    Book Description

Her husband left her for another man.
    Her boyfriend may be cheating.
    Her mother’s got a secret.
Is everyone having great sex but Rachel?

Lately, stand-up comic Rachel Katz’s life has begun to resemble a not-so-funny comedy routine — the kind where nobody laughs and everybody inches toward the door.

It began when her husband cheated ... with another man. Now she’s raising a ten-year-old son who’s fixated on Barbra Streisand and wondering if her dentist boyfriend — who won’t stop flossing long enough to make love to her — is having an affair.

Enter Matt Clapton, a wickedly sexy washing machine repairman who likes Rachel’s jokes and makes her feel like a woman for the first time in ages — maybe in her entire life.

With her mother busy planning a wedding Rachel isn’t sure she wants, her son dead set on inviting Barbra to the reception, and the groom-to-be in South Africa, working on someone else’s oral hygiene, the question is: What’s she going to do about it? Especially when fame and fortune beckon in a comedy contest that could put her on the map ... and change her life forever.

Spin Cycle tells a wickedly funny, shamelessly erotic story of lovers and liars, exes and children, parents and other strangers. This hip and hilarious new novel by the acclaimed author of Neurotica introduces a heroine who never loses her sense of humor and who discovers, somewhere between the rinse and spin cycles, that love — and laughter — can truly conquer all.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time.......2006-01-15

I would have given this no star. I had never read such a boring book. I got hooked on chick lit because of Sophie Kinsella's books esp. the Shopaholic series and based on the reviews here, I thought I'd give Margolis a try. Zzzzzz....

    5 out of 5 stars Rachel & "Rinse" Charming.......2004-09-28

What a great book!!!! Cute and entertaining wouldn't even begin to describe it. I loved every minute spent on every page, and found myself dying to get back to reading the novel while I was out or doing other things. Talk about being hooked!!

This is the first time that I have read a book by Sue Margolis, and I think I started with the right one!
SPIN CYCLE had me smacking my knees with laughter. It was witty, and cleverly written... and not to mention sexy!!!!!!!!!! ('Shamelessly erotic' is right!). That washing machine man REALLY knew how to handle his load (*wink*wink*).

Rachel Katz is a struggling comedienne who has accepted that her ex-husband left her --- for another man, convinced that her fiancé is cheating on her, worried about her son's obsession with Barbra Streisand, and trying to figure out her mother's sexy secret all at the same time. She meets and falls hard for Matt Clapton, the sexy washing machine repairman who understands her and supports her and sweeps her off her feet. All of these situations make for a hugely hilarious and romantic comedy.

This is definitely chick-lit at it's best!!! Sophie Kinsella had better make some room over at the top of my "fave chick-lit authors" pedestal!!

    5 out of 5 stars Spin Cycle.......2003-12-08

I thought this book was so much fun to read. Its light hearted and fun. Sue Margolis is a hillairious author. Who would ever think of a romance/comedy about a washin machine repair man and a cleaning lady? I thought it was a great book, and any one who wants to read a light hearted romance is in for a treat with spin cycle.

    4 out of 5 stars Spin Cycle.......2003-10-17

Spin Cycle, by Sue Margolis, is one of the funniest books that I have read. It had romance, comedy, and real life obstacles of Rachel Katz, the main character. She is a comedian which everyone but herself thinks is a bad profession for her. She has a gay ex husband, an uptight fiance, and a son who is in love with Barbara Streisand. And her mother busy planning a wedding that Rachel isn't sure she wants. But then she meets the washing machine repairman who she believes is too good to be true. He sweeps her off her feet, and makes her feel like a real woman which she hasn't felt in a long time. She's a comedian so a lot of her performances relate to her everyday life and her sex life which is practically non existent. To top it all off, her mother has a secret! Does she fall in love with the repairman? It's quite predictable. Does Rachel prove to everyone that she can be successful in the comedy business? Of course things go her way, she enters a comedy contest which can put her on the map, and change her life forever. A typical happily ever after ending with everything working out.
I enjoyed this book, it kept me reading and reading, I couldn't put it down! The way she describes her characters and all their actions makes it interesting and wants you to read more and more.

