Book Description
Complex hyperbolic geometry is a particularly rich area of study, enhanced by the confluence of several areas of research including Riemannian geometry, complex analysis, symplectic and contact geometry, Lie group theory, and harmonic analysis. The boundary of complex hyperbolic geometry, known as spherical CR or Heisenberg geometry, is equally rich, and although there exist accounts of analysis in such spaces there is currently no account of their geometry. This book redresses the balance and provides an overview of the geometry of both the complex hyperbolic space and its boundary. Motivated by applications of the theory to geometric structures, moduli spaces and discrete groups, it is designed to provide an introduction to this fascinating and important area and invite further research and development.

Book Description
Flavors of Geometry is a collection of lectures on four geometrically-influenced fields of mathematics that have experienced great development in recent years. It presents chapters by masters in their fields on hyperbolic geometry, dynamics in several complex variables, convex geometry, and volume estimation. Each lecture begins with a discussion of elementary concepts, examines the highlights of the field, and concludes with a look at more advanced material. The style and presentation of the chapters are clear and accessible, and many of the lectures are richly illustrated. The book includes bibiliographies and indexes to encourage further reading. It will be an influential resource for graduate students and advanced undergraduates in mathematics.

Product Description
The first edition of this influential book, published in 1970, opened up a completely new field of invariant metrics and hyperbolic manifolds. The large number of papers on the topics covered by the book written since its appearance led Mathematical Reviews to create two new subsections "invariant metrics and pseudo-distances" and "hyperbolic complex manifolds" within the section "holomorphic mappings". The invariant distance introduced in the first edition is now called the "Kobayashi distance", and the hyperbolicity in the sense of this book is called the "Kobayashi hyperbolicity" to distinguish it from other hyperbolicities. This book continues to serve as the best introduction to hyperbolic complex analysis and geometry and is easily accessible to students since very little is assumed. The new edition adds comments on the most recent developments in the field.
Book Description
For the past 25 years, the Geometrization Program of Thurston has been a driving force for research in 3-manifold topology. This has inspired a surge of activity investigating hyperbolic 3-manifolds (and Kleinian groups), as these manifolds form the largest and least well-understood class of compact 3-manifolds. Familiar and new tools from diverse areas of mathematics have been utilized in these investigations, from topology, geometry, analysis, group theory, and from the point of view of this book, algebra and number theory. This book is aimed at readers already familiar with the basics of hyperbolic 3-manifolds or Kleinian groups, and it is intended to introduce them to the interesting connections with number theory and the tools that will be required to pursue them. While there are a number of texts which cover the topological, geometric and analytical aspects of hyperbolic 3-manifolds, this book is unique in that it deals exclusively with the arithmetic aspects, which are not covered in other texts. Colin Maclachlan is a Reader in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland where he has served since 1968. He is a former President of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society. Alan Reid is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin. He is a former Royal Society University Research Fellow, Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and winner of the Sir Edmund Whittaker Prize from The Edinburgh Mathematical Society. Both authors have published extensively in the general area of discrete groups, hyperbolic manifolds and low-dimensional topology.

Book Description
A Kleinian group is a discrete subgroup of the isometry group of hyperbolic 3-space, which is also regarded as a subgroup of Mobius transformations in the complex plane. The present book is a comprehensive guide to theories of Kleinian groups from the viewpoints of hyperbolic geometry and complex analysis. After 1960, Ahlfors and Bers were the leading researchers of Kleinian groups and helped it to become an active area of complex analysis as a branch of Teichmuller theory. Later, Thurston brought a revolution to this area with his profound investigation of hyperbolic manifolds, and at the same time complex dynamical approach was strongly developed by Sullivan. This book provides fundamental results and important theorems which are needed for access to the frontiers of the theory from a modern viewpoint.
Customer Reviews:
Good Introduction to the zoo of Hyperbolic Geometry.......1998-08-19
This book is intended to introduce readers to Hyperbolic Geometry in 3 dimensions. The book covers from a review of hyperbolic surfaces to the classification program of 3-manifold initiated by Thurston.
Book Description
Although Riemann surfaces are a time-honoured field, this book is novel in its broad perspective that systematically explores the connection with other fields of mathematics. It can serve as an introduction to contemporary mathematics as a whole as it develops background material from algebraic topology, differential geometry, the calculus of variations, elliptic PDE, and algebraic geometry. It is unique among textbooks on Riemann surfaces in including an introduction to Teichmüller theory. The analytic approach is likewise new as it is based on the theory of harmonic maps. For this 2nd edition the author has further improved aspects of presentation of various parts of the text.

