Download Description
Written specifically for electronic and mechanical engineers and students, this book takes quantum mechanics out of the theory books and into the real world, using practical engineering examples throughout. Levi's unique, practical approach engages the reader and keeps them motivated with numerous illustrations, exercises and worked solutions. Starting with some scene setting revision material on classical mechanics and electromagnetics, Levi takes the reader from first principles and Schrödinger's equation on to more advanced topics including scattering, eigenstates, the harmonic oscillator and time dependent perturbation theory. A CD-ROM is included which contains MATLAB source code to support the text. Quantum mechanics is usually thought of as being a difficult subject to master - this book sets out to prove it doesn't need to be.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-04-11
This book is an excelent introduction of quantum mechanics for engineers and non-physicists.
stresses important practical cases.......2006-12-17
Levi's book differs from standard QM texts, in furnishing more of an applied bent. Directed towards those students in applied physics, materials science and engineering. For example, there is a superb chapter on electron propagation in crystals. Where we see how to describe propagation by transmission matrices. And how energy bands arise due to the periodicity of the potential seen by electrons. Of course, solid state texts also discuss this. But the treatment here of such ideas as tunnelling, and using the WKB approximation to describe that tunnelling in a semiquantitative manner, is clear and detailed. Plus, the examples focus on important heterostructures, where band gap engineering is important.
For semiconductor lasers, there is a similar treatment. With comparisons amongst the common types of laser diodes, like GaAs and InGaAsP.
The numerous problems and the copiously worked out examples are also a nice feature of the text.
A window to the world of quantum mechanics for the engineer... but not completely self-contained.......2005-08-17
There is no shortage of quantum mechanics text to choose from. And if I had solely relied on the majority recommendations for an introductory text, I would have certainly missed this gem.
The author is very successful presenting the recondite fundamentals of quantum mechanics in a manner accessible to material scientists and engineers. This is accomplished without losing the rigor necessary to build a strong foundation. Applications of concepts are dispersed through out the chapters and keep the reader's attention.
But by the far the best selling point of this book are the worked problems at the end of the chapters. It is my personal opinion that if a textbook fails to at least provide final answers and solution hints to presented exercises, it is not really a textbook, but a reference reserved for those who have been adequately exposed to the material before. Here all end of the chapter questions are accompanied with worked solutions. This is a rarity among all undergrad or graduate science or engineering texts. This alone makes it valuable for self-study.
To those completely uninitiated to quantum mechanics, I do not recommend this book as a sole source because it is not sufficiently self-contained. It would be best to complement it with "Introduction to Applied Quantum and Statistical Mechanics" by Hagelstein. I have yet to read "Applied Quantum Mechanics" by Kroemer, which has recieved much praise and appears to be another excellent introductory source.

Book Description
The combined finite discrete element method is a relatively new computational tool aimed at problems involving static and / or dynamic behaviour of systems involving a large number of solid deformable bodies. Such problems include fragmentation using explosives (e.g rock blasting), impacts, demolition (collapsing buildings), blast loads, digging and loading processes, and powder technology.
The combined finite-discrete element method - a natural extension of both discrete and finite element methods - allows researchers to model problems involving the deformability of either one solid body, a large number of bodies, or a solid body which fragments (e.g. in rock blasting applications a more or less intact rock mass is transformed into a pile of solid rock fragments of different sizes, which interact with each other). The topic is gaining in importance, and is at the forefront of some of the current efforts in computational modeling of the failure of solids.
- Accompanying source codes plus input and output files available on the Internet
- Important applications such as mining engineering, rock blasting and petroleum engineering
- Includes practical examples of applications areas
Essential reading for postgraduates, researchers and software engineers working in mechanical engineering.

Book Description
This book introduces the finite element and boundary element methods (FEM and BEM) for applications to quantum mechanical systems. A discretization of the action integral with finite elements, followed by application of variational principles, brings a very general approach to the solution of Schroedinger's equation for physical systems in arbitrary geometries with complex mixed boundary conditions. The variational approach is a common thread through the book and is used for the improvement of solutions to spectroscopic accuracy, to adaptively improve finite element meshs, to develop a time-dependent theory, and also to generate the solution of large sparse matrix eigenvalue problems. A thorough introduction to BEM is given using the modelling of surface plasmons, quantum electron waveguides, and quantum scattering as illustrative examples. The book should be useful to graduate students and researchers in basic quantum theory, quantum semiconductor modeling, computational physics, mathematics and chemistry

Book Description
Mechanics and mathematics have been complementary partners since Newton's time and the history of science shows much evidence of the beneficial influence of these disciplines on each other. Driven by increasingly elaborate modern technological applications the symbiotic relationship between mathematics and mechanics is continually growing. However, the increasingly large number of specialist journals has generated a duality gap between the two partners, and this gap is growing wider. Advances in Mechanics and Mathematics (AMMA) is intended to bridge this gap. Audience: This book is suitable for scientists, engineers and mathematicians, including advanced students (doctoral and post-doctoral level) at universities and in industry interested in modern mechanics and applied mathematics.

