject both appealing and relevant, whilst avoiding excessive mathematical rigour.

Carefully structured, the text starts by introducing classical, quantum and statistical mechanics, before moving on to cover the modeling of solids, gases and liquids. To bring the subject alive, many real life examples and applications have been included. This book brings together the often scattered and diffuse background information that is essential for a full understanding of chemical modeling.

                Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Adequate attempt at introducing modeling.......2004-01-02

The stated goal of this book is to introduce the science of chemical modeling to newcomers. It assumes the reader has little knowledge of crystallography, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, or computer programming; the four fields upon which chemical modeling is built upon. As such, the book does an adequate job. The math is adequate and well-documented. There is even coverage of the numerous techniques used in chemical modeling. And there are relevant examples of how modeling is applied.

The book could be written better though. The text is written in first-person, and would flow better written in third-person. The figures and tables/charts are good. There are adequate references to other sources that expand upon what is covered in the text. All in all, this is a good text to use in undergraduate chemistry / materials science courses to introduce students to atomistic scale modeling.

5 out of 5 stars Color enhances Richard Moore's already great BONEYARD.......2007-05-12

BONEYARD by Richard Moore features a slew of sexy and facinating characters, great characterization and humor, as well as superb artistry. Even though I buy each of the BONEYARD collections in b&w as they come out, I find that the color volumes are a must for my collection as well. This series is somewhere between a PG-13 and R when compared to Moore's erotic work, but it was this series that got me hooked into Moore's work. The color editions add more to the reality of the story, especially when depicting the time of day [or night] scenes and in making the already colorful characters come more alive. Highly recommended for teens and older.

5 out of 5 stars Mixes humor with very practical problems.......2005-01-06

Boneyard Volume Three is the third graphic novel in Richard Moore's horror spoof. Following the adventures of a fairly ordinary young man who inherits a cemetery filled with supernatural tenants - including a lascivious sea-woman, her Frankenstein-like husband, stone gargoyles who are none too good at surfing, and a beautiful 2,000-year-old vampire named Abbey - Boneyard mixes humor with very practical problems, even for seemingly supernatural beings. The IRS is threatening to foreclose on their home, and to raise sufficient funds, our heroes attempt to create and sell a swimsuit special featuring the lovely beauties at the beach (with an extra dose of SPF 1000 for Abbey). But there are fiends far worse than the taxman at work, culminating in a deadly showdown between Abbey and an even more ancient and powerful entity - the one who made her a vampire and knows the gruesomely horrific details of her painful past, millennia ago. Although a parody of modern horror media, Boneyard is far more than a gag story; it mixes humor and drama to fine blend and is one of the finest independent comics currently being published. Also very highly recommended and a "must" for Richard Moore fans are Boneyard Volume One and Boneyard Volume Two.

4 out of 5 stars Donning Swimsuits to Save the Graveyard.......2004-11-18

Michael Paris still needs to raise money to pay his taxes. The "swimsuit issue" is a go and Paris and the gang head for the beach where Glum will handle the shooting. The shooting and the Swimsuit Issue are handled with Moore's typical humor as is quite well done.

But there is more to this collection than sexing otherworldly beings in next-to-nothing. A certain seductress shows up and tries to sink her claws into Paris. Paris and Abbey play a little cat and mouse as they start to be honest about their feelings. The past of some of the characters comes up as well as more information on the Devil's current plans regarding said cast.

The series is continuing nicely and even the swimsuit issue did not detract from advancing the various plot lines. Clean art and storytelling make this an enjoyable addition to the series.
