    Heiress Missing: The Untold Story.

Clemmie Colshannon, a London art appraiser framed (pun intended) by her boyfriend and subsequently fired, retreats to the bosom of her eccentric family in Cornwall to recover. But no sooner has she unpacked her bags than her sister, Holly, an energetic reporter who lives to scoop, enlists Clemmie’s derring-do on a juicy story.

It seems that Emma McKellan, who writes the society pages for the Bristol Gazette, has disappeared days before her lavish wedding. As Holly and Clemmie search for clues on the missing bride (relishing the prospect of delicious scandal), they inadvertently steer themselves directly toward trouble.

In times of crisis, the Colshannon clan is always in the thick of things–particularly Clemmie’s drama-queen mother, who has an affinity for saving wild animals, and her brother, who goes to outrageous extremes to impress a certain girl and succeeds only in terrifying her. Whether she likes it or not, Clemmie always seems to find herself in the throes of adventure. And sure enough, the whole family is soon fleeing to the south of France . . . with an ex-convict in hot pursuit.

    Chapter One

"Bonjour Madame!" I greet the lady behind the desk and put on my most charming smile. It always does to treat these ladies well. Some of them have the power of a small country.

She looks up from her work, peers at me over the top of her half-moon glasses and sniffs slightly as though she can smell my Englishness. My smile falters a little. I mean, I have been in a police station in England before. Once. So although I'm not exactly a hardened criminal, I do have some idea of the form. But do they do things differently in France?

"Mon frere est ici . . ." I start haltingly in my GCSE French. The problem with GCSE French is that you have to fight a constant urge to ask people their name, how old they are and where they live before you can get down to the brass tacks of any problem. "Il est . . . er . . . em . . ." I'm trying desperately to find the word I need. I trawl through my limited vocabulary. It's no good, there's nothing that vaguely matches it. So I try the English phrase.

    "UNDER ARREST."

It doesn't seem to fool her; she looks at me blankly. I try it again, this time with a French accent.

    "ARRESTE."

"Il est en etat d'arrestation?" she queries.

This sounds vaguely right so I nod.

    "Qui s'appelle?"

    "Il s'appelle Barney Colshannon."

    "Attendez lˆ bas."

She gestures to some chairs by the wall, so Sam and I duly wander over to them and sit down.
Of course, I blame my mother for all this. She had just received Morgan the Pekinese's pet passport and suggested we all nip over to France for the weekend to see if it was working. He is a rather old and smelly dog with no teeth left in the front of his mouth and will pee on anything if you leave it in the middle of the room. I'm not quite sure what he is thinking when he tries to bite other dogs, he must be under the impression he can suck them to death. Anyway, despite being adored by my mother, Morgan and I have never quite seen eye to eye, so why we couldn't have just popped him on a cross channel ferry and waited to see if he came back I simply do not know. However, the pull of some French bread and cheap booze was simply too much for us and we all readily acquiesced.
My mother always makes France sound absolutely delightful as she is a bit of a Francophile at heart, but her version is solely based on Gerard Depardieu and some adverts she did for the French tourist board back in the eighties which involved her getting pissed on Bordeaux. According to her, France is just one big bit of cheese with plenty of wine and a few ooh-la-las thrown in. Not a police station in sight. This is a clearly inaccurate opinion because here I am in a French police station with no cheese, no wine and certainly no ooh-la-las.

We had all split up this morning to go our separate ways. I wanted to look at the shops, Barney went down on the beach and as Sam has the only real job out of all of us, he had to make some work phone calls. Sam is Barney's best friend. He has been since we moved to Cornwall about fifteen years ago and hence he's always been a presence in my life. I popped back to the hotel after my little shopping sortie (didn't buy anything as I am stony broke but that is another story) and the receptionist there gave me the message about Barney. I immediately went to get Sam because he is a lawyer and I was under the misapprehension that he might be of some use, and then we headed for the police station in double quick time. So at this precise moment my parents are sitting in a little cafe somewhere in Le Touquet, expecting us to turn up any second but nonetheless having a raucous time and probably some cheese too, blissfully oblivious to the fact that their son has been arrested. Whereas I, by virtue of my French GCSE, sit here (which just goes to show that too much education can be a bad

