    Book Description

In 1905, Einstein's Annus Mirabilis, Albert Einstein made three discoveries concerning the foundations of nature which form the basis of his fame as a physicist. These revolutionary papers on the light-quantum hypothesis, Brownian motion, and special relativity, were published in the journal "Annalen der Physik". All three are now established as pillars of modern science and its applications in technology and are an indispensable part of the modern world.
This volume presents some of the most significant original papers which Albert Einstein ever wrote. It includes the facsimiles of the three revolutionary papers of 1905. In addition it contains papers which show the consequences of the ground-breaking ideas of these seminal papers from E=mc² to the quantum theory of specific heats. It also features Einstein's first exposition of his new general theory of relativity.
Introducing the original German papers the science historians Jürgen Renn (MPI for the History of Science, Berlin), David C. Cassidy (Hofstra University, Hempstead), Michel Janssen (University of Minnesota), and Robert Rynasiewicz (John Hopkins University) complement and comment the collection with topical articles.

      Book Description

Even if the subject is a long-standing one, this is the first monograph on this field. On the one hand, this book is intended to give a rather wide review on this field, both in a historical and pedagogical perspective; on the other hand, it aims at critically re-examining and discussing the most controversial issues. For instance, according to some authors the celebrated Sagnac effect is a disproval of the theory of relativity applied to rotating frames; according to others, it is an astonishing experimental evidence of the relativistic theory. In order to give the reader a deeper insight into this research field, the contributing authors discuss their opinions on the main subjects in an enthralling virtual round table: in this way, the reader can get a direct comparison of the various viewpoints on the most controversial and interesting topics. This is particularly expedient, since the differences in the various approaches are often based upon subtleties that can be understood only by a direct comparison of the underlying hypotheses.

        Book Description

Ever since Newton created dynamics, there has been controversy about its foundations. Are space and time absolute? Do they form a rigid but invisible framework and container of the universe? Or are space, time, and motion relative? If so, does Newton's 'framework' arise through the influence of the universe at large, as Ernst Mach suggested? Einstein's aim when creating his general theory of relativity was to demonstrate this and thereby implement 'Mach's Principle'. However, it is widely believed that he achieved only partial success. This question of whether motion is absolute or relative has been a central issues in philosophy; the nature of time has perennial interest. Current attempts to create a quantum description of the whole universe keep these issues at the cutting edge of modern research. Written by the world's leading expert on Mach's Principle, The Discovery of Dynamics is a highly original account of the development of notions about space, time, and motion. Widely praised in its hardback version, it is one of the fullest and most readable accounts of the astronomical studies that culminated in Kepler's laws of planetary motion and of the creation of dynamics by Galileo, Descartes, Huygens, and Newton. Originally published as Absolute or Relative Motion?, Vol. 1: The Discovery of Dynamics (Cambridge), The Discovery of Dynamics provides the technical background to Barbour's recently published The End of Time, in which he argues that time disappears from the description of the quantum universe.

              Book Description

The Poincaré Seminar is held twice a year at the Institute Henri Poincaré in Paris. The goal of this seminar is to provide up-to-date information about general topics of great interest in physics. Both the theoretical and experimental results are covered, with some historical background. Particular care is devoted to the pedagogical nature of the presentation.
This volume is devoted to Einstein's 1905 papers and their legacy. After a presentation of Einstein's epistemological approach to physics, and the genesis of special relativity, a centenary perspective is offered. The geometry of relativistic spacetime is explained in detail. Single photon experiments are presented, as a spectacular realization of Einstein's light quanta hypothesis. A previously unpublished lecture by Einstein, which presents an illuminating point of view on statistical physics in 1910, at the dawn of quantum mechanics, is reproduced. The volume ends with an essay on the historical, physical and mathematical aspects of Brownian motion.

Sub-Title: Poincar Seminar 2005 (Progress in Mathematical Physics) ==In 1905 Einstein, then an unknown physicist, published three papers in a single issue of the most important physics journal in Germany. ==One of thse papers would have earned him an honorable mention in physical chemistry textbooks. One (on the basic theory of how TV picture tubes work) got him a Nobel Prize . The third was the Theory of Relativity. ==In 2005 a conference was held with the subject to be Einstein's 1905 papers. This book is a reprint of the papers given at that conference. The papers vary from a previously unpublished paper Einstein wrote in 1910. Through some reports on the current state of research in the three subjects

My favorite was a paper on how Einstein came up with his theory. There are lots of guesses:

a sudden moment of brilliant insight,
the fact that experiments over the previous twenty or so years and various theories that resolved them allowed Einstein to simply put them together ,
there's the point of view that he reached his theory by a philosophical criticism of Newton's laws ,
there's a new theory that his first wife (who was probably a better mathematician than he) was really responsible ,
the fact that tensor calculus had just been invented and was used in the proof.

The answer, of course, is that we don't know what make genius. Yes there were cracks in Newtonian physics, but all the other physicists of the time knew about them. None of them put it all together.

This is not a book for the casual reader. But for the interested reader it is fascinating.

Most people are curious; what is it like to work as an escort? According to numerous sex surveys, one of women's top fantasies is to be paid for sex. But escort work is not as simple as money for sex. Brooks, a former escort, has written a myth-exploding examination of what escort work requires from the escort while creating an honest and humane vision of a mysterious, maligned business.

