    Book Description

Objects that differ from their mirror images, such as the left and right hands, play an important role in physics at all lengths scales, from elementary particles to macroscopic systems. The handedness, or chirality, of molecules in liquid crystals has a remarkable influence on the macroscopic physical properties of these systems, including the appearance of new phases. Indeed, the majority of optical applications of liquid crystals is due to chiral structures, namely the thermochromic effect of cholesteric liquid crystals, the optical activity in twisted nematic liquid crystal displays, and the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric switching of smectic liquid crystals. This book describes the main aspects of chirality in liquid crystals, and points out some of the open questions of current research. The chapters, each by an expert in the field, review the highlights of the important topics and representative questions in the field of chiral liquid crystals.

From the author: The synthesis and investigation are reported for the phase behavior of a set of three liquid-crystalline side chain polyesters (SCLCPs), consisting of aromatic diacids and diols bearing cyano biphenyl moieties in the side chain. The materials contain a chiral center in the main chain and show a cholesteric phase indicative of a helical order with a preferred twist. In addition, they exhibit [T.sub.g]'s below room temperature and smectic bilayer phases. Depending on the substitution pattern of the aromatic core, [S.sub.[C.sup.*]], or [S.sub.[A.sup.*]] phases are observed. These polymers were synthesized in a four-step synthesis, starting from available materials. The dielectric relaxation behavior and the pyroelectric responses of the three SCLCPs tend to conform to their respective structure.

            Book Description

Carlos de SigÜenza y Góngora, one of seventeenth-century Mexico's best-known intellectuals, was a writer of fascinating and complex narratives that exemplarize the heterogeneous nature of colonial Spanish American prose. This book is the first critical study to place both the writer and his narrative within the phenomenon of the Barroco de Indias, or the Spanish-American baroque. Approaching SigÜenza as a criollo historian preoccupied with the placement of the New World within a universal context, Professor Ross develops a theoretical framework within which his texts can be read and understood today. Professor Ross incorporates into her examination new critical trends, such as the use of narrative theory, the new historiography, and feminist criticism.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Both poor and excellent essays re the region's "culture".......1999-10-12

While the latest edition of Leslie Bethell's Oxford "History Of Latin America" series suffers by comparison with others of the series it does provide insight and information on an aspect of Latin America which is often slighted by economic or political analyses of the region. The anthology covers (in order) literature, poetry, Native American art, plastic art, architecture and film. The calibre of the essays varies greatly. Martin's insights into the region's literary trends remind me of Jean Franco's excellent work whereas other sections, such as those on architecture and the plastic, come across as a mere listing of works and their creators. One reason for this is that the various authors were faced with the dilemma of either accurately portraying the region's culture as disparate or tying the various artists together into overall patterns. The authors who sacrificed accuracy were able to analyze in an engaging manner, while those who, correctly, recognized that patterns are few in the region suffered from chaotic and incoherent essays.

She discovers literary influences from Latin American and Caribbean American literatures which made the period a rich era of literary border-crossing and transcontinental cultural exchange.

                  Book Description

In this book Warren Motley offers an original interpretation of James Fenimore Cooper’s career. Whereas most studies of Cooper have centered on the figure of the Leatherstocking - that solitary model of the self-sufficient American hero untrammeled by civilization - this book examines Cooper’s interest in the pioneer patriarchs who built new societies in the wilderness. Throughout his career Cooper explored an essential American problem: how to achieve the right balance between freedom and authority. He did this by retelling the story of the frontier settlement and thereby assessing its successes and failures. Like other writers in the decades before the Civil War, Cooper struggled with the legacy of the Revolutionary fathers - a legacy made more personal in Cooper’s case by his father’s role as a frontier land developer, judge, and Federalist politician. This book breaks new ground by relating Cooper’s artistic development, and his ideas about authority in society, to his efforts to become independent of his father. Motley traces Cooper’s preoccupation with authority from his youthful letters, through the troubled decade that preceded his decision to be a writer, and on to his studies of American history at its different stages in such books as The Wept of Wisb-Ton-Wish, Satanstoe, The Pioneers, The Prairie, and The Crater. By making his fiction into a series of imaginative negotiations with authority, Cooper offered a radical re-presentation of American history and frontier settlement. This view acknowledged the achievement of the nation’s founders while at the same time expressing Cooper’s independent vision and establishing him in the role of a founder as the nation’s first major novelist. In Cooper’s fiction, the future of American society ultimately rests not with the Leatherstocking and his fictional progeny but with the American Abraham.

                    Book Description

Joan Richardson provides a fascinating and compelling account of the emergence of the quintessential American philosophy: pragmatism. She demonstrates pragmatism's engagement with various branches of the natural sciences and traces the development of Jamesian pragmatism from the late nineteenth century through modernism, following its pointings into the present. Richardson combines strands from America's religious experience with scientific information to offer interpretations that break new ground in literary and cultural history. This book exemplifies the value of interdisciplinary approaches to producing literary criticism. In a series of highly original readings of Edwards, Emerson, William and Henry James, Stevens, and Stein, A Natural History of Pragmatism tracks the interplay of religious motive, scientific speculation, and literature in shaping an American aesthetic. Wide-ranging and bold, this groundbreaking book will be essential reading for all students and scholars of American literature.

                        Book Description

In an attempt to lend a more nuanced ear to the ongoing dialogue between African and Jewish Americans, Emily Budick examines the works of a range of writers, critics, and academics from the 1950s through the 1980s. This study records conversations both explicit, such as essays and letters, and indirect, such as the fiction of Bernard Malamud, Philip Roth, Alice Walker, Cynthia Ozick, Toni Morrison, and James Baldwin. The purpose is to understand how this dialogue has engendered misperceptions and misunderstandings, and how blacks and Jews in America have both sought and resisted assimilation.

                        Book Description

When Ernest Hemingway committed suicide in 1961 he left four unfinished works--A Moveable Feast, Islands in the Stream, The Garden of Eden, and an untitled work on his travels in Africa. The edited versions that have come down to readers and scholars of Hemingway appear as distinct, disjointed texts that fit oddly into his oeuvre. Through extensive literary detective work Burwell has uncovered substantial evidence that Hemingway in fact designed the three published works as a trilogy, what she terms "his own Portrait of the Artist."

                        5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking Study.......2005-09-28

This is the only in-depth scholarly work extant on the mass of unfinished books Hemingway left behind in 1961. Besides that, it is fluidly written, thoroughly documented, thoughtfully analyzed, and excellent in all respects.

It matters not whether or not the thesis -- that the posthumous works constitute a loose unified work -- holds up. To state it and explore it, as the author does, is to cast a lot of light on the very complex issue of Hemingway's last works and their difficult manuscripts. No one had even gone as far as to lay the groundwork for such a question before Burwell. Indeed it was doubtless necessary to proceed on some sort of hypothesis to go through these widely divergent manuscripts chronologically, as the author does, and to then present a coherent text of her own regarding her studies.

The author also has a great openness and sympathy for Hemingway and his tortured, insistent aestheticism. It shines through the entire work and raises it to a very rare level in modern literary criticism.
