3 out of 5 stars NOT a beginner's book.......2005-10-04

The first physics course I've ever taken used this very textbook. If you are about to be in the same boat as I was, let me tell you this: this is NOT a good introductory physics text. If you're not one of the kids who took AP Physics in high school, you will probably struggle with this book unless you have a very amazing professor.

Most of the formulas are given as "this is the general formula, and here's how we derive the other formulas from this". There's very little explanation involved with concepts, and when the author tries they are extremely hazy. This book apparently assumes that you've learned every concept before, and that you only need a brief overview and a table of formulas.

Not to completely bash this book - far from it. Formulas are listed in an organized and comprehensive fashion, and useful derivations are given also. If I need to look up a physics formula, this is the book I use as it's actually faster than sifting through Google. Beware, though, if this is your first endeavour into the world of physics.

2 out of 5 stars What a Struggle.......2005-03-20

I'm using this book for a distance learning course in physics. I suspect it was not written for distance learning. I often find it hard to relate the answers to chapter problems to the explanations in the text. I also have a copy of Cutnell & Johnson's Physics 6th edition. The thinking in the latter is a lot easier to follow.

3 out of 5 stars pretty good, beginners may need extra help with it.......2004-08-20

i'm using this book as a main source for preparing for the physics GRE exam, and i'm finding that it is getting me up to speed for the exam. my previous academic background is actually math/german/finance, but i can tell you that the math background is what makes working with this book fairly successful. i'm pretty much a sucker for big, pretty books anyway, but i really can tell that this one is definitely helping me learn basic physics- fairly good examples, lots of problems, and interesting introductions to each chapter to captivate your attention and motivate you to continue studying. if you're a freshman taking using this book for a course, i would suggest you consult your professor regularly and get help whenever something is not quite clear- it's probably a royal pain in the neck to take physics I/II and calc concurrently, so i can totally understand those of you without the complete math background having trouble with this material- i know i did 20 years ago as an undergrad, and it made me really dislike physics at that time. i don't know what calc classes are like these days, but i would strongly recommend at least 3 semesters of calculus before embarking on a course that uses this book- it'll make your learning experience much more intense, and you'll get a lot more from the book and will be able to appreciate it much more. Oh, and you may just want to try and order the international edition from abroad (Europe, for example)- it's about $100 less than the U.S. price and still has the same content!

2 out of 5 stars Highly overrated.......2004-07-04

Alright, so of course this is the book required by just about every college in the country these days in their introductory physics courses---well, it shouldn't be. The authors certainly provide mathematical motivation for the concepts they cover, but certainly don't give adequate real-world motivation for concepts. Oh yeah, so, as one idiot reviewer who thinks he's some kind of precocious student said, this book helped him and his high school buddies get fives on the AP Test---WELL BIG DEAL IDIOT!!! GOOD FOR YOU!! I only managed to do that in my freshman year of highschool so I guess it must be really hard or something--*cough* Well, in the real world of people who actually know anything about physics or math or any field, getting a five on the AP exam in highschool isn't anything special. Basically, this book will prepare you to pass exams and standardized tests--it won't give you understanding. For that, go somewhere worthwhile---for example, the Feynman Lectures on Physics, all three volumes of which cost about half as much as Halliday and Resnick's book.

1 out of 5 stars is this a money-making gimmick or what?.......2004-05-07

Our physics department decided to switch to this book last year, and I have been trying to figure out which edition to buy.. "extended enhanced problem edition", "extended", "enhanced"? How about throwing in a student's companion text that contains "chapter extensions?"? What about getting the right Solutions manual? only 30% of the solutions are in it? And now I just found out they have published (another?) new 7th edition which no doubt will have a brand new array of essential supplements and extensions. Why all these editions and supplements?

