The first half deals with the motion of a single particle under the influence of electronic and magnetic fields. The basic language of linear and circular accelerators is developed. The principle of phase stability is introduced along with phase oscillations in linear accelerators and synchrotrons. Presents a treatment of betatron oscillations followed by an excursion into nonlinear dynamics and its application to accelerators. The second half discusses intensity dependent effects, particularly space charge and coherent instabilities. Includes tables of parameters for a selection of accelerators which are used in the numerous problems provided at the end of each chapter.

This book is a superb introduction to the field of acclereator physics. Starting with a basic knowledge of relativity and E&M is all that is necessary. Edwards and Syphers do a great job of "building" an accelerator in their book and using operating parameters of real world accelerators (mostly the Tevatron) for their numerical examples.

Very specialised book. Written mostly for engineers involved in designing accelerators, and graduate students in physics who might have experiments at an accelerator.

No abstruse theory here. A book for experimentalists. Wilson describes clearly the differences between cyclotrons and linear accelerators and synchrotrons. The advantages and disadvantages of each. With real life examples, like those at CERN (of course), and at SLAC and Fermilab.

Big Trouble is HILARIOUS!.......2007-08-27

Dave Barry's "Big Trouble" is one of the funniest novels I've ever read. Unfortunately, this is a review for Tricky Business. It's still kind of funny, but it's not as fresh and surprising as Big Trouble is. It's also a lot more "adult" -- a lot more sex and adult language/violence than Big Trouble. It feels like a little too much for a supposedly light, humourous romp.
The book also recycles more of Barry's humour column material -- like funny band names, etc.
It's an easy, light read, but if you can only read one Dave Barry novel, pick Big Trouble.

Dave Barry writes great novels! It is easy to visualize his characters and his witty writing stays with you. This book is a little darker than Big Trouble, but definitely worth reading. The beahvior of the newscasters will have you laughing out loud!

As a parody it's not very funny, but it's too silly to be taken seriously as a crime novel. Parts of it may make you smile. It's a good book to pass the time in a waiting room, as long as you have a strong stomach!

In the beginning it was a little difficult to keep the myriad storylines straight, but they all came together in a fabulous, funny, action-packed (if a bit raunchy) storyline that kept you on the edge of your seat. Barry created characters you love, hate, and love to hate. Not for the very young or the uptight, this book had me laughing and wondering the whole time.