5 out of 5 stars Pet seagulls, detective work, and pleanty of Fun.......2006-09-23

I have to say that Norman the recovering seagull was by far my favorite character in this book! What a fun, unique, and laugh out loud book! Society Girls picks up with the Colshannon family but this time with the focus on Clemmie, the slighty neurotic youger sister. Clemmie has recently returned to Cornwall after a trip around the world. Without a job or boyfriend, Clemmie finds herself working in a cafe and spending time at home avoiding Norman the seagull. Clemmie's sister, Holly, comes down for a visit and recounts to Clemmie the mysterious story of Emma from the paper that Holly works for going missing. The girls go off in search of clues, and begin their detective work to track down the missing Emma. The story takes off from there and the girls find themselves travelling to France in this funny, laugh-out-loud story.

    Definately a book worth reading!

5 out of 5 stars Society Sisters Get in Mischief! .......2006-08-21

This book was a fun and enjoyable read! Clemmie was a character to which one can relate. She and Holly were a good mischievious team! I have added her books Playing James and Party Girl to my Wish List and I am looking forward to reading them!

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2006-05-16

I stopped reading halfway through, it was boring and anti-climatic. Mason's first book, 'Playing James', was excellent--witty, intersting, and fun. Save your money on this book.

5 out of 5 stars European Vacation Spot Escapades.........2006-03-17

Again, another book by Sarah Mason with her brand of humour, a plot full of intrigue, unexpected pairing of new romances, fast paced action and rollicking with pandemonium. She brings in her earlier characters, Holly & James & Holly's parents from her first novel "Playing James" & blends them skillfully with a new cast.

Sisters-in-sleuth, Clemmie and Holly Colshannon join forces, though reluctantly for Clemmie for lack of nothing to do, to find a missing colleague of Holly who is a reporter at the Bristol Gazette. Emma is the missing colleauge who is also a rich socialite & Holly feels that finding her would be very news worthy for her own column.

Holly, forever effusive and serial breaker of rules & regulations, is the leader while her elder sister, Clemmie is the follower. James is not far behind in catching up to salvage the damage caused by both. Mind you, this book's central charcter is Clemmie not Holly but somehow Holly's misdeeds overshadow Clemmie's timid character. There were many times when I forgot that Clemmie was the protagonist as both old & new characters introduced tend to overshadow Clemmie with their more interesting personalities.

The plot escalates to something of a hit and run rescue operation gone wrong by Holly & Clemmie with a formerly convicted prisoner trailing them at every place the Colshannon clan appears to be both in Cornwall & in southern France where they eventually fled to lose track of him.

The setting of the plot in vacation spots of Europe lend an air of escapism and arm chair travel: Cornwall in southern England and Cote d'Azur in southern France which are accurately described if you have been there.

A good read as always for a book by Sarah Mason.

2 out of 5 stars Not very good........2005-10-19

I got about 1/2 way through the book then decided to stop reading it. The first haf was good then I didn't see why it needed to go on. Just bored me. It didn't grab my attention like some chick lit mysteries have. I got it for $1 at a used book store, so I didn't waste much.

Miasha did pretty good with this book! The characters were a trip and there were alot of twists in it! I would recommend this book for readers but make sure you have an open mind!

2 out of 5 stars The Only Secret is why People would like this!.......2007-06-21

I don't understand this novel. There is NO way that two unemployed homosexual men living as women and preying on "straight" men, will be lavished with 20,000 dollar shopping sprees...WOMEN rarely ever get that luxury. This whole book was pretty much a bore. I got tired of hearing about the matching guccis and the additional chanel accessories... Too much label dropping and too little plot worth reading. It is an ok book to borrow from a pal, but please pass if your spending cash. The two main characters are not very realistic, and the fact that they maintain long well-kept relationships and their signifigant other NEVER realizes that their sex is strictly backdoor... I dunno. The book just seemed pretty pointless. But if your into cheesey, predictable drama with a unique twist, maybe, just maybe.... this novel is for you.

    Final Word: Borrow!

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-05-29

This book had secrets from the beginning to the end. Emotions were thrown back and forth in this book. Miasha did an amazing job!