Book Description
Traditionally, new materials have been developed by empirically correlating their chemical composition, and the manufacturing processes used to form them, with their properties. Until recently, metallurgists have not used quantum theory for practical purposes. However, the development of modern density functional methods means that today, computational quantum mechanics can help engineers to identify and develop novel materials.
Computational Quantum Mechanics for Materials Engineers describes new approaches to the modelling of disordered alloys that combine the most efficient quantum-level theories of random alloys with the most sophisticated numerical techniques to establish a theoretical insight into the electronic structure of complex materials such as stainless steels, Hume-Rothery alloys and silicates. The practical success of these approaches to applications in all of these areas are covered in detail. The new EMTO-CPA method is detailed, including its application in alloys to model structural stability and elastic properties of random alloys of arbitrary composition and the effect of alloying elements on elastic stiffnesses stacking fault energies and structural parameters. The EMTO-CPA method makes new approaches to computational alloy design feasible.
Computational Quantum Mechanics for Materials Engineers shows how the technique will soon allow materials engineers to become "quantum blacksmiths".
Computational Quantum Mechanics for Materials Engineers will interest researchers and postgraduate students in materials science and engineering, solid-state physics and applied quantum mechanics.

Customer Reviews:
Very good book.......2003-07-01
Pros: I liked very much this book. It is very well written and easy to read. If you don't like fortran, no matter!! I developed a Matlab code from the explanations on the first two chaps. The subjects covered (from fluid flow and solid deformations to special relativistic motions) are well documented and plenty of examples, making them very easy to follow. I've tryed the method, and I find it a very good one to simulate fragmentation flows.
Cons:The references provided are very good (they're a lot, as well!), but I think that they're not enogh linked with the text. Also, it will be interesting if the book devote a little more emphasis in fluid flow... the book fails (as far as I've seen all the literature in particle modelling using this method fails too) to describe a way to calculate pressure.
Summarizing, you'll find this book is worth your bucks!
Book Description
This widely anticipated book by a leading expert in the field, is designed to meet the changing quantum mechanics needs of general and applied physicists involved in such areas as solid state research, quantum electronics, materials science, etc.
This book uses new and less abstract ways to present formal concepts.
For electrical engineers in the semiconductor areas.
Customer Reviews:
Very Good QM text.......2006-12-28
It is one of the finest books you will see on QM and if you are from the electrical engineering stream with semiconductor physics as your major,no text perhaps shall serve you better. The striking aspect of the book is the physical insight it gives into highly abstract theories of QM and the illustration of that theory with a relevant example from the engineering/physical world. Mathematical results we take for granted just as another interplay of the numbers are attributed to some very definite law of nature, for eg the unobservability of absolute frequencies in the probability density function of linearly superposed states is a case in point.Rather than leaving the mathematical expression as a difference of two frequencies he goes onto explain it and also draws an analogy between Electromagnetic waves and the point where the classical limit and the analogy breaks down. This is just one example out of the many scattered throughout the text.Any one with a working knowledge of QM and some introduction to semiconductor physics will immensely benefit from it, though physicists alike, I think can draw much information from the material presented.I hope this book has greater circulation. No wonder the author was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for his seminal work on semiconductor heterostructures.
Nice blend of theory and practice.......2004-05-04
This is the only quantum mechanics book I've ever seen which doesn't skimp on theory and yet which treats the subject from the perspective of somebody who might actually have to use it to solve problems. Many books of this depth would simply present the abstract theory, but Kroemer always maintains a connection to the application of whatever he's explaining. What's remarkable is that he does so without having to water things down much. It's a shame this book didn't get more attention: it really should've become a classic for anybody in applied physics (i.e. the vast majority of physicists and electrical engineers).
a must have for anyone studying quamtum mechanics.......2002-08-29
This book is fantastic. It is the only book of its kind in that it *explains* quantum theory as well as introducing the full mathematical bra-ket formalism. It also gives the best explanation of multiparticle hamiltonians that I have seen. Most lower level books skip these topics, and upper level books introduce them without much explanation. It covers potential wells and how they apply to electrons in solids (solid state physics) as well as the harmonic potential and many applications in solid state. Most QM books cover this stuff too, but this book actually explains clearly why you should learn this stuff. It has a true physics feel to it, rather than the mathematical treatment of most senior level and 1st year grad texts on QM. It is the perfect book for someone in engineering who is taking quantum mechanics. I also think physics major who takes QM using Liboff, Shankar, or other similar books would benifit greatly using this a companion.
If you have no quantum background you may want to start with Eisberg and Resnick's book, which I also rec'd highly. It is at a slightly less mathematical level, but is a great physics book and covers a very broad range of modern physics.
Beautiful, very physical presentation of abstract concepts........1999-07-13
I feel it is an ideal book to be used by guys who want to USE quantum theory in their research. I have found the presentation ideal for someone with an undergraduate course in quantum mechanics. The concepts are built solidly, with physical insight. The language is crisp and there is an air of authority in the explanation of many concepts.

