Monte Carlo (MC) methods have proved invaluable in developing a range of computer programs to enhance images in different modalities, including PET and SPECT. Monte Carlo Calculations in Nuclear Medicine: Applications in Diagnostic Imaging is the first book to cover applications of MC methods in nuclear medicine, from first principles to current computer applications. Written by international contributors, the book reviews different types of computer code and provides reference software packages. It also demonstrates how MC techniques can be used to evaluate scatter in SPECT and PET imaging, collimation, and image deterioration.
Customer Reviews:
A good idea, but overly equation-oriented.......2004-10-13
This book represents a noble attempt to put together biological and medical applications for introductory physics courses. This is not just a good idea but really a necessity now that many students in these classes are pre-medical (at least in the US). Certainly it represents an excellent source of problem material for those who want to create an intro physics course that has relevance to future doctors and biologists.
Unfortunately, most of the examples are "set-ups" in which a biological system is used as a wrapper for an equation the students are expected to have memorized. For example, when discussing gravity, the book has a problem on a diving hawk (hawks dive by essentially going into free-fall), in which the students are expected to use (1/2) a t-squared, but for which the students are not expected to estimate the effects of air resistance or assess the realism of the physical situation. I.e., the book contains standard plug-and-chug physics problems in biomedical clothing.
It would be nice to see a book that helps students to learn, on their own, how to identify the relevant physics in a biomedical situation. I can't fault this book overly, since there are essentially no examples of what I am looking for, in either the physics or the bio textbook worlds, save for Steven Vogel's outstanding Biomechanics book (highly recommended).
Well structured book.......2003-10-27
This book has a good content structure for anyone who want to study biomedical applications of physics. For biophysics and first year medical students, this book used in conjunction with a standard calculus or algebra physics book, will be a big help on a better understanding and application of Physics.

Book Description
Pixel detectors are a particularly important class of particle and radiation detection devices. They have an extremely broad spectrum of applications, ranging from high-energy physics to the photo cameras of everyday life. This book is a general purpose introduction into the fundamental principles of pixel detector technology and semiconductor-based hybrid pixel devices. Although these devices were developed for high-energy ionizing particles and radiation beyond visible light, they are finding new applications in many other areas. Book Description
"Engaging and thorough . . . the best modern biography of the man. Why isn't there a great movie about Sir Walter Raleigh? His life had everything."
-Los Angeles Times
Tall, dark, handsome, and damnably proud, Sir Walter Raleigh was one of history's most romantic characters. He founded the first American colony, gave the Irish the potato, even trifled with the Virgin Queen's affections. To his enemies, he was an arrogant liar, deserving of every one of his thirteen years in the Tower of London. Regardless of means, Raleigh's accomplishments are unquestionable: he was the epitome of the English Renaissance man.
Raleigh Trevelyan has traveled to each of the principal places where Raleigh adventured-Ireland, the Azores, Roanoke, and the Orinoco-finding new insights into Raleigh's extraordinary life. His research gives a freshness and immediacy to this detailed, convincing portrait of one of the most compelling figures from the Elizabethan era.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for Elizabethan fans.......2004-11-17
This book has compelled me to write my first ever review. I've rarely read a more enjoyable biography. Although long and very dense, it is well cross-referenced, and well structured.
The depth of research is astounding, and I was particularly impressed that the author had actually traveled to all the key locations, offering a level of colour and feel not otherwise possible.
There is also a great detail of content outside of Sir Walter's own life that is immensely valuable for providing context (so important when reading about another time and place). For this amateur Elizabethan student, the opportunity to read about my favourite characters and the key events of the age from a different perspective was truly enjoyable.
At times the book shows the author's bias, but he carefully lets us know when it's his opinion, and I for one welcomed it based on his depth of knowledge.
Bravo to the author, and to those considering reading this book, a big word of encouragement. Enjoy!
New insight - legend or fop?.......2004-09-21
It is recognized that the author as a descendant of Raleigh would be somewhat biased in his assessment of his subject. With this in mind the portrayal is more balanced than one would think from the preconception and the views of others on this book. The conception most often associated with Raleigh for those unaware of his breadth of activities is that of a dandily dressed (Vincent Price) fop who laid down his cape for the queen. If one delves a little farther into common knowledge we know that he had something to do with the failed Roanoke colony. The gift of Trevelyan's biography is to fill out these clothes. To put flesh upon the man who inhabits the foppish attire. By the time the book takes us to Raleigh's second stay in the Tower, and Trevelyan tells us that people often came to see "the legend" on his daily walks upon the wall, we believe that indeed he was exactly that - a legend. The true measure of biography is that it gives the faults and failings, yet lets one follow the maturing person. Raleigh, indeed had many failings, but he nonetheless comes across in Trevelyan's telling as a compelling and interesting individual. If the Queen, Cecil (Wm.), Walsingham, and Drake are the gods of that era, then certainly the Raleigh of Trevelyan's telling is a giant. The mark of good non-fiction is that it encourages further exploration into the era in which it is set. Trevelyan's book is a must read for those with any interest in this period of English history, particularly that touching on the rise of empire and the role of maritime successes.
Sir Walter the great.......2004-02-08
Sir Walter Raleigh was a little of everything. I read this book along with the new Benjamin Frankin: An American Life, and have determined that there's more to these guys than the scant information we were all given in school. What an eye-opener this book was. Well written, well researched, and well . . . just an overall entertaining good read. Highly recommended.
Also recommended: Benjamin Franklin and McCrae's Bark of the Dogwood
Book Description
This unique biography explores the inner journey of a woman whose outer life was a thrilling story of passion and adventure. Alexandra David-Neel (1868-1969), born in Paris to a socially prominent family, once boasted, "I learned to run before I could walk!" In the course of a lifetime of more than one hundred years, she was an acclaimed operatic soprano, a political anarchist, a religious reformer, an intrepid explorer who traveled in Tibet for fourteen years, a scholar of Buddhism, and the author of more than forty books. But perhaps the most intriguing of all her adventures was the spiritual search that led her from a youthful interest in socialism and Freemasonry to the teachings of the great sages of India and culminated in her initiation into the secret tantric practices of Tibetan Buddhism. This book reveals the penetrating insight and courage of a woman who surmounted physical, intellectual, and social barriers to pursue her spiritual quest.