I truly enjoyed this book. It had many twists in the plot which kept the pages turning. I read it in one day.

      ASIN: 0313302545

      Book Description

Since its publication in 1985, Annie John has become one of the most widely taught novels in American high schools. Part of its appeal lies in its unique setting, the island of Antigua. This interdisciplinary collection of 30 primary documents and commentary will enrich the reader's understanding of the historical, social, and cultural contexts of the novel. Among the topics examined are slavery in the Caribbean, the various religions in the Caribbean islands, the controversy over Christopher Columbus, family life in Antigua, and emigrations from the West Indies to the United States. Sources include newspaper and magazine articles, editorials, first-person narratives and memoirs of life in the Caribbean, letters, and position papers. Most of the documents are not readily available in any other printed form. A literary analysis of Annie John examines the novel in light of its historical, social, and cultural contexts and as a coming-of-age novel. Each chapter concludes with study questions and topics for research papers and class discussion based on the documents in the chapter, and lists of further reading for examining the themes and issues raised by the novel. This casebook is valuable to students and teachers to help them understand the setting of the novel, its themes, and its young heroine.

      Book Description

In a fabulous blend of the bestselling traditions of Prep and The Devil Wears Prada, Secret Society Girl takes us into the heart of the Ivy League’s ultraexclusive secret societies when a young woman is invited to join as one of their first female members.

Elite Eli University junior Amy Haskel never expected to be tapped into Rose & Grave, the country’s most powerful—and notorious—secret society. She isn’t rich, politically connected, or…well, male.

So when Amy receives the distinctive black-lined invitation with the Rose & Grave seal, she’s blown away. Could they really mean her?

Whisked off into an initiation rite that’s a blend of Harry Potter and Alfred Hitchcock, Amy awakens the next day to a new reality and a whole new set of “friends”—from the gorgeous son of a conservative governor to an Afrocentric lesbian activist whose society name is Thorndike. And that’s when Amy starts to discover the truth about getting what you wish for. Because Rose & Grave is quickly taking her away from her familiar world of classes and keggers, fueling a feud, and undermining a very promising friendship with benefits. And that’s before Amy finds out that her first duty as a member of Rose & Grave is to take on a conspiracy of money and power that could, quite possibly, ruin her whole life.

A smart, sexy introduction to the life and times of a young woman in way over her head, Secret Society Girl is a charming and witty debut from a writer who knows her turf—and isn’t afraid to tell all....

I read this book in one sitting! Excellent writing; great commentary on college life! If you were ever in a sorority/fraternity/secret society, you will relate. This is a great book!

5 out of 5 stars Frothy, yet filling.......2007-06-07

For me as for most Americans the Ivy League is some remote planet about which I know little and care less. But Ms. Peterfreund can write, she can plot, she can develop interesting characters. The reader moves effortlessly into and through her quaint world. Maybe not a candidate for the "Great American Novel" but there's a lot to be said for a darn good read.

      4 out of 5 stars A Fun Read.......2007-05-29

I enjoyed the quirky main character, Amy. She constantly says and does the wrong thing and somehow wanders through. She doesn't come from money, but has settled herself in nicely in her ivy league college and feels, as editor of a literary magazine, she is set to be selected for the literary secret society. When she is instead tapped for the highly selective, all men's society, she thinks it is a bad joke. Once she settles into to being included in the group, everything begins to fall apart. This is a fun read with lots of twists and turns. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

      5 out of 5 stars I Loved This Book!.......2007-05-22

SECRET SOCIETY GIRL is witty, clever, and a real joy to read. The characters crackle to life, the storyline is very engaging, and the author kept me glued to the page with her well-written and often quite amusing prose. I can't wait to read its sequel, UNDER THE ROSE, and I'm glad I don't have to wait very long for its release!

If your looking for a deep-hearted and motivational book than look elsewhere. But if you want a quick, enjoyable, and fun book than look no further. This is a great book to bring to the pool and read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!! .......2007-06-14

I read this book in one sitting! Excellent writing; great commentary on college life! If you were ever in a sorority/fraternity/secret society, you will relate. This is a great book!