    1 out of 5 stars Disgusting ripoff.......2006-11-21

Do you guys know that this book sells in Europe for about 70 bucks? That's HALF its price in the US and about the right price it should have. Then why does it sell for twice as much in the US? Because of the "cooperation" between publishing companies and colleg professors who force thier college students to spend unbelievable sums to get textbooks. I understand (but don't justify) the greedy publishing companies behavious, but why do college professors allow these crooks to go on with this business?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent to get the primer.......2006-07-05

Excellent if you are new to physics and need a straight forward text. The exercises will get to the point and are easy to follow. The shipments were fast and the condition of the book was good.

5 out of 5 stars Honors problem anyone?.......2006-05-06

This book is straight to the point. I mean this book would give you the most important concepts in Physics. The good thing about this book is that the exercises and problems are REALLY challenging. It would require you an absolute understanding of the concepts and great mathematical skills. If you don't have the solutions manual. From what I know the exercises and problems given in a Physics Olympiad is based from this book. Some of the question. So if you want to sharpen your skills in Physics I suggest this book.

5 out of 5 stars Still alive and well.......2006-03-28

More than thirty years ago, when I was an engineering student, my physics "Bible" was Halliday & Resnick, Physics for Students of Science and Engineering, 1st Edition. This is a book that has aged gracefully. While the basic physics concepts were retained, the examples have been updated in each revision to keep up with the technology advances. Now in its seventh edition since Walker started to collaborate with the previous authors, it is still one of the most enjoyable readings in elementary physics. I recommend it without reservation.

This is a huge physicals book that may be good as a singular source of general physics, but I found it to be useless in helping me understand anything.

    1. The exercises in the middle of the chapter were often the most helpful, but were easy to overlook.

    2. All equations are bolded, but they do a poor job of differentiating general proof equations from equations you actually use to solve problems.

    3. There were not enough visual examples of proofs that were discussed (show me or explain to me further what you are prooving).

    4. Pictures for problems sets were often not drawn to scale (and they didn't tell you that). I know that's not terribly important, but it would be better if it was.

    5. There were also lots of typos in the problem sets.

    6. If your class is using a newer edition, spring for the newer edition. Problem sets are numbered differently, chapters are in different orders, and some information is presented very different in newer versions that I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars Ideal for the A-level Physics student and above.......2002-02-25

A (new) copy of this was donated to my school by the former chairman of the goveners, who also worked in the local university's Physics department. It has proved invaluable for all areas of Physics, offering a more deatailed aproach then our normal A-level text. It has been expecially useful on the latest particle and nuclear physics, explaning it all in a clear and concise fashion. There is no question an A-level student can ask that this book cannot answer.
Also useful is the wealth of questions, including plenty of worked examples. The knowledge assumed at the start is about that of GCSE (being american, differnt assumptions are made). The questions themselves use the real world very much. ("caluclate the momentum of an armadillio that has fallen 10m" was one question that sticks in the mind)
All in all, despite the high price (~£90), I would thoroughly reccomend this for any A-level Physics student who has an enquring sort of mind (i.e., hates ithe phrase "beyond the scope of this course"), espeicaly if they intend to study Physics in any way at a higher level.

              Book Description

Here is the book that Tolkien fans have needed for half a century--a detailed, book-length chronology of J. R. R. Tolkien's complex tale. Whether you are a serious Tolkien fan or simply someone who enjoys reading the story over and over again, this is the book for you. It's the first totally new reference for The Lord of the Rings since the 1970s.

Beginning over 1400 years before the major events in Tolkien's epic, it describes, year-by-year, the amazing and imaginative background history that Tolkien created for his masterpiece. Then for the main narrative, it becomes a day-by-day reference, describing what each character does on that day and all the places where those events are described in Tolkien's writings. You can find out, for instance, what Merry and Pippin are doing as Sam perpares rabbit stew on the morning of March 7.

Probe deeper into Tolkien. See why someone as serious as Gandalf was interested in fun-loving Hobbits. Discover an exciting new plot, based on Tolkien's notes, that begins when Aragorn captures Gollum. Follow along as the Black Riders and Gandalf race for the Shire. Decide for yourself whether Sauron and the Ring have any ties to Hitler and Stalin. Explore what Tolkien believed about nature and technology.

