Book Description
This book provides an introduction and guide to modern advances in charged particle (and antiparticle) confinement by electromagnetic fields. Confinement in different trap geometries, the influence of trap imperfections, classical and quantum mechanical description of the trapped particle motion, different methods of ion cooling to low temperatures, and non-neutral plasma properties (including Coulomb crystals) are the main subjects. They form the basis of such applications of charged particle traps as high-resolution optical and microwave spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, atomic clocks, and, potentially, quantum computing.

Wigfield is in peril. The Bulkwaller Dam, which towers over the tiny town, is scheduled to be destroyed which would in turn wipe out Wigfield. Journalist Russell Hokes travels there to profile the brave and honest citizens who are struggling to save their community. Well, sort of. Actually, Wigfield is not so much a town as a series of ramshackle strip clubs and used-auto-parts stores, lacking any kind of civic infrastructure whatsoever. And its people are not so much "brave and honest" as "brutal," "homicidal," and "lacking any redeeming virtue whatsoever." Similarly, to call Hokes, who narrates his own struggles to gather accumulate 50,000 words, a "journalist" is at best an exaggeration and at worst an abomination against the institution of journalism itself.
The world of Wigfield, as concocted by the brilliant Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello, and Amy Sedaris (creators of the Comedy Central series Strangers with Candy), is somewhat reminiscent of the slice-of-life small-town humor of Christopher Guest's Waiting for Guffman. But instead of putting on a musical, as the Guffman folks did, the people of Wigfield busy themselves trying to acquire government handouts and stabbing each other to death. When the government rebuffs their efforts, based on the fact that they're not technically a town, they come up with a plan to get paid anyway. Wigfield's residents (as played by Colbert, Dinello, and Sedaris) are portrayed in a series of compellingly grotesque portraits by renowned designer and photographer Todd Oldham. The humor of the book--much like the town's mentality--is dense, as nearly every sentence contains one or several grimly hilarious references. Fans of feel-good whimsy are advised to navigate toward lighter fare but social pariahs, disgraced journalists, brooding malcontented sociopaths, and anyone who enjoys dark, twisted, and profoundly funny writing will find a home in Wigfield. --John Moe

Customer Reviews:
There's no place like Wigfield (thank goodness)..........2007-06-14
I wanted to like this book...I really did...but long before I finished it I realized that that was not going to happen. There are plenty of trademark funny and witty bits and passages to satisfy Colbert and Sedaris fans, but the repetitive and uninspiring story only serves to drain all life out of the book.
The story is told through a series of interviews with and observations of the people inhabiting the doomed and fictional town of Wigfield. Unfortunately each new character we meet sounds and behaves just like every other character (including the narrator). You'd think the authors would have considered just how many trashy, ignorant, smart-alecs a reader can stand in one story - my research indicates 1 character fitting the above description is plenty.
If you don't understand or appreciate the humor in shows like The Colbert Report or Strangers With Candy, then this isn't the place to start. If hanging out with Steven Colbert after he's downed a dozen Red Bulls appeals, then Wigfield might be money well spent. For us in-betweeners, reading every other chapter should satisfy the need to laugh without irritating your funny bone.
It's HilARious.......2007-04-09
If you've ever seen any comedy by Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris, or Paul Dinello, you are probably already pretty much certain this will be a great book. Well, let me assure you, they won't dissapoint.
The team behind "Strangers With Candy," and "Exit 57" deliver in this *50,000* word book about Russel Hokes, aspiring, and not so ambitious highway painter turned author. The story is told through his (somewhat idiotic) point of view, and there are several very quotable points throughout.
I don't want to say to much, but this book is very much worth the money you'll spend.
***For reference on how great the authors are, try watching the Colbert Report on Comedy Central.
THE FUNNIEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!.......2007-02-19
In fact, someone never returned my first copy and I had to buy it again! I told a colleague to buy it and give it a try and she called me twenty pages into reading it to tell me she never laughed so hard reading a book.
If you enjoy the humor of The Colbert Report or Strangers with Candy, you will love, love, love this book. It's a breezy, hysterical trip.
Steven Colbert Is Awesome.......2006-09-21
I read the first paragraph of this book in the bookstore and I knew I had to buy it. It hits you right off the bat and doesn't let up until the end. I love all the contradictions this book has in store. Everything in this book is so far-fetched. but so funny. Go out and buy it. Its a must read for anyone who wants a good laugh.
Wow........2006-05-23
This is undoubtedly the strangest book I've read in a long time.
I got Wigfield from the library because I love Stephen Colbert - his current show, of course, is amazing, but what I've seen of Strangers With Candy is perhaps even better. Naturally, a book written by the three talented people behind such a show sounded promising.
In addition to being funny in a I-really-shouldn't-be-laughing-at-stuff-like-this way, there's also brilliant wordplay and the like, which make it even more fun to read.
Not for the faint of heart, but definitely for those who enjoy somewhat reckless, completely politically incorrect (and I hate to use that phrase, because it's tossed about so much nowadays to refer to just about anything), and overall rather bizarre humor. Much like Strangers with Candy.
Great book.
It's kind of brilliant and terrible at the same time.
I'll have to read it again.