Holidays on Ice is a collection of three previously published stories matched with three newer ones, all, of course, on a Christmas theme. David Sedaris's darkly playful humor is another common thread through the book, worming its way through "Seasons Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" a chipper suburban Christmas letter that spirals dizzily out of control, and "Front Row Center with Thaddeus Bristol," a vicious theatrical review of children's Christmas pageants. As always, Sedaris's best work is his sharply observed nonfiction, notably in "Dinah, the Christmas Whore," the tale of a memorable Christmas during which the young Sedaris learns to see his family in a new light. Worth the price of the book alone is the hilarious "SantaLand Diaries," Sedaris's chronicle of his time working as an elf at Macy's, covering everything from the preliminary group lectures ("You are not a dancer. If you were a real dancer you wouldn't be here. You're an elf and you're going to wear panties like an elf.") to the perils of inter-elf flirtation. Along the way, he paints a funny and sad portrait of the way the countless parents who pass through SantaLand are too busy creating an Experience to really pay attention to their children. In a sly way, it carries a holiday message all its own. Read it aloud to the adults after the kids have gone to bed. --Ali Davis

Customer Reviews:
Too dark for my taste.......2007-10-09
Huge disappointment. I have read three David Sedaris books previously and had found them laugh-out-loud funny. "Holidays on Ice" nearly ended up in the fireplace when I hit a particularly dark chapter. His humor has always been on the sarcastic side, which generally appeals to me, but I didn't find this book amusing. If I want to be horrified, I'll read Dean Koontz.
Holidays on Ice: A Satire on the Holiday Season.......2007-09-21
"This afternoon I sat in the eighth-floor SantaLand office and was told, ` Congratulations, Mr. Sedaris. You are an elf.'" This is one of the many hilarious quotes from David Sedaris' novel Holidays on Ice which contains six enlightening Christmas stories. Also known for his other hilarious books Me Talk Pretty One Day and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, middle aged humorist Sedaris writes about his own experiences and thoughts on the Christmas season.
In the first essay entitled "SantaLand Diaries," Sedaris tells his about his crazy encounters working as an elf in the department store Macy's after getting rejected from UPS. He describes the shoppers and fellow employees with sarcastic humor. He tells about his various jobs that he works, and explains about the Magic Window position. He has to stand there and exclaim, "Step on the Magic Star and look through the window, and you can see Santa!" One day he gets bored of saying the same fifteen words over and over again, so he decides to mix things up a bit. "Step on the Magic Star and you can see Cher and Mike Tyson!" People start to get upset when they sacrifice their spot in line to see Santa to go into the Magic Star line. Needless to say, David Sedaris is never positioned in the Magic Star line again.
The next essay, "Season's Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" is a fictional story about the ridiculousness of long family descriptions on Christmas cards. "He's made the honor roll every semester and there seems to be no stopping him!!! A year and a half left to go and already the job offers are pouring in! We love you, Kevin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" exclaims the narrator Mrs. Dunbar. Mrs. Dunbar's ideal world, however, soon comes crashing down when a stranger named Khe Sahn suddenly comes to live with them. As it turns out, Mrs. Dunbar's "perfect" husband had a daughter in Vietnam named Khe Sahn. As the story unfolds, Khe Sahn turns their world upside down.
"Dinah, the Christmas Whore" is another essay describing the bizarre world of David Sedaris. He tells how his sister Lisa brought her friend Dinah home one day four days before Christmas. He describes the humorous way in which his family reacts to her, and the questions they ask her about her interesting life in prison and about her experiences as a prostitute.
Another essay, "Christmas Means Giving," tells the fictional story about one family's competition with their neighbors, the Cottinghams. Every year, the neighbors try to out-do the other's Christmas deeds, and as you will see it gets pretty crazy as the families try to be the best and most "giving" in the neighborhood.
Holidays on Ice is a hilarious book of essays that will keep you laughing non-stop. I recommend this novel for anyone who wants a good laugh, young or old. I personally give this book two very enthusiastic thumbs up for its dry humor. Each sarcastic and humorous essay will make you want to read the next. By the way, this collection of essays would make a great Christmas gift!
More odd and disconcerting than his usual works.........2007-07-03
I'm a huge fan of David Sedaris' books, but other than the "Santaland Diaries" and "Dinah" stories, I couldn't get into it. The other stories weren't funny, the pace was plodding despite the fact that these were short stories, and I was actually somewhat uncomfortable reading them.
I'd recommend most of his other books, just not this one.
Revisitations of familiar journeys.......2007-05-07
I enjoyed the opportunity to read David Sedaris' stories, some of which I had read elsewhere. It is a good format to launch someone on 'the good ship Sedaris' but for those who have been initiated, it was all too brief in the newness arena. It rattles along very comfortably, like an old Chevrolet, but we do like the smell of a new car every so often, don't we?
Holidays on Ice.......2007-03-24
Another collections of hilarious short stories by David Sedaris. All of them were hysterical. I loaned this book to many a friend and have yet to find an intelligent person who does not get this author! He is so well crafted at the art of writing, I laughed so hard I cried reading it!

