Book Description

Measurement shapes scientific theories, characterises improvements in manufacturing processes and promotes efficient commerce. In concert with measurement is uncertainty, and students in science and engineering need to identify and quantify uncertainties in the measurements they make. This book introduces measurement and uncertainty to second and third year students of science and engineering. Its approach relies on the internationally recognised and recommended guidelines for calculating and expressing uncertainty (known by the acronym GUM). The statistics underpinning the methods are considered and worked examples and exercises are spread throughout the text. Detailed case studies based on typical undergraduate experiments are included to reinforce the principles described in the book. This guide is also useful to professionals in industry who are expected to know the contemporary methods in this increasingly important area. Additional online resources are available to support the book at www.cambridge.org/9780521605793.

4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended book for the application of GUM.......2007-10-02

The calculation of uncertainty is an important part of my research and I obtained a copy of the ISO Guide to the Measurement of Uncertainty to help me with my calculations. However, I found the ISO publication to be difficult to follow. Although the terms in the ISO publication are defined in the appendices, I still had difficulty applying it direction to my research.

Fortunately, I found this book, An Introduction to Uncertainty in Measurement: Using the GUM in my university library and it has been a tremendous help. The authors do a good job at walking the reader through the calculations needed for GUM and at providing examples. I found the book easy to read and easy to understand. There are several examples of applying GUM to measurements at the back of the book. Once I read this book, I went back and reread the ISO publication and this time, I found that I could understand how to apply it correctly.

I found this book to be very good, but it did lack a few things. The authors tend to repeat themselves in different chapters and I think that the book could have been better organized. Also, correlated sources of uncertainty are mentioned, but examples of how to address correlated sources are not provided in the book. Lastly, the examples which are given in the book are similar in nature and I would have preferred to see a wider range of examples given.

Overall, I strongly recommend this book if you are using GUM. However, I would like to see future editions address the organization of the book and the examples which are given.

Book Description

Literally an entire course between two covers, Measurement Uncertainty: Methods and Applications, Fourth Edition, presents engineering students with a comprehensive tutorial of measurement uncertainty methods in a logically categorized and readily utilized format. The new uncertainty technologies embodied in both U.S. and international standards have been incorporated into this text with a view toward understanding the strengths and weaknesses of both.

The book is designed to also serve as a practical desk reference in situations that commonly confront an experimenter. The text presents the basics of the measurement uncertainty model, non-symmetrical systematic standard uncertainties, random standard uncertainties, the use of correlation, curve-fitting problems, and probability plotting, combining results from different test methods, calibration errors, and uncertainty propagation for both independent and dependent error sources. The author draws on years of experience in industry to direct special attention to the problem of developing confidence in uncertainty analysis results and using measurement uncertainty to select instrumentation systems.

    Book Description

At the turn of the 19 th century, Carl Friedrich Gauß founded error calculus by predicting the then unknown position of the planet Ceres. Ever since, error calculus has occupied a place at the heart of science. In this book, Grabe illustrates the breakdown of traditional error calculus in the face of modern measurement techniques. Revising Gauß’ error calculus ab initio, he treats random and unknown systematic errors on an equal footing from the outset. Furthermore, Grabe also proposes what may be called well defined measuring conditions, a prerequisite for defining confidence intervals that are consistent with basic statistical concepts. The resulting measurement uncertainties are as robust and reliable as required by modern-day science, engineering and technology.

    Book Description

The objective of this book is to give well-grounded methods for estimation of the uncertainly of measurement results. Starting from the basics of metrology, the book studies this subject in detail, from theoretical analysis all the way to concrete practical recommendations in areas ranging from single measurements in industry, trade, etc. to multiple measurements in experimental sciences. The book derives these recommendations by systematic development of the measurement accuracy theory. An important aspect of this book is that it develops the theory from the strong practical perspective, by giving priority to the physical essence of the problems and paying special attention to properties of measuring instruments and their influence on the uncertainty of measurements. The book also presents basics on characterization, standardization and calibration of measuring instruments as well as methods for calculating limits of errors of measuring instruments. All recommendations are illustrated by detailed examples from measurements of both electrical and mechanical quantities.

4 out of 5 stars Advanced Book About Metrology.......2003-06-10

As an experimental physicist by education I picked up this book to brush up my measurement knowledge. I was really surprised to discover that this book is about metrology and not experimental physics measurements. In fact it was very educating for me to read about the many differences between those two closely related trades.

Especially I liked the first chapter it has a philosophical depth. Most of it can be read like poetry: enjoying every day a few pages. The deep and thoughtful understanding of the author is stunning.

The following chapters are of a strong varying quality: some trivial, some educational. The mathematics can be followed (or looked up) by people with a physics background. It is not always clear to me why at some points the details of the calculations are spelled out and at others not.

This book is definitely not a textbook or an introduction to the field. You should already have a basic knowledge of the subject.

      Book Description

It is now widely recognized that measurement data should be properly analyzed to include an assessment of their associated uncertainty. Since this parameter allows for a meaningful comparison of the measurement results and for an evaluation of their reliability, its expression is important not only in the specialized field of scientific metrology, but also in industry, trade, and commerce. General rules for evaluating and expressing the uncertainty are given in the internationally accepted ISO Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement, generally known as the GUM. Evaluating the Measurement Uncertainty details the theoretical framework on which the GUM is based and provides additional material on more advanced topics such as least-squares adjustment and Bayesian statistics. The book does not require previous knowledge other than elementary calculus and can be read as a complement to the GUM or as a stand-alone reference source. It stresses fundamental principles and illustrates their applications through numerous examples taken from many different fields of metrology. The book includes practical guidance as well as theoretical aspects, resulting in an invaluable resource for metrologists, engineers, physicists, and graduate students involved with measurements in academia and industry.

        Book Description

Well founded and reliable emission data are necessary to implement strategies to investigate and control air pollution caused by the transport and chemical transformation of air pollutants. This book contains a wealth of new information that enables environmental scientists and authorities dealing with air pollution to design methods for measuring and modelling emission rates related to specific pollution sources, and thus to generate improved emission inventories and reduction strategies. Furthermore, it provides information for policy makers and environmental stakeholders concerning the main sources of emissions and the uncertainties of emission data. Scientists will obtain the know-how to carry out experiments to verify emission data, including tunnel and open motorway studies, comprehensive city experiments and tracer experiments. Readers interested in policy applications have access here to valuable information about the sources of air pollutants.