1 out of 5 stars crudeness is not a substitute for true humor.......2003-07-28

As I plowed through this book I kept thinking over and over again--enough already with references to bodily fluids and solids and depilation of intimate body areas. I found these references crude and offensive and they were completely unnecessary. Don't waste your time reading this book.

With a slew of simultaneous scandals to his credit and numerous ongoing investigations pending, President Clinton has been bombarded by the media in a fashion not seen since the last days of the Nixon administration. Despite this unwanted attention, Clinton has managed to maintain lofty approval ratings and successfully deflect even the most ardent attacks. How does he do it? This question is answered in full in Spin Cycle: Inside the Clinton Propaganda Machine, an engrossing, backroom look at how news is created and packaged in the White House and the methods used to distribute it to the public. In painting a detailed picture of the hand-to-hand combat known as a press conference, Kurtz shows how the use of controlled leaks, meticulously worded briefs, and the outright avoidance of certain questions allows the White House to control the scope and content of the stories that make it to the front page and the nightly network news. As Kurtz makes clear, the president and First Lady are convinced that the media are out to get them, while the journalists covering the White House are constantly frustrated at the stonewalling and the lack of cooperation they encounter while trying to do their jobs. In the middle is White House press secretary Mike McCurry, a master at defusing volatile situations and walking the fine line with the press. Though less paranoid and cynical of the media than Clinton, he often finds himself on both ends of personal attacks and vendettas that veer far outside the arena of objective reporting. The anecdotes and carefully buried information Kurtz has uncovered give Spin Cycle a brisk pace, along with ample invaluable information that cuts to the core of this age of media overkill. The author of Hot Air and Media Circus and a longtime media reporter for the Washington Post, Kurtz is uniquely qualified to report on the status of news dissemination in the United States.

    Book Description

Spin Cycle is the first behind-the-scenes account of the White House political operation as it packages and shapes the news by manipulating, misleading, and in some cases, intimidating the press. It is also the tale of how some of the nation's top journalists buy into these efforts and, often, put their own spin on the news.

Compelling, infuriating, often devastatingly funny, this is the story you should read before you pick up the newspaper tomorrow morning.

5 out of 5 stars Not the Fluff Cycle.......2003-01-16

Being a fan of President Clinton I always read a book on his administration with a bit of a bias view. At times this book upset me and other times I was shouting "right on", given these duel responses I have come to the conclusion that, no matter that I did not agree with a number of items, the book is an overall fair look at the Clinton scandal fest. I thought the author did a great job in weaving together the pertinent facts about each of the scandals / issues with the response from the White House. I was very interested in the inside info on how the White House tried to either spin or deflect each of the stories. The author had a great deal of direct quotes of conversations, which really made the book come alive. The information about the White House briefing is worth the price of the book alone. You can actually see this type of activity at work today with the current briefings that are televised.

I also was interested in the additional comments on the way that the Clinton's themselves viewed the media and their knee jerk reaction to clam up at every question. You almost got the feeling that if the Clinton's would have always listened to the media people on their staffs that some of the overall negative and nasty press they received may have been decreased to some degree. The last bit of the book that surprised me was the, at times, rude, disrespectful and almost violent way the media and the White House staff dealt with each other. You just got to wonder what the White House staff was thinking to beat up on the people with the loudest voice in the country. My only complaint was that the book ended too soon, missing the Super Bowl of the spin, the Starr Report and the impeachment. It would have been nice for the author to have held out a year or so for the full story in the paperback. Overall I found this book well written, very interesting and quite enjoyable. It is required reading for anyone that is interested in the Clinton years or the media.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but some definite narrative problems.......2002-01-19

As a political "junkie" and avid reader of political memoirs, pundit rantings, etc., I looked forward to reading Kurtz's Spin Cycle. It was worth the read, but it was ultimately disappointing.

I admired two main aspects of the book. First, this seems to be a legitimate, credible view from the inside. The use of direct quotations and the attention to detail allow the reader to be more of an insider.