A few facts illustrate how helpful this chronology is. Most of narrative is a deliberately confusing sea of next days and third days that leave readers as confused as the tale's main characters. The middle 60 percent of The Lord of the Rings gives the current date only once. In the narrative as a whole, the date is given only 23 times, or once for every 43 pages, and most of those come when the plot is moving slowly. That's why those who want to dig deeper and understand better what Tolkien was saying will find this book a must-have.

Perry has done a wonderful job in untangling the very intricate tale woven by J.R.R. Tolkien. Of particular help are the copious margin notes which reference exactly where Perry is drawing the information contained within that section of his book. The commentary made by the author is a welcomed pause for reflection on the events that are taking place and keep the book from being a mere listing of dates and events. I teach a course on J.R.R. Tolkien and have found Untangling Tolkien a valuable resource, since it covers the entire history of Middle-earth: what comes before The Hobbit and what takes place after The Lord of The Rings. Bravo Mr. Perry, I look forward to reading your other books.

An amazing accomplishment by a dedicated Tolkien fan.

That is how I'd sum up the book Untanging Tolkien. Michael Perry has first unraveled all Tolkien's "dates" -- which can be extrapolated from phases of the moon -- and then knit them together again in a cohesive outline, presented in much greater detail than Tolkien's own timeline (found buried in Appendix A of LOTR). By incorporating information from other Tolkien writings, the author of Untangling Tolkien collates additional facts about all the characters and the circumstances surrounding the War of the Ring, folding them all into this detailed chronology. He includes material that sheds light on possible parallels between Tolkien's work and events that were contemporary, and he provides original commentary that suggests some additional motivations for Tolkien's characters. Sidebars offer references to every source for the information presented and for each conclusion the author has drawn.

I found the format, with quick-reference bulleted lists and clearly delineated sections and subheadings, well-organized and easy to use.

NOTE: I read the third printing that was published in May 2004. Apparently the author has corrected many of the errors that David Bratman objected to (below). You won't find a better overview or a more throrough treatment of time and dates in LOTR than Perry provides in this book.

              4 out of 5 stars A Radiograph of LotR........2003-12-27

This book is layed out as a chronological record of the events covered by Tolkein's masterpiece with prefaces that explain the calender system created by Tolkein and its conversion to our more mundane (and possibly inferior) system. The type is clear, and margin citations clear and present for every entry. It's primary utility, at which it succeeds admirably, is as a kind of radiograph of Tolkein's work that reveals its astonishing complexity more clearly and allows one to admire, and more importantly, explore the book itself more quickly, easily, and deeply.

The book also contains copious notes inline with the chronology. These vary from informative to tangential, but at worst do not detract from the book's primary function. Mr. Perry is perhaps foremost as Lewis scholar, and so C.S. Lewis, a close acquaintance and friend of Tolkein, makes a number of appearances. Also making appearances in the notes are William Shakespeare and Winston Churchill.

All in all, a unique book which will save anyone who wants to do an in depth study of LotR a lot of time.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Tolkien Reference Work.......2003-12-21

Superb, exhaustive chronology of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga. Perry does a superior job in untangling a number of thorny chronological issues in Tolkien's narrative, and he employs some fine literary detective work in reconstructing what events are happening across Middle Earth on any given date. Especially admirable is his reconstruction of how much moonlight there was during each day of Frodo and Sam's journey into Mordor.

In addition to chronology, Perry supplies a lot of background information about Tolkien's themes and sources, as well as biographical tidbits about Tolkien. For example, there are fascinating discussions of Tolkien's views of technology, freedom, and totalitarianism. Perry also discusses Tolkien's stance toward the misuse of Germanic myths by the Nazis.

This is a great resource for Tolkien-lovers everywhere.

