Digital (or electronic) holography and its application to 3-D display is one of the formidable problems of evolving areas of high technology that has been receiving great attention in recent years. Indeed, the "Holy Grail" for 3-D display is the realization of life-size interactive 3-D displays. Obviously, we are not there yet, but advances in 3-D display allow us to make important steps towards the Holy Grail. The theme of this book is to organize a collection of key chapters that covers digital holography and 3-D display techniques so as to provide the reader with the state-of-the-art developments in these important areas around the world.
Book Description
This smooth introduction for advanced undergraduates starts with the fundamentals of lasers and pulsed optics. Thus prepared, the student is introduced to short and ultrashort laser pulses, and learns how to generate, manipulate, and measure them. Spectroscopic implications are also discussed. The second edition has been completely revised and includes two new chapters on some of the most promising and fast-developing applications in ultrafast phenomena: coherent control and attosecond pulses.
Customer Reviews:
Fairly good but not excellent.......2006-08-17
The second edition of this book is revised and enriched with new and hot materials. The concepts of "coherent control" and "attosecond pulses" are added as they become more and more significant.
The first 3 chapters of the books do not seem very useful. Although the authors tried their best, especially the discussion of "mode-locking" is not as clearly stated as Demtroder's "Laser Spectroscopy". More vivid, illustrative and tangible examples would be very useful.
The rest of the book can be considered good and in my opinion this books does not deserve more than 4 stars.
This short book is an excellent overview.......2000-03-27
I use femtosecond lasers in my graduate work, and I found this book an excellent source of review material in preparing for my oral examinations. It is not very detailed or mathematical, but has excellent phenomenonological discussions of a variety of laser properties and techniques. It is also handy because it is fairly recent. I found particularly useful the sections on amplification, semiconductor lasers, and ultrashort diagnostics.
This book is not a comprehensive guide to building and using an ultrashort pulse laser system because it lacks so much detail. However, the equations are explained very well, and the references seem fairly comprehensive.
The book is also completely missing a discussion of fiber laser and ultrashort pulse propogation in fibers. The section on nonlinear ultrashort optics is also far too brief.

Customer Reviews:
Still a great rerview of the topic.......2007-07-10
Although published a long time ago, this text is still a fine review of quantum-well devices, from various perspectives. The chapter by Bour on Phosphides is particularly valuable.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive, to say the least........2007-03-09
I have found this book to be extremely comprehensive and detailed, great for anyone who wants to learn both the basic and advanced concepts of lasers. The book is definitely for the more advanced undergraduate students (and grad students, of course) who have a background in quantum mechanics, and higher-level calculus. The translation from Italian is perfect. Highly recommended.
P.S.: In reply to the review written by `A Reader' below, `newby' is spelt `newbie' (or `noob').
Very good.......2002-10-22
Very good. I recommend it for anyone who works with lasers. Very accurate and easy to read.

A clear way to get into the field of laser physics........2002-08-07
Clearly written, without oversimplifying some of the
more subtle items (which are so often swept under the
carpet in simpler treatments of the field - such as
the QFT treatment of spontaneous emission). First a
clear and detailled discussion of all the aspects
of the working principles of a laser is presented,
and then specific lasertypes are described, all this
in a very readable style. Great book.
Review from Optics & Laser Technology.......2002-08-06
"...the student that is led into the laser field by this text is lucky. The text is excellent and filled with appropriate illustrations...Overall, this work will also be useful as a reference for the topics covered. The literature references are copious and appropriate. The text is well supplied with figures and graphs and for those areas considered in detail, the book is and will remain a very good reference volume."
Great book (both easy and complete).......1999-09-26
This book is extremely clear and even a completely newby can read it. At the same time, nothing is left halfway and the subject is covered with extreme care and depth. Congratualations to the author !
Book Description
This entry-level textbook, covering the area of tissue optics, is based on the lecture notes for a graduate course (Bio-optical Imaging) that has been taught six times by the authors at Texas A&M University. After the fundamentals of photon transport in biological tissues are established, various optical imaging techniques for biological tissues will be covered. The imaging modalities will include ballistic imaging, quasi-ballistic imaging (optical coherence tomography), diffusion imaging, and ultrasound-aided hybrid imaging. The basic physics and engineering of each imaging technique will be emphasized.