Secondly, Kurtz does a nice job with the characterizations of the main players. Instead of just telling the reader what so-and-so said (a common occurrence in many political books) Kurtz provides potential motivation and character traits. Again, this allows for a detailed look "behind the scenes."

However, there were many aspects that disappointed. First, the book's organization was very disjointed. It was difficult to follow the progression of the story; often, I couldn't tell if Kurtz was proceeding in chronological order.

Secondly, the book's ending seems "tacked on." Obviously, Kurtz couldn't have foreseen the Lewinski saga as he was planning the book, but after-the-fact, I wish Kurtz would have been able to more seamlessly include this chapter. As a result, the book seems to end, but then we have another chapter on Lewinski.

Furthermore, the book ends before Clinton's spin story was over. We don't get to learn about the White House response to the Starr Report. We don't get to follow the PR during the 2001 election. I found myself wishing that Kurtz had waited to write this book until after Clinton left office.

All in all, it's an interesting book and a worthy read. Some structural problems, though, proved problematic.

4 out of 5 stars and this was just the dress rehearsal (so to speak).......2001-11-13

The presidential flacks had done their job. For 1997, at least, their spin had carried the day.
    -Howard Kurtz, Spin Cycle

In a story that is utterly devoid of edifying moments and chock full of quite depressing ones, these
final lines of the book are the most shocking. For it is only as you read them that the full realization
hits home that Howard Kurtz's justifiably jaded and cynical look at the way the Clinton administration
manipulated the press and the public in order to cover up or blunt scandal was written before the
Lewinsky scandal broke. Commingled with the shock though is the sudden comprehension that the
Clinton Administration was uniquely well prepared to deal with such a scandal, having spent the prior
seven years honing their obfuscatory skills on a whole series of equally disturbing and potentially
    damaging scandals.

In fact, as Kurtz notes in a hastily tacked on Epilogue, one that subsequent events were to wholly
outpace, in the deposition that Bill Clinton gave in the Jones case, on the weekend that Matt Drudge
broke the Monica story, he revealed that he had in fact had sex with Gennifer Flowers. In other
words, on the very first occasion that most Americans saw Clinton, the infamous Super Bowl night 60
Minutes appearance, he lied to us all, with Hillary at his side, and it worked.

What Howard Kurtz really ends up detailing for us is just the long dress rehearsal before the big show,
in which the Clintons and their spin machine worked out all the kinks in their act. By the time the
Lewinsky scandal broke, they understood that all they had to do was deny initially, demonize liberally
(both accusers and investigators), leak pre-emptively, and acknowledge belatedly and they would be
able to so desensitize the press and the people that Bill Clinton would ultimately survive. And so, as
the tawdry mess reached its foreordained conclusion, we had the hitherto unimaginable situation of a
credible rape charge (by Juanita Broaddrick) against the President of the United States, which he did
not even deny, but which the press chose not to hound him with. He had finally just beaten them
down to the point where they didn't have the heart to pursue another scandal.

Then, in a moment which nearly redeems him, Clinton left office in a blizzard of bartered pardons and
other final acts of contempt for the staffers, supporters, and voters who had excused everything he'd
ever done. It was the final (...) gesture of a man who clearly understood that he had so implicated a
nation in his treachery that he had become untouchable. To judge Bill Clinton at that late date would
have required people to face all of the excuses and allowances that they'd made for him in the
preceding eight years, and that was not going to happen. It was all just so brazen that it was hard not
to admire the in-your-face flourish with which he departed. Howard Kurtz does a fine job of charting
the early years of the Clinton scandals, but there was so much more yet to come.

    GRADE : B+

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Journalist and Political Junkies.......2001-11-02

When reading this book, which focuses on the Clinton Presidency, you must put your biases aside. If you can't get beyond your personal feelings about Bill Clinton, you will fail to grasp the very thing that made his presidency as successful as it was.
Reviewers that claim Clinton demeaned the Presidency through his constant campaigning, are naive. The truth is Clinton showed how the modern President must function, in order to be successful in this era of gotcha-jounalism in Washington.
The Clinton press and communications office show political proffesionals the way to manage scandal. Strategies include the document dump, the timing of news releases, and possibly the most important strategy, communicating to the electorate through the media.
If journalists want to learn to anticipate the various ways politicians in the future will attempt to avoid being caught in a scandal, then they must study Kurtz' Spin Cycle if they ever hope to realize their dream of being the next Bob Wooward.