1 out of 5 stars a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia.......2003-12-21

A year-by-year, later day-by-day, chronicle of the war against Sauron from the founding of the Shire to the glorious conclusion seems at the outset like a good idea. Perry calls LOTR's Appendix B, the Tale of Years, "far from complete" but it covers the whole period: what he means is that it's not detailed enough for him. Appendix B won't tell you which day Sam cooked coney for Frodo; Perry will.

But alas, the book does not stop there. The entries are written as bullet lists like a PowerPoint presentation, and many add pointless little flowcharts such as two-generation family trees. They reduce Tolkien's magnificently complex subcreation into a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia. And each yearly or daily entry comes with its commentary, whether directly relevant, side points, broader considerations, or dogmatic essays in applicability. The unrelieved banality and inappropriateness of these must be read to be believed; as also the author's clumsy, grammatically inept style, and his smug superiority to the characters. (He frequently criticizes the good guys' "blunders," all of them more complex than he implies.)

There's actually some good chronological analysis and speculation hiding in here. But how can someone who knows his Tolkien that well say that the wizards were Valar, or that Rohan gave Isengard to Saruman (it wasn't theirs to give, and Saruman was made its warden, not a freeholder), that Boromir and Faramir had a sibling rivalry (Tolkien specifically says not), or suggest that Galadriel should have sent daily eagles to check up on the Fellowship?

These are not isolated examples: the bloopers and misconceived ideas go on and on. The whole book is like that: it has the soul of a PowerPoint presentation. I can't recommend it on any terms.

In the district of Shire in the Third Age of Middle Earth live a curious group of individuals called hobbits. Just three feet tall, with a layer of shaggy fur covering their feet, these creatures prefer to live underground, and until recent years, had stayed away from the ruin and despair that had befallen the rest of the world. In The Hobbit, we were introduced to one such character, Bilbo Baggins. In this sequel, Baggins' story continues as Bilbo's nephew Frodo attempts to destroy a Ring--an evil object able to debase even the most pure of heart--before the wicked Sauron. In this first volume of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Tolkien lays the groundwork for one of the most enduring tales of the battle between good and evil written in modern times.

              Book Description

“Irresistible. . . The charming voice of Tolkien, bringing Middle English accenting to the craggy characters of Middle Earth. . . shows how much these works were born - and lived - in the creator's imagination.” - Publishers Weekly

              J. R. R. Tolkien, in this extraordinary rare recording, will lead you in prose, poems, and song into the fantastic world of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, places of enchantment you'll want to return to again and again - that is, if you're ever able to leave them in the first place!

This audio is based on a tape recording that Tolkien made in August 1952. The Lord of the Rings, on which he'd worked for more than 14 years, had been refused by publishers and he had almost given up hope of ever seeing it in print. But this recording made him believe in it again - enough to prompt him to send it to a former pupil who had become a publisher. The result was that even during his lifetime more than three million copies were sold.

The next to last piece on side two is an unpublished poem that was apparently originally intended for inclusion in The Fellowship of the Ring, Book Two, Chapter VII, “The Mirror of Galadriel.”

              “A treat!”  - Philadelphia Inquirer

3 out of 5 stars Middle-earth poems read by Tolkien himself.......1998-10-15

On this cassette, J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of The Rings" reads one chapter from "The Hobbit", 'Riddles in the dark'. He also sing his own poems from "The Lord of the ring" (the first book).

A great thing for Tolkien-fans, but probably not a thing for the usual reader. The length of the cassette is approx. 60 minutes.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......1998-10-06

I think that this book shows great literature in the kinds of books young adults love to read.It is a very inspiring book, it made me want to read all of his other books. It made me want to write some like it too.

              5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......1998-03-24

One of the greatest children's books and the beginning of the best work of fantasy ever written read aloud by the author himself; what could be better? Introduce these classics to your kids on a long drive in the car. Listen to them yourself while you're soaking in the bathtub. Truly luxurious, in any case. Discover or rediscover, what a fabulous addition to your music cassettes.