Customer Reviews:
A great read.......2007-05-16
If you read the first book you will definitely enjoy this sequel. Pamela Anderson adds a lot of personality to her characters and some of the story line is not so far off from her real life.
AHHH Pamela! You are too good! .......2007-01-29
This book is fiction, but you can tell that she uses real life experiences to add to the fun. This book was a quick read and kept me entertained. I would recommend to any fan.
Disappointing.......2007-01-21
The book started off great. Steamy and hot at the beginning. Once Jimi and Star had their abrupt meeting with an unwelcome photographer, it just went down hill from there. I did not like the character of Jimi at all!! In Pamela Anderson's first book Star, Star Wood Leigh was a loveable character with a lot of zing! In Star Struck, Jimi turned out to be a self-centered, spoiled, immature, perverted a**hole and took Star down with him. I was hoping the second book would be as fun as the first, but I was terribly disappointed. It was as though Pam Anderson just quickly threw the ending together just to get it done and over with. I did not feel the energy at the end. It wasn't even original! I was never a Pam Anderson fan untill I read her first book. I thought the second book would be just as good. I hope she writes a 3rd book and makes it fresh with that original zing.
Hard to believe, but it is worse than the first.......2006-10-06
You can read my review of Star and find out how I was tricked into reading that by a bookstore employee. Unfortunately, my husband remembered seeing that book on the shelves and decided I might enjoy the sequel. WRONG!!! I couldn't get past the first two chapters. There are far too many sex scenes in the first two chapters alone. Nobody could possibly be as stupid as Star. It is horrible. I swear that some of my brain leaked out of my head when I read those two chapters.
Much better than the first.......2006-10-04
It's very weird when you say you prefer a book's sequel to the original. I wasn't too fussed really over Pammy's first book "Star", I've kept it, but never picked up again to re-read it.
I've had "Star Struck" on my wishlist for quite a while, and came across it in the shop on the boat while on holiday. I probably paid over the odds for it, but it was in euros, so it probably worked out at the same price. I had originally started another book about the Titanic, but couldn't get into it, so started reading this instead.
"Star Struck" drew me into the world of Star straight away, and had a tight grip of me throughout the whole book. In fact, I finished it within a couple of hours. It's more of a novella, had it been in smaller type, with not so big margins, but it's a terrific read, much better than Star.
What really shocked me about this book, was reading the acknowledgements, that Pammy does a lot of thing a lot of authors/celebrities DON'T do when writing their biographies/book: they don't admit to using a ghost writer. Pammy does this quite happily and I applaud her for this. For some reason, they don't like admitting they use a ghost writer. Cos of course, we all believe all they do is sit around all day typing away, or doing a JK, and handwriting it! (That must be painful.) She probably gets final approval of anything that goes into it, but you can tell a lot came from her life. She met & married Tommy Lee (or Jimi Deeds in the book) within 3 days of meeting him; she had a miscarriage on the set of Barb Wire (or Hy Voltz); that infamous video and lots more beside.
The book has a lot of sex scenes in it, and coming from Pammy, she certainly knows a lot. (We also discover that Jimi - probably like Tommy - is very well endowed, hello!) Every chapter has at least one scene like this.
Towards the end of the book, it does leave it open ended, for a possible third in the trilogy (I hope so!), but it also turns into out a bit similar to Thelma & Louise. (Oooh, did that give the ending away?) It certainly kept me turning the pages, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I might be persuaded to read them both again, and maybe even change my original review of Star.