Book Description
You're on the run from the cops and need to disappear somehow. Luckily you happen across a secret ocean in the middle of Wyoming. An undiscovered world of pirates and zombies that, according to maps, couldn't possibly exist. But here it is, a vast white sea that is made of some kind of greasy blubber substance instead of water. To escape, you must join the crew of one of the two ships at the dock. The first is a strange black cube-shaped vessel called The Eye World and the other is a totally punk rock pirate ship called The Rotten Sore. Which will you take?
If you board The Eye World, turn to page 21. If you take The Rotten Sore, turn to page 22. But choose wisely! You could find yourself screwing demonic faeries and a cyborg dominatrix on top of a pile of treasure, or you could end up as lunch for a team of floating telepathic walrus heads.
Ocean of Lard is a parody of that classic interactive fiction series that you adored as a kid, now filled to the brim with enough f*cked up humor and surreal perversions to satisfy you as an adult.
Customer Reviews:
Crap I died!.......2007-07-12
I've never read a choose your own adventure book before. This book is written in second person, so you are the star of the show and get to make decisions at pivotal points about what happens. Each decision jumps you to a different page where the story continues based on your choice, because of this, you jump around a lot and would never want to read this book in order from cover to cover.
Your character starts out by seeking some out of the way deserted town while on the run from the cops (because you evidently molested some children somewhere) and discover Pirate Town. Your first choice is whether to board a pirate ship named "The Eye World", board another ship called "The Rotten Sore" or stay in Pirate Town. The first three choices I made caused me to die in really bizarre ways. But each time I died, I went back and tried again. My favorite ship was "The Eye World".
If you have a twisted sense of humor and want to try something different I would recommend this book. These two authors blended together really well and the story is one of the wackiest I have read all year. I think this book is the perfect sort of thing to take on a road trip and read aloud to your friend who is driving and have them make the choices. It's really funny and interactive.
Ech........2007-05-12
You know, it's a cute gimmick and all, with the "Choose Your Own Adventure" tie-in, but the writing just wasn't very good. It's something a 13-year-old may enjoy...lots of maggots and poop and pus. Other than that, there wasn't much to redeem it. Kudos for originality, but I was hoping for just a bit more substance.
Excellent Parody and Great Story.......2006-02-27
"Ocean of Lard" is a parody of the Choose Your Own Adventure/Destiny books we read when we were young. Over the top writers Carlton Mellick and Kevin Donihe team up to provide various different trails you can take to various different endings.
A man on the run from the cops finds a secret ocean of lard and has to join up with pirates in order to get away. This book pulls out all of the stops... There are bugs and pickle/monkey things, zombies, cyborg dominatrix, and much more! "The Eye World" is Mellick's story. "The Rotten Sore" is Donihe's. Illustrated by Terrasa Ulm.
Mellick's style is in full force here, and he finds various new and original ideas to explore with every segment of the book. Donihe is also a very good writer. This is the first book by him I've read, but I will definitely keep an eye out for him in the future. If only this were the beginning of a continuing series...
Repugnant, hilarious, vile, extreme, obscene, and horribly fun!.......2006-01-07
'Ocean Of Lard' is a rude parody of those old "build your own story" books. You're a child molester on the run from the cops, when you make your way to a strange place alongside an ocean filled with lard. As one of three original choices (board The Eye World ship, board The Rotten Sore ship, or stay in Pirate Town) branches off, you will find more and more choices along the way. (if you want to do This, turn to page XX, if you want to do That, turn to page XX) Personally, I enjoyed The Eye World the most.
Nothing is sacred to Mellick and Donihe, greasy lard, cyborgs, obscenely shaped islands, an ocean of fetuses, razor-barbed mermaids, walrus buggery, lots of blood, pickle-monkeys, man-eating logs, robotic bees, tentacles, zombies, and that is just the start of all the wacky, weird things waiting for you in 'Ocean Of Lard'.
This book makes Edward Lee look tame. You have to have a sick sense of humor, but if you do, you will be laughing your hinder off, just like I was. 'Ocean Of Lard' is perfect! Great fun when you want a break from serious horror, or just want to get grossed out. Enjoy! (but at your own risk...just don't eat any heavy or greasy food beforehand!)
Bringing me back.......2005-09-29
I so enjoyed this book because it brought me back to the days of my youth when I loved to read the pulp superhero Choose Your Own Adventure book. Now, there is finally one to the demented and weird.
Our generation thinks more in images than words. The baby boomer generation seems to have been the last generation to have thought in words and not pictures. I would love to see more novelists who do more illustrated novels. Gen X (no matter how much you hate that label, you are still one) needs more fiction with pictures in them.