Book Description
Worthington Chauncey Ford (1858-1941) was descended from a long line of intellectuals, including Governor William Bradford of Plymouth Colony, President Charles Chauncey of Harvard College, and the eminent lexicographer Noah Webster, so it was not surprising that he chose a career dedicated to books and learning. A pioneer in the acquisition and publication of historical documents, Ford's significance as a figure in American letters has been too-long neglected.
His lifelong scholarly achievements are now profiled in this illuminating biography. Louis Leonard Tucker begins by describing how Ford's parents and family inspired his love of books and passion for American history. He then traces Ford's early career from short stints at various jobs to his political appointment as Chief of the Bureau of Statistics in the Department of State, where he launched an ambitious plan to publish and disseminate the Bureau's vast holdings of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century historical manuscripts. Tucker describes Ford's subsequent successful tenures at the Boston Public Library and Library of Congress, and his appointment as Editor of Publications (and de facto Director) at the Massachusetts Historical Society, a pivotal move that ushered in a new era at the venerable Society. He also recounts the fratricide-suicide of Ford's brothers Paul and Malcolm, a much-publicized and scandalous family tragedy.
An invaluable reference for documentary editors, historians, librarians, archivists, and researchers, this well-crafted volume restores to history the considerable contributions of the "Prince of Editors."

Revisiting an old joy.......1999-12-23
Altick's The Scholar Adventurers is a book full of adventure and detective work. When I first read it in the early 80's (the first edition), not only could I not put it down, but I immediately bought two more copies as gifts. Very soon thereafter, the book went out of print. Today I thought of The Scholar Adventurers again as I wondered if I could part with my copy: a scholar friend recently fell off his roof, breaking multiple bones. His hospitalization means a meager Christmas for his family, so I've been deciding what books I could pass along to make the holiday brighter. I decided I could not give up this book, however, even under these circumstances, unless I had some assured way of replacing my copy. Happily I do. So, after you've finished calling me selfish, check the book out for yourself. It's a great read.

Book Description
Today, the achievements of the great Victorian explorer and linguist Sir Richard Burton (1821-1890) may be more widely acknowledged than they were in his own time. The centennial of his death was marked in England and America with exhibits, conferences, and book-length studies of his life and work.
In this volume, eight leading scholars and book collectors present a remarkable composite picture of Burton's legacy: his adventures as an explorer of unknown lands and little-known cultures; his achievements as a geographer and translator; the mysteries of his relations with other explorers and of his personal life. The illustrations represent rare items in Burton's own library and the collections of Edwards H. Metcalf and Quentin Keynes.