3 out of 5 stars It all depends on ones point of view.......2001-10-29

Howard Kurtz has written an entertaining and informative book as far as it goes which isn't far enough. He try's to convince the reader of the veracity and concern of the media for the American People's right to know. The truth is that this same media voted overwhelmingly for the Clinton administration in numbers exceeding 90% of their members. This book outlines their consternation with Bill Clinton, the carrier of their progressive banner, and their increasing irritation with his self absorbed methods for attaining its imperatives.

The book is centered on the various tawdry scandals engaged in by the Clinton administration led by that most self engaged of presidential couples. Kurtz does a good job of reflecting the media's dyspepsia in that regard. To truly critique this book, rent the film "All the Presidents Men". Better yet, read the book. Then you can see how the media reacts to a Republican president who has overstepped his constitutional bounds. Through a perusal of "All the Presidents Men" you can contrast the media's rapt attention to the Watergate hearings versus its disdain for the same involving Clinton. Witness their gnashing of teeth and wringing of hands on display over "Bill" with their unreal and venomous hatred of "Milhaus". Only then will you really appreciate the unintended humor in this shallow tome and its attempts to dissuade and misdirect from the real constitutional crisis with which Bill Clinton presented America. History will reflect that Bill Clinton was Richard Nixon times ten.

For a primer on the Clinton administration and the rule of law in its wake, read anything by Roger Pilon of the Cato Institute or Clint Bolick of the Institute for Justice.

    Book Description

Two of America's favorite mommies bring their edgy, hysterically funny and right-on-target look at life in the sac. Cul-de-sac, that is. Caryl Kristensen and Marilyn Kentz, two suburbanites who developed a stand-up routine that led to an ABC sitcom and later a talk show, will have readers saying to themselves, "It feels so good to know I'm not alone," and perhaps, "Thank God that wasn't my kid."

Meeting first as neighbors in a Petaluma cul-de-sac,"The Mommies" juggled babies, Little League, Halloween, teenagers and the secret, unwritten rules of suburban behavior. From their early dreams of glamorous bohemianism to the dirty reality of dirty diapers and carpools, motherhood may have brought its share of sacrifice, but it also sparked real friendships and strong support from the rest of the mothers out there. Now everybody's favorite neighbors, the Mommies tell it like you're over for morning coffee.

    Caryl and Marilyn on:

Teenagers: Living with teenagers is like watching Jeopardyevery night; after a while you start thinking, "Maybe I am stupid."

Kids in general: There are two kinds of kids: those who grow up and become lawyers and those who need them. I have both kinds.

Body Image: Don't you think cellulite looks a little better tan?

Childbirth: The epidural was better than the sex that got me there.

Fashion: The rule is this if you're wearing something that's hurting you, chances are it's hurting someone else.

The Motherload, like the best of Erma Bombeck, is a savvy, savagely amusing book that speaks to the tired parent in all of us.

1 out of 5 stars Two bitter women.......2000-09-10

My wife picked up this book somewhere. I took a look through it, and was surprised at the bitterness that passes for humor. Such scheming and mental manipulation of family members I have never seen openly joked about in print this way. The co-writers mistakenly assume that most other woman are like them. They need to stop congratulating themselves on their own cleverness and concentrate on the positivity in life--or they should get some help.

2 out of 5 stars Funny at times, but makes parenthood look depressing..........2000-07-31

The authors can be very clever, but most of the jokes seem to come at the expense of the children that they created and raised. Is parenthood really this much of an unpleasant chore, and are women STILL stuck in such stereotypical roles? Not in my circles. If you don't have children, beware, this book could scare you away from parenting.

I am a 19 year old college student from upstate New York, and I hopefully have a few more years until I have a husband and a family, but I just wanted you to know that I enjoyed The Mother Load from cover to cover. The book caught my eye because I loved your television series and your talk show. It was so funny that I couldn't put it down! I think it's great that the two of you were willing to share personal stories to inspire other women. I just wanted to let you know that it's not only wives and mothers who read your book. I think your book is an inspiration for women of all ages. I'm looking forward to the next one! Thank you very much.