The book is not a recruitment tool because the job is not for everyone. The Foundation is a reference written to create a realistic awareness of the pitfalls and bonuses of escort work for current and future escorts, as well as the curious public. Ultimately, safe and sane escort work leads to happier, healthier escorts. (And happy escorts make for happy clients.)

This purchase was a way to delve into the lifestyle of an escort, since they've been involved in many sexual scandals lately. I wanted to find the value and thrill these men in the public eye have found in their encounters with these women. This was bought and read with an open mind, truly no expectations. I read it as a professional business woman, a mother, a wife, a daughter and a sexual and sensual being. There were some interesting revelations and candid discussions which opened my eyes to situations I was ignorant of. Her words were biting and cut-throat at times, but as she claims, it's about business not emotions. Kudos! However, I felt that it read like a chapter book for a 3rd grader, it was condescending, drab and simply not very well written. Granted this wasn't aiming to become the next literary accomplishment, but I just expect more from a book if someone, somewhere, felt it was worthy enough to publish. Interesting read, not certain that it would do to much to help anyone who MAY want to break into this field. It seems that the basic business information she provides is common sense to begin with.

                    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2007-08-17

The Internet Escort's Handbook is truly a well thought out book written n in a holistic matter by an ex escort for all girls who are currently working in the industry, keen or curious about entering the industry. It gives an insight of what it is and what goes on in this industry; asks a lot of provocative questions; provides useful tips. I would strongly recommend this as the ONE resource you should read. I can't wait for the other books in this series to be out.

4 out of 5 stars So you want to get started?.......2007-08-11

Thought the book by Amanda Brooks was well put together. Gives you ideas of what you need to do if you chose to go into the business. But, it does not stop there. Need to go to Book 2 which is not available yet. I do recommend the book for starters.

                    5 out of 5 stars highly educational.......2007-07-05

This is not a sex book. The style is simple and direct. there are lots of very interesting topics. I loved the part about "taking care of physical appearance". This does apply to women in general, not only escort business. The part about protecting yourself from STD is a little paranoiac but since this job is exposed to high risks, it is good to know what the risks are. I would recommend this book for all women and men (even if this is mostly for a women audience), curious about this underground world. It is more about the facts and the technical aspect than about the morality, although the author mentions the psychological part and the fact that it often leads to a double life. This book is intended to be a how to guide, but it can be read for entertainment only as well. I am a married man and I have more respect for these women after reading this book. They are normal women, often educated and running a home business, with all the administrative part of it.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!.......2007-06-19

I have to say that Ms. Brooks hit it on the head! This book is a perfect read for anyone that was interested in this line of work, how and where to start! She dispels the myths of drug addicted, sexual abused women are the only ones in this profession. She gives common sense answers to questions that the average person may not have thought of! Gracious and beautifully written, this book pays homage to the women that have gone before and prepared the foundation. It sheds light on the facts (and fictions), gives hope and laughter to anyone who reads this book. This book is not for everyone, but for everyone who is privy to it, it is a joy to read! I truly enjoyed it!

I thought this book was rather predictable. Another Sophie Kinsella, Candace Bushnell knock off want-to-be. The author tends to be a bit cliche and verbose, and I found myself often skimming over paragraphs to get to the point.

However, it's the perfect brainless read for summertuime fun!

2 out of 5 stars Fun, But Seriously Shallow and Unrealistic.......2004-06-06

"Diary of a Working Girl" had a very promising beginning, but after a while things just got ridiculous. The book tells the story of Lane Silverman, a recently-dumped-by-her-boyfriend, twenty-something year-old who lives in New York City, and writes magazine articles for no-name and little known publications. At the beginning of the book, Lane is trying to break into a big-name magazine, but keeps getting rejected. That is, until suddenly she stumbles upon the perfect idea for an article, which is approved by the Editor-in-Chief at Cosmopolitan magazine. The article idea is to explore love in the workplace. Lane must somehow land an office job and a new man within 2 months. And keep a diary about it.

Sounds like a great idea for a story, right? It lays the foundation for an exciting book detailing the struggle of getting and keeping a new job and man, right? Of course it does. However, sadly enough, this is where "Diary of a Working Girl" begins speeding downhill at an alarming rate. For the rest of the book fails to deliver anything solid or realistic, or even interesting. The book also contains an awful lot of speculation and rambling that failed to keep my attention for long.

I found most of the story ridiculous and the main character self-absorbed and shallow. Things were just too good-to-be-true, and I couldn't once sympathize with Lane. I seriously wonder what this book was written for? Where is the suspense? I do admit in the beginning of the book, it appeared the story would be interesting with Lane having trouble thinking of great article ideas and having editors turn them down, but it didn't last long.

Overall I was disappointed, because even though the book is fiction, it should have something realistic and plausible in it. But it doesn't.

What a great book! I literally could not put it down. I loved the author's writing style and was laughing out loud at several different points throughout the story. I will definitely be recommending this book to my girlfriends and will be on the lookout for more from this author!

3 out of 5 stars Although I love happy endings.......2004-05-27

I found that I only read to the end because I wanted to read the obvious happy ending. Already stated is the unecessary reference to other authors which displeased me. In addition, the use of the word pregnant was drained, and I didn't end the book with much respect for the Lane. However, I was happy that she found her M&M. Other than that it was sort of weak.