Book Description
Angelina is busy preparing for the Ice Dance with her friends Alice, Flora, and Felicity. Cousin Henry tries to help too, but nothing goes right. And the rehearsals are disrupted when two big boys from school tease the ballerinas. More than a few snowballs fly before Angelina finds a way to ensure the success of the show.
Customer Reviews:
Charming.......2002-01-12
In this next book in the Angelina Ballerina series, Angelina prepares for the New Year's Eve Ice Dance. It's a lovely pageant, but she repeatedly finds her practice interrupted by Spike and Sammy, two boys from the school. When she complains to her mother, Mrs. Mouseling explains that the two boys just want her attention. And so, Angelina forms a plan to include the two boys...
Once again, I must say that Katherine Holabird sure knows how to write a wonderful story. I liked the lesson of the book, and my daughter and I both loved Helen Craig's illustrations. We highly recommend this book to you.
Angelina Ice Skates.......2000-03-24
I fell in love with Angelina when I was young and the first book came out. I recently read Angelina Ice Skates and loved it as I did all the others. The Angelina books all teach a lesson, yet put the characters in situations that real children could end up in. In Angelina Ice Skates, Angelina and her friends are having trouble with some of the boys at the rink. Her mother gives her some advice and all works out in the end. The perfect length for a bedtime story, I would recommend this book for all children's libraries, especially little girls who want to be ballerinas.
Book Description
Searching for high adventure, the author sets sail from Sydney Australia and takes himself to Antarctica. Alone. Not touching land for 14 weeks, facing mountainous seas, constant gales, snow, and freezing temperatures.

Holiday humor.......2007-10-04
I'm a huge fun of Sedaris and his humor. Having said this, I am so thrilled to have Christmas stories Sedaris style. Some of these stories are more funny than others. Definitely, this book is worth reading or listening to (Book on cd is read by David Sedaris) to get you in the holiday season spirit if your idea of Christmas are elves and Santa Clause and crazy family reunions.
So very amusing!.......2005-12-28

The Chocolate-Covered-Cookie Tantrum
ASIN: 0618159606 |
Book Description
Every year a glittering palace made from blocks of ice rises several stories above the wintry landscape of Saranac Lake, New York. The workers who build the palace, which is the centerpiece of the annual winter carnival, come from the village and from a nearby prison, Camp Gabriels. Inspired by this real-life event and told in the voice of a young girl who lives nearby, the account of the preparation and creation of the palace and of the festive days that follow gains special poignancy from the fact that the narrator's uncle is among the prisoners on the construction crew. Ted Rand's vibrant watercolors join Deborah Blumenthal's sensitively written text in a unique tribute to a century-old tradition and the community spirit that warms winter's iciest days. Author's note.

My Daughter Loves This Book.......2004-02-03
My daughter got this book as a birthday present from a family friend, and it has quickly become a favorite of hers, and mine. The story is touching and well-told, and the author tells it in a way that is appropriate for young children but also interesting for adults. The illustrations are also beautiful and really draws you into the story.
Fantastic!!.......2004-01-14
What a fantastic story! I bought this book at the recommendation of a friend, and loved it from the first page. The way the author takes a story that is interesting from an adult's perspective and makes it enjoyable for young children as well is great - it's hard to find books for my children that my husband and I find fascinating too. The story is great - it's about the men in prison up in Lake Saranac, New York, who build a palace made out of huge ice blocks each winter.
There are so many interesting and touching elements to this story, which are all accentuated by the beautiful illustrations. It makes me want to visit the real ice palace!
Amazing!!.......2003-10-31
I try to read to my children as much as possible. The Ice Palace was one of the best books I have read in a long time. My children and I were both equally captivated. The story is sweet and compasionate and I would highly recommend it.