      Book Description

The subjects and settings of Joseph Mills' poems range from Laundromats, groceries, and coffee shops, to cemeteries, the stars over the Grand Canyon, and even Purgatory, which is seen as a combination "dry cleaner/car wash." These poems, which deal mainly with traveling and motion, explore the simple encounters that can suggest the complexity of human interactions. In everyday language, the narrator considers topics such as how difficult it can be to find a poem to read at a wedding, what happens when a person drives non-stop from Salt Lake to Chicago, and why it would be convenient if people wore labels like wine bottles, so "we would have a better idea/who might improve with age/and who we should enjoy now."

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A good read.......2006-10-18

I really enjoyed this fine book. The poems have a certain seriousness to them mixed with a humorous take on the universe which augments even the most somber of subjects Mills works with.

One of my favorites is "How to Search for a Poem to Read at a Wedding" which starts with a funny take on frustration searching for the right poem, and then it moves on to being a poem you might be tempted to read at a wedding if you, like the speaker, were to be asked.

My absolute favorite, though, is "Shooting a Scene in the Parkview Cemetary" set in a cemetary where a film crew is working, bouncing from the ultimate in faked reality to life and death itself in ten well-crafted segments. The crew lounges and eats donuts, waiting to resume shooting while mourners come for their very real funerals:

"I watch the black crowd gather,
      consider swelling the scene,
      a comfort to family,
      a puzzle to friends,
      a stranger on the periphery,
      marking the radius of grief."

      4 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-08-30

The poetry of Joseph Mills is evocative, expressive and truly thought provoking. I've always envied those who can easily take their thoughts about the world and put them into poetry. Mills is such an author.

Though not a large volume, I found myself rereading several of the poems and getting a new meaning out of them. Some, I will admit, I did not care for, but I am sure that others would find them memorable or touching. My favorite poem is "Introductions Made Easy." I found myself agreeing with Mills' assessment of humanity--those who might improve with age and those we should enjoy now.

At just over 70 pages of poetry, the book is easy to read in one sitting, however, I found myself putting it down after certain poem--not because I didn't want to read more, but because I wanted to think more about what I had just read.

The poems deal with family, aging, death, observations about those around him, academia, acting, and many other subjects. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the majority of them. This book will go on my "keeper" shelf, and I will share it with others who will also appreciate these observations on life--during the spin cycle.

Armchair Interviews says: Humanity in the spin cycle--what a unique image.

            Book Description

In this collection of essays, you'll find stories that touch the heart or tickle the funny bone -- sometimes both, simultaneously. While this award-winning columnist typically writes about the joys and hassles of life in a family, The Snake in the Spin Cycle offers something more than a series of lighthearted observations on topics like carpools, Mother's Day, and missing socks. A few of these essays would be right at home on the opinion page of the newspaper; others recapture what it was like growing up in the Midwest in the fifties.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must for Moms.......2000-09-15

The Snake in the Spin Cycle is a collection of essays that a mom can pick up and enjoy in the little bits of time that she has--waiting for appointments, or at the end of the day. The trouble is, you won't want to put them down. Ms. Diaz made me laugh --and cry. And the insights she shares from her own family life will ring true for many families, I'm sure. I highly recommend The Snake in the Spin Cycle!

            5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Book.......2000-03-22

The Snake in the Spin Cycle is a treasure chest packed with enchanting tales. Sue Diaz never fails to delight in this collection of essays devoted to coping with life's little mysteries. The author has the unique ability to blend humor with honest sentiment, and often the reader finds herself blinking back a tear at the end of a piece. Strongly recommended.

            5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2000-03-14

Finally, a book that really seems to be about my life...Diaz is right on the mark about so many things, from family issues, to societal concerns, to plain silly ideas. Her essays made me at times laugh out loud-- and at other times reach for the Kleenex. I am impressed, and look forward to reading more by Diaz. She is a promising author who sees life as it is!