Book Description
A hilarious satire of a town in jeopardy and the earnest "reporter" who hopes to save it—and his own just-hatched career as a writer. Brilliantly told by three of today's hottest young comedy stars. Russell Hokes was recently fired from his job painting center lines on interstates and is now free to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. Instead of drawing long white lines on asphalt, he'll draw much shorter ones on paper, with loops and curls. Having told his clueless publisher he wants to write about the quiet dignity of the American Small Town, Hokes hits the road for Wigfield. Wigfield is a town in danger. A bucolic hideaway built directly in front of a massive dam, it will soon be flooded when the dam is demolished by the state government to restore the salmon run. The only hope for the neither quiet nor dignified town is a self-righteous, self-aggrandizing, self-involved so-called "journalist": Hokes. As the story unfolds, told through a series of interviews with the town's colorful residents, including an elderly couple in their late thirties and the manager of Wigfield's premier strip club, Hokes seeks desperately to find anything about Wigfield worth documenting—or saving. Wigfield is a razor-sharp satire by three major talents. Performed by the authors.
Customer Reviews:
Hysterical!.......2007-07-01
A writer needs a story, and decides Wigfield is it. The interviews that follow are hysterically funny. All the readers are funny, but Stephen Colbert is the best.
absurdly hilarious.......2007-05-06
The audio book of this is the way to go. Steven, Amy & Paul are just too good.
A tad bit too long - but super fun.
Brilliant Documentation of Small Town Life.......2007-03-09
Russell Hokes makes his first splash in the deep end of literature with this brilliant tell-all story of a majestic dam, a merciless government, and a small town in peril. Listen to personal accounts of the simplicity of small town life from the heroic citizens who stand on the brink of destruction. Marvel at the amazingly eloquent descriptions and clever similes and metaphors that cover each of the pages - or in this case, the undersides of the CDs. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll cry with laughter, and laugh at people crying. Don't pass up a chance to buy what will one day undoubtedly be a Nobel Prize winning book to be studied in Ivy League colleges until the end of time, or at least until some robot army rises up and destroys humanity.
The Comedic Trio of Colbert, Sedaris, and Dinello work magic once more!!.......2006-08-04
You can always count on these three to come up with something humorous, witty, and highly enjoyable. Wigfield is no different. I can't imagine reading Wigfield as a book without the audio, however, because the authors do the narration. They know how the writing was meant to be portrayed, and so they read Wigfield to us as it was meant to be heard. Half of the laughs come from the witty lines; the rest from the hysterical narration. Don't miss out!
Catch this metaphorical tiger by the tail and hold on.......2004-11-29
An insane story, made up mainly of character sketches. The audio version is superior to the written format primarily due to the superior performances by the authors.
You do miss out in seeing photos of Stephen Colbert in drag, however, so you may want to skim through the hardcover version the next time you're at the book store.
If you're a fan of Tom Bodet or Garrison Keillor, you'll enjoy this spoof on their type of storytelling.

Book Description
Concept Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) is a unique, classroom-tested model of reading instruction that breaks new ground by explicitly showing how content knowledge, reading strategies, and motivational support all merge in successful reading instruction. A theoretical perspective (engagement in reading) frames the book and provides a backdrop for its linkage between hands-on science activities and reading comprehension. Currently funded by the Interagency Educational Research Initiative (IERI), this model has been extensively class tested and is receiving national attention that includes being featured on a PBS special on the teaching of reading.
Key features of this outstanding new volume include:
*
Theoretical Focus--CORI's teaching framework revolves around the engagement perspective of reading: how engaged reading develops and the classroom contexts and motivational supports that promote it.
*
Content-Area Focus--Although science is the content area around which CORI has been developed, its basic framework is applicable to other content areas.
*
Focus on Strategy Instruction--CORI revolves around a specific set of reading strategies that the National Reading Panel (2000) found to be effective. In some current CORI classrooms collaborating teachers implement all aspects of CORI and in other classrooms teachers implement just the strategy instruction component.
*
Illustrative Vignettes and Cases--Throughout the book vignettes and mini-case studies convey a situated view of instructional practices for reading comprehension and engagement. A detailed case study of one teacher and of the reading progress of her students is featured in one chapter.
This book is appropriate for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in education and psychology, for practicing teachers, and for researchers in reading comprehension and motivation.
